I built the colt back in 1984. Miss going to the big event up in Iowa. Great memories. I had that same Futaba radio also. Great to see you modifying it!
Hi Joe! I finally managed to get my hands on the newer FrSky XHT module and made the conversion of my FP-T3, following your instructions (the XHT has one extra wire then the one you used, but it can be ignored, as it's for telemetry). Flew with it for the first time today and it worked great! Thanks!

i know this is a older post,, but im going to say hay,,, now i have a older plane,, loved my old futaba,, would like more information on getting my FP T6FN fully working with all 6 channels, what do i need to order?
i revived today from EBay - Futaba FP T6FN, hunting for the missing bits,, but i want to convert to 2.4 as a 6 channel were do i find parts?
Soldering tip from tech: remove old solder with desoldering braid. Hold wires to pad AND THEN add solder to heated wires and pad simultaneously.
The way you're doing it the flux is gone by the time you solder the new wire on resulting in a 'cold joint '. Prone to failure.
Never add solder and then add wires or components to 'old' solder.

So im making the rtv ghost trap from the new ghostbusters movie.
And the frsky receiver i have is connected to a traxxas stampede. So channel 1 is steering, which works perfect. And channel 2 connects to the esc/motor, which is only working is reverse.
I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the calibration between the two because I have a friend that has his working without anything special hooked up to it

Nice video. In you case, you had a radio which had trainer port, but in case the radio had no trainer port, how can I know where the ppm pin is to solder the 2,4 module cable?
I wish I knew an easy way to locate the PPM signal. Maybe check online for the schematics online. If it's an old radio someone might have posted the information somewhere.
Hello Joe, thanks for this video, I have a Futaba FP6FN and as I did not find the FRSkY module I bought the Corona 2.4GHz DIY DSSS transmitting module and receiver CT8Z+CR8D, I made the connections as the video indicates but it does not work, the TX communicates with the RX but does not complete the bind. I already checked the RX with another radio and the bind is well. Any suggestions to solve the problem?
Unfortunately I am not familiar with the the Corona System. I would expect it to work the same but not too sure. Sorry.
Is the FrSky DHT module still produced? I noticed it was out of stock everywhere I've looked.
Might not be. You be able to use a module in a case to do it but you will need to disassemble it and find the connections.
Just when I find your video to update some old radio's, the kit is discontinued.

You can do the same thing with the FrSky XHT. I recently converted a similar radio with it.
I have an old 4ch AM SANWA. Besides that one I have a 4ch FM W-Fly. Do you think they can be converted to 2.4?
Maybe, you would just need to locate the PPM out put on the board. I would do a search on google to see if someone has done this in the past. Someone might be able to tall you right where it is.
Thanks for the nice, clear tutorial. Back in the early 80's I used a similar Futaba radio on guess which airplane...a Sig Colt! Still have a picture of it. With this conversation, it would seem that those very old AM wide band radios are candidates. I was confused when you said you were connecting the PPM wire from the tx to the Frsky module. I thought PPM was strictly speaking FM modulatuon. What am I missing here? I would love follow your lead and convert my original Futaba to 2.4ghz.
Bingo Jamas the controller still puts out a ppm signal for the trainer port, that is the signal I tapped into.
The ppm signal is a series of pulses, the FM modulation of those pulses is done in the old RF section of the trasmitter, in this case I thought it was ann old AM set, but the modulation, in either case, AM or FM is done in the RF section.
Will this work with an AM surface transmitter? I have a vintage Futaba FP-T2F that I want to convert to 2.4GHz.

Joe, I have the same remote, might be an 8, gotta look but would you be interested in converting my radio, I have the original Piper cub from the 80s that I'm bringing back to life and this transmitter would be time appropriate for it. I could mail it to you, would of course pay.
Sorry, I no with the building of my full scale plane, I just don’t have the time. There is a guy that does it for a business. Google 2.4 conversion of of RC Radios. I think that is how I found it. I will look to see if I can find his website again.
Just simply go AM or FM 7.2 Mhz with the crystals !
Frank Napolitano thanks for the comment. Yes I could go that route, but I really wanted to go with newer tech inside so that it can be used for long term. I appreciate the feedback.
