    Emma for white tails use liquid green soap. The one you use for cleaning floors etc. Its non toxic and not harming animal or nature. Put it in a bucket with luke warm water. And soak a bit then wash. Pee stains dissapear as by magic.

    Oh! Best tail stain tip.. use a bottle of ‘household vinegar’ in a bucket of water and soak it. And then wash as preferred. The vinegar will get the stains out. It’s not the vinegar for consumption but one for cleaning the house. Not sure you have that in the UK

    Today I not only used the purple shampoo, but then followed that with a purple HAIR MASK made for blond and silver hair to remove brassiness. It made loads of difference! Came out several shades lighter. One more go and I think it will be the exact same color as the top of the tail.
    You have to leave the hair mask in for 10 minutes before rinsing but it's worth the time!

    A fab vlog Emma. Back in the early sixties, my Aunt bought a pony mare, welsh X, who was the same colour, but with no dapples. She had an identically coloured daughter, who eventually also had a similar daughter. They were known, by us, as liver chestnuts, and were pretty rare at that time, in Norfolk! (UK).

    I'm not sure about mare pee, but I have to deal with cat and house rabbit litterboxes, which both pee high amounts of ammonia, and vinegar seems to take it out like a charm without being harmful. Maybe there's some kind of mixture that would work nice with soap?

    Like most things prevention is better than cure! I love my tail bag. It's lasted me years and my mares tail has never looked better. The staining doesn't look too bad on yours. Maybe one round of vinegar and baking powder will brighten them? I use a tailgator, just make sure you don't put a wet tail into it :)

    • @heathermacy409

      I second using TailGator Tail Bags!
      I would wash & dry tails and bag them up as soon as the flies disappeared and use them continually all winter through spring until the flies came back. Really reduced the amount of work to keep them clean AND they had more tail in the spring to swat & swish with.
      TailGator’s are waterproof and breathable. Super helpful product that lasts a long time!

    Thrilled to find your channel! We called our silver dapple Shetland, ‘Dapple Dan’ & he was gorgeous with striking dapples once his winter coat shed out.
    Getting the stable stains out of white tails was always a pain, so I agree with the previous commenter about the use of tail bags for prevention, as long as no one picks up the annoying habit of chewing on their mates’ tails. Once clean, Showsheen is an excellent conditioner/polish which seals each hair thus keeping it clean.

    When I first saw the picture in the video suggestions of these beautiful ponies, I immediately thought "Poly"!!! "Poly" was a Shetland pony of just this colour - I believe - who starred in several TV series in the 1960s and 70s too, I believe. These were French series, made after a story by the French children's author Cecile Aubry, who also wrote the perhaps in Britain much more famous story made into several TV series too of "Belle And Sebastian", starring a Pyrenean Mountain bitch and a little boy. In both series Aubry's young son Mehdi starred. He had or has a Moroccan name, because she was or is married to a Moroccan Prince.
    In that TV series, Poly, short for "Polisson", as becomes apparent in the title song and meaning mischievous one, is rescued from a travelling circus by a little boy, who then hides Poly in the nearby woods and enlists the help of his village friends. A lovely story, which I have never forgotten! So, of course, I had to watch this video!

    Emma so good to see you again, have missed hearing about your escapades. Lovely to meet your new tribe and they appear to be characterful too. Regarding whitening their tails, I wonder if using Bicarbonate of Soda might work?! A natural product for whitening & general stain removal, so I guess it would be animal safe. First thought would be laundry Oxi- Clean but not sure if that would be suitable for animals tails 😬. What do Shire Horse owners use for whitening their feathers? Good luck anyway. I look forward to seeing more on your channel. Best regards Jenni.

    I use tar schampoo and NAF Show Off on my piebald mare. The tar schampoo really takes the stains out. I use both Ekholms Prob tar schampoo and a quite cheap Finnish tar schampoo from Lidl as the Prob schampoo is a bit in the pricey side when you wash often. The only thing is that everyone in about 20 miles can smell the tar on me for like two days after 😂😂

    Gorgeous group of ponies but I couldn't handle the white manes and tails 😂😂 my black and smokey black are difficult enough and they are rugged full time too while they are being prepped for shows! It's an Australian brand but the Hairy Pony double strength shampoo works really really well and it doesn't strip all the oil out of the tails. The other that really helps with the mares and fillies (they are so gross!!) is using a weatherproof tie/velcro in tail bag. This stops the pee from soaking into their tails and keeps the mud out for both boys and girls.

    Mineral oil the tails and legs. It will soak in and look horrible for about 3 days BUT the pee and dirt will drip down and out and they will come out brilliant white and soft. Plus the oil acts like weather proofing for the skin and hooves(my two boys are half Clydesdale so I oil the legs and feathers once a week in the spring)
    We've used vegetable oil before on stabled horses, I fear pastured horses would eat the tails maybe😮

    Washing Clydesdale teams has taught me a few tips. As you know, Clydedales have white feathers that get so muddy or pee stained!! Yes warm water and high pressure if possible. Shampoo. First shampoo use Head and Shoulders. It really gets dirt and stains out. Slaver it on and let it sit for 5 mins. Let the Shampoo do its work. Rinse Repeat but this time, scrub at the stain usually at the end of the tail or in the horses feathers. Rinse well. For white hair, the last shampoo use purple shampoo. Let it sit for 5 mins and really rinse out well. It will still look stained whilst wet but once if is dry it will be really clean. Then, get some show sheen and spray it into the hair. Not only will it detangle the hair but it will kind of put a protection on the hair and will make it easier to clean next time. If you wanted to you could make little main plait and tail bags out of shower curtains. Soft but kind of water repellant. Tie them on to protect. They look strange though. Try it and let me know how it works !

    You might ask a hair dresser how they would lift the yellow out. True they are trained in human hair but they may know some tricks. The only tip I know is to use blueing as a rinse. It is an old fashioned laundry product that is still used to get the yellow tinge out of whites. It is actually a weak blue tint dye that counters the yellow. It was used extensively in the 50s and 60s by ladies wanting to get the yellow tinge out of their gray/white hair and have lovely silver locks.

  • @JoButterwick
    @JoButterwick Рік тому +2

    I don’t have experience with white tails but I have lots with shire horses with white feathers - which is probably worse!
    There are three steps:-
    Step 1 - washing. We used mild laundry flakes - the type for hand washing woollens. Mixed up with warm water in a bucket. Washing up liquid added directly to the hair for stubborn stains.
    Step 2 - quick drying. We used sawdust (not redwood of course). Rub it into the wet hair and shake it off back into the bucket or trug. It all comes out in about a minute as the hair dries and can be used again.
    Step 3 - protect the hair from staining. We used a cream made from vegetable oil and sulphur powder. It had a consistency somewhere between mayo and salad cream. The sulphur powder was used to prevent mud fever so you wouldn’t need that. I’m not sure if oil on its own would be too thin though. Maybe experiment - add a bit of raw talc or something similar - it needs to be something that they’re not keen on eating yet won’t harm them if they do. It was rubbed into the hair and left until the next wash. We didn’t usually bother with this step if we were washing them every day. It prevents staining, works like a conditioner and washes out like a dream.
    Hope this helps xx

    • @Vee-zx6eh
      @Vee-zx6eh Рік тому +1

      I have team of commercial Clydesdales and that sounds like something I should try! I use "Head and Shoulders" two washes then purple shampoo last wash then show sheen. Being in Australia, the saw dust here stains. I will try your laundry flakes idea!

    • @JoButterwick
      @JoButterwick Рік тому +1

      @@Vee-zx6eh That’s interesting. We had one Clydesdale and it worked equally well on him. I can’t take credit for the system though - I got it from a wonderful man who had worked brewery horses in England and used to drive our top team at shows. The third step is the one that made the biggest difference. I guess you don’t have problems with mud fever but stopping the staining from getting hold is key. I know some use talcum powder instead of sawdust for drying. I never tried it though because using this system there weren’t any stains needing to be covered up and, in my opinion, sawdust gives a more natural look - and we consistently won! 😀 All the best!

    Awww I have a Hugo, he's a little bigger than yours (16h2 ex racer), and he also loves his Hugs... so yep I call him 'Hugs' - :-)

    I don't know if you can get Washbar solid shampoo from NZ or Bee Clean Naturally White shampoo bar for horse and hound but they have essential oils and are amazing at getting our grubby Connemara's tail clean! ❤️🦄☘️

    100% agree with the gelding and have them enjoy the herd. And yes it always feels regretful at moments. I have that with both my boys. But I also see how happy they are. Especially my youngest he’s so about meeting other horses.
    Anyway.. stunning silver dapple team!
