1)Push decompression lever, it should stay pressed in 2)Push a little kickstart lever, decompression lever should "click" and back to normal position 3)Kick hard 4)Go to 1 if not started DR is great bike!
Thanks, but I owned this bike for 2 years now and decompression lever worked 0 times for me. Maybe because my bike has airbox mod and rejeted carb, but decompression never works.
@Billy Hickey its funny because I had an XR500 and I learned how to kick my Dr350 from kicking my old Xr500 lol When I was selling the XR the buyer was kicking it like he was trying to start a 2 stroke. I thought he was going to hurt himself. He kicked it 15 times until he was out of breath, then I got on it, pushed the kick starter past that tight spot, kicked it once and the bike started right away
Tried what you said to do and it worked just like you said it would!! Cannot thank you enough. Didn't think I'd ever get it started. Thank you, Sir Dune Master.
Going to look at a dr350s some time this weekend. The guy said its probably no good because of how hard it is to start. Im just going to check a few things and see if this video helps me start it. If i cant get it to start in a timely manner, then i dont need it. If this video helps me start it, then im paying cash and having myself a good time.
starting my old bullet is similar - what you are doing is getting the engine JUST past top dead centre on the compression stroke, so you have the best position for the full kick. on a bullet, it also prevents `kick back` which can be painful on a big single!
@@dunemaster3179 nice, good thinking. It's always good to have a plan B. Did you ever manage to drain the battery while in the field? in the worst case, you can always start the bike by rolling down a hill and putting the gear in
@@ralphderkapitaen9875 I never drained it in a field, but I did drain it a few times at home because I installed usb charger to the battery and it had a slow drain. Kickstarter is definitely not necessary and I probably wont ever use it, but its nice to have.
For me I guess every bike is a little different, my bike is a 91 dr350 dirt model and for me cold start is hold decomp lever for 6 kicks then find the sweet spot give just a small bump past top dead center like the video shows and give it a strong kick. The way it was discribed to me was Suzuki didn’t engineer the starting gear correctly and it’s said to be to fast so going just a hair past too dead center tends to be the sweet spot...... Anyway hot start can be a little tough due to now the bike is hot and is vaporizing gas in the carb and the cylinder causing vapor lock...... so give it 10-12 kicks with the decomp lever pressed in to clear it out, find too dead center give it a slight bump and give it hell, works every time for me.
Thanks for your input. I need to update this video because I did some adjustments and now it starts way easier. About 2 weeks ago I was trail riding and dropped the bike and snapped my decompression cable, and once I replaced it with a new one, the bike starts first kick with decompression. Also, the way you describe how to start your DR350 is just a good all-around way to start a 4 stroke. Another thing, I never had an issue hot starting my bike, it always starts easy first kick. Cheers.
I am here because I am looking at picking up a 1996 Dr350 tomorrow and I noticed it has a kickstart. I don't mind kickstarters. I have a KLR 250 that usually fires up every kick and no compression lever the dr has
Does anyone know if the general mechanics and layout of the 250 and 350 are the same? I get the displacement is different but I’m curious about the rest
I know this is 3 years later and you probably wont answer but I have a dr250 and that thing is a pain to start and the kick is back firing at me do you know what the problem could be?
I have an 88 DR 200 that has compression release lever....I guess it's normal for it to click back after kicking it? Are you holding the compression release when you are getting fuel into system good? I'm referring to, when you said press decompress lever, kick over several times? Just wondering because my 88 has some serious compression to be just a 200 and the decompress clicks back after first kick but have also read to hold it open.....and info on that would be appreciated. Thanks
That's not really the correct starting method for these although it might work great for you. Your supposed to pull the decompression lever in and let go, it will stay in. Then kick it slowly until the lever pops out, raise the Kickstart lever then give it a good kick
That was the carb and I think he meant thats only an issue if you have an aftermarket tank that the fuel line is lower than it should be. Don't worry about that unless you have that huge acerbis tank

I’m taking a break in the AC right now, from hyperventilating trying to start this 90 350 a friend brought me to work on.
Going to try this
I feel this. Any luck?

learning the feel of kickstarting. is a lost art form...almost like driving a manual....
Good info! I just got one of these. can't wait to ride it when the snow melts!
Rode mine in the snow a couple days ago , it was Awesome
Good stuff Man. Spend a good 20 kicks usually to get mine going. Will definitely give it a Kick 😉

and thats why the electric starter was added into the newer models..:-)
And that’s why I have the electric start model now too. I did add Kickstarter just in case I drain the battery.

does the vacuum port stay blocked off 24/7 or just while starting? how do you block it off?

As far as I’m aware, using the decomp lever as you say just locates the optimal spot. He’s doing the same thing, just finding the spot by feel.
How do you block that piece off that’s on the engine ?
