The orchid fertilizer is my secret recipe to growing hoyas!! Every time you water, fertilize, even in winter. And tomato fertilizer In the soil when you want them to bloom!
I actually found a way to make my own , and once I did it’s actually highway robbery that they charge what they do. It should be seriously illegal . We should be paying maybe .50 cents , $1.00 tops for maybe the bottle.
A friend recently told me about the orchid spray, so I got some and omg, the very next day, I already saw a difference! I’ll have to remember the tomato fertilizer!
i’ve been struggling with my hoya so much and i can’t tell you how helpful this video was for me!!! i really appreciate how thorough and easily digestible your content is ❤️
I'm super interested in learning about bacterial and fungal infection... im wondering if this is what happened to my baby micans I potted up from cuttings. Loved this video!!! Thanks for the good info!
The drying of some vines may be caused by root rot. Especially because hoyas have very thin and fragile roots, most of them actually cannot stand drying out too much. Once this happens, if you water them, the dry roots that have died will rot and the plant will dry out and die as well. This can happen to only some plants in the pot, while others can be closer to even moisture. I have learned this while taking care of notoriously difficult hoyas. One missed watering in the summer can kill some hoya royalty.
@d b you are welcome. Since I never let my hoyas dry out completely, it has not happened to me. I also stopped using smaller terracotta pots for hoyas because they do not hold any moisture. It also causes hoyas to drop new leaves.
I wanted to comment regarding the crimson princess getting soft wrinkled leaves... But when I've seen circumstances like that I begin to suspect root rot. I had this exact thing happen to my princess and when I checked her roots they were completely rotten. Root rot in hoyas isn't noticed just by looking as rotted roots remain white... But the root casing falls off easily when lightly pulled. In my case I pulled my princess out removed every root and repotted in a more airy mixture. Might be something to consider if your hoya looks wrinkled
my princess is doing just that! and the stems are thinning out :( its hanging on a East facing window, I water it from bottom up once every two / 3 weeks :(
Fantastic video, Becca!! Thank you. I love it when you go in depth with soil, problems, fertilizer... The basic plant info is everywhere on UA-cam, you provide all that extra help. 💚💚💚💚

I have an apartment in Manhattan that gets very little light. What hoya variety does best in lower light? I will lower my expectations for flowers accordingly
Thanks for all the useful info! One of my variegated Hoya compacta got a horrible case of mealy bugs the only way I finally cured it was to fill up a bucket with water and alcohol and fully dunk the plant, I struggled with them for 6 months before I finally got rid of them
I was given a repotted (very established) Hoya Queen made up of clippings. I have noticed some of the clipped vine were potted backwards. Meaning the newer part of the vine in the dirt and the clipped part to the open air. She seems to be OK and has started rooting from the end in the dirt. However I don't see any new growth. The other properly potted vines in the pot not only are they giving off new leaves but have already flowered twice. What should I do with the backwards vines?
I live in florida and I have some hoya's out on my porch so when it rains I like to stick it out there! It's good to let your plant get "weathered" lol
I’m getting frustrated, I have two Hoya princesses, both in a windows like 5 ft apart facing west, yet not too much direct light yet one is losing verigation and new leaves are coming in all dark green. 🥺
i would love to learn about fungus+ bacteria!! i started getting into plants in the summer and have been obsessed ever since- but a white sandy looking mold or fungus has formed on the top layer of soil, on some of my plants& their stems not sure what it is or what to do about it. don't think its from the soil being wet/ moist for too long but rlly not sure..
so.. I have a hoya that seems healthy but some of the new leave have tiny brown spots, only the newly grown leave. the spots are slightly bigger or same size as if I was to stab the leaf with a sewing needle. google says it could be from underwattering and it dosent look like the bactearea spots you showed in this vid. can underwatering make newly grown leaves have tiny brown spots? awesome vid btw, I lurnd quite a bit about how to better care for my hoya!
The adequate watering issue is why I have been shoving my plants in the shower or at least watering them at the sink to the point the soil is about to spill over, that way I know the soil is being fully saturated in water. I leave my plants in the sink/bathtub/shower for a little while to fully drain.
Yes this was a great topic, I have a Princess Queen in leca, it did start to grow 3 leaves after about 6 months under a grow light. not sure if I should repot into soil. PS I just ordered your soil.
Most Hoyas are climbers, they use those little roots on their running vines as anchors to secure to a tree, trellis, etc.. Once they feel attached, they’ll put out leaves and maybe even a peduncle or two😊
Hi! I recently got a hoya (the rope one) it was a couple rooted clippings but put into a pretty big pot. (There is a pretty clear distinction in the soil) I feel like since watering is so touchy being in a pot with 4" of surplus soil around the circumference of the plant might hinder proper watering... I've learned that they like like to be root bound, but also do not like to be repotted... Should I put it into a smaller pot or leave it alone??
I did notice on my hoya macrophylla that one branch had leaves that would wrinkle sooner than the others. I just made sure to check it regularly and give it extra water. Eventually it got healthy enough that I could water it at the same time as the other branches. I'm assuming it wasn't as established as the other cuttings.
Please tell me why the stems by the roots of my Hindus rope are turning tan and drying up and the skin of the vine is pulling away from the center and it’s not thick anymore
My Hoya linearis is dropping leaves everywhere! It gets eastern exposure and is out on my lanai. What am I doing wrong? I really do not want to loose this wonderful plant.
Please tell me ur planning another video soon . I’m on my second fiddle leaf and it’s having the same issue as the first it has these brown spots that start to form on the under breath of the leaf within a few days that leaf is completely dead and falls off with tiny touch and then it moves on to the next leaf above until there are no more leafs . I’m trying everything to save this one but i can’t find a single video on it or anything at all on the web . It always suggest brown spots from under watering but it’s not that these start in the middle of the leaf ussually
Hoya compata, Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' and 'Krimson Princess,' etc. are cultivars, not hybrids. Definitely an important distinction for plant geeks. There are hoyas that have been hybridized, but not these commonly available carnosa varieties. (Hoya mathilde is one example of a hybrid, Hoya carnosa x serpens.)
Question about foliar spray and direct light. Would grow lights be considered direct light as well. What should I do if I want to use some foliar spray but keep them under grow lights. Should I turn of the lights for a period of time?
I haven’t heard of people having issues with grow lights + foliage spray... usually it’s just sunlight that can cause issues. That being said, I never saw burns when I applied the spray in direct sunlight. I’ve just heard from others that it happened to them!
I have a Hoya Princess vine cutting rooting in water. Two actually. One I cut off cuz it was all green and the other got ripped off by accident. I wish I had known to put them in a prop box like you described but Currently they are both putting out roots anyway. Should I now put them in sphagnum moss you think? This whole thing started out as an experiment but since they’re shooting out roots I’d like to keep them alive.
i have an huge hoya Crimson Queen with meally bugs problem, once i see lot of them getting bigger i will wash it with pressure water, and i was planning to change the soil since the soil medium is a coco peat since i bought it, is that ok if wash and change the soil completely???
I love all my hoyas. Oldest is approx. 15+ years old. I think I have around 50 different species now and love them all. I root in either water or perlite and have had great success. Thank goodness for plant lights as I have a very dark house. I'll be so glad when spring comes around and I can put them outside and watch them go wild.
Thank you for this. Would you happen to know why some leaves will develop very misshapened? Will get normal leaves on a runner and then out of the blue, one will grow deformed. Ideas anyone? Can't figure....and it is not pests. That was my first thought.😕
I bought a hoya tricolor cutting off someone last year. It's since put out 6 new leaves and continues to grow but all the leaves that have grown for me are pure green! The first set of leaves are white in the middle, green on the edges, and have a little bit of pink. The second set is the same but less pronounced. And then all the leaves after are just green. They will revert if lighting conditions aren’t optimal. I had a Hoya Carnosa that I put in an east facing window and low and behold, my boring green H. Carnosa shot tons of variegated leaves and is actually a Krimson Princess. I think if you put your plant in better lighting conditions it may help your Hoya grow the variegated leaves you are seeking.
I've also found, with my Hoya pubicalyx, the only hoya I own, is that if I move the runner around too much growth will stop for quite a while. Anyone else notice that?
The hoya is probably like "Oh man! I don't have a secure hold! I'm falling!" JK The hoya is looking for somewhere to wrap around securely before it bothers throwing out leaves. I just ordered some bamboo sticks for my hoya australis and hoya pubicalyx. They stop growing for a bit if I adjust the runners which are trying to wrap around other plants
@@janice4512 yes, that can be an issue but mine is on a trellis. When it pushes out a runner, if I move the runner to attach to the trellis, it will stop growing for a few weeks.
