Never again will we see an aircraft that looks and sounds so beautiful
Rest in peace Mark, Spitfire was flown beautifully,
Mark and Ray Hanna . Two of the very best of the good guys . May they rest in peace, but thank goodness we have these wonderful videos of them both. Respect
Best footage, seriously amazing. When you type "Spitfire" this is what you want to see! Thankyou so much, that was so good,
One of the most beautiful aircraft every built. Spitfires are a case of "if it looks right, it is right."
gotta love the sound of the Merlin engine!
sweet video :)
I have spent a year or two searching UA-cam watching Spitfire videos, this is without doubt the best I have come across yet, I only wish it had not taken so long to find. Simply beautiful…
A marvelous aircraft flown by a great pilot. Mark Hanna will be greatly missed.
nothing more enjoyable than gazing at a Spitfire over head. Its got to be the best sight and sound ever, and I am not even old enough to remember them in wwii.
We had one fly over Plymouth this evening in a memorial flight, what a sight !!
Mark Hanna contributed so much to the world of vintage aircraft. A former RAF fast jest pilot, his calling came at an air diplay in Spain in 1999 when he crashed in a vintage fighter and died from his injuries.
It is well worth taking the trouble to read up on his acheivements and, to anyone who knows anything about the old aircraft we enjoy watching today, his name is remembered with much respect.
What a beauty!!! I love the Spitfire!!
Sad to lose a gentleman who was keeping the memory of many good men alive. Those young men also payed the ultimate price but saved us from evil. R.I.P Mark, your kind are sorely missed these days.
Love to go up in one of these...Every time you see a Spitfire fly, you cant help but think of those brave pilots of WW2 who gave there all...
Before you get too carried away tasman don't forget that the a,b or c as in mk Vb or mk IIa refers to the gun arrangement. An 'a' wing had four Browning .303 machine guns in each wing, the 'b' wing had a 20mm cannon and 2 .303's in each wing. The ability to turn inside an enemy to maintain a deflection shot is legendary but don't forget that various mk's had specific abilities to enable the engagement of various aircraft at various heights.
Beautiful sound of the engine, i love that sound.
There's something about the sound of a merlin roaring over head which always sends a tingle up my spine. I spent alot of time at air shows like the IAT at RAF Fairford as a child and my favourite part was when the spit, hurricane and the lancaster came over. It's a memory that will always stay with me (that and the one of the two mig 29's crashing)
Nice work, the Spitfire is one of my favorites!
A video that should stir the nation!!!
Really enjoyed it. RIP Mark Hanna.
I just love that screaming roar coming from that beasty rolls royce merlin!
I saw Ray perform many many times in his beloved spitfire and in some other planes he had in his collection at Duxford, I had spoken to him too. Remember he didn't pass on in a flying accident - he was too good for that to happen. Natural causes got him. Sad really skills like that were plentiful in the war, sadly lacking now but he had bucket loads. RIP Ray and thanks for the memories
Hi are you The Freddie Laker of Laker Airways? If so you and my family member Pilot Geoff Gordine were great friends in the RAF. Freddie ask Geoff to fly with Freddie’s Airline before it even started.
If you are not the same Freddie Laker I do apologise.
Happy new year to you.
JB. Surrey. UK.
Thanks very much for explaining that the hurricane and spitfire were designed independently and about the same time. Much appreciated.
thank you spitfire, u were there when we really needed u
soooooo glad there is'nt any music over this vid, those 12 pots sound fantastic
One of the symbols of Britain. That Merlin engine is just indescribably magnificent to listen to.
Mr Munky
I LOVE THE SOUND OF ITS ENGINE!
Gorgeous airplane and a truly Sierra Hotel pilot. Godspeed, Mr Hanna.
Im a german but i love the sound of this great piece of a english plane !: )
Mark Hanna certainly knew how to display a spit!!
Having just read Geoffrey Wellum "First Light" it will truly bring you closer to this magnificent aircraft and those incredible pilots........... a fine book for those fine pilots
george fryer blewbury england
@munghi It was lucky. Well spotted Mum! You need to get to an airshow - there's nothing like the sight and sound of a Spitfire in the air. I've seen quite a few over the years. I was lucky enough to see a Mosquito in flight back in the early 80's. Wonderful.
What a fabulous video! The sound gave me goosebumps! Thanks!
Theres nothing like the sound of a spitfire on full chat.......Fantastic.
I don't think a more graceful, beautiful aircraft has ever adorned the sky. Not the clipper, not the connie, not the mustang...
This is it. This was the apex of curvilinear sexiness in wings.
He flies like in a simulator where it doesnt matter if he crash. Simply amazing
RIP Mark Hanna !!!
Wonderful airplane !!
I just love how alive this aircraft looks.
that dam thing is so intimidating when its flying low like that. beautiful machine. beautiful flying. RIP
I saw Ray Hanna beat up Biggin Hill in this aircraft once, it was spectacular and graceful at the same time. He was such a fine pilot.
Glorious, elegant, beautiful machine.
I read a write-up he did...he'd never flown a Spit, but was very experienced in virtually any other type of aircraft--had flown all the US prop models, and a lot of jets. He said it flew as well, if not better than the best general aviation aircaft he'd ever flown, and had no vices in the air whatsoever, much lighter on the controls than he expected. He said it was "instant seduction".
I would like to say, Mark Hanna was 1 of a few, for those that new Mark i'm sure would agree.
We lost an exallent warbird flyer, But he now fly's with a differant set of wing's. thanks for sharing
awsome video, awsome sound, awsome fighter. god bless all who flew her! and ditto 'DILightning'
This sure is the best spitfire vid on UA-cam. Also the sound is awesome!
Yes, fantastic.
The sound is very evocative.
You here them come over here sometimes for the Shrewbury flower show.
YOu can tell them instantly.
Such a glorious beautiful sound!
a vid with a spit is always worth to look at....
i like all old prop planes....greetings from germany
no matter what aircraft video I watch - there is nothing compared to those WW2 vintage warbirds.
I built them in 1/72 when I was 8, and looking at them still gives me goose-bumps (the positive kind)
i had the great pleasure of being invited by RAY HANNA to help push this plane out of it's hanger along with my father & be the only 2 people to watch as he did a very similar display to this one by his son. WOW, one of the greatest experiences of my life.
Just had a tear roll down my face!
One of the best sounding machines of all time. No Doubt
i always find the sound of a spitfire merlin engine beautiful, but there is something very haunting about it too-it is the ICONIC aircraft, which perhaps/probably, changed the course of world history in its time as a ww2 fighter
-beautifully flown Mark
-RIP
The hair's on the back of my neck stand up every time I watch any video on youtube of the Spitfire.... It was made by the common man and woman, to be flown by young men who had barely left school. This must be the Greatest thing ever created by man You can keep your fancy Cars and your fancy Architecture, your Paintings from all over the World...... You'll never be anywhere near it!
A beautiful aircraft with a beautiful sound.
the sound of that merlin rolls royce engine takes your breath away.......fantastic
What this video is lacking is an ending where the Spit is back on the ground, and a victorious pilot with a pencil-mustache and a hyphenated surname leaps from the cockpit and says "I say, bad day for Jerry, what."
Dude this has a music all of its own - The Spitfire. Who needs music?!
This account from a brave old soldier with whom I was privileged to be a friend; Squadron Leader Keith J. MacDonald, now late, of RNZAF 485 Squadron: The Spitfire truly came of age with the advent of the Merlin 60 Series engines equipped with a 2 stage 2 speed supercharger. Still beautifully responsive and feather light on all the controls, the Spitfire Mk IX and subsequent Merlin 60 powered types proved to be a nightmare for the Hun interceptor, whether he was airborne in the Bf109 or the Fw190
Clipped spits were used for higher altitude. My dad who was in the RAF told me that in a dive it was the Spitfire that had 1st broken the sound barrier .The elliptical wings also enabled the spitfire to do a tighter flat flight turn which the Me109 could not do .The wings on the Spit I think were designed on the seagulls wings might be wrong on this point .
Absolutely superb!
Last year I was lucky enough to purchase at a boot sale a filthy picture of a Sopitfire spotted by my Mum. I saw it was an oil painting under the layers of filth and dust. I was amazed when the seller asked £3!. After a careful cleaning it's on my wall. It bears the registration MH434. This was stationed at Hornchurch for most of it's WW2 service. My Mum and grandparents lived nearby during the war. I was born in Hornchurch and live not far away now. Lucky find or what?!
Living legend...
No, the Spitfire and Hurricane were designed at almost the same time. The Hurricane was designed by Sidney Camm at Hawker and the Spitfire by R.J.Mitchell at Supermarine. The Hurricane had its origins in the Fury biplane, but the Spit was an original design.
Both brilliant planes.
sweet R.I.P. Mark
It makes me wanna play IL-2 over and over again.
That guy could really fly... balls of steel flying that low across Duxford on what looked like a gusty day, in a priceless aircraft... i'm sure if the Spitfire could speak though it would have been laughing
love this vid....that merlin never gets old
Immer wieder supergeil:Der Sound des Merlin-Motors!
yes i was only jokin. spits a fine plane.
its allways in my heart.
TEZZ
Goosebumps ...... yes I know the Yanks had the P-51 (thanks to the Brit Merlin) but there truly is nothing that can compare to the beauty and sound of the Spitfire. Goosebumps!!!!!!
Best Spit-Clip ever...
Nothing like the sound of a beautiful RR Merlin !!
That and the Hurricane saved England! What a piece of art!
Absolutely awsome in every way
beautiful
Love this plane.. - most beautyfull ever..!!
nacre99 the Lanc' you refer to is "Just Jane" at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire. They run and taxi it during the summer months.
MH434 is also a famous film star and starred in the films below:-
The Longest Day
The Battle of Britain
A Bridge Too Far
Hope & Glory
Piece of Cake
A Perfect Hero
Hercule Poirot's Casebook
Hanging Around
Over Here
No Bananas
Land Girls
Dark Blue World
@ScottishCaledonian ... yes, once the Mustang was fitted with the RR Merlin engine it was transformed into a fantastic fighter, so too was the Focke-Wulf 190 a terrific fighter. These aircraft and the Zero were much younger designs than the Spitfire which first flew in 1936 and entered service in 1938, essentially a pre-war aircraft, that is a testimony to its great and innovative original design that it managed to be continually developed to match the newer aircraft throughout the war.
Fantastic video. The spitfire is my favourite WWII plane. But always wondered if the spitfire is really a Hawker Fury Mk 3. This is because the hurricane is really a hawker fury Mk 2. So the spitfire is actually a refined or developed-on version of the hurricane (with improved shape, body material, wing and engine).
amazing
Most wonderfully aerobatic fighter aircraft ever made!
wonderful
Ray Hanna was a pure legend R.I.P.
Once you a hear a Merlin in real life, you are never the same. Mark Hanna, a man who lived life to the fullest.
Must have been an awsome sight to see it coming at you and literally spitting fire.
I like this sound, fantastic (watch your six!).
I heard about this and hope to see them all fly together.
14 stuka's pilots disliked this vid
There is no finer sound. The sound of a Merlin never fails to bring a lump to the throat.
Yes !!! :)
@MythBusterUK
How anybody irrelevant of their views on machines of war, could not look at this plane and see its beauty escapes me. The sound alone gives me a lump in the throat. Lest not we forget the fabulous pilots.
like marks steady control as he does low fly bys great work...love to fly a spitfire
My favorite aircraft by far!
my grandad flew one of these in the RAF :)
The Spitfire is a true monocoque. The Hurricane a monoplane development of Hawkers tried, trusted, and quicker to make semi monocoque designs such as the biplane Demon. The structure aft of the cabin is metal tube and wooden formers covered by fabric. The Spitfire is an all metal monocoque. The Hurri was obsolete by the mid 1940s.The Spitfires last operational flight was in 1952.Good going for an aircraft designed in 1936.Extremely good going for a single seat fighter aircraft.
@noonsight2010 Quality find .The only Spitfire I have seen up close hangs from the roof of the Art Gallery in Glasgow.
@Tigh123 The P51-B was produced primarily for export to Britain. The British specified the Allison engines which did not perform well at high altitude. Thus the aicraft was used more for ground attack than as a fighter. British engineers specified the shortened fuselage, teardrop canopy, Merlin engine etc which resulted in the P51-D the "classic" Mustang, which was essentially a new British designed aircraft. The Air Cobra was so poor the RAF flew one sortie and withdrew them.
Yep the Clipped wing spitfire was the only piston driven plane to hit the sound barrier when in a dive.
This is a real machine, the sound of the engine.......is just music
The noise makes the Hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
