Totally understand that feeling. Seeing our childhood in a museum is a blunt and disconcerting reminder that life is too short.

The fact it's still there and in that condition says it's "suspended" until someone devises and builds something better. The military doesn't like to waste resources - if it'd really been decommissioned, they'd have gutted it to the studs and sent the materials to other bases. (I used to go to RAF Burtonwood (Greater Manchester) with my Dad and one day it was closed. 2 months later, the site looked like the parking lot of a ghost town). 2 years later, you'd have never guessed a base had even been there.

Mrs Parker is a Saint to put up with your tangents. Not to mention when you get together with Graeme.
The farm house looks like Appalacian farms in America. But it certainly is a huge marker to bombers saying, "drop here".
Thank you for a look inside the Cold War.

I'm having a lot of fun working through your catalog of videos now that I found your channel. This one was great! We had a 'fallout shelter' in my middle school when I was growing up in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania in the mid 70's. The building had been built in the 50's at the run-up of MAD with the USSR. Radiation signs on the doors and big barrels of mysterious content stacked inside... I was never convinced it would have really made a difference about survival!
Anyway, I'm really enjoying your narration and getting to know more about Scotland. Thanks! Cheers from here in Summerville, South Carolina! A long way now from middle of nowhere PA... 😂

Back in the early 70s, I worked as a telephone operator. The facility was closing down in a year or so as they were switching (see what I did?) to an automated system based in the state capital. The cords were grey, not yellow, but otherwise like in the picture in your video. I didn't work there long, instead going for a barmaid job. It was more fun and better paying.

@@scotlandunplugged There was training before you were put on live calls. Emergency calls were very stressful. There weren't emergency dispatchers like now, so you had to make a decision which responder to contact. And the (then) radio calls to Mexico took much more time than you were allotted. Your average time per call had to be within a range or you had your supervisor talking at you. Lots of reasons to go be a barmaid. LOL

    Hi Robert!
This is sooo cool! I would have been running one of the switchboards. Those are so much fun.
The weird house looks like an old railway station a bit.
But, really, let's focus on the important things...those cowies! They are gorgeous! I wonder what breed they are? Kind of look like Shorthorns, but fuzzier. And that fence. Very tight!
    Cheers!

The farmhouse looks like a CPR railroad station but in stone. I grew up in London Ontario Canada in the late 60’ and early 70’s they still tested the warning sirens, and we had to go under our desks and put our hands over our ears. We were young and believers it would help.

You sure they didn't have help with the design from the US??
It looks like any number of houses in any number of states over here. Perhaps they made them all look the same so you could find it while wandering around in the nuclear winter??
If you ever get to the states, try visiting an old missile silo complex. That's creepy!! Although if you ever came to the states you wouldn't want to visit any of the states where those complexes were located....
Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota...., go to Florida where you can visit the mouse house and watch the fall of civilization up close!!

There is at least one guy who goes diving in the old missle silos. We drove around once looking at all of them in our area of Nebraska and decided there were too many. :)
The other cool thing are ammo plants. Someone built a house in one.

I wanted to take the kids to see the Discovery in Dundee but couldn't because of the price to enter. Money means more than all els. It makes me sick with disgust.
