In this episode we dive into an old Futaba 72mHz transmitter to give it new life! Watch as Josh, Josh and David summarize what it takes to do this. Afterwards, if you feel motivated, you can dig out your old transmitter to start hacking, drilling, and soldering with David's how-to tutorial below. And if you're still looking for more, we added a link to Paul Bitmatta's step-by-step video below that!

I did this as soon as you did this episode, saw a Flysky 35mHz for £9 new, bought the FrSky telemetry screen add on. Soldered it all in with a 3 pos switch, so I can still use the 35mHz receiver, FrSky and middle is no transmitter so the battery lasts longer when used with Computer simulator. Works perfect with ms Swift 2. Thanks Guys

I just gotta say I love these videos that you do. They put great information into the most entertaining format possible. Hobby King was smart to sponsor you, you basically have me sold on those simple delta wing planes, and I built my own bomb drop today.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Unfortunately the camera man did a bad recording. He was supposed to focus on the transmitter and not the talking.

I have the DIY in my JR 2610 and 9303 , the have given flawless operation for over 18 months , some of the meets have had over 100 pilots and this sytem held up well and was better than Spektrum dsm2 .

@keek1997 The plane only had the 2.4ghz RX. We were just switching it off, and then back on to check the re-link time.

I just switched my old Hi-Tec Flash Five, and it was totally easy. Three solders on to the trainer board, and instant hack! Just tested it on my DLG today...easy peasy lemon squeasy.

Something you might want to mention is that some of the 2.4 ghz moduals don't come with a range test function where the power of the modual can be reduced. Some flying events etc. won't allow you to fly with a modual that cannot be range checked.

It's true that I miss a lot of what you're saying because of the distraction of the music, but I don't think you said anything about the available range with any transmitter / receiver pair.
I know that a lot of people can mentally "tune out" the music - but I just can't.

  • @MikeHammer1

Putting the switch that allows going between 72MHz and 2.4GHz in such an exposed location on the Futaba T7CHP transmitter seems risky. Bump that switch while in flight and you will lose control of your aircraft. I made this conversion on the same model Futaba using the Corona CT8Z DIY module and used a recessed slide switch, much like the power switch, installed on the back of the unit. No possibility of an accident.
For people that think leaving both the 72MHz and 2.4GHz transmitters on at the same time, consider that you may forget to warn others that are still using 72MHz and shoot down their aircraft unintentionally. Also, operating both transmitters will drain the battery faster.

They did not really switch to 72Mhz. This was just to stop the 2.4 module from transmitting. With the switch at 72MHz position, the 2.4 receiver would not get any signal. As soon as they switch back, the 2.4 module would reboot, and reconnect. Some other 2.4 systems are pretty slow to re-bind. The FrSky is one of the best 2.4 systems available....
for the ones interested in modding your 9X transmitter.... do a google on ER9X firmware

Why does that wire need to be cut? I have a Futaba 9CHP, if I get the module, do I have to cut anything? I don't need to solder either right? It's just a module you plug in.

I added a switch to have 2.4 and also stock 72mhz module options in my FUTABA 7CAP radio. Frsky works perfect I think, but now wanted to try some old models in 72Mhz, and servos jitters and range is crap!!!! what can I do to correct my problems? what should i pay attention to (soldering, routing cables, the frsky is located inside the radio underneath the stock 72mhz module)
    thanks in advance!

Wow, I knew the ban on 72 was coming but I never paid much attention. Guess it sucks for all those AMA and club members out there. Don't get me wrong I fly 2.4 Spek and Futaba, however I also fly my 72MHz (have for over 20 yrs) on my larger balsa models and always will. 72 is more reliable. Every plane I have lost that was not pilot error was caused by 2.4 Spektrum/JR crap radio systems. Brown outs causing a reboot=crash, Thanks 2.4. Versus a glitch on 72 and your back instantly. Thanks but no.

Well I am thinking of getting the that 9 channel frysky flysky what ever it is through nitroplanes I guess since the hobby king Turnigy is always out. Same radio correct? Just different firmware from what I have read. You seem to like it like many others. If there is any info that I should know maybe between the nitroplanes version and Turnigy and you have time please stop by my page. 20 year pilot here and I fly 72, and 2.4.
