Back in 1969, this wasn’t considered country & western music. It was pop. Unlike today where C&W is in very large part rock and role of the 60’s and 70’s. Mac Davis isn’t in the hall either.
My parents separated in 1980, my father to moved to Houston from South Dakota when I was eight years old. He left his records home and Bobby Goldsbor's Greatest Hits was one of them. Those records were about the only connection I could find with my father and I remember playing this song, along with many other sad songs over and over. I knew that I was Johnny. I have listened to other versions of this song but they just don't stir me the same way this one does. It's nice seeing it performed.
Nobody can sing this song like Bobby Golddboro!!! Precious memories of my youth in the 60s. There will NEVER be times and singers like these AGAIN!! NEVER EVER!!
We saw him in the 70s in his only performance in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the Vapers night club. One night only, my wife got her picture with him after the show. Was a wonderful performance by him.
On this day in 1969 {April 23rd} Vicki Carr performed "With Pen In Hand" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'... One month later on May 3rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #35 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... Two other versions have charted; Billy Vera {#43 in 1968} and Bobby Goldsboro {#94 in 1972, and he composed the song}... May God bless Mr. Campbell...
All 'young men' who have children should listen to this song before taking their foolish pride in their hands and not keeping his young protege's secure and happy ! Sure it takes work & focus, losing some battles, refusing to hold grudges and most importantly never putting an eye on another woman.
I never understood Bobby's mucic growing up but I knew it was very important THANK GOODNESS I did! How such a young man Jane have a grip on saddness...
I hate to be one of those people to come to another artist's video and be like "SO AND SO DID IT BETTER!". But, honestly and truly, to hear to original version and then what Aretha Franklin did with song is unreal.
Once had a bitter argument with my wife and it was so likely we are to depart, we saw our son crying and we swalloed our principles just for our son, until now we are united live harmoniously and easily patch our contrasting view just because of family. So to those who are planning to marry, think of your children future emotional stability
It is from a French TV Show (filmed at the Midem Festival, in Cannes). The background vocalists, with a very specific sound, are my friends Danielle Licari ("Concerto pour une voix"), Anne Germain & Jackye Castan. In the same show, Bobby sings also "Too late", "Honey" and "The Straight life"
Last Friday, a friend brought me a ton of 10, 12 and 16 inch 78 rpms. Most of them were in dirty, moldy, bug invested book albums - get the picture? In there, however, were six copies of Linda Plowman's version of this Goldsboro classic,, made in 1970 when she was just 13. Go figure. Say, did you ever hear Jerry Wells version of "See the Funny Little Clown?" It came out in 1964 too. How do I know? Because the Squires (on the Gee Label) recorded it with yours truly singing lead on the Twin Hits label. Hey, don't arrest me! I got $10 for singing lead while the other fellas got $5 each, and we had to buy the record for 20 cents.
Its interesting how the lyrics were changed depending on the singer gender and their supposed role in their children lives (mother makes her daughter's hair, a father teaches his son to fish).
I totally agree and collected all their recordings which are still on my shelf. I managed to see John Denver in concert when he visited the UK but never saw a concert advertised by Bobby and sadly haven`t seen him live. Linda
My wife was murdered while I was in Vietnam in 1970. She was killed by her lover. I was left with a three year old son to raise. Not a happy time in my life.
i believe you got the best part of the deal. Thank God, your sons life was spared and he got a loving responsible parent. Dont let them take the beauty of that gift away.
This is so devastating to even think what you must've gone through. It's unbelievable that people like you had to carry on with everyday life when this shocking event took place, because you your little son to look after. I'd just break into zillion tiny pieces. Maybe your son was your saviour as you had no other option, but you were then an incredibly strong man, a hero really. I'm so sorry for you and your son, that you had to have your life turned upside down. Shame your wife didn't appreciate you and her beautiful family. People often take their happy marriage for granted and they think that another person might offer them something more. When you have a child, your life doesn't belong to you, it belongs to that child and your family members. You have to be a responsible parent. Had she known that, she'd be still here. I hope, you have managed to find peace after this tragedy. ❤️
This is the first time I've heard this version, yes I know it is the original but the only version I've known since '77 was the Dorothy Moore version which is a really sad but excellent rendition if this. Also I think Aretha Franklin has a cover of this but not sure what year...
Johnny Darrell discovered by a Nashville producer Kelso Herston. Kelso, Goldsboro and one other were partners in a studio in Nashville. Goldsboro wrote this song.
+UA-cam Viewer yes, i found the johnny darrell version on you tube; but to be honest, i don't remember his version( also, was not familiar with johnny darrell at all) i'm thinking different versions may have been the big hit in different regions of the country. in the mid-michigan area, where i grew up,the bobby goldsboro version got the radio airplay. where you were from,it sounds like johnny darrell had the big hit with the song.
One of the best “divorce songs” ever written by the happily married Bobby Goldsboro. Vikki Carr did an outstanding version of this masterpiece.
How is this phenomenal singer / songwriter not in the Country Hall of Fame?
Back in 1969, this wasn’t considered country & western music. It was pop. Unlike today where C&W is in very large part rock and role of the 60’s and 70’s. Mac Davis isn’t in the hall either.
Memories don't leave like people do, Missing my dad ❤❤
He's always in your mind, your beautiful memories.
My thought for you. Take care.
One of the most sadly romantic songs has ever been written (my viewpoint).
With Pen In Hand.
The original is always the best.
Simply beautiful.
Brings tears to my eyes. Loved all of Bobby's songs since I was a child..
My parents separated in 1980, my father to moved to Houston from South Dakota when I was eight years old. He left his records home and Bobby Goldsbor's Greatest Hits was one of them. I feel your pain. This guy makes the song real. Awesome how someone can translate these feelings into words in a song.
Beautiful person and feeling song he's a legend in my heart
About as blue of a song as possible
May I ask why he would move away from you?
If I were a divorced father I wouldn't do that.
I always thought of this song as hope. How could a person not be moved to reconcile after hearing this!
The great Bobby Goldsboro! Long live Bobby G! Thank you for your music! God Bless!
Nobody sings this as good as bobby a real true artist thank you bobby.
Nonsense Vikki Carr sang it much better
Nobody can sing this song like Bobby Golddboro!!!
Precious memories of my youth in the 60s. There will NEVER be times and singers like these AGAIN!! NEVER EVER!!
Vikki Carr's version is the best
ONE OF MY FAVORITES SONGS. IT IS HIS SONG, NOBODY SINGS IT BETTER.
such a sad but lovely song by an excellent artist.
Just rediscovered Bobby Goldsboro's music. Listen to it all day when working at home. Love it! What a gift!
What a beautiful song, a beautiful voice
No one going to mention his cricket chirp? Guess I will. Remembering Bobby and all the times he made me sad with his songs. GODs Speed.
Beautiful but full of sadness, an eye opener to the warring husband and wife
I saw him live in Arizona back in 1973. Still love his music to this day 👏🏻🌟❤️‼️
We saw him in the 70s in his only performance in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the Vapers night club. One night only, my wife got her picture with him after the show. Was a wonderful performance by him.
@@stevemichau4572 … Cool!

I just picture the wife looking at him, arms crossed saying "are you done?"

New subscriber, alf vill vlog. Thanks for your support.
The perfect concert would have been with Bobby and John Denver,
I totally agree and collected all their recordings which are still on my shelf. I managed to see John Denver in concert when he visited the UK but never saw a concert advertised by Bobby and sadly haven`t seen him live. Linda

Got the toupee going.
Where do I sign? PLEASE!
sad song, good for a disagreeing husband and wife
Que triste...
Johnny Darrell made this song a number one hit in country music. Give credit where credit is due....
i was not familiar with the johnny darrell version. the one i remember from my youth was the bobby goldsboro version.
Johnny Darrell discovered by a Nashville producer Kelso Herston.
Kelso, Goldsboro and one other were partners in a studio in Nashville. Goldsboro wrote this song.
yes,i knew bobby goldsboro wrote it.
That's a really ignorant question . I was pointing out a fact. Simple as that troll.
Oh its about divotce.
🙃🥲
Algum Br chorando?
Johnny Darrell is the ORIGINAL SINGER!
+UA-cam Viewer are you sure about that? i've always thought bobby goldsboro had the first version out. i KNOW he wrote the song.
You're right John....... My mistake!
Bobby Goldsboro was the writer and Johnny Darrell was right after.
Johnny darrell
Billy Vera recorded a beautiful rendition of this song also.
Good
