Yeah that's what I see with my mechanic here in Germany aswell. His wife has always some leased Kia or Hyundai and he has always one of the cars he is selling with a red plate. Makes sense, he doesn't like wrenching on his own stuff, since it doesn't pay and it is his work.

You worked hard for your money, so enjoy what you want!! I worked in the automotive industry for 30 years, served in the Military for 9 years as a Military Policeman. So this year I went out and purchased what I really wanted, a special ordered 2024 Jeep Rubicon X fully loaded. I'm now 75. I don't care what others have to say, I'm enjoying life. And my wife loves it!!! Hats off to you and your wife!! Yanni
JLR owner and nerd here, great purchase, and to all the haters I will say don't knock it till you try it. I'm well aware of the reputation these cars have, but I currently own two Jaguars and can say through experience that they have been just as reliable as the Toyota's I've owned
People who've heard bad experiences from other people (who buy a 120 grand Range Rover at 10 years old with 140k for $15) then pass on their 'knowledge' to someine buying a completely different model under warranty. I have a lot of experience with these, avoid the stupid 21k oil service and do it at 10k instead, and this thing will be your favourite vehicle. Green regulations are ruining new cars.
Crazy how the haters come out when you get something nice. Congrats MRS WIZARD! Gorgeous car and hope you enjoy every mile of it. I appreciate the effort and work that goes into making these videos for us all to enjoy! ❤
Yup. These things are awesome . What people fail to realise is that things like the massively extended oil swrvices are all to do with regulations and clinate change/ big green stuff. Change the oil at 10k miles and you'll have 200k of trouble-free motoring like my boss.

Hey, as long as Mrs Wizard is happy, that's all that matters. It will be under warranty, which is a good thing, because I'm sure it will see some dealer time in the near future.
Wizard isn’t as crazy as you think, Defender 90 has a GVWR over 6,000 allowing it to be a 100% deduction. Right before the 2024 tax year ends, looks like Hoovie’s poor choices have been great for Wizard😂
@@gregpintler4846If it's primarily for business use he can, one video about it doesn't make it for the business and it'll mostly be personal use I'm sure
I used to set up tax deductible retirement plans for businesses. At year end my biggest competition was often a monster truck/SUV. Either way they got a six figure tax deduction, one was saving and investing the funds, the other was dumping money a depreciating asset. I would suggest to them to consider the vehicle if, and only if, they actually needed it, not just for the tax deduction. Lots of prospects went for the truck. SMH.
He messed up selling the bus. Not one RV video in the whole year. He complained about it taking too much time but all that was time that could have been time used for the bus. I think he lost his mind.
I've been watching this channel since it first started-- like a lot of others I followed Hoovie here and I've never been disappointed. I know a lot of folks will give The Wizard some grief about buying a vehicle that you know he will advise you NOT to buy in a few years, but his reasoning makes a lot of sense. First, Mrs. Wizard likes the car. Nothing else would matter if she didn't-- it would not even be an option. Second, he never has to turn a wrench on the Defender. One thing I've learned watching the channel is that neither of the Wizards keep a vehicle for a long time. Four years is stretching things, and by the time the warranty is up Mrs. Wizard will probably be ready for the next great vehicle that comes along. They will probably never test this vehicle's capabilities off-road, but they will be confident that it will go anywhere they want it to. And considering that the weather in Kansas can get pretty rough in winter I'm sure that it will be a safe and sure way to get around. So, congrats on the new car, Jennie! And kudos to you, David!

Looks like a great ride. I wish that dealers would have to extend the time on warranties for every day they have it tied up doing repair work. That way if it spends months in repair it is not penalizing you.
A surprising choice as you have so much on offer over there , a great looking vehicle , we love em over here and the warranty for 4 years takes away the little voice at the back of the mind ! Thank you as always for your work
Why would you spend years on your channel warning about the horrible quality of JLR vehicles and then buy one? Your comment about a warranty is interesting - the car may be covered by the Dealer but it won’t help much if it is constantly in the shop or leaves you on the side of the road.
@WhittyPics a junky car with a warranty is still a junky car. And unless you're retired and can sit around in a dealer waiting room while salesman make passes trying to sell you another junky car, that isn't ideal.
One of these overtook me and what looked like everything else on the motorway. I was cruising along around 70 ish, and the next thing was a black blur which must have been going close to 100. I had my doubts when they went upmarket with the Land Rover, but I love the design and I see farmers using the basic models with the steel wheels.
The starter alternator combo is pretty standard for these 48 volt mild hybrids. It's all the same concepts as you see on a traditional hybrid just scaled down to reduce cost and let them do everything through the v belt as a bolt on system to a more or less conventional drivetrain. The alternator is doing energy recovery during braking and probably providing some initial torque when accelerating from a stop. IIRC it's only like a 10 to 15% increase in fuel economy but it's also way less expensive than a full hybrid system. In this instance it also gives them a power source for the electric supercharger. What I'm curious about is does it do anything else with the 48 volt bus like an electric ac compressor or power steering? Edit: I really like these. I'm a sucker for a 2 door suv and I love small ish suv's with significant towing capacity.
And why not! Both you & Mrs Wizard deserve it. Your videos are a pleasure to watch. The metal plate on top of the wing(Fender) we call it chequered plate, it’s made from aluminium. We usually put it on the the floors inside commercial vehicles. Keep the videos coming. TLW 🇬🇧🏴
My defender 2023 110 P300 has a 5 year warranty here in Australia. Good thing too because it has been back to the dealer about a dozen times since I bought it. From turning off in the middle of the road (sorry sir there are no codes logged for that) to the exterior trim falling off in parking lots. I’ll be selling mine at 4 years.
@@TheEddysGarage I have had a hand full of Defenders towed in with absolutely no fault codes with complaints of the car shutting off. If I owned one that would drive me up a wall.
Congrats Wizard family on the new Defender 90. I bought a v8 90 earlier this year, I love it. Perfect size, super comfortable. It’s a lot of fun to drive. It’s my first time owning a European vehicle. I have about 5k miles on mine, and so far could not be happier.
I bought the Mrs a GLC for Christmas. Everyone raised eyebrows that I'm some sort of big shot. But I did the same math you did. I could have easily spent more on an American or Asian luxury SUV. It really is a no brainer.
Volvo in over 200hp inline 4 also used supercharger and turbo until 2021 and in 2010's 1.4 tsi from vw in hothatches was a combo supercharger and turbo 5:16
My brother had the VW with the turbo and supercharger, he’s not really mechanically minded or even sympathetic, mind you nor were the VW main dealer he took it to as they changed the cam belt and screwed it up and lunched the engine, denied it was their fault of course. This is in the UK.
I wrote off every Land Rover that ever existed. I hope you bought it for learning how to fix these in the future. That way you'll be ahead of the other shops in terms of fixing.
There’s a 48v BISG (belt integrated starter generator) that’s what starts the engine when you start stop and also a 12v traditional starter for initial startup and for backup. Most people don’t even know they are driving a hybrid.
@@hayesbrewer9014 but Car wizard says there's no traditional starter in this vehicle. So are you sure about backup starter. @@meetv7700The person who replied to your comment is correct. Hybrids already use a 48 V system with a step down to 12 V incase of needing to be jump started. That’s the role of the DC/DC converter incase the 48 V system goes down.
The thing is: It will be fixed under warranty, and don't forget, it can stay at the warranty workshop for weeks, waiting for some special parts, because many parts on this car, are probably special parts.

I just wonder what that alternator costs for its annual replacement (after warranty) and the 48v battery which is not a warranty item. Knowing about the stop start battery scam, 48v batteries will likely be next level rip off.
@@alasdair4161 48 volt batteries are covered under warranty. 12 volt service batteries typically are covered by JLR/Audi/BMW/Merc warranties due to the cost to replace them and the fact the vehicle needs to be reset using proprietary tools. Service batteries typically aren't covered under standard, non-luxury car warranties.
@@tim3172 I can't speak for the other brands, but Merc charged me for a battery inside the vehicle warranty period, claiming it comes under the consumable category of service replacement parts, therefore is chargeable, that was at two years. I can't see a 48v battery remaining as a lifetime part for very long, especially a few years from now when they all start failing.
Nice looking SUV. I like that the radio/phone/stereo screen isn't too large. A lot of newer vehicles the radio/phone/stereo screens are oversized and could become a distraction when driving.
As a previous owner of a '22MY Defender 90 S P300 and a current owner of a '25MY Range Rover Full-Size SE SWB P400 that I just picked up on December 2nd, you'll love it. I had no issues at all with my Defender.
the alternator used as a starter was used on truck refrigerator units, Back in the early 70's I was driving a MANN truck that had a Peter unit (similar to Thermo King) and it clicked on by itself and started the 4-cycle motor to cool the refrigerated section of the truck
Completely different setup for a different purpose. Those engines came with crank-driven superchargers standard to take advantageof the high octane gas. The turbo was added to retain power output at higher altitudes. They were huge and were optimized for 75% throttle or above. The Defender is set up with a big turbo to allow the 3.0 to have enough power to make a 5k pound car feel peppy, and the electric supercharger to mask the turbo lag without robbing power from the crankshaft.
I was implying that this configuration was in use over 80 years ago . The difference is the LR supercharger is driven by an electric motor controlled by the ECM. Superchargers rob horsepower when they are driven off of the crankshaft especially with a small displacement engine. The backup turbo cancels out those power losses. This configuration allowed WW2 planes to have great performance at altitudes at over 30 thousand feet.😊
@@jeffreycler495 Right, but what I was focusing on was the different purpose. Aircraft engines spend basically all their operating hours at power levels above 75%, while cars spend most of theirs below 25% Aircraft put the throttle to 75+ and leave it there, while cars are always slowing/stopping and accelerating, with the acceleration often being only to around 40-50mph, which takes nowhere near the full power output. Most cars could do most of their driving (and did, in the old days) with an engine under 100hp. If you could take the motor from, say, a P-47 and put it in a car, you would experience ridiculous turbo lag, because it's set up to run at or near max throttle, regardless of having both a supercharger and turbocharger. Big turbos mean big lag. The LR's motor is set up with the electric blower to fill in the output gap until its big turbo spools up, so that it can have that big turbo without the lag. It's a pretty slick solution (though not as slick as 'adding lightness' to the car would have been) but is there for a different reason, and with a different configuration, than the WW2 airplane engines.
@@stacymcmahon453 This is a car you need to either lease or get the exteneded warranty. Overly complicated and the brand has a poor reputation for reliability
Four year warranty, but Tata had some engine problems after they bought LR, and cars were down for weeks awaiting a solution and spare parts. Is there a loaner car for "Oh, the Jag? Its in the shop." (At least Tata didn't change that.) These days, it seems like no one has a really sparkling reputation. Even Toyota just recalled 100k cars because of metal shavings in engines.
That's the beauty of it you get a really nice loaner car when your car is in the shop. My BMW was in the shop for like over 3 months and I had 12 different loaner cars. So when I wanted a SUV I had an SUV, when I wanted a 4 series convertible done. Sure driving to the dealership was a pain but I like cars and being able to drive a bunch of different one's didn't bother me lmao
@@richardkillings7623 same with any company, but like car wizard says he got a really good deal. Relatively speaking. All my comments aside, I'm pleased that Mrs Wizard is happy. I had an old 2-stroke motorcycle with a thing called a Siba Dynastart - it was a combination generator/starter. It was built in 1964. Nothing is new, but perhaps improved.
Lovely car. I drove one of these a few years ago on a Solihull test drive experience and I was really impressed. I believe they call the brake light shape a squircle? When you go into deep water the doors fill up with water to prevent the car from floating.
Ok, we get the joke...Weeeezzard buys his wife a Land Rover.... OH IT'S NOT A JOKE??? IT'S TRUE???? Y I K E S ! ! ! "The alternator is the starter". What could possibly go wrong?
The alternator starter/generator isn't uncommon on new cars. Virtually every Mercedes has had it for 5+ years, Ram 1500s, virtually anything that mentions 48V or a mild hybrid system uses that setup
My 1960 Messerschmitt bubble car had a dynostart, ie starter combined with a dynamo/generator. As it was a two stroke engine, reverse was obtained by pushing down the ignition switch and turning it which started the engine in the opposite direction hence you had 4 reverse gears.
UK mechanic here, just changed a similar one on a qashqai, [nissan rogue to you] 2 month wait, £7,000..., in which time the battery went flat, non rechargeable, as it needs the engine running [doh!], that was cheaper at £5,000, but an 8 month wait, so, after 3 months of ownership and 3,000 miles, the car took the best part of a year + £12k to fix... yep, good idea...

He does usually say "buy a Toyota" though. Of course when it's a brand new car, if it breaks down the only thing you spend is time and hassle, not money. And most new cars from any brand are usually fairly reliable during the warranty period. But when the car is 5 or 20 or 15 years old and has 100,000 miles or more, yeah, he's a Toyota man 100%. Frankly, every honest mechanic is. The difference between Toyota and almost all other brands, even other Japanese brands (except maybe Honda) in terms of reliability is obvious.

These cars require a bit of love somet8mes..good luck! Lancia, VW and Volvo came with twin charged (turbo and supercharger) engines. Tesla uses the same split lower arm front suspension. A 1997 Prius has no starter either.
I don't think any Toyota hybrid synergy drive vehicles have a traditional starter. They use the motor/generator. I believe the Ram pickups with the (very problematic) etorque system also lack a traditional starter.
Ha! I’ve just bought myself a Range Roverie Christmas present. A three year old, very late production, November 2021 L405 Inscription 3.0 twin turbo-diesel. Bought a three year JLR warranty to go with it. It lacks head-up display and at this age the Apple CarPlay needs the phone to be tethered by cable and the two screens are more laggy than the current Pivi-Pro system. Massive saving compared to a new model today but my one is immaculate and If I didn’t know different I would assume it to be new. It has actually covered 50,000 miles but I will not do a high mileage with it, probably about 8000 miles annually. It has new Pirelli 21” tyres and an electronically deployable trailer hitch and running boards, massaging heated and cooled fully electric luxury seats. It will have cost £100,000UK new but I bought it with the warranty for less than half that. A new current model with a similar spec, which will have four wheel steering, costs UK£130,000

Volvo has a similar "super-turbo" 4 cylinder under the hood for years now. This setup reminds me of the 1990's Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7 with their sequential twin turbo setups. One smaller turbo that spools quickly for low RPM power then a bigger turbo that spools slower but really sings in the high rpm range, designed for zero turbo lag, flat torque curve, instant throttle response.

volvo has had their engines supercharged and turbocharged aswell for quite some time. Supercharger for the low RPMs and turbo for the high RPMs. The T8 engines add electric engines to it aswell.
One other friendly fellow 90 owner tip, the windshields are more vertical and prone to chips and cracks. Tyler Potter put me onto a local shop here in Wichita Andrew Holder who does PPF and detail work, he put a clear protective film on the windshields of my Bronco as well as my Defender 90. Might be worth looking into for your Defender as well. The OE glass for a defender runs around $2k, worth protecting IMO. Or at least trying to protect it.
Nice vehicle. The Detroit Diesel 71&92 series engines used a combination of mechanical driven supercharger and exhaust driven turbocharger successfully for decades. I think Lancia used the supercharger/turbocharger combo in their Group B rally car. Huge power and no throttle lag.
I've had a Defender 90 for 15 months and love it. Only ever seen 5 others on the road in that time, it's nice not having a me to car like a Wrangler or Bronco
The RAM 5.7 Etorque setup has an alternator starter/ hybrid motor. Some of the GM passenger car hybrids have that too. Once on the 401 near Toronto I towed one of these cars in a traffic jam, when the tensioner got weak. I was driving a flatbed tow truck at the time and when we all came to a stop, one car failed to move again. Instead of setting off again using the electric motor as hybrids do, a cloud of blue smoke came out from under the hood. The belt just slipped. Now that I'm back working as a technician again, I have not seen a single vehicle with this setup other than the etorque the boss has. I think those GMs will all be in the bone yard and the etorque Rams are few and don't seem to act up. I'm very curious to see how much time this new Land Rover spends a the dealer for warranty repair.
I absolutely love your channel for all of the practical advice you give. This particular acquisition appears to be a dichotomy to 'practice what you preach' mantra . I am sure it will be great for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) and then the headache and heartbreak starts as modern Land/Range Rovers are about on the bottom of the reliability list. Either way they got a six figure tax deduction, one was saving and investing the funds, the other was dumping money a depreciating asset.

Buying a new car with warranty, vs used with no warranty are two different things
WorldWar 2 tech . This was used on many US fighter planes . Turbo , super chargers. But they did use 105 octane aviation fuel with water injection.
@@stacymcmahon453Your description doesn't sound terribly different.

These days, it seems like no one has a really sparkling reputation.
The alternator starter/generator isn't uncommon on new cars. Virtually every Mercedes has had it for 5+ years, Ram 1500s, virtually anything that mentions 48V or a mild hybrid system uses that setup
He can repair, but, new technology it is only 2 or 3k to replace 😢
The starter won't go out 🤷🏻🤷🏻
Alternator start is a good idea, save a lot of weight easier to replace, hopefully.
My 1960 Messerschmitt bubble car had a dynostart, ie starter combined with a dynamo/generator. As it was a two stroke engine, reverse was obtained by pushing down the ignition switch and turning it which started the engine in the opposite direction hence you had 4 reverse gears.
UK mechanic here, just changed a similar one on a qashqai, [nissan rogue to you] 2 month wait, £7,000..., in which time the battery went flat, non rechargeable, as it needs the engine running [doh!], that was cheaper at £5,000, but an 8 month wait, so, after 3 months of ownership and 3,000 miles, the car took the best part of a year + £12k to fix... yep, good idea...

you do realise that headlights go on every car depending on use?
@ I would never have guessed that….! Obviously they’ll go? Lol These aren’t like a regular old school headlight that will blow and then you pay $15 for a new bulb to fix it… you have to buy the whole assembly for thousands of dollars! I’m sure you can afford to fix/warranty it if you can afford to buy it. I’m just saying that from my prospective it’s hard to justify spending thousands of dollars on a headlight when it costs more than the shit box I’ve been driving problem free for the past 6 years lol.
@@Cloud007. I have a 10 yr old Kia head lights have never gone out
Ram 1500 uses the alternator as a starter the one with the mild hybrid system 😅
Jeep Wrangler 2.0 e torque does as well too
She Absolutely deserves a nice ride, And Wow They did good on the Price, Personally I would take this over a Lincoln or Escalated mess any Day, I think it's Great unlike some here, Be happy for Her.
23 P300, 0 issues outside of infotainment and leaking light nozzles. Very happy with my purchase!
Funny how the expert who bought one of these cars is being told by the brave comment commentators that he is wrong to buy it, dudes ? Check yourself.
Lord forbid any of those commenters were mechanics also...I guess only the Wizard knows then..
@@Blue-moon12 yeah but it's under warranty, and even if there are mechanics this is a new engine design. Most people who have money and buy Land rovers only keep them till the warranty ends. Yes there are a lot of wealthy people that also keep them after warranty but they don't care because they make so much interest off their investments that fixing it is no big deal
@@Blue-moon12 You new to the net, Moonie ?
@@MugatuJag After Wizard telling us to not buy a vehicle with new engine designs...
@ragtopdeluxezl1 well like he says if it's under warranty, and you can afford it then flaunt it...💯
Wizard, we have one here in Hungary, Europe. Door didn’t open for 2 weeks (same as our Range Rover),car sometimes refuses to start. Wizard, please noooo.British cars? No, thanks, we got the last Toyota Land Cruiser V8 diesel, GCC model, man, what a wonderful car.btw: most presumably your car has a BMW engine (I hope I am wrong)
The only thing British about it is the design. Made in Slovakia by an Indian company.
@@MrDunclEngines made in UK. ZF transmission in Germany. Brembo brakes from Czech republic etc. Assembled in Slovakia of course.
@@MrDunclThat's good to know.
Now the haters have got more nationalities to slag off..😂
The CarPlay and radio issues will drive you crazy. For some reason I had a lot of 24’ Defenders come in with the same complaints.
Also do not follow the factory 21,000 mile oil change intervals as well. 5000 max.
21k service interval is just insane
@@daniels2761 Right? That MIGHT just barely get you over the warranty finish line.
@@daniels2761 I would see cars come in sludged regularly that’s only been serviced at my dealer.
21k? Are they high?
Volvo has a similar "super-turbo" 4 cylinder under the hood for years now. This setup reminds me of the 1990's Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7 with their sequential twin turbo setups. One smaller turbo that spools quickly for low RPM power then a bigger turbo that spools slower but really sings in the high rpm range, designed for zero turbo lag, flat torque curve, instant throttle response.
CONGRATULATIONS!Do keep us all in the loop on how are things w/this vehicle over it's lifetime with you guys. I'm an Audi 3.0T guy that does all the preventive maintenance and I've always found it to be a strong engine. I am interested in getting a Defender 4-5yrs down the road
Congrats Mrs. W!
Turbo and supercharger on a Land Rover oh mine , what can go wrong there...
It will end up being an electrical nightmare. They may get to drive it 3 months out of the year.
I'll be sure to check back in a year on your comment, Mark
volvo has had their engines supercharged and turbocharged aswell for quite some time.
The volvo t6 has been super turbo charged for years.
belt driven.

The two-door looks great! So glad you got the two-door instead of the everyday boring four doors. Love it!
I've had a Defender 90 for 15 months and love it. Only ever seen 5 others on the road in that time, it's nice not having a me to car like a Wrangler or Bronco
Loads in uk. Mostly 4 door
your as me too as anything out there
Definitely a me too type of car. Probably have a monthly payment like 85% of drivers too.
I have never wanted a car that everyone else had or wanted.
@@bryangillis1839 My as what?
@13:21 I seen it on the W213 E-Class E53 back in 2018/9
The RAM 5.7 Etorque setup has an alternator starter/ hybrid motor.
Not sure anyone cares, but the town in the Czech Republic, where the brakes are made, is called Jablonec nad Nisou
Does that translate to "pile of shit"?

I warn you. Please do not lend this to Hoovie! He has a habit of taking cars on off-road excursions with very sad results 🤣
Good thing you can work on it,because you’ll have to!
If you are lucky you leased it...if not, I look forward to the follow-up videos as we watch the remainder of your hair get pulled out. Lexus GX550 is what Car Wizard should have recommended (BS twin turbo grenade for an engine), but I suspect it would last a bit longer than the 'Cherman'/British offering in your hands (think of a 5 second fuse vs a 3 second fuse). The Lexus GX 550 has all of the nicety features to keep the Mrs. happy...I can't wait to see how this goes (maybe I am wrong, but the 'Car Wizard' in me says nope). Keep up the great content and 'bon chance' with this one.
I dig it! I almost got one myself but after driving a 2dr 6MT Bronco, I went with Ford instead. Super happy with a manual coupe that's awesome in the snow. Can't wait to take the top off in the summer!
Land Rovers are the most beautiful crap on the road money can buy. Good thing you're a mechanic.
