Calling screen time “ a less invasive version of recall” is such a weird way to describe that app. It’s almost nothing like recall. It doesn’t have the same goals or use the same methods to achieve those goals. It counts the number of minutes you have a particular app in focus. That’s it.
And its purpose is to show you how much time you spend on something so that you can be mindful about its use next time. It’s a digital wellness feature lol

@@chri-k Testing Android (as in AOSP) is definitely possible. You could install Android X86 or BlissOS in a VM and work with that. That said, these two are ofc niche flavors of Android and probably not representative of what normal mobile devices are doing. Looking at device-specific Android versions is significantly more difficult - though it might be possible if you can somehow install custom certs on these devices (I don’t know, I don’t have one. My only "mobile device", if you wanna call it that, is an old Lenovo tablet that I installed BlissOS on.). In that case, you could probably do exactly the same thing as in the video except using a physical device instead of a VM. I kinda doubt you could do anything like that with an iOS device (again, Idk, I don’t own any).

Never used MacOS, but seems like it is way more private or at least easier to disable telemetry than Windows. Maybe that's one of the reasons why there are people obsessed with MacOS.

Got to remember that the average apple user is gladly sharing their locations, search results, messages, media, bank info, and other private information via the apple apps ecosystem. Same as novice windows users gladly leaving all telemetry and ads enabled. The companies spying on them do so because they're able to. There is absolutely no reason for an OS to require an off-device account or even have the possibility to share what you're typing in your local search bar. People have let go of their privacy for absolutely peanuts in return. Learn your OS, don't give away your information regardless of how little it seems to matter if microsoft or apple knows what applications you're running and when.
I agree, from this video I see macOS as this. It's slightly less invasive than windows 11 but still spys on you BUT the exception is they actually allow you to turn it off unlike microsoft.

I've bought an iPhone like 2 years ago and I've unironically only used Siri once when I forgot to turn on my wake up alarms and I was too tired to tap my way into the clock app etc., never have I ever talked to it as its intended I think.
The parsec daemon also once got me a bit nervous but it turns out it’s just the internal name and process for some spotlight services, so no VPN action or something going on here (presumably ;))

No, signed executables is not an anti-virus, it is just checking whether they signed registered publisher and check the chain of trust. OCSP just checks the application is signed by a trusted publisher.

You actually touched on this in the video (12:05) but still went on just using MITM Proxy. 2 - I tried to find the RSS reader story but found nothing. Is this from a long time ago?
1. There are multiple ways of using it. The way I am using it (as far as I know) is not bypassed. If you use the same device system proxy settings, that can be bypassed easily, with wireguard, I don't think such a user hostile thing would happen (could cause very serious problems for people in some countries). When I tested packet sniffing (which is network level) against a VPN on iOS, there were no packets that didn't go through the VPN.

For some exciting and never-done-before content, you could do a fundraiser for a (used) TLS/SSL decryption appliance, put it between the computer and the switch, and compare what it sees to what MITM Proxy sees. You'd also need to install a root cert on the computer, so some software may not work due to certificate pinning, for those, we'll never know, but most won't mind, and at least it can't be bypassed.

I know Google has been exposed in the recent data leak but it would be interesting just how mich data you are giving up when using edge. I know its suboptimal to use MS programs when you care for privacy but i love the productivity Features Edge delivers.
Could you cover differences in Debian vs Ubuntu? I noticed Ubuntu performs significantly worse on my hardware than Debian. Strangely, Debian and Arch run very similar, but Debian seems to handle ram better on my pc likely due to using 48GB ddr4 which is not a common size. It works because ddr4 supports unconventional sizes provided the clock speed is the same as the CPU
I do plan on making a basic intro to linux video where I will cover distros. Debian and Arch are diametric opposites, Debian is very out of date (unless you run SID, which isn't tested that well), Arch is bleeding edge. I would guess a large performance variance is due to power settings, or drivers. Ubuntu is good for it's popularity (a lot of software compiled against it), and LTS releases are stable. Fedora is a point version bleeding edge distro.
@@EricParker I tend to use Debian stable with backported kernel packages. Debian is making progress. I am on 6.7.12+bpo-amd64 and Nvidia 535.183.01. I like the older Nvidia packages because newer ones did not seem to work on my RTX 3060 on Arch. Flatpak still allows a lot of cool packages on both.

I wouldn't recommend buying an ARM system (mac or otherwise) unless you want to run the builtin OS. Asahi is decent, but there just isn't much desktop linux software (unless you wanted to compile from source and not use anything proprietary) for it so far. M series CPUs are good on macOS.
