The grandma commercial basically comes down to this:
Granny 1:'So check this out, I'm just cruisin' in my ride, blasting 50 cent, you know, just vibin'. So I totally slam that shit, and this biker cop pulls me over with his fake-ass sneakers, telling me I can't put my foot down there, and I gotta get him that moolah. So I go like 'hey, chill out, I ain't your bitch!'
Granny 2: 'wicked!'
The exact right translation!
Accurate
Goed vertaald, een van de betere reclames... tijdloos!
Accuraat
Remove "just cruisin'"
Replace "biker cop" with "popo"
Replace "sneakers" with "rims"
Watching this as a Dutch guy is really funny, since I kinda forgot how good and clever our commerials used to be! Nowadays 90% is just too cringe to even watch.
Ik zeg alleen maar Belsimpel.
@@DerJuvens ver-schrik-kelijk...
@@mcjansen Stel je voor je bent op vacantie in Nederland en je zet jouw TV in de hotelkamer aan en je word begroet met een Belsimpel advertentie. Wat zou je dan niet gaan denken :S
Same XD Both when they're speaking English and there's Dutch subs and the other way around, lol.
True
The "even Apeldoorn bellen" from centraal beheer is a phrase that still gets used by the generation growing up with those ads. Like ten years later or so. Had quite the impact on on the culture
The first commercials with that slogan are from the '90s. So multiple generations already
The commercials were just so good usually
Of 'dat is snel'
As a dutchie... I advise you to watch more of the centraal beheer/ even Apeldoorn bellen commercials. They're really funny.
Jaaa Even Apeldoorn bellen. Die zijn echt grappig
Show your guys some clips of New Kids. That will surely blow their minds.

Oh I miss this golden age of commercials.😢
I'm dutch but I still find myself reading the subtitles while I don't need it.
I love the video's, but the subtitles suck most of the time😂
Ik ook.
😀😆
Haha echt he..
It is time, Vpower.
Almost time to not needing anything anymore.

These two have the most contagious laughs in the world!
Totally agree! XD
Ikr! 😂
RIGHT ?! 🤣
Pretty good contestants to Rene van der Gijp! Lekker man
If you ever make a part 3 you should show him the Rolo one with the elephant. That one was one of my faves as a kid haha.
Or the volkswagen old lady commercial
Rolo… I am the only one who doesn’t liked it… sorry
I'd love to see the 'Volkswagen oud vrouwtje' one to David! Het is die ene waar een oud vrouwtje haar auto verkoopt en de mensen denken van: oh ja, goede auto.
En dan zie je haar flashbacks van dat ze met plankgas over de brug schiet. Hilarisch.
We did our best, but horrible to translate:
So check this: I'm sitting in my car. 50 Cent pumping through the speakers, you know, just chillin'. So you know I'll put the pedal to the metal, right? So a police car comes up to me with it's fake ass rims, the pig says I can't drive that fast and I have to pass him some dough. So I say: "Hey, you're buggin'. I ain't your bitch!"
Other lady: Siiiick!
That is very good, the last line should say : Wicked!!!
Change "fake ass rims" to "fake ass shoes"(pattas are shoes)
Change "that's too difficult" to "hey you're acting up" or "you're bugging/difficult"
The other grandma who said "gruwelijk" translates to "awesome" or something similar.
The comment above me said "wicked" which is a better translation.
Living in the Amsterdam Bijlmer we used to talk like this in the early 2000's.
P.s.
Waggie is car
Doekoe (said as do coo(-l) minus the L) is money
Most slang is from the surinamese language (which I'm of)
@@justapasserby1984 bingo
The last line should say: "dope!", "siiic", or "liiit".
closest english slang for pattas would be kicks
The spoke in English because the builder was Polish.
Gronings zie ik
That´s it..the Dutch hire `cheap` polish contracters but do not speak polish. there the word mix-up starts :-D
And the joke wouldn't work in Dutch: inloop-ijskast/lopende ijskast.
eerste wat k dacht
Tammo
11:56 wow this is actually really hard to translate. You first have to translate it back to "normal Dutch", then you have to translate the "normal Dutch" to "normal English", and then you have to translate the "normal English" to "slang English". You almost have to speak four different languages.
We are not confused at all 🤪🤯🧐
Or you can just be Dutch
not to mention there's american english and british english slang
americans don't use the word "piss" nearly as universial to name a prominent one
sometimes i see americans watching british stuff and realize how they know even less about their ways than i do despite speaking the same langauge :)
(in all fairness though, dutch isn't far from , we're basically just halfway beteween english and german, exactly to be expected to where we are geographically lol
Yeah it's insanely hard to translate, even though I speak 2 of the languages fluently and understand the Dutch slang, I don't know enough of English slang (I know some) to accurately translate
@@MienXiao no because most Dutch people don't know English slang. Even I don't and I was pretty into hip hop.
I love it how they called the withness protection village "Omerta Falls"!
I don't think many know the term "Omerta". Most will miss it, so kudos to you; you're clearly a person of culture 😄
@@roykliffen9674Yep, you are right, I had to look that one up. Now I get it 😊
Jaa, een hele “Even Apeldoorn Bellen” reactie video, ik ben voor!
Owww geweldig, Laat je vriend “lastige oma met nep stuur zien”🙈🤣🤣🤣
The deodorant commercial would be Thanos saying "And where did that bring you? Back to me... the deodorant salesman."
I just want more of this, seeying all those old commercials and then see you (and others) react to it, is so good :P
First commercial they were speaking english because the contractor was east european. A lot of them are in the Netherlands and they do not all speak Dutch very well. English (or German) would then be a common language. 😉
The one about learning English really triggers my memory. We had a holiday in Spain and my brother bought a cd of a Spanish band. Had a nice beat my father liked so it was played a lot in the car, windows down. Only at the end of the vacation we were told it was a cd about smoking weed, bringing down the Spanish government, dissing the police, etc. 🤣
Manu chao? 😂
@@GowtuGames no, not them. It was a Spanish ska band. But.I think my dad would have liked Manu Chao also. 😂
Also, a walking fridge and a walk-in fridge don't sound similar in Dutch.
You should show "new kids" that for sure will be a culture shock
Good one.
Can’t. They’re not actually funny.
Thank you for showing the Cup a Soup one, it is just genious
My fav UA-cam couple with always great content!
Greetz from The Netherlands!!
Thanks for the translations for that commercial you all! It makes so much more sense 😂
Goede ouwe tijd toen er nog toffe reclames waren😊

the one with the grandmas is my all time favorite commercial. so funny
LOVED IT...❣️
Thanks for the uploads.
Lots of hugs from the Netherlands...🤗
Beautiful!!!!! Those are some good commercials hahaha super ingenious!. I so loved David's "Gesponsor-ing" attempts 😂,
and so your face during 4:23's sniff, Seff hahah don't know why, cute sniff face 😄.
Yeah that's genuinely hard to translate. It's a kind of time specific, location specific slang, and slang like that changes constantly. I doubt anyone even speaks like that anymore. People are translating it for you, but none of the translations I read are entirely on point.
For example, when she says "gewoon chill", most people translate that to "just chillin'", or "just vibin'", but "chill" isn't used as a verb there, it's a noun. She's describing the situation: it's just a normal every day occurance to be hanging out in your car, blasting rap music from the speakers: "Just chill, you know?"
She says "neppe patas", and that's probably Surinaams for sneakers: "pata". I'm really not familiar with Surinaams whatsoever, but that's probably either derived from "bata", meaning "shoe" in Yoruba, or in my opinion, it could perhaps be referring to the "foot" itself, from "pauta" in Colloquial Latin. But there's a whole list of possible etymological sources. There's the obvious PIE root "ped" that means "foot", from which you get "octopus", "biped", "pedestrian", etc., and of course "foot" itself. I honestly can't pinpoint the actual origin of the word "patas", but it has a Dutch ring to it, as it's in a plural form, because of the addition of the -s at the end. So "neppe patas" becomes "fake sneakers", "bogus sneakers", or "phoney sneakers", implying they're "cheap knock-offs". However, translating it to "sneakers" examplifies a problem. Do you interpret the meaning and find a fitting English equivalent, or do you render it in a literal sense? Because "sneakers" really has nothing in common with "patas" from an etymological approach, as "sneakers" refers to "sneaking around silently", which in turn refers to the rubber soles of the shoes, but "patas" lacks that meaning. And yet, "sneakers" is the closest word we can use. But is "sneakers" slang enough? Perhaps you could use "kicks", "high-tops", "steps", "runners", whichever one is preferred.
One of the grannies says "gruwelijk", and the closest word in English would be "gruesome", and it has the literal meaning of "to shudder in horror". "Horror", "dread", "cruelty", "fear", "terror", etc., these are words that describe what "gruwelijk" means. But the word is also used to describe a cool situation. Like how "awe" in "awesome" really meant "terror" and "dread", or "reverence", but is now used to express amazement, without any negative connotations. So "gruwelijk" can be "awesome", "wicked", "sick", anything that means something aweful, but is used to express amazement, admiration and/or affirmation.
The entire text is composed of words that are inherently difficult to translate, or even to interpret. Most Dutch speakers wouldn't know what exactly is being said in the commercial. I think people did a great job though, in the comments. You know, they should let kids in schools translate that text in English classes.
any dutch person that was 15 to 20 years old around the year 2000 won't experience difficulty to understand what the grannies are actually talking about.
Make part 3 please. This brings me back
The clue of the family in the car that doesn't know English: It's supposed to be portrayed a stereotypical very Christian family. It's an old comercial I don't think it would pass the pre runs today.
Als David op het eind roept DOEIII lig ik altijd in een deuk, don't stop doing that.
Love this channel
Geweldig om die oude reclaimes 🤣🤣 weer eens te zien.
Even Apeldoorn Bellen stays the best Dutch commercials ever made xD
You two are so funny! Loved the video 🤩
Its the perfect time for a American Watches Dutch Commercials orange edition. :)
This is so awesome! Suggestions for the next one: Fruit Joy (HEE HIJ IS GROEN!!!11) and the Rolo Elephant! (And maybe a couple of Gouden Gids commercials, Shark comes to mind)! ☺
Love the video, fruit joy commercial in the car is also great to show David

I am bingewatching your videos, since i just found your channel. You are such a cute and very funny couple. My boyfriend an i can kinda relate in a way. We love to watch you together sometimes to have a laugh. Dankjewel en ik hoop meer te zien!
Leuk man! Greetz from the NL. Loved your humor.
The whole Omerta Falls reference went over both of their heads.
No, they just had to keep silent about it.
@@ytwos1 that was the joke about "omerta" right? :')
Yup! They missed it, and it indeed is the vow to remain silent against police and ministry of justice. A very poor principle. I hate criminals.
Really funny!! I liked the rolo commercial with the elephant from the 90s.
Centraal Beheer was so good at making epic commercials. With the motorboat, with the hypnotised man in the house in the hilĺs, with Bill Clinton, and also the ones shown in this video. Make a movie out of those, and I will laugh hard all day long. But the commercial with the grannies also was 'te gruwelijk'. 😄😄
AHHahahaha die cup a soup commercial hahahaha
you guys are awesome, I'm subscibing
Great watching you two enjoying this😇
Yes, sometimes I think about how a laugh ends 😂
The Versatel-commercial with the pigeon is also a classic.
That commercial about the witness protection program. I remember there was an online minigame they made, was funny.
A few I haven't seen before, the alien invasion lol, and the big carbdriving over the classic car lol
4:32.. when you trip.. Sef will laugh her ass off.. no kidding... when she gets her breath back, she might help you, or start another laughing sequnce, hahaha!!
Next time: Gouden Gids with the shark! My favorite! And the classic Rolo commercial with the elephant.
well thats funny, born and raised in The Netherlands but left many years ago and watching the grandma commercial I put the same face like the guy not completely understanding WTF is going on but is must be funny LOL

Ik kwam per ongeluk op dit kanaal en clip. Vet grappig hoe die kill reageert op oude NL reclames :)
They did make a video of all the achmea commercials. In my student house we had a dvd with 40 of them. Quite good when hungover and not knowing what to whatch.
Another funny video, you guys crack me up, Ga zo door ik vind jullie clips echt heel leuk, lekker lachen
8:40 I think this is one of the little aside stories in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I wanna say they stole it but it's a pretty faithful adaptation. :D

Loved the video. Greetings from Amsterdam. :)
My smile -> 😄😄 during the entire video
As long as you're going... some suggestions for part 3: Delta Lloyd: parade and botsauto, Centraal Beheer: beton, picnic and egel, Adecco: hidden jobs mind your step, pedestrian crossing and towel dispenser. ;-)
Het is groen en nu weer rood is gewelsigt
Douwe Egberts (2 ouwetjes) is echt de beste reclame ooit!

The umbro Comercial with the dog was really funny 😁 😂😅 can't remember if it was Dutch or British
Big fan! Some years ago, when the WK voetbal was played, Albert Hein had a very good commercial. With the woppies. The furry orange balls with sticky feet. The commercial was so good , A well known BBC soccer programm, showed the commercial twice in a row because they thought it was hilarious..and it was...
WK in English = WC
*Wuppies
At least add the link :) ua-cam.com/video/Q0RsX1XQ5OA/v-deo.html
Ohhh little additional detail that I feel the need to mention; I've spoken about the WK often (being a Dutch woman) to some Germans online.
I sometimes mocked them a bit, if we'd just won a basic from them OR if they had just lost and we were still in the game.
I'd type; 'Haha, hope you're having a great day today. Youknow, with the WK and how you lost and all :P'
And I always felt they overreacted when they disconnected the chat and I didn't understand why they were só sensitive about it, because the rest of what I said was always nice. (I love Germany and the German language and the Germans themselves.)
Then, one day, I read a German book that mentioned the Dutch. It said; 'Dutch people don't call it the WM (Weltmeisterschaft) because they call it the "WK." (Wereldkampioenschappen.) So, don't confuse that with the German "WK" (Weltkrieg a.k.a. Worldwar.)
So, when I mocked them, they appareantely thought I was referring to the second world war that they lost. Hence the reason they disconnected. xD
Felt the need to mention it, since it was about WK and WC and so on.
@@Widdekuu91 hahahaha nice.
It’s really funny to see you two react to Dutch shows. I was watching the kids shows. You should show him Alfred J. Kwak. I think it’s still the best Dutch kid show ever. Ga zo door
It's a bit slow but _really_ well-animated with excellent arc payoffs.
Kinda like Avatar the Last Airbender but Funny Animal European Sociopolitics. In the 90's.
Ik hou van die kitkat reclames! Ze zijn mijn favoriet. De eerste is die met de kat die de borstel (een staredown geeft en uiteindelijk) pakt/bespringt. "Die stekels zullen je echt niet beschermen hoor"
Loved the video. As an suggestion, Volkswagen has a very funny commercial with a red Golf and old lady.
Great music intro!
yeah centraal beheer aced making commercials a long time ago, damn they are a staple of the funny commercial
holland casino had some bangers alright too
In Flanders we used to have a commercial voor a tv provider Proximus. The commercial was featured a man who just lived his life and snippets from films were edited in. So he would be talking to Robert De Niro in a kind of Flemish-English hybrid. It gave rise to some great phrases: "who took my badjas" and "subiet no koffiekoeken for you".
Also the Coolblue ones are great, but only work well in Dutch. Translating them would be difficult I think
Jullie video’s zijn zo grappig!🤣🤣🤣
Douwe Egberts commercial was and still is hilarious

8:07 "Omerta" Falls. Nice one.
In the Cup a Soup commercial, the guy got hit by a windmill (kreeg een klap van de windmolen) which is a Dutch saying meaning "being crazy".
If you ever do another one of these please consider one of these.
-page reclame toilet 16s
-Heineken reclame mars 1m01s
-Centraal Beheer: Commercial Box (1992)
A funny thing. The commercial with the monster truck for the insurance company is actually being used in classes as a 'failed commercial'. They have such a whole range of funny and interesting commercials and at a time everyone knew the slogan 'Even Apeldoorn Bellen' (A quick call to Apeldoorn; which is a city). But nobody knew the ACTUAL company which the commercial was made for.
So super succesfull for getting the message across... but a failure for getting the company known. :D
the DOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEG at the end always makes it perfct :'D
Its doeiiii or doegg🤣🤣

@@JoshSweetvale Yeah, that's it.
Big difference, back then the ridiculousness of it all was allowed on TV. This commercial would likely no longer be allowed in the current situation. 🤣🤣

Nailed it with the 2020 commercials!
I was about to open that Douwe Egberts commercial in a new window so I could translate it here, but I see that there also is a version with subtitles already. :-) (At least in Dutch.)
But I see more people here already have translated it. in the comments.
You could also do that one with "Klote zon". (Eneco, I think?)
Haha, this is so entertaining. 'Even Apeldoorn Bellen' has some of the best commercials. I was expecting the one with the rapper and his voice-controlled car wich is my favourite one haha (Or did you already reacted on that on another video ?) I'm Dutch but some of these Apeldoorn commercials i didn't even know. What i do know is the one with the monster truck got banned after a horrible live event crash with a monster truck.
You also have from even Apeldoorn bellen if i remember it well. In a Zoo with a big aquarium and sharks when it goes wrong, and je even Apeldoorn moet bellen haha
Nope, that one was for the Gouden Gids (Yellow Pages) ;)
