The minute I hear Tonic I start singing.. "if I could only see the way..." for me as a African American female getting into rock back then, The 90s was so amazing for me in music. I listened to everything and Tonic was definitely up there for me...love them music
I remember my boss recommending Tonic's first album to me. He was an older guy who was a drummer for The Tubes for a short stint. He said he wasn't into alternative rock much but he liked these guys. I bought the first album without even hearing it and loved their sound right away. I thought the melodies were great and the lyrics were heartfelt. I've been a fan ever since.
How can anyone be "Too influenced by 70s rock" ?.. Whatever gets your artistic juices flowing is what's right for that individual. I loved Tonic so whatever they liked and/or used worked for me 🤘🔥💜
I just recently got Tonic's 2nd album "Sugar". My god this band can write great songs. Although the song "You wanted more" was the single and video from this album, the song "Future says run" is one of the best most melodic songs I have ever heard in my live and I own around 1,000 cd's that I listen to all the time.
When i first showed my lil cousin (im 5 years older) future says run, his exact words were. "This shit could have come out TODAY and been a hit" will always remember that interaction because thats my sentiment forever with this band
Emerson Hart & Tonic are very active on social and they are SUCH good, kind guys. Emerson has a great bunch of solo stuff. Cool story: Emerson & Dan (bassist) kindly posed w/ my wife & I after a show a few years back for a couple pics, and even re-posed after I approached them again and said my wife mistakenly took about five 1-second **videos** on her phone instead of pics, since it was accidentally in video mode. Emerson laughed and said "no problem!" Class acts, these guys.
I was 12 when this track came out. I loved this track during my teen years and I loving it even more now as I get close to turning 40! The chorus is so sweet! So poetic! And I appreciate how clean the lyrics are!! I look forward to passing this track to my kids one day ❤❤❤❤❤
I was fortunate enough to meet a woman that was great friends with Emerson, Dan and Jeff..we got green room back stage passes when they played and headlined Maffey Theater in St Pete. Hung out at the hotel afterwards. Was best experience of my life.
Lemon parade and sugar albums never really left my cd wallet or playlists both on my phone now. Grew up listening to tonic still do. They use some fun tunings like dadgad too.
I would give ANYTHING to have just one hit single, these guys had a few! I’ve never understood the hate against one hit wonders, 99.999% of us will never have a song played on the radio or sung by strangers, so to accomplish something like that is absolutely amazing. Even with just one hit song, it will still be around decades after we’re all gone and tracks like that live forever. There will still be folks two hundred years from now that will know the words to “If you could only see,” but there will be no one left on Earth at that time remembering any of us. So yeah, to write a song that will live forever is an accomplishment to envy and be proud of... not to mention these guys get to live comfortably off the residuals for the rest of their lives! On a side note, I met a guy who wrote a hit Christian song (just one song!) and he lived in a huge house with nice cars and never worked a day again. So I’m fairly sure Tonic is good to go and any of us would trade places with them in a heartbeat.
Christian music is a great racket to be involved in. There is an army of sleeve-tattooed youth pastors out there who consciously want to push alternatives to real music. Lots of real talent out there, but they'll subsidize the charisma and "it factor" for you. Also, being famous when you're dead feels the exact same as being not famous when you're dead.
I've always thought 1-hit wonders had it made- make a million bucks and your name in a book somewhere, and no more touring or stress. Get out and have cash in the bank. Smart if you ask me.
UMG and the Communications Act of 1996 pretty much suffocated a lot of the business that everyone assumes when they think of "rock and roll". Those drops in Tonic's album sales are too steep to explain any other way; they and a lot of other bands were just dumped off a cliff by the massive conglomerates that took over everything.
Jeff Russo did the music for "Legion," "Fargo," and recently "Star Trek Discovery" and "Picard." The official Star Trek Podcast, "The Pod Collective" has a great interview with Jeff Russo. Obviously heavy on his part in recent Star Trek shows, but it does hit on Jeff's full career.
Great video, man. I always wondered what happened to Tonic. It's great to hear that they got back together again and are currently still recording. It sounds like they got caught under the wheels of mega-giant UMG's corporate b.s. . At least they garnered 2 Grammy Nominations for their unappreciated 3rd album (unheard by me). I first became aware of Tonic in late-1999 in the Puget Sound region when KZOK-FM played the *Live At Bob's Garage* version of "Open Up Your Eyes." This version - MUCH louder, tighter, stronger and heavier than the studio version - blew me away at first listen. Absolutely love that song - specifically that version of it - to this day. I love "If You Could Only See" just as much. I just find their music being the perfect combination of light and heavy. I also find their songs to be refreshingly honest. I remember watching the video for "You Wanted More" which came as a bonus feature on the *American Pie* DVD. I think I might have heard that song a 2nd time, if anything. Tonic is a band that should have received much more popularity than what they had. Thanks for reminding me that I do need to check-out more of their stuff other than the 2 songs I know well by them. 👍🏻
I always enjoyed this band!!!!!!! I have always loved their type of music!!!!!!!!! You have different feelings in your life and you don’t always want to feel like you suck and listen to harder driven music and hate life!!!?? And then at the end you’d feel better about yourself and feel like you just had the best counseling session!!!? Lol God bless ya all today Shalom
Tonic: "We don't think in terms of alternative rock or guitar rock... Or how many CDs can we sell." For the most part, the video goes on to describe the band's album sales. But yeah, for me Tonic still rules! Their songs are a staple in my 90s alternative rock Spotify playlist.
Thanks for this!! I had been wondering whatever happened to these guys. I'm shocked to find out that they didn't name themselves after tonic water! Lol, i always figured that was the origin of their band name! Lemon Parade is a classic album from my generation, & so is Sugar, in my opinion.
Thank you for doing a story on this band. Severely underrated at the time and don't really get the respect now. All the band members are monster musicians. My sons have grown up with their music and there's a Tonic gig happening close to us they are all about it. Got to see them at a local bar and mainstay in LA. Molly Malones, for the 20th Anniversary of Sugar and the band if ON POINT.
Much of the record label mentality during the 90s is basically summed up like this: Find a new band and sign them. Have them release a debut LP. Make hits of two or three singles. Then just throw the band away.

It was one of those radio bands. They are pretty good. The drummer Kevin Shepard is Tom Selleck's adopted son. Tom was divorced from his mother, they were married for 10 years.
I was hooked the first time I heard "Open Up Your Eyes" on the radio. It was one of those " Who are THESE guys?!!!?" moments. I remember it happening two other times, that I can think of: The first time I heard "Talk Dirty To Me" on the radio(when it was current), and first hearing "Killing In The Name" in a club(again, being current). Tonic was the last time I remember this happening. Not saying these were the only 3 instances of this happening, but I can't remember any other times.
Another great video! I would love to see one on one of my favorites bands American Football. They have a strong cult following and oddly released two albums almost two decades after their first and for a long time, only release.
I would very much love to see you do a video on whatever happened to the band "Machines of Loving Grace" the most well-known song is probably "butterfly wings" from their second album "concentration" they had a awesome song (one of my favorites actually) off The Crow soundtrack called "Golgotha tenement Blues" I always wanted to find out what happened to them and what they're doing now?
Now there's a blast from the past. I saw Machines of Loving Grace at Club DV8 in Salt Lake City. They only played half a set and left the stage to a chorus of boos.

I always love these guys. Tonic is just a great band, but it always felt their record label didn't always feel the same way. By the time their third album came out, Hart and Russo could only tour as an acoustic duo since the label wouldn't help fund a full band tour. I think they just got caught up in a record biz that was consolidating, merging and dealing with Napster. Their albums were always great and they had a loyal fanbase, but the label never saw them as a priority. During the whole boy band craze it felt to as if all that mattered to the labels were those pop groups that were selling a gazillion copies of their albums and no 90's holdover band could compete with N'Sync selling four million copies in a week.
I had their two big albums. They were catchy. They had a song called "Waltz With Me," though, which was in 4/4 time all the way through. It felt oddly un-self aware.
Tonic is a critically underrated band. The acoustic lemon parade album is amazing.
Twenty years later covering your own material isn’t evidence of being critically underrated. But the original album is good.

Sugar is an awesome album. Still one of my favorites today
Tonic is one of the bands that made 90's sound.
I had their two big albums. They were catchy. They had a song called "Waltz With Me," though, which was in 4/4 time all the way through. It felt oddly un-self aware.
I'd love to see a series on the most iconic rock and roll music videos...just an idea
