Also another reason why this was so great is that it was written with the actors voices in mind. Joey and Joe sound better in this musical than any starkid musical cause they're singing in their natural octave, not a high falsetto or some sort of comedic voice. They're both incredibly talented and get to show off that talent in saf
I find it..terrifying..that Lauren choreographed torture tango like its such a dark number and SHE DID THAT. Knowing Lauren choreographed this show and all her backround details she included... and just..god she did so well it foreshadows so amazingly and tells such a story of its own just..goddamn-
You forgot when Curt said “Owen” in Torture Tango, DMA touched the back of his head to check if his mask is still on because he thought Curt recognizes him
another thing thats SO COOL is in torture tango, when curt and owen are both singing, the lines "doesnt even matter if i killed my best friend" and "show you the horror of staying alive" overlap which i find very oof ouch painful :,)
Watched this musical for the first time recently, something i love is how the "get the girl" phrase is used subversively by being entirely literal. When Cynthia says to "get the girl and save the day" (paraphrasing), she means it literally. Tatiana is a girl that he needs to "get" as a part of his job because she was too good at her job and he needs the stuff she took. And, he also "gets the girl" in the way that they bond, become friends, and she ends up switching sides. So not even that line is filler!
Okay but ive never seen anyone mention how in ‘One Step Ahead’ Owen’s lines are LITERALLY ahead of Curt’s- he starts the chorus before Curt and Curt’s lines are behind his and eventually begin to overlap until they’re both singing at the exact same time which is reflective on how the scene progresses and how Curt catches up to Owen eventually. aLSO the lighting in the opening sequence on Curt and Owen switches between red and blue for them both. Red typically signifies passion, rage, blood and anger- those types of things. Blue is serenity, calmness, tranquility and in some forms purity too. Blue is seen as a hopeful, kinder colour in comparison to the harsher, crueller tones of red. The brilliance of this is that both Curt and Owen are blue and red at different points, both within the song and the musical as a whole. It really links into Owen singing ‘no one’s innocent’ because they aren’t!!! Also on a more base analysis, how each progress. From what I remember, Curt is initially blue and Owen is red- but that changes around the lines of ‘who do you trust, who do you betray’. Curt is our protagonist and therefore automatically blue- he’s purity and justice and righteousness whereas Owen is venomous fury but it actually isn’t so. At points we see how Owen fits with blue- he’s calm, cool and level-headed even when facing situations that would freak people out (seeing Curt again, torturing Curt n all that). Curt has strong elements of red- he’s passionate and whimsical and rash, seen throughout the entire musical but more specifically during ‘We Love the Prince’ and the scenes that follow. Then right at the end before Curt shoots, both Owen and Curt are cast in white light which is symbolic of peace, neutrality, purity and origin (all light comes from White light, representing the origin of colour similar to how we learn the origin of Curt and Owen’s relationship and I would say we learn the origin of Owen’s hate for Curt on a deeper, intimate level). Then suddenly, Curt shoots and he’s bathed in red light which is *technically* Owen’s colour. It’s just such a brilliant representation of the duality of man and really brilliant dramatic irony when you rewatch the show.
Want me to (possibly) cause you to realize more heart-rending stuff?? When Owen starts to get emotional about his and Curt's relationship, he lowers his gun to point at Curt's heart. When he goes back to his plan and ignoring his emotions, he points it at Curt's head. When Curt decides to move on from his and Owen's relationship and his feelings for Owen, he points the gun at Owen's head
Me, talking to people about this show: Yeah it’s got a lot of good comedy and the songs are great Me talking to people who also watched it: *It’s so f^cking sad I’m going to die*
Ok but in Torture Tango when Curt says "doesn't even matter if I killed my best friend" at the same time that DMA says "to show you the horror of staying alive"
HI I JUST REALIZED THAT THE OPENING SCENE IS A LITERAL FORESHADOWING OF TORTURE TANGO OWEN PUNCHES CURT ACROSS THE FACE AS AN ACT FOR THE OTHER GUY DMA PUNCHES CURT ACROSS THE FACE IN THE SAME WAY *EXCEPT HE ACTUALLY MEANS IT THIS TIME*
ALSO--okay no more caps, sorry--this might just be my own interpretation of the song, but hear me out (and hang on, cuz this is a long one): "The Coldest Goodbye" is Owen's theme. *Lurking in the shadows watching your every move* - Owen has probably been keeping an eye on Curt for all of those years, plotting and scheming, ready to get back at him. Maybe not directly, but he probably kept files on him and used what he knew as his partner to pick him apart further. *Tall, dark, and dangerous* - This one's more obvious. I mean, c'mon, Joey's pretty tall. But dark, that could be referring to the evil that festered in him after grieving that he had been betrayed. And dangerous... well, his cover name was Deadliest Man Alive. That says it all. *A man with nothing to lose* - He literally has nothing. As far as we know, Curt was all he had, and as he said, his feelings died when he was left for dead *Women can't resist him* - This one is tricky, but let's take in the fact that there is the possibility of him being bi- or pansexual. We don't know if the relationships he may have in the past were all men. But if we rule out that little detail, there's also this: Cynthia clearly loves Owen. Not literally, but she does respect him more than Owen. The line doesn't have to be taken from a romance point of view. It can be platonic, too. *Villains can't escape* - Baron von Nazi was a villain in the play, and he killed him. But also, from HIS perspective, CURT is the villain. *The sharpest of shooters* - We can see that Owen is very skilled in combat. And like he said, Curt prefers to wing it. That probably means that he's the brains of the operation, coming up with a way to escape, how von Nazi gets the prince, all that jazz. Again, "the sharpest of shooters" could be metaphorical for his other skills. *Your heart he'll break* - A direct jab at Curt. AND a foreshadowing. He WILL break his heart (even more) once he finds out what he's become. And he does. Curt even says it in "One Step Ahead". ("You know you broke my heart!") And my final point: Owen sings the reprise of the same song. Okay, done now. If you've stuck around to read this, thanks for doing so! Sorry that this was so long.
Headcanon: the reason MK is singing in the beginning in Audrey Hepburn-esqe clothing is because she's used her new identity from the end and ended up as a club singer.
Joey as Owen sounds EXACTLY like one of my friends and it gives me chills every time because she is really into theatre and acting to, the "should have been an actor scene creeps me out so much"
The hints that DMA is Owen: His accent shifting, touching the back of his head to check his mask, singing the beginning of Torture Tango behind Curt's ear in what he *knows* is his sensitive spot, as established scene one
I love that Curt thinking of Owen in the casino is set to a hum of "I do what I do so you can do what you do" I mean there's many things you can think he's thinking if you try to get specific like "we were supposed to be working together, I failed him." Whatever. Mostly i can't stop thinking about how, in retrospect, this is minutes after this song was introduced in the context of Barb. It's basically a theme for unrequited (or at least unavailable) love, and only a few people will understand that on a first viewing
I interpret that as Curt trying to ground himself to the situation by singing the song at hand. He sings "Somebody's Gotta Do It" and "Eyes On The Prize" to make himself focus. In contrast to "Torture Tango", he's singing his leitmotif (Spy Again) to distract himself for the pain
I've seen things now that I never paid attention to before like the stuff Owen is doing up there or I never realized when Owen reveals himself as DMA that Joey is talking and not Joe. Don’t know how I haven’t noticed this but incredible video
I didn’t notice that Joey was talking either. I didn’t realize realize a lot of the meaning in the musical until after but god it hits you like a ton of bricks
Ok this might sound weird but “the warmest hello to the coldest goodbye” and just the whole first song directly foreshadowing Curt and Owen’s relationship reminds me of “Think of Me” in Phantom of the Opera.
