  • Last time we finally found and bought DR350S for Marta.
    This bike is actually not running and it spent last years in the garage not used.
    It looks like it is in nice condition so we decided to buy it and rebuild it!
    During first try of engine startup we've found out there is no fuel coming out of the carburetor to the engine. In this video we are going to check the carburetor.

    All your Dr350 videos are just awesome, for a Beta M4 (it mounts dr 350 motor) owner like me they are lifesaving.
    Thanks to you and your guides i can do all the maintenance to my bike much more faster, better, safer and on my own... putting hands on it is a pleasure like this.
    Thanks a lot, greetings from Italy :)

      We already know that there is the same engine in Beta ... you can swap the Beta's e-start engine to DR and enjoy e-start :D We hope there will be more and more useful videos about DR and XR :)

    Thank you for documenting an important repair. If carb not right, engine wouldn't run well. Carbs do need maintenance because of rubber age and ethanol in fuel. For a small engine that is user repairable, carbs are still the simpler way to go.
    Also thanks for documenting the correct main jet and pilot jet. I notice some of the carb rebuild kits have incorrect hole size in the new jets they provide. Let me add knowledge about that mystery vaccum port that you plugged. In the US, that port was plumbed to a special fuel tank valve that shut off fuel when the engine was not running, I guess some type of safety feature. Just get a new generic fuel tank valve without that feature, keep spare fuel tank valves because ethanol eventually eats nylon filters on the fuel tank valve. Like you I plugged my carb vaccum port but a few years latter my rubber plug cracked causing a vaccum leak. This leak would not be good if you are on a remote trail ! To more permanently plug that port, I carefully tapped it and put in a 8-32 x 1/2 machine screw . Don't know what the metric screw equivalent would be. I am also having good history with a lithium battery. Happy riding. !

    • @DawidMartasMotoAdventures
      @DawidMartasMotoAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the clarification on the vacuum port. We have never rechecked this rubber plug, but it seems like a good idea. Anyway the idea of threading the vacuum port and plugging it with a screw seems good :)
      Cheers!

    My DR 92 has 30,000 miles runs great.
    Vacuum operated petcock line port. Constant velocity diaphragm type carburetor. Oiled foam air cleaner. A premium iridium plug will last virtually for life.

      Can you send me type/name of this iridium spark plug?

      Dawid&Marta's Moto Adventures
      NGK iridium BR8EIX. Put a bit of high temp anti seize on threads, do not cross thread, a bit of dielectric grease in boot.
      My faithful old DR starts on third kick. Will run all day no problems. I use premium O ring chain and chain wax for each run.
      I enlarged air box opening and use UNI filter. The mount screw is a bit of a pain to access so my wife Julie get the call with her small hands.
      I sold my 82 KE 175 to get my DR 350 in 92. Had over 10,000 miles on it ran as new. Wish I would have kept it as well. But I have 5 motor cycles. Hard to keep them all.

      Yes, it is hard to mount air filter in airbox. We changed air filter from paper to sponge and we oil it from time to time. It is better for offroad use.

    Thank you for this video. I also had a hard time starting my dr350 and I plugged that little hole like you did where there was vacuum leak from choke compartment and it starts a lot easier now. I used to kick it 30+ times to start it, now it starts usually 3-6 kicks. With that said, the bike is new to me, so once I figure out how to properly kick it, I could probably start it in 1 kick. I used a piece of shrink wrap to make a little cap that went over that little vacuum hose protrusion.

      Ehm ... this comment was marked as spam and hided :<
      That's good to hear you also solved this problem! The best way to start this bike for me:
      0) Fuel on, choke on (when engine is cold), kill switch, ignition switch, neutral gear...
      1) Push kickastarter until you can feel resistance.
      2) Press decompressor lever, it should stay pressed.
      3) Press a little kickstarter lever, decompressor lever should pop out after very little push.
      4) Free kickstarter lever and let it move to the top.
      5) Now it is time for strong kick.
      6) If engine is not running - go to 1.
      You should use decompressor lever to avoid cracks in inner part of clutch cover :)

    the port on the choke line is vacuum for the stock vacuum petcock. Many owners go to a normal petcock and thus need to close that port. Nice video though! I have at least one bad o-ring in my carb causing all sorts of leaks and it won't start at all!

    • @DawidMartasMotoAdventures
      @DawidMartasMotoAdventures  5 років тому +1

      I was thinking that DR350S has "normal petcock" as standard, but this carb is used also in other bikes - so there is vacuum port present for other bikes. Thanks for information and good luck! I hope your bike will start soon :)

    • @Breezy-Leaves
      @Breezy-Leaves 5 років тому +2

      I've only seen the vacuum petcock / fuel tap on North American bikes, so I assume this was a regulation there that Europe didn't have at the time. Much safer to have the vacuum type, because if the float was stuck open and you left the fuel tap on, you just get a dangerous fuel leak on the floor or into the crankcase, or both.

    • @DawidMartasMotoAdventures
      @DawidMartasMotoAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Hi!
      There is no hole in diaphragm. When there is hole in diaphragm then bikes run lean - there is air leakage and diaphragm can't pull the needle to open main fuel jet ... but probably small hole make no big difference

      This is possible. Sometimes motorcycles uses vacuum operated equipment, like: fuel pump, petcock, chain oiler... . It is only vacuum port, providing vacuum. There are 2 overflow connectors: one at the bottom of floater bowl, and one at the side of carb 6:14
      There is also one vacuum port and one fuel line.
