- Infinity is an elusive concept that can often be difficult to comprehend. In order to better define what infinity actually is, we brought in Eugenia Cheng, a mathematician and the author of "Beyond Infinity."

Infinite is what happens when 8 gets drunk
Marcus M Does it fall over left or right I wonder...
I like your definition better.
Marcus M and falls down on its side
Or 0.
Marcus M Your going to Harvard
this left me more confused
SaraK ever use a mirror to reflect another mirror and all u see is mirrors in mirrors
Fat Glo wow that's a correct definition for infinity that you gave more accurate than that pimple lady
there should be only 360 reflections I think
NO VIDEO NO SUBSCRIBER it's a mole 😂😂
NO VIDEO NO SUBSCRIBER and I would use Asian lady 😂😂
There is an infinite amount of numbers between the number 0 and 1.
shit shit fucked me up
persimmon93 wtf
And an even higher amount in 0 to 2
*are
And is in between the number 0 and 0
How my maths teacher explained infinity:
Imagine standing Infront of a mirror, you hold up another mirror and look at the image of the mirror you held up. Within the image you see another of the same thing. This technically goes on forever.
The technically will exist through a logic thought pattern but in truth I think the number will not be the number if it goes on certain level.
It doesn't because every reflexion, some photons are absorbed. It gets fuzzier and fuzzier.
Theoretically, the magnitude of light on every return turns out to not be infinitely divisible in the physical world, but mathematically you can demonstrate infinity this way. It will ultimately be inaccurate until the equation takes into account a modelling of the physics of light. Once you include true feedback behaviors from physical systems, there is a termination point.
infinity is not what you think, it is a frozen state of what we call time.
I wish she had talked about those paradoxes instead of her handbags. This would have been infinitely more informative.
She wants to sell us her book. 😑😑
The paradoxes are difficult to explain.
This didn't make sense to me.
Sorry to ruin the 69 likes
Yeah
Not everything does , not everything has to
You need to use your infinity sense
It's not supposed to make any sense! Math is like a mysterious cult. If a Math teacher actually made it clear and understandable, he would be fired!
ever put a mirror in a mirror
Fat Glo Omg you're so right
Infinity in a nutshell
IRL it would eventualy decay due to the mirror not 100% reflextive but in a simulation. Thats another level
Exactly.. wanted to comment the same you caught my thoughts 👍
Most underrated comment
It should have pinned
I see this a lot in academia. Very smart people who can explain concepts to each other fairly simply but aren’t really that good at explaining things to regular people. This is just another example.
Well, better ask Thanos who have 'infinity' stones.
And after his explanation of infinity he will end with "I hope they remember you"
You're inevitably going to run out of bags and you started with 1. Not a very good explanation in my opinion.
Ben Kerry What. How does starting with 1 would mean she'll run out of bags. The supply of bags are infinite?
Siti Marhain it's already a bad description
Huh?
How can you run out of bags in an infinite world of bags.
You're opinion seems dumber 😅
"A mathematician explains infinity." I don't need anyone to explain it - infinity is infinity.
vK 3 1 RON So how do you know if there's nothing to explain about infinity? If nobody tells you if it came from your brain for granted?
If you didn't want an explanation, then you could have just not seen the video :p
Actually infinity isn't just infinity. Because there's a huge difference between countable and uncountable infinity.
Countably infinite is a concept in math. Look it up if you don't think I'm correct. It means you can order an infinite list, like 1,2,3,4..... The thing is, for example, you cannot list all the numbers in (0,1) in a list. No matter how you try, you won't be able to do it. (See Cantor's diagonilization argument too). That's the difference between countable and uncountable infinity.
If you take calc, you definitely need a rudimentary grasp of infinity beyond “infinity is infinity”. However, if you are not in a field that requires calc, you don’t need anyone to explain infinity. It truly won’t apply to your life
Horrible explanation and example
She is totally mad
Asian intelligence is infinitely different than everyone else’s was confirmed in this video 😂 that’s a compliment
For those confused about the bags. Think of it like boxes instead. Zero is equivalent to an empty box. One is a box with 1 thing in it. Two is a box with 2 things in it etc. Infinity is a special box that contains all other boxes.
So infinity is technically 0?
@@supayambaek but… isn’t 0 an empty box…?
I think infinity is the thing that will never end . Example: 123456789...etc basically uncountable ig.
I assume there's some technical mathematical reason why this definition is important. To a layman like me it seems pretty obvious that infinity would include everything.
A god has arisen his name is @janesrevelscomposer 😂😂
Einstein: Infinity is just a number that goes on
Lady: I like bags
*makes a video about bags
Can you explain black holes?
Lady in video: bags
lol
depends on the size of the bag. you can't fit certain amount of bags inside a big bag lol
What she is trying to say is that if you were to take your conventional number line and try to move forward, you won't find infinity somewhere along it rather it's the complete set of numbers on number line that infinity is.
It is not a number it's just the whole set of numbers.
Infiniti can be seen when you hold a mirror in front of another mirror. The reflecting images will create a pathway that has no ending. The pathway over a distance will start to curve and eventually run into itself an infinite amount of times. Kind of like the symbol for Infiniti. I learned this at the barbershop when I was 12 trying to watch tv in the mirrors.
Same!.. I've also observed this several times in a barber shop!.. Although, I'm actually thinking of using it for a different stuff..
What does she mean by paradoxes in infinity?
.
Paradoxes by definition are roadblocks which contradicts a certain sequence of logic by having 2 or more contradicting outcomes.
If we were to define infinity by the counting from 1 and saying it goes on forever, then we're setting ourselves up for a number we cannot perceive. This is why infinity is represented by a symbol than a number. The other issue with this is that infinity, depending on context, may or may not have an end or a beginning.
The set theory resolves this by avoiding a specific definition for infinity. This way, you can have multiple infinities either within each other or among each other. At least that's my theory anyway.
Minutephysics has a video demonstrating the problems with infinity in mathematics and how they go about dealing with it. It's very short so it doesn't go into detail. It's called "how to count infinity".
A paradox is two doctors.
PAIR OF DOCS
How can one have a beginning if there is no end
So if there is one bag with infinity amount of bags, does two bags equate to twice of infinity? Or is twice of infinity equals to infinity? Lol im confused
Not really for example there is infinite number between 0 and 1 but the 0 and 1 were inbetween a infinite amount of infinite number
This confused the shit out of me
Oh Really ! The other option would be great to see you there is anything you want to be honest I don't know what you think of the King of the King of the King of the most important things in life and work in progress and the Price of course the UK and Ireland and Wales with registered number is on my blog and the Price of course Thanks again for the use of the King of the King of the King of the King of the King of the King, but the mostly from the airport and also the option to change the way to get your hands free solution for your business and leisure facilities and services to clients throughout Europe.
What is infinity to the power of infinity?
infinity is still the answer
False, Jesus is always the answer
Meektitan 79 not defined .
Meektitan 79 How to count past infinity
Infinite infinity
it is explained by ramanujan a lot time before
madhab dwibedy 90 percentage of everything what is being discovered by scientists now a days was already discovered by ancient indians. But the link b/w them and us is missing. It has been destroyed by invaders and so on……………
first of all C. P. Ramanujam is not an ancient guy..first prepare ur script before argument
lol ramanujan is a recent guy
I am tamilian and we proud to be it.
joshua james understand one thing , hindu is not religion . I don't know who name that. It is full of solved mathematics and solved universe mysteries. If you don't understand ,stand behind us.
Indirect proof that the set IP(S) of subsets of a set S has a higher cardinality than S:
Let's assume both sets had the same cardinality, then there exists a bijective (and thus surjective) map f: S -> IP(S) such that for every P in lP(S) there is an x in S so that f(x) = P.
Now let's take a look at a special element C of lP(S) and subset of S.
This set C contains x if and only if f(x) doesn't contain x. (and thus doesn't contain x when f(x) does.)
By this construction, there can be no x so that f(x) = C.
q.e.d.
You fine bro?
This is what Infinity means because Thanos wants a Infinite descent life on the whole universe as well as the whole galaxy that's why he wants to collect 6 Infinity stones
For me infinity means 1/0
Manoj kumar that's not infinity, that's 0 because anything divided by 0 equates to 0. Even if you put 0/1, it would not mean infinity, it would become undefined. To get the answer to be infinity, you would have to divide it by infinity.
Jordan Chai I hope you're taking the piss out of us
Jordan Chai the hell. wrong. take yourself and tell me. how many nothing there is in you? an infinity so 1/0= infinite. O divided by any real number except itself give 0. 0/0=1/1=1
Sir, first of all you haven't even clarify what you're trying to tell/state to me. What do you specifically mean by nothing? Many things can become nothingness but you cannot create nothing. Second of all, before you tell me all of your statements, please take the time to think what you're about to say before even typing it. Anything that is divided by 0 becomes 0 (10/0 becomes 0), anything that 0 is divided by becomes undefined; meaning you cannot find the answer for it (0/22 becomes undefined because there is no appropriate answer for it). Infinity is a concept/statement. You only use it when you're unable to process or calcuate the result. So if anything that is divided by infinty becomes infinity itself. That's the basics of math. I'm not being arrogrant or anything, i'm just stating the facts /knowledge that i've learnt from others that they bestowed onto me. I'm not here to have an argument about math. I know my shit, if you think that i'm wrong then correct me with proper facts that you can back up (such as evidence) but if not, then please don't try.
opps i forgot to tag you btw ^
Infinity isn't a number, it's a statement. It is used when we can't explain or finding the result of some calculations that is hard to perform. That's probably the easiest way to explain what is infinity. It's used when we can't find the proper or exact answer to the math problem
people use infinity to replace aleph null, which nobody knows how to write.
How would a line with infinite gradient look like? (I’m stuck on my homework)
What do you mean by the normal straight forward way?
What?
I think we we're all looking for the Avengers War kind of "Infinity"
LMAO I LOVE THAT MOVIE
MAFPlayzYT same
my mind blows up
I can give you a visual example of Infinity. That which is
Infinite is not readily apparent, is not measurable as to location and momentum, has no mass.Take eight Mirrors about one foot square. Form an octagon with the reflective side to the inside. Place a dot on one of the mirrors and then look at the dot from the outside of the octagon. Finding just the right angle and a series of dots will appear on one of the mirrors, beginning with the first dot being larger than the rest. The series of dots will appear with each dot becoming smaller and smaller to the point that the dots are no longer visible, become Infinite.
Infinite is when you type cheat code hesoyam on gta san address over and over
What a joke (infinity joke) 😂😂😂
The fact is the Indian scientist Ramanujan told the world about infinity . Read his biography book or watch the Hollywood movie made upon him "The man who knew Infinity - Ramanujan" to really find out the fact behind discovery of infinity 😉😉
Is that the infinity stone thingy at da Avengerz?
I just can say infinity it's similar to without limit or unlimited isn't ? correct me if I'm wrong
Is there an explanation video for this video?
2018 is infinity year
because there will be Avengers Infinity War
If 2018 was infinity then 2020 must be something beyond infinity...
WRONG
Now I want to understand the meaning of explaination.
what is the paradox that would happen?
i watched many math videos, all people i watched are asians
I'll tell you what infinity means. if the bag contains 10 million bags and you don't know how many in the bag and couldn't count for some reason, then it's called infinity. this simply proves that human point of view is like an atom point of view trying to count 10 million bags in a bag. now I made your day with confusion, but think and you will feel it has a logic in it.
I get it... it's like Earth is finite for us but infinite for ants... it's relative
then how can we achive infinity in javascript by multiplying max value by 2 ie 1.7976931348623157e+308x2 so basically infinity is just a concept or a loop which our brain can't process
What will be the vlue of infinity divide by zero. . Give with reason
For example, A wheel being turned around and around forever makes an infinite revolution. But besides being stopped, It is not an infinite cycle anymore because it has already been ended once meaning to say it can be counted referring to how many revolution it made if you remembered it anyway. I'm not really that good at English but pls bare with my own answer and respect my own theory.
The easiest way to picture it is to picture this “ no matter how big the number is , its always closer to zero than infinity “. 👍
Isn't infinity just a way of saying a huge number or amount, per se, with no end or limit?
So is space and time a loop?
Is infinite the last number? If not, what is it
I bag your pardon but this is so confusing... why do bags have to contain bags? For recursivity reasons?
If so, why doesn't the 1-bag contain the zero bag, i.e. an open bag, instead of the black closed bag?
Something's off here.
So there's a bag with every number in existence in it and in those bags; the first bag is empty, the second bag has one bag inside and the next bag has 2 bags inside it and the next bag has 3 bags inside it and this carries on for every single number?
Area of Circle is πr^2
Then Make the Sign infinity To circle and as all Peoples know that π is endless so possibly Infity is = to π?
What are paradoxes pls reply
I can define infinity as a variable which is continuously increasing:
Let infinity be i
let S be the size of the entire universe
Let P be the size of the smallest particle that exists
applied notion of infinity is basically how many times can we fit the smallest particle inside the entire universe so it can be defined by this formula:
S/P= i
Like if you agree with this.
Everything has to stop at one point, but when it does, what's left after it?
The set she describes doesn't stop at one point 😭
Isn't infinity just the interval between two finites? i.e. The halfway point between 0 and 1 is 0.5. Keep dividing in half and you'll get 0.25, 0.125, 0.0625, 0.03125, ... never-ending. So infinity is just an interval, and an almost-anagram of "interval" is "eternal" with a leftover "v" and an "e" used in place of "i". So we can almost say that "infinity" is an "eternal evil" ...
Sometimes. If you look at tan(x) as x→π/2 (from below), it goes to infinity. This means that no matter what (real) number you pick, tan(x) will go bigger than it before it reaches tan(π/2)
The animator of the bag thing did it wrong. She explained that each bag has a bag inside of it so the largest bag has all the other bags in it then the next largest bag has all the others but one in it etc. not just generally lots of bags with some bags in each one
Without paradoxes? Why?
It's like inception? did I get it right?
So if infinity is endless then does infinity create endless versions of its self within its self?🤔
1:28
Black bag going up instead of in the bag: *IMMA JUST SWOOP-*
this video is a success because it got people who are interested to look elsewhere for real answers
We were lied to, that one bag at 1:27 is floating somewhere else
"some infinites are bigger than the other infinities," Hazel Grace Lancaster, The Fault In Our Stars. Eg, in the range of 1 to 2 there's 1.2, 1.23, 1.234 and so on which is an infinite. But of course, there's 1 to 3 or 1 to a million..

What bag?
Infinity in my point of view is a never ending thing or numbers like a time loop. in which case a time loop has no beginning and has no end but something else like Natural numbers (probably) has a beginning "1" but has no end.
But what about all the numbers between 0 and 1 for example? These numbers have an end, because they're never less than 0, or more than 1. In fact there are more numbers (a lot more!) between 0 and 1, than there are natural numbers.
Only Santa claus has an infinity bag
1/inf = 0? or not?
read again.
We are time dependent...
So it is impossible to define infinity
4 seconds into the video and already got the answer. Nice!
Wait! What was that it was more about bags not theory 🤔
explain the paradoxes
it's because a bag could also be referred to as baggage. Since the word baggage has origins that date around 1400-1450 one could presume that bags containing baggage are not only infinite but also immortal
Its an easy answer to me its an statement infinity like infinite or unlimited it doesnt have a end wich is not confusing because infinite consist of endless finite number infinity cant be measured in any way because its an statement that simething doesnt have a end in term of number
But its not really infinity is complicated but the thing that goes with it for example infite amount of possibility meaning anything can happen and that the universe is expanding infinitely wich talk for itself
infinity-the number 8 but it fell asleep
word "Bag" is now stuck on my head
instant regrets watching this bullshittery
Just by adjusting 8 causes paradoxes.
the best way to explain infinity is the infinity symbol it self.
I have an explanation, every thing around u is infinity,u can zoom into a thing and will never get the smallest thing or u may zoom out of a thing and yet there's no end
Actually a planck length is the smallest length you can divide space by. Reality has a lower bound on size before physics breaks down doesn't make any sense anymore. If you could divide space infinitely then nothing would be able to move and time would not exist. Thankfully the you can't divide space past a planck length so things do move and we have time! Yay!
I thought infinity was a number of something that never stops
ok but i wanna know I could be so stupid BUT HELP ME PLEASE!!! If we were to try to calculate earth's radius doesn't that mean the center of Earth is growing????
Infinity is not a number. It is a concept. A concept that we do not really grasp, but we act as if we do to be able to use it as an argument in mathematical proof.
You can use infinity (or should I say, infinities) as a number and even do arithmetic with it in a way that is satisfying. If you don't know it already, look into ordinal arithmetic or cardinal arithmetic. Numbers, like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc, can extend to infinity, but they split in their roles. Ordinal numbers (like omega, the infinity described in the video) describes the order type of a set. There is a theorem that says that every well ordered set is order isomorphic to exactly one ordinal. This property allows us to give each element of a set an ordinal, which is very satisfying. Cardinal numbers (like aleph null, also the same infinity described in the video) describes the size of a set. Every set is order isomorphic to exactly one ordinal, and so there is a least ordinal to which it has the same size (by the well-orderedness of the ordinals). These ordinals are the cardinals. You can look up how to do arithmetic with these numbers. A certain equation using cardinal arithmetic and the aleph numbers describes the continuum hypothesis, a question that was shown to be neither provable nor disprovable given the ZFC axioms.
Infinity is an event,it is something that happens. It is not something that you can touch.
How about you think of infinity like this....think of a number then add 1 to it....so every time you think a number it goes on increasing until you stop thinking...and that's infinity....
I wanted to know the answer but spaced out half way thru
It's like you open a door and see two different doors and both these doors have three doors each and so on... that's what I believe she meant
This video: What is infinity
Me and Buzz Lightyear: ⒾⓃⒻⒾⓃⒾⓉⓎ ⒶⓃⒹ ⒷⒺⓎⓄⓃⒹⒹⒹ!!!
Infinity means if you have 1 and add it to infinity still it would be infinity
Infinity means alot of number with a loop that looping & looping & looping until the Space time is parmenantly stop
i can explain it in only one word
forever
Well, this works only if one uses Louis Vuitton bags which do not wrinkle. They cost a bit more than your run-of-the-mil bags, but infinity is worth it, right!?
Infinity Is Not A Number But A Value Greater Than Numbers
I think Infinity is a point from where humans could not think
Place two mirrors opposite to each other this will create an infinite number of frames for an eye to capture
Went TOTALLY over my head
Forget numbers. Let's use a simple movie reference. Place your order with the takeaway operator. Finish your order; takeaway operator replies 'and then?' Repeat x infinity
Infinity equals no time signature.
