In 2011 Jose Feliciano was asked who he thought are the best guitarists today. He said the only guitarist he could think of is Tommy Emanuel. There hasn't been any great guitarist in the last 40 years.
Man...Vito Bratta from White Lion is probably one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, that guy was so different of the other players from the 80's, melodic solos with lots of notes sometimes but without many notes sometimes, but always incredible!
Great list that I agree with 100%. I was surprised John Sykes didn't make the list. Highly underrated and his work with Tygers of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and Blue Murder is phenomenal.

Yeah you don’t get the Ozzy gig just after Randy dies and not be a monster! I was in middle school and was very familiar with Brad he was highly respected not sure he’s underrated! Omg, Carlos was my very first favorite guitarist when I first started playing guitar in the early 80's! I was totally blown away from his playing at the '83 US festival, as well as Battle Axe and Cum On Feel the Noize solos.
@@GearGasms for decades there have been a LOT of non-Caucasian fretmasters that are phenomenal and extremely overlooked. Not saying that you should've mentioned them but they deserve far more credit than what they've received. Not long ago I discovered Ryo Kawasaki and Nyugen Le.
Have to agree, for what he's done over the last 40 years! Sure he's made several mag covers and is known within the guitar community, but nowhere near enough given how prolific he's been. What a great player, and helluva nice guy!
@@DrumsTillDeath74 as a drummer you could appreciate this. An old friend of mine used to see Kenny Aaronoff do drum clinics. He'd start out with a RIPPING solo and then say to the audience, "Wanna get gigs? DON'T do that."
Andy Summers influenced Alex Lifeson, who admitted on a number of occasions that he was a fan of his playing. You can hear it in songs like New World Man and Distant Early Warning, for example.
I don't know if you have mentioned this guitarist, but I always liked him. He has a Hendrix feel to his playing. That would be Frank Marino. I use to listen to him when he was with Mohagany Rush.

Ian Crichton from Saga is sooooo damn underrated. Great technique in general but especially his muted/staccato sound, but also uncommon riffs and solos. Check out his heavy guitar sound on "Easy Way Out" and keep in mind that this has been recorded in 1984. No one sounded like this at that time. For me he was way ahead. ua-cam.com/video/ZYbcq1rU6x4/v-deo.html

I’d put Criss Oliva of Savatage on that list. Criss was honestly the best in the world no one truly gave recognition to which is unfortunate considering he passed at such a young age.
All your lists have been a lot of fun, and really spot on. One of my fav’s from the 80’s was the great Trevor Rabin. He checked all the musical boxes, not to mention filling the shoes of one of the greatest guitarists of all time.... Steve Howe🙂
Dave Murray is one of my personal favorites and I don't like how some people have put him as an afterthought in the band. I think Adrian gets more hype (arguably so) because when he got in the band their was a significant change for the better in the riffs and solos. It's kind of like Paul singing vs Bruce, both fit the playing style of the band on their specific albums; however, Bruce had way more range and it catapulted the band to Arena tours and gave Maiden the ability to explore new sounds and stretch their musical range. Adrian did the same thing, hence he gets more props over Dave, which I get, but that to me doesn't diminish Dave's ability. Also, when Adrian was gone, their albums kind of blew. No Prayer for the Dying was awful, Tail Gunner should have been called Aces High Pt.2, and Fear of the Dark was better, but Maiden didn't get back to form until Adrian showed up (Bruce back helped as well). Sorry to drag this comment out, but one last note, Bruce's solo music got a ton better when Adrian played on them.

And he was the nicest "Rock Star" you'd ever meet, even let me play 1 of his '78 Dean Flying V's ! 4:40 -Jeff Golub was a great player, he played w/ Rod Stewart in the mid 1980s too and later on in the 1990s became a very fine Crossover Jazz player as well, w/ the group Avenue Blue, doing a kinda like a softer toned and more economic George Benson style Funky smooth jazz. #5 Andy Summers is a great player, his roots are in Jazz, he's subtle player who knows a lot about harmony colours and textures, not a typical rock player.
The bass player, Perry Richardson for Firehouse, currently with Stryper, is from our little town of Conway, SC. Firehouse was an awesome band, and people around here loved them. Small town boy hit it big!!! 7 million records sold worldwide. Not mind blowing, but still, a testament to their popularity? That is all I have to say!
One thing I wanted to point out here that I forgot to in another video was that Brad Gillis played for Ozzy right after Randy was killed. It wasn’t Jake E. Lee. I love Jake E. Lee by the way!
I know that but he didn't really do an album with them except the live thing. The new official, "permanent" replacement was Jake E Lee. Bernie Marsden was in the mix finishing that tour as well!
Jake wasn't even the first choice for the permanent guitarist. They picked Gearge Lynch (who had also auditioned when Randy originally got the job) but quickly changed their minds and rejected George again. Things worked out OK for George ultimately, lol.
I'd have to put Vivian Campbell in there. His Dio soloing was really unique because he's so Rory Gallagher influenced. A hammer and pull speed demon and squeal freak for sure (a notch below George Lynch, about even with Jake E Lee), but Rory style ultra bluesy licks with a really heavy yet controlled picking attack mixed in. He didn't crank out iconic riff after riff like Warren DeMartini did, but I prefer Vivian's soloing.
I’ll have to dig into some more Viv with Dio. I never got onto Dio too much back then but now that I have Apple Music I can do so without a big investment. Thanks for the comment - I have a whole playlist of these if you’re interested! 🎸
@@davedavid7061 You couldn't be more wrong, he was and is a highly sought after session musician. Toto has sold Millions and Millions of albums, Rosanna won record of the year & song of the year for two or more vocal arrangements and were highly successful. As a side note, the most requested solo for Guitar Player For The Practicing Musician in the 80's was his solo(s) in Rosanna. Among guitar players, he is in the upper echelon, far above ANYONE on this list and just about anyone you can think of. He and/or Larry Carlton were on just about every album in the 70's-early 80's.
Dont like motley crue either...just a bunch of kiss copies. Mick mars was just ok....he admitted on eddie trunk that motley crue was britney spears...fake vocals and rythmn guitars playing "live " nah...motley crue had a few good songs. Acted tough by drinking ice tea on stage. Yawn
Agree. His comments about groupies drawing the short straw was funny and probably true. I always thought he looked like a space alien or a cast member from Rocky Horror. Not a big Crue fan, but a fan of his tone and muscle car sound he brought to the band. Shout at the Devil and Dr. Feelgood are the two albums to have by them, imo.
I think one underrated and never mentioned guitarist is Eliott Easton of the Cars, Slash cited him as an influence. Listen to the rockabilly lick on "Best Friend's Girl"

He could play circles around guitarists who were more famous. But instead, he became a star in the US in the 90s because of a blues song. 🤨
@@GearGasms When he joined TL for the recording of the Black Rose album he had chops to spare. Because before that he was playing technically intricate stuff in Colosseum II. That took his already impressive skills to a next level.
In my opinion, the most talented guitarist ever played most of his time in the 80s, and since he isn't usually considered as such, I put him on this list. The best I have heard is he has been considered the best blues player ever. Eric Clapton, a top notch blues player in his own right, said that this guy didn't play the blues, the blues flowed through him like a conduit. ua-cam.com/video/i6G53BMgugo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/KC5H9P4F5Uk/v-deo.html Stevie Ray Vaughan played the blues, but he could have played any genre and played it like he owned it. The guitar was an extension of Stevie, and the amount of action he could get from the 13 gauge steel cables he used for strings is amazing. In my opinion, the best guitarist who has yet lived.
Although I agree with some of your picks, you NEED to check out Bob Mould from Husker Du and Dennis "D" Boon from Minutemen. Absolutely yes to Andy Summers and Glenn Tilbrook. Most average guitarists would struggle to do the solos in "Pulling Muscles" or "Nail in My Heart." And the stacked 5ths in "Message in a Bottle" are no joke - most cover band guitarists play it wrong. Summers is really a Jazz guitarist. Carlos Cavazo... great player. BTW - Izzy is rockin' a Gibson 175 in that video, though you are right... he usually played Gretsch guitars... which is why Richard Fortus plays one to mimic him. You're kinda digging a little deep on some of these supporting cast dudes though... I mean, the guitar work on the Billy Squire records is great, but it's kinda stuff just about any decent guitarist can learn for any cover gig. Firehouse? Really? I think you've run out of ammo bro! lol
LOL - Yes, I had a hard time finding a decent Izzy clip - the cameras are always on everyone but him and knew he had the wrong guitar in that video but it was as close as I could come. The Firehouse and Andy Taylor clips were originally much better support for their inclusion, but YT blocked them both and I had to scramble for live clips.
"Gretch- strange guitar for an LA Rock Band". There were actually at least two scenes in LA in the 80s, really three. The hair thing is the first, and most people at least know about the early hardcore scene. It could be argued that a third one spun off from the second- the cowpunk/psychobilly/deathroots thing that the Gun Club started, where semis like Gretch were a thing. Those Paisley Underground bands, X, all those Cramps imitators, Lone Justice, etc were in to that atmospheric tone- Stradlin and McKagen definitely were aware of that stuff.
Love the guitar that glows in the dark! Nice! :-) EDIT: Ok, I was hallucinating. It isn't a Jackson... or is it? Looks like a 'Soloist'. EDIT 2: Ok, you're changing guitars on me. Why you do this to a fellow old dude?! LOL!

That unique form you use for "number two" maybe isn't great for potty talk, but I think its perfect for when you and the old lady are on the outs and haven't had "mommy and daddy need to have a talk" time in forever, but it's your birthday, and for years now both of you have gotten so frustrated with "talk time" that you've just taken to numbering instead of naming your positions, and after 5 solid minutes in "position number one" you collapse, and after a minute she looks at you with the contempt in her eyes you used to hate but now kind of turns you on especially because you know what she's about to say and then you're about to say (and you're pretty sure she does too) and she says to you with an exasperated sigh, (because she knows it's your birthday, she has a little too much weight on to want to get back out into the singles market, and because she knows you're going to say "position number two" which is her least favorite) "so what now," which is when you energetically pick yourself back up, look her dead in the eyes (so you can see her reaction both before and after you say it), and say, "number two" just exactly like you say it. Besides these lists, which are super entertaining, that's like the only application and context I can think to use that "number two" in.
Good list- soooo many!!!! Kai Hansen (Helloween) John Sykes (Whitesnake) Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche) Frank Aresti (Fates Warning) Reggie Wu (Heavens Edge) Tony Bruno Rey (Saraya) But #1 has to go to... Criss Oliva (Savatage)!!!!! Thumbs up if you agree;)

This is a great top 10 especially since you included Glen Tilbrook, Andy Summers and Andy Taylor. He, together with bass guitarist John Taylor were the real talent and musicians in Duran Duran. Andy Summers guitar parts in the Police were truly unique in his use of chorus and echo effects (like a modern day Hank Marvin and way ahead of U2’s ‘The Edge). Glen Tilbrooks’ solos especially in Another Nail In my Heart and Pulling Mussels from the Shell were so melodic and tasteful.
GearGasms As it is mine. I’ve just been watching Squeeze - Newcastle City Hall live in 1990. It’s just a fantastic gig and Pulling Mussels (2nd track) is incredible as is drummer Gilson Lavis. ( A good one for an underrated drummer post) ua-cam.com/video/T_ItrbZsZa4/v-deo.html
If you ever do a pt.2 Warren Cuccurullo, and one of my personal favorites - Bob Mould. He's not a virtuoso or a shredder, but man he can write catchy songs and create whatever sound he needed with his Flying V. I've listened to all of Husker Du, Sugar, and a number of his solo albums, he has a large body of work and his influence has been cited many times from other musicians. Sonic Youth and Husker Du were the top two Noise Bands from the 80s, and Husker Du led the way because of Mould's ability to write catchy riffs (personal bias). Carlos is great! I've listened to him in interviews and he's always humble, kind, just a sweet guy. Never got the respect he deserves and I never understood why. I like the exposure your videos give to musicians I blew off for whatever reason. For example, I never would have expected Night Ranger to be on the list, because all I ever heard was Sister Christian and hated it. It's like starting someone off with Cheap Trick's The Flame, you'll hate it and think they suck, meanwhile their first four albums are pure gold and go unnoticed. It's nice to be 50 and still discovering music.

Examples would be Glen Campbell ( Solo and as member of the wrecking crew featured on thousands of records without you even knowing) Steve Lukather ( Again as guitarist for Toto and session work for 1000"s including Steely Dan, Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie)
Brad Gillis filled in for Randy Rhoads on the tour ozzy had scheduled. That live album Speak of the devil is a very good live album. I thought fairies wears boots was excellent. Brad's playing was sweet compared to what he did in his later stuff in Nightranger.

Personally the two most under-rated guitarists are Ralph McTell and George Tomsco.
In 2011 Jose Feliciano was asked who he thought are the best guitarists today. He said the only guitarist he could think of is Tommy Emanuel.
There hasn't been any great guitarist in the last 40 years.
Cool! Thank you. I would like to see a review of the Boss Katana Amp. Also, have you ever tried the Headrush Pedalboard?
Man...Vito Bratta from White Lion is probably one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, that guy was so different of the other players from the 80's, melodic solos with lots of notes sometimes but without many notes sometimes, but always incredible!
He's on another list - here's a whole playlist of them! Thanks for having such great taste! I hope you'll hang out and subscribe! Cheers- alan!

Steve Clark ain’t crap compared to Criss Olivia ! Hands down the most overlooked player ever
Brad Gillis also played for Ozzy on the "speak of the devil" tour after Randy's passing. I love his take on some of the Sabbath Tunes like Paranoid.

Steve Howe🙂

I think Adrian Vandenberg should have made this list.
I made a listing using viewer picks - I may have to do another one! thanks for stopping by!
Dave Murray of Maiden's is very underrated. All credit usually goes to Adrian Smith
Agreed!

The bass player, Perry Richardson for Firehouse, currently with Stryper, is from our little town of Conway, SC. Firehouse was an awesome band, and people around here loved them. Similar story with Eric Brittingham thr bass player in Cinderella is from Salisbury Md. very cool!
@@GearGasms Bernie Torme, not Marsden! :)
Brad Gillis was absolutely great on 'Speak of the Devil' album or that short time he was with Ozzy.

I don't get the modern love for Lukather. No one really listened to Toto or him back in the day.

I don't mind Motley, I grew up listening to them, mostly like because I have memories from some of the songs in my younger yrs

In my opinion, the most talented guitarist ever played most of his time in the 80s, and since he isn't usually considered as such, I put him on this list. The best I have heard is he has been considered the best blues player ever. Stevie Ray Vaughan played the blues, but he could have played any genre and played it like he owned it. The guitar was an extension of Stevie, and the amount of action he could get from the 13 gauge steel cables he used for strings is amazing. In my opinion, the best guitarist who has yet lived.
I just now saw this comment for some reason!
Although I agree with some of your picks, you NEED to check out Bob Mould from Husker Du and Dennis "D" Boon from Minutemen. They are different from hair metal bands, but those guys have influenced so many people and don't get the recognition they deserve. Check out all of their albums to get a glimpse at their progress. It's amazing.

The Police song "Walking On The Moon", all shiny, sparkling guitar over it. :)
Firehouse? Really? I think you've run out of ammo bro! lol
Bill Leverty is a monster player to put it mildly
Listen to this "music" and particularly the guitar solo.
Bill Leverty of Firehouse is a phenomenal player.
ua-cam.com/video/byq2K2IYMlI/v-deo.html
LOL - Yes, I had a hard time finding a decent Izzy clip - the cameras are always on everyone but him and knew he had the wrong guitar in that video but it was as close as I could come. The Firehouse and Andy Taylor clips were originally much better support for their inclusion, but YT blocked them both and I had to scramble for live clips.
Yeah YT copyright police nixed my original Leverty and Andy Taylor clips. Bastards!
Great point and I forget that whole scene was LA ams ar the same time. Lone Justice was dark a little spooky and lovely all at the same time
@@GearGasms You see 1000 articles about NYC/CBGB's for every sentence about LA '77-'90, but there really was a diverse, cool scene.
LOL!
Lol the changing guitars was like my Easter egg for this shot! Would love if you’d subscribe if not already! Thanks!
Hi Alan, nice video it is always interesting to show the young people who were this unsung herores. However I hope you will do another 80s underrated since you still didn't mention Pat Thrall and Frank Marino amongst others. As for American Bandstand they also featured Van Halen ( a superb lyp sync video : ) and Def Leppard. Cheers.
I must have missed those two episodes - I'll have to look for them. Rare to see a real rock band on AB - thanks Jorge!
Richie Sambora is very very underrated
I agree Knuddo - love his early solos especially! Please subscribe if not already! He made my Bad Rock wives list lol

Brilliant List!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Jesse! I hope you’ll subscribe if not already!
These lists are fun and I always learn the names of guitarists where I have heard their songs, but didn’t know them. I was glad to see Carlos Cavazo on this list. Others have said this but I will say it too: Steve Stevens belongs on this list !!!
Yeah I’ll have to do a viewers choice version of this video! Thanks Bryan!
🔊🔊🎸Rex Carroll "Shredder Fretter" of WHITECROSS🔊🔊🎵🎶.
Check out Guitar solo on Nagasaki 1987. Saw them in 1990 at Fort Wayne Vineyard, fabulous show amazing solo's🔊🎸🎶!!
Gotta love the restraint at the end fatso lol ⚡️nice job

Ok but you have to make a video and lose your cookies while eloquently discussing a guitar topic that would upset like why strats suck for metal
You know who is underated pete lesperance from harem scarem no one ever mentions so sad and even chris oliva from savatage
Lots of people said Criss and I agree but I’ve never heard of Pete. I’ll have to check it out! Would love to have you subscribe if not already!
Wow same opinion.. that guy is a monster in his time..
@@GearGasms Pete Lesperance is amazing check out his playing in the songs "No justice " ," Mandy", "Had Enough" from his band Harem Scarem , his style is very influenced by Nuno and Vai.
Interesting list. I'm not so sure Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis were underrated but I get it. They graced multiple covers of GFTPM and Guitar Player (maybe guitar world as well). Same with Mick but I suppose it's not so much coverage as the fact that we was often disparaged by many for his technical ability. Dunno, I can recall plenty of his riffs and am having a tough time remembering one from the Great Kat lol!! Harry Cody from Shotgun Messiah would be one of my pics, ferocious player but the band fell short in many ways so he didn't break into the big time, Harry could flat out play!

What do you think of Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, Andy Larocque, Criss Oliva, Jeff Waters, George Lynch, Warren Demartini, Matthias Jabs, Steve Stevens, Steve Rothery, Dave Meniketti, Vito Bratta, Chris Poland, or Wolf Hoffmann?
Vito is on my first top ten list!
Mick chased Donna and Emi the entire Girls Girls Girls Tour, Most of the band would do groupies but Mick stayed within the band girls. Donna wouldn't do Mick but Emi appeared to. I was there, were you? Steve Morse deserves some love here.
Steve did an interview with me on my radio show. The interview is on my channel
Decent list. There’s a few I would’ve added and a few I would’ve dropped but I was really happy to see Carlos at #1! I really idolized him back in the day and always thought it was a shame that QR disappeared as fast as they appeared. They were a great band.
🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is epic! Lol

Lol
Pete Willis original guitarist of Def Leppard is underrated as well
Amen brother!

LOL - I knew you'd like that one!

I remember the Bandstand appearance by Night Ranger. The 2nd song was "Sing Me Away." Another great solo by Jeff Watson.
More great players. Really enjoying this "mini-series."
thanks EC - yes you are right!
I agree with you Carlos Cavazo is great and #1 on this list, you can also add up Jake E. Lee, C.C DeVille and Steve Steven on this list for me.😎
Many are on another list - here's a whole playlist of them! Thanks for having such great taste! I hope you'll hang out and subscribe! Cheers- alan!
Did Shawn Lane make it on any of these lists? Allan Holdsworth? I understand that these lists are exclusive to rock music and & I know these guys are considered fusion players, but they both made considerable contributions to rock music. They are easily two of the greatest guitar players to have ever lived.
Yeah I don’t know enough about fusion to make an informed assessment
This is a cool episode!
Glad you enjoyed it! It would be awesome if you'd subscribe if not already and help tell folks about GearGasms. It's small but growing fast!
Hey you ever tried any of the Boss Katana amps? If so, what do you think?
Believe it or not I just got one and shot my first look/unbox video but it won't be out for a few weeks. So far so good but I literally only played it during the video because I've been so busy
@@GearGasms Okay thank you! I can't wait to see the video. I have a question, sorry for the many questions, but do you own an Gibson SG? I plan on buying one, but I can't decide whether to get an SG Junior, SG Standard or the SG '61 Reissue. Like you I play a lot of Classic Hard rock. Also, the SGs that I tried in the past seem to out of tune a lot.
I had one in the early 80s and it was like the 61 Reissue so that’s the one I like. That Gibson headstock design on this, the ES and the LPs cause some tuning issues but they can be overcome. Let me know what you get!
@@GearGasms Ok, I will, thank so much for your feedback! Please let me when will the Katana will come out. I am also looking at a very curious looking portable device called the BOSS Pocket GT. Seems like a cool device for practicing, see video: Seems interesting..

🔊🎶Adrian Vandenberg lead master guitarist of Vandenberg and later Whitesnake. Saw them in 1981 they opened up for Ozzy Osbourne with a blistering set. Grand Musicianship 🔊🎵
Adrian Vandenberg is a very melodic guitar player. And his vibrato is second to none. # Mindblowing leadguitar on the albums of Vandenberg.
@klaasmeesters8509 he’s great!
What is your opinion on Bruce Kulick of Kiss/Grand Funk Railroad/ Meatloaf band
He’s good
This is a great top 10 especially since you included Glen Tilbrook, Andy Summers and Andy Taylor.
Pulling Mussels is one of my all tine faves!
GearGasms As it is mine. I’ve just been watching Squeeze - Newcastle City Hall live in 1990. It’s just a fantastic gig and Pulling Mussels (2nd track) is incredible as is drummer Gilson Lavis. ( A good one for an underrated drummer post)

Thanks for the encouragement Dave! You have great taste lol!
Good call on Warren cucarullo
-Michael Lee Firkins (Sharpnel records guy)
-Alan Murphy (UK session player , Kate Bush , Go West , Level 42)
-Carlos Rios ( Chick Corea , Gino Vanelli , Session cat)

Love reading these lists and always find they leave out some of the most important and influential guitarist during this period... Examples would be Glen Campbell ( Solo and as member of the wrecking crew featured on thousands of records without you even knowing) Steve Lukather ( Again as guitarist for Toto and session work for 1000"s including Steely Dan, Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie)
Great choices!🎸
Brad Gillis filled in for Randy Rhoads on the tour ozzy had scheduled. That live album Speak of the devil is a very good live album. I thought fairies wears boots was excellent. Brad's playing was sweet compared to what he did in his later stuff in Nightranger.
