    A myriad of absurd questions by reporters. Will the bridge be rebuilt in a few weeks or a few months? Really? A journalist uttered that question? It's a span that goes across a very wide stretch of river that is 50-some feet deep. It will take several years at best.

      @@hangender did you not watch the video? Buttigieg stated that Biden's remarks on the federal government paying for the bridge are in lieu of what will be a lengthy investigation by the NTSB & coast guard to determine if any actors or individuals are at fault and then follow the word of the law in holding them accountable (in this case financially) to recoup funds.
      Now, if you rather we wait a few months for the investigation to then clean up the fallen bridge and then a few years in international court to get money out of the chartered company which owns the Dali, and then at that point, have a new bridge in much longer a time, be my guest.

There would not have been much time, but they had trucks right there. There are big questions about the fuel. Do they use seawater to rebalance the tanks like they used to do? Was there sludge at the bottom of the fuel tanks? They could build elongated concrete perimeters and fill the middle with dredge.

    • @ohnonomorenames
      @ohnonomorenames Місяць тому +2

      Assuming it was running at about 100t and was traveling at 8 knots the ship had about 3MJ of kinetic energy.
      This is equivalent to 1500lbs of TNT
      All of this energy ended up focused directly at the bridge pier.
      40 years ago a 100t ship leaving harbor at 8kn was not imaginable for this bridges designers.
      They also were very aware that over designing the piers would have drastically increased the cost of construction.
      In the years in between people have run the numbers on how much it would cost to reduce the risk.
      Spending money on bridges that were ready to fall down was the priority.
      For reasons best known to the voters, increasing taxes to pay to improve the other bridges was not approved.
      And so Americas infrastructure has started to fall down.
      In part due to accidents but more often due to age.
      The bridges were built when America 'could do things' but...
      Whelp time happens and can do becomes could do and, well ask the Italians.

      @@ohnonomorenames There really isn't a bridge that is going to ever be economical and fit the criteria needed to withstand that impact. What they could do when rebuilding is add sectioned support that is unique to it's position to maintain more of the structural integrity of the other lengths if an impact happened (basically so that the entire thing does not collapse) but there is nothing they can do here that would make sense to actually have that support pillar and section of the bridge withstand this impact.

    The Minnesota bridge took 13 mos. to rebuild! They've offered their experience as a form of assistance. Theirs was over the Mississippi, not the ocesn, of course and not a mile long.

    That bridge will likely take 3 years till its back open. I saw maritime lawyers saying the owner will not be held liable for the full damage amount. This is because of a old maritime law called "titanic law" that limits civil and other lawsuits. I'm angered to hear that the tax payers will front the bill for the apparent accident/ recklessness.

    • @wolfpants
      @wolfpants Місяць тому

      @Cslayer121 Not sure about "fronting" the bill. Sounds like those insurance limits will likely be around $3B. Not sure what else would be done if there's still a funding gap needed for replacement.

      Corporate taxes were 50% in 1950s , now Corporate taxes are less than 20% . They pay less than middle class Americans . The republicans constantly say the want to de-fund social security, medi-care , cheaper medications for elderly " sundown the entitlements " they tax Americans and give corporations more tax breaks. Time to tax corporations to pay their fair share instead of bankrupt middle class . That will help fund Americans and the bridge . Biden passed the infrastructure bill that will pay for bridge

    In the 1950s thru the 70s a tugboat would escort ships outta the harbor. Meaning no billion dollar accidents or sabatoge to protect the taxpayer.
    Deregulated for offshore shipping companies....comprehend.
