If this woman didn't take you on her journey you missed out. What EMOTION, HEART, SOUL. Every time she sings I'm reminded why I loved her for over 60 years. One of the GREATEST singers of all time!!
Oh, seriously. Beyonce and Taylor Swift do not come even close to this level of ability. This was when there were still real singers charting songs. Rarely happens any more.
First time I ever heard the song is right now. Yup, I’m crying, too. I’m divorced to boot, ha-ha. What makes it worse is that the person in this song has lost custody of her daughter! More tears! I didn’t face losing custody since my sons were adults, but wow, this song caused some waterworks!😊
She had just recorded this live at the Persian Room in NYC. Earlier she recorded a studio version which came nowhere near as this to conveying the emotion the song deserves. I've heard her sing this in concert at least a dozen times. Each time she brings the same emotion, the same tears. This is a talent you just cannot teach.
"With Pen in Hand" was one of Vikki's biggest hits. She gave a very moving performance on this episode. As mentioned by another commenter, it was written by Bobby Goldsboro and the single charted at 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, 6 on the Adult Contemporary chart and 39 on the UK Singles chart.
Here I am looking and listening to a wonderfully talented and beautiful lady - singing from her heart! Yet only 33 comments! I feel ashamed, because it’s only the commercial world that exists in music today.
A theme ahead of its time, as divorce wasn't nearly as prominent in the '60s as later. There are at least a couple other Vicki Carr show appearances on UA-cam where she sings this incredible piece; however, you couldn't beat at that time the audio quality, camera close-ups/angles, staging, and quality of the orchestral accompaniment of an Ed Sullivan Show appearance.
Actually, Tammy Wynette had D-I-V-O-R-C-E as the number one country song in 1968, the year before this one. I don't know but maybe Goldsboro was inspired by that one.
Older millennial I am but Vikki Carr has been part of my life from the beginning. My parents loved her. She held concerts to keep my High School Alma Mater open.
Vikki was a special performer. She brought great emotion to this song. Look at her eyes water and the tears fall. Was it real? Was it all in the act? Either way, she was quite the performer.
Vikki was nominated for a Grammy, but the competition was fierce. And the nominees are: Dionne Warwick - This Girl's in Love With You Vikki Carr - With Pen in Hand Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man Peggy Lee - Is That All There Is Jackie DeShannon - Put A Little Love In Your Heart Brenda Lee - Johnny One Time It was a banner year for female soloists! May I have the envelope please. And the winner is: Peggy Lee
@@hnc52 It was in Pulp Fiction in the 90s so later generations got familiar with it. Kinda like Rockin Around the Xmas Tree and Home Alone. "Is that all" probably won because the subject matter was so different. Maybe🤔 Or it could be that Peggy was the older artist in the group.
That's about the tenth time over the last weeks that I watch the video and listen to the song and it still moves me to tears. What a great singer. Today I realized that the top button of her dress always quivers when she holds a note.
The full and beautifully rounded and structured 'story song' at its best. No one did it like Vicki. She starts singing and takes us all along on an emotional ride to REAL places in her heart.
I grew up in a household where no one expressed emotion. I'm nearly 70 now and I remember how captivated I was as a little girl when she came on tv to sing bc I knew she was going to cry. I loved watching her. She really drew me in.
Supremely talented singer and performer who plumbs the emotional depths of whatever she sings. This is one of the very best live performances I've ever seen. It's way better than the recorded version. So memorable, I could watch her all day. Bravo!
Absolute perfection. Vikki Carr doing what she does best: delivering a perfect vocal while feeling every word she sings. Thank you very much for this upload. Please post her performance of her signature song It must be him soon! And please ... more Connie Francis!
Look at her emotion towards the end of this song, she’s is giving everything of herself in it, so beautiful, makes you want to reach out a just hold her, if always adored her.
In 1970, I was so infatuated with this Lady...I cried with this song, I so wanted to console her. I wanted to love her and make it all better.Vicki Carr made me understand that I hadfeelings, that I could love!
What a beautiiful woman, voice, lyrics and a storytelling voice which makes me feel as if though I am watching a scene from a musical performance of life's many journeys.
OUTSTANDING. A singer should never "sing" a song. They should "interpret/convey" the message. It is a transference of one heart to another. The message/emotion HAS TO be delivered. She lived the song. That is how it should always be done.
Hey this young woman at that time Vicki Carr she was singing that song to her man and his little daughter they were in love But unfortunately they parted ways wile singing the song she shed some tears she really loved him and his daughter you go Vicki girl beautiful
Absolutely beautiful song and Vicki Carr your voice and diction give me such enjoyment. My mum and Dad tough me to appreciate class when I saw. Lady you are pure class. Thank you so much ❤️
I knew that she was a Latina, but no wonder she changed her name! She has records in Spanish also. Some think she didn't get as far as she could have in the music industry because of her Hispanic origins! ☹️
If this woman didn't take you on her journey you missed out. What EMOTION, HEART, SOUL. Every time she sings I'm reminded why I loved her for over 60 years. One of the GREATEST singers of all time!!
Yes!! Just love her and love this song!! Reminds me so much of my Mom, miss those days!
I remember seeing her in concert in Toronto, years ago. Such an incredible voice. Some of her songs had me in tears.
Shut up already...what a joke of a singer.
@@teresaharry969 This song seems to be a woman trying to make up for infidelity.
When you watch the tears well up in her eyes and listen to the words.....such a powerful rendering of sadness and....loss.
Vikki Carr wasn't only singing this song, she was living it too!
She wasn’t living it being a lesbian with no kids.
I’m 75 and I sure do miss this kind of singing, A true beautiful artist and a fantastic voice.
Oh, seriously. Beyonce and Taylor Swift do not come even close to this level of ability. This was when there were still real singers charting songs. Rarely happens any more.
@@mikewebber2637 I love the "passion" these singers of "yesteryear" had. Elvis was the same. They literally "lived" the lyrics in their songs! ❤️
That's the great thing about living today... thanks to the internet and UA-cam no one has to miss this kind of singing.
She doesn't sing a song, she interprets it! Wonderful, and an exceptional artist...
She LIVES in every song she sings . NEVER disappoints.
back in time when music was music..
Sigh 😔
Probably the BEST in her time but i believe for all time
67 year old man here hearing this for the first time ever..and reduced to tears
First time I ever heard the song is right now. Yup, I’m crying, too. I’m divorced to boot, ha-ha. What makes it worse is that the person in this song has lost custody of her daughter! More tears! I didn’t face losing custody since my sons were adults, but wow, this song caused some waterworks!😊
Beautiful lady, beautiful singer and a beautiful song.
Music doesn't come much better than this.
Today's music can't hold a candle to this.
Amen!!! U r so right
All I could say is wow. What a woman.

WHAT a voice! WHAT an incredible style! In a word, Ms Carr is FABULOUS ❗❗❗
Great Bobby Goldsboro song. She did a wonderful job of this.
One of my favorite performances of anyone is when she sang See the tree, how big it’s grown. She really interpreted the emotion in the songs she sang.
And when her popularity in the US faded, she maintained a successful career for many years in Spanish speaking America.
Who else is tearing up with me in 2024? 😢
I am 🥺🐱✌🏼🤗
@@KimberlyEllis-q4eThe line "go ahead and sign your name" always gets me - and I don't even have kids. 😮😢
Her genuine goodness comes through.
Timeless...went back inside the time machine to the past..10 years old....she sounded like an Angel. 🕯

She is just beautiful in every way. Love you.😊
Never ever tired of her music and voice. Truly a class act!
Fine and emotional performance. And the piano and orchestra sound fantastic.

This is from another time. What do you expect.
I’ve always thought Vicki was a gorgeous woman!❤
Words,feelings,emotions,blended to PERFECTION …Awesome to a million !
Singing with her heart,what a voice..❤❤

Beautiful singing. She made the song sound so alive.
Mom played all her songs. Vickie Carr is intense and GREAT! Full of elegance and grace! I still remember many of the lyrics.
I Love Vicki Carr❤️
I always get misty listening to her sing this and watching her perform the song. Just marvelous!
Older millennial I am but Vikki Carr has been part of my life from the beginning. My parents loved her. She held concerts to keep my High School Alma Mater open.
she opens her mouth and i begin to melt. what a voice
Vikki was a special performer. She brought great emotion to this song. Look at her eyes water and the tears fall. Was it real? Was it all in the act? Either way, she was quite the performer.
They were real tears .
Last time I checked she was still with us!
Saw her in concert in Framingham Mass enjoyed her so much!! Her talent was far and above those of her time ❤❤

That is a strong list. I would have voted for Dusty Springfield. Son Of A Preacher Man is still heard frequently.

Have to say. Dusty should have won. Aretha was thoroughly impressed.
What emotion, it is unpretentious, it is real, it is felt. No singers now a days can do this, Kudos!!!
Superlative singing capacity and performance....
Given name: Florencia Vicenta de Casillas-Martínez Cardona....
I noticed that too..!
I'm Marty's widow l agree She was so good this song always makes me Cry

She did that and the tears building in the eyes as she sings tell us she felt every word!
I was just a kid back at this time but I adored her, she is just so beautiful, and she is an incredible singer.
Vicki Carr could own this song she lent her soul to these special lyrics.
What a beautiful tune....and what a beautiful lady!
Unfortunately she never became really popular in Europe - I don't know why ...
The full and beautifully rounded and structured 'story song' at its best. No one did it like Vicki.
