Here's a game for all of you. Turn off the screen, hide it or whatever and put on ear phones. Then every singer that comes on guess if you know them or not (hard version: guess the name of the singer.) Then turn it over and see if you got them right. You start to notice how distinct how everyone's voice is, it may be the same song, but everyone makes it their own in some way or another.
It also helps you check your prejudices! You may think someone’s the best cause you’re a die hard fan then realize that there are others even better or just as good
@@iheartyouandme4ever It's the worst version I heard. It feels hollow. To be honest though, a musical director influenced my perception of the 2018 cover. Sir Fortich commended her technique but it is very lacking in "coloring", which is important in broadway songs.
As much as I love Stephanie, she only did about one or two workshop sessions before auditions were called for Elphaba, and then it was down between her and Idina which Idina gained because of her fame from RENT and dropping the "f" bomb in her audition....and it was Idina who did the tryouts, aka the San Francisco Early Runs as well as the Workshops between 2001-2003. But Stephanie is indeed one of the greatest Elphabas out there, right up there with Idina.
MrFansley I didn’t know that they did some in LA, I thought that they tried it out in San Francisco. At least that is what Kristin Chenoweth said in her autobiography. I am not saying you are wrong; I just thought they tried the show out in only one city before heading to Broadway.
Ariana Grande is an amazing singer who’s made for broadway, but judging from her newest version of The Wizard and I versus this one, she is too focused on the voice she BUILT for pop music rather than her real, and what I think is much better, Theatre voice.
Harlan D. Kind of but based on the new vs old in the new one she has way more control over her voice enough to add extra notes in the newest one and the old one her voice was kind of bland but still good.
Can you blame her though? She would no doubt have had a successful and rewarding career on Broadway. But as a pop star she's stupid rich and several years away from even turning 30.
Honestly she had way less control over her old voice even though she has better pronunciation. What’s important is that now she’s making the music she wants to make and singing the way she wants to sing.
The idea that we have one 'real' voice is not a healthy one, tbh. Being able to adapt and control intonation etc to perform different styles is hugely important and requires a lot of hard work on the singers part.
I gotta say, hands down, Jessica Vosk (1:10) absolutely kills this climax, and blows away any other competition. If we're going by "the best," hers is by far the cleanest, and so, so smooth and pleasing to the ear. The early riff on her "and I-" is absolutely beautiful. Sounds very much in character, doesn't take you out of the performance. Her voice moves like a wave and is truly effortless. I'll say my second favorite is Rachel Tucker (9:45). So, so much power, and it doesn't even sound like she's straining to get there. That growl she does on her "and" is stunning. Her notes don't waver whatsoever. When she's holding the final note, she. sustains. it. and. does. not. let. it. drop. Such an impactful performance and so definitive.
Some people just have the perfect voice for a song. I really struggle to think how someone would be able to perform this song better than Vosk at a technical level. Someone may well prefer another version and singer, but Vosk, technically, is flawless here.
1. Donna Vivino, when she starts sustaining, it just rings soo strongly in your ear! 2. Jessica, I LOVE the variation she does with the I 3. Danna, very impressive belt! 4. Christine, solid.
Rachel was the first Elphaba I ever saw perform in Wicked and she was everything to a fellow Northern Ireland girl. She's unbelievable. Her and Wilemijn are the vocalists I look up to for this song.
Donna Vivino was my favorite Elphaba. I could listen to Donna sing the phone book. She was spectacular. Always giving props to Idina for originating the role, but Willamjin was my second fav. after Donna
Lindsay is my favourite Elphaba she’s so down to earth in real life. Her acting throughout the wizard and I and all her other songs astonishes me. She keeps me engaged. I’m sad I never got to see her live.
My thoughts: - idina is queen 👸 - shoshana poweeeeerrrrr Yaaas - Jessica has a really sweet Disney like tone and I’m really loving it - lea is my giiirrrll so of course i loved her version - Kerry is amazing in general with what she can do and her versatility so I’m not surprised she did so well - Ariana.... well i loved her voice back then but she needs to stop with this bubble gum pop singing tone it’s not as good - Avery surprised me with his vibrato and general tone i loved it - Stephanie, well we all know she’s a beast. He also shaped the last riff really nicely - eden.... do i even need to say it?? She’s killer! She did seem tired tho which i can imagine - Jacqueline had beautiful tone to her voice - Jackie’s was pretty but the notes seemed to get away from her a bit at times - rachel seeems to be a fan favorite and i can see why! i've always loved Jemma's tone in this song, especially when she does the F#5 on "feeling things IIIIIII've never felt". But there's so many good Elphaba's in this video, Lindsay, Jessica, Donna and Rachel are probably my absolute faves for this song though. Now can we talk about how messy Lea's band was?? 1:36

Molly Levinthal that’s called tongue tension and it is the reason she got nodules from singing the role 8 times a week. It puts unnecessary and harmful tension on the folds.
I have no idea who won because everyone was so amazing but I just want to mention Jemma Rix. She was the first elphaba I saw in wicked and she was incredible. She helped fuel my wicked and broadway obsession and as an Australian it’s hard to do an American accent but she maintained it for the whole show while sounding phenomenal
I love to see your videos and see how much a song in a musical has evolved into every singers own way! Wicked has definitely been one of those evolved shows. 😍💚💗
Here's a game for all of you.

Jessica Vosk hands down every time

AHHHH JESSICA VOSK. I FORGOT HOW AMAZING SHE IS
Amanda Dunbar I got to see her in Orlando it was so amazing :)
THE BEST ELPHABA PERIODT
I saw her in Buffalo for a field trip, she took my breath away ❤️
Okay, but how you gonna listen to Jessica Vosk milk that 9 with that IMMACULATE vowel on the last "I" and tell me she's not supreme?
RIGHT! that tone ughh
Tag yourself I'm Idina's tongue.
sergio vela OMG!
I'm Idina's jawline

Mister Golightly Most beautiful jaw ever XD

She's performing in Pittsburgh currently I believe

Tristian Pace I had that one but idk bc it's such a classic and there's sooo many renditions
Mister Golightly, is it No Good Deed?
No good deed climax!
In my eyes, the best Elphaba will always be Jessica Vosk! 💚
Agree
Jessica is everything
I totally agree I saw her
SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!
I like her too
i wish ariana went the musical theatre route... i miss her actually enunciating
when she sings broadway she can still enunciate very well though

Stephanie J. Block actually originated the role and worked it through tryouts out of town. She was replaced with Idina Menzel when it came to NY.

No, Idina was in some of the tryouts. At least that is what I heard or I might have read it in Kristin Chenoweth’s autobiography.
She played the role in LA, first time I saw it. Snatched out every hair on my head, especially after “Defying Gravity”. She’s amazing.

To me I find the “ee” in “teeaam” the most tricky to sing. Some of them tried to modify it to “eh”, some tried to riff through it because they couldn’t sustain the straight sound/aim for the right pitch, some took a breath too long, some got too screamy, some got too loud. Rachel tucker ! The tone, the raps and that growllllll

I really like Stephanie J. Block. But I am a little biased towards her, anyway.

Stephanie 😍
Idina's tongue looks odd
No tongue pressure at all haha
Well she is a witch after all
It's proper placement for some of those notes.
Molly Levinthal that’s called tongue tension and it is the reason she got nodules from singing the role 8 times a week. It puts unnecessary and harmful tension on the folds.
Molly Levinthal It’s seriously not, that tongue position is a big contributor as to why Menzel can’t sing anything above D5 reliably anymore.
Hands down, Stephanie J Block!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSSS
I have no idea who won because everyone was so amazing but I just want to mention Jemma Rix. She was the first elphaba I saw in wicked and she was incredible. She helped fuel my wicked and broadway obsession and as an Australian it’s hard to do an American accent but she maintained it for the whole show while sounding phenomenal
But rachel tucker's growl on AAAAND is giving me real actual goosebumps
I love to see your videos and see how much a song in a musical has evolved into every singers own way! Wicked has definitely been one of those evolved shows. 😍💚💗
