In 1992, I was a reporter for the Saugus (Mass.) Advertiser. That's where the ironworks were located, at which your ancestor worked. My 8th GG (I'm two generations older than you) was James Frizzell, who was sent to Roxbury, Mass., and became an indentured servant. Thanks for the fun video!

Thank you for that story. From other videos, I have learned that thousands of prisoners died after the battle. It speaks to how strong your ancestor was.

My 9th great grandfather Henry Magoon, age 14, fought with your ancestor the battle of Dunbar. The battle took place at dawn on Saturday morning, September 3rd, 1650. Leslie had moved his army down Doon Hill on Friday evening, September 2nd. Rather than trying to stall David Leslie's attack on Cromwell, the Church of Scotland and Scottish Parliament, who were funding his army, had actually pressured Leslie to advance his army more quickly to secure an early victory and avoid escalating costs. Giving up their superior position atop Doon Hill proved to be an absolute disaster.

3 weeks ago I heard about the 150 Scots that were shipped to Massachusetts in 1650. The story was fascinating, but probably the furthest thing from my mind two weeks later, when I discovered that my 10x Great Grandfather, John Taylor Jr. (~1630-1690) was among them. He was one of about 20-25 men shipped up to Berwick Maine to work for the Great Works Saw Mill that supplied the Saugus Ironworks with charcoal.
I am absolutely staggered at the story, and even more so that my family could have any connection to it.

Thanks for the location shot. Gives us a great perspective of the battle site. Two of my ancestors, Duncan Stewart and Robert Dunbar, were amongst those transported to Massachusetts in the aftermath.

I have lived in Dunbar for over 35 years and your video shows standard Dunbar weather - sunny but windy! There were two significant battles near Dunbar both were defeats for the Scots.
Battle of 1650 - the one in which your relative was captured and force marched to England where 3,000 were imprisoned at Durham Cathedral, many died on the march south, or in captivity. In September 2015 archaeologists announced that skeletons which had been found in mass graves near Durham Cathedral were the remains of Scottish soldiers taken prisoner after the battle. The archaeological evidence appeared to show that the bodies had been tipped into a mass grave with no signs of ceremony. At least some of those who survived both the forced march and near starvation imprisonment were deported to become indentured workers on English possessions overseas.
Battle of 1296 - King Edward I of England had invaded Scotland in March 1296 to punish King John Balliol for his refusal to support English military action in France. After the sack of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Edward rushed to complete the conquest of Scotland, remained in the town for a month, supervising the strengthening of Berwick's defences. On 5 April, he received a message from King John renouncing his homage, to which he remarked, "O' foolish knave! What folly he commits. If he will not come to us we will go to him." The next objective became the Earl of March's castle at Dunbar, a few miles up the coast from Berwick. March was with the English, but his wife, Marjory Comyn, sister of the Earl of Buchan, did not share her husband's political loyalties and allowed her fellow Scots to occupy the castle. The two cavalry forces clashed on 27 April. The Scots occupied a strong position on high ground to the west. To meet them, Surrey's cavalry had to cross the Spott Burn. As they did so their ranks broke up, and the Scots, deluded into thinking the English were leaving the field, abandoned their position in a disorderly downhill charge, only to find that Surrey's forces had reformed on Spottsmuir and were advancing in perfect order. The English routed the disorganised Scots in a single charge. The action was brief and probably not very bloody, since the only casualty of any note was a minor Lothian knight, Sir Patrick Graham, though about 100 Scottish lords, knights and men-at-arms were taken prisoner. The survivors fled westwards to the safety of the Ettrick Forest. The following day King Edward appeared in person and Dunbar castle surrendered. Some important prisoners were taken and all were sent into captivity in England.

My 9th great grandfather, Ninian Beall was also at the Battle of Dunbar. He was captured and sent first to Barbados and then onto Maryland where he served his indentured service. He stayed there when his service was over and became a indian fighter and a locally powerful man. When he died in 1717, they buried him on his plantation that he had named The Rock of Dunbarton. Descriptions of him say that he was 6 ft 7 with dark red hair. I can only imagine the fear he must have caused in his enemies to see such a man swinging a sword at them.

Interesting stuff, and worth mentioning that Cromwell’s army had really suffered throughout what was one of the worst winters with the Scots using a sort of scorched earth policy ahead of the English to deny them resources and re supply. But the New Model Army were up to it and beat the much larger force in the subsequent battle.
    A good away win. 😊 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

My 10th Great Grandfather, James Fraser ( Changed to Frizzell, the ancient form of Fraser once taken to America) fought side by side with your ancestor on that very hill. James and His brother were both captured at that battle as well and were exiled to Massachusetts on the ship "The Unity" to serve as indentured servants for 7 years, never to return to Scotland. The Frizzells Still live in New England to this very day. We all have the Fraser Blue Eyes and Red Hair.

Hi, I'm a descendant of Neile Mackone who was taken prisoner, marched to Durham cathedral, where they were imprisoned, until they were sold as slaves. Neile was sent to Isle of Wight, Virginia, where they planted tobacco. interesting our ancestors shared this same fate, which apparantly is a black page in british history. I looked at a website for Durham cathedral, and they claim it was used as 'barracks' for soldiers during the civil war. missing a few details?

I walk at the moment generally 3 or 4 times a week over the flattish ground to the north of Doon Hill -- the Dunbar side -- to where the Covenanters (the Scots) decamped. I read that the weather was really grim, very wet, drenching, and September so not warm at all. Doon Hill at the top can be quite windy. As I recall they came down for some shelter on the one hand, and on the other hand intending to engage with Cromwell. I read that the ministers of the Kirk (Church - Kirk is from the Norse) were dictating this, impatient as they were, rather then the generals. I often reflect on the carnage of the battlefield that I walk over, and imagine for a moment Cromwell's cannons on the north side of the dean (the Dunbar side) raking the field of Scots. And Cromwell's cavalry chasing and no doubt killing and capturing the Scots fleeing in disarray all the way to Haddington, ten miles to the west. There's very often not another soul to be seen there, a quiet place - now. A poignant place, with one horrifying, sad eventful date in history. Only because of a blunder by the Covenanters, giving up to Cromwell a way to rout them because of the terrain and the Scots' disposition, even though he was outnumbered.

I had read that after the forced march of some 105 miles and the period of imprisonment in appalling conditions in the then-ruined Durham Cathedral, many surviving Scots POWs were sent to the Americas as indentured labourers -- there was clearly no Geneva Convention in the mid 1600s!
Somehow it didn't cross my mind just how many people in America today would be descended from individual Scots POWs. I'm from Dunbar myself, although as far as I know none of my ancestors were present at the battle. Still, it makes for interesting, if at times harrowing reading.

My ancestor in the battle was George Ross who was sent to the Saugus Iron Works in Massachusetts. Another interesting part of the story was their imprisonment at Durham Cathedral.

My forebear Thomas Doughty was taen in that onslaught. The English were kind enough to indenture him to Puritans in New England rather than to let him go to make more trouble or to subject him to further captivity or worse.

Enjoyed that, as part of my research into the British Civil War. Didn't know Scots prisoners were transported to the US as slaves and the delayed attacking because of the Sabbath, what an error.
