Nearly 35 years later, this is still the most epic ending of any Batman movie.
Most epic ending of any comic book movie period
Facts
I prefer the one from Begins but they're both amazing
I fully agree with this statement. But I do think the Batman Begins ending was also pretty damn good. Still, Batman 89' edges slightly.
Years later this is still my favorite ending to any Batman movie...
@Rileyb reals Me too, and I LOVE Batman Begins and the title drop at the end. But Danny Elfman's score of any movie is pure magic!!!!!!!!
My 2nd one is Dark Knight.
Burton’s original cinematic masterpiece - there’s no comparisons
It will always be my favourite Batman film ending
EPIC!
That music was awesome too!
Burton made the best Batman movie !
Amazing how older superhero films can feel so artistic and even experimental.
Because they were. Comic book films today feel formulaic and don't take much risks. I think it's why Joker and Logan were so successful, they told familiar stories but in their own unique ways.
That music, those actors, that feeling. This will always be my Batman. Always.
You know why you feel that way because this Batman movie was the first ever Batman to be turned into a motion picture in human history. So its historic and it broke box office records in the theater and was in the guiness book of records back then. That movie so much money like close to a billion dollars at the time. Its my favorite Batman movie too because it's original
Danny Elfman was a hidden gem.
Those bells, still resonates in me after all these years! The movie that changed Batman forever!
My childhood in a nutshell was rewinding this thousand of times this, on my VHS! Epic moments!
still my friend..yes the f bells
Bro this was nuts. Nothing even gets close to its epicness. Perfection
Alfred so british hes driving on the right hand side of the car.
It was filmed in tbe uk. But well spotted
TheAllaksion lol, your profile pic doesn’t work I’m on dark mode
@@Sean-wx2ht Lol so many messages saying im evil for my symbol youre the first who isnt fooled.
Haha I'm laughing because I've seen this a billion times and never noticed that
So its a right hand drive in gotham…
I love it when Alfred says " I thought champagne might be in order ma'am." That's class.
The triumphant music and the final shot gets me teary eyed every time🥹🥹🥹
I know, it gets me teary eyed too!
Same
I love this ending so much since I was 4... Always thought Kim basinger was so beautiful and this ending brought out her beauty. That plain and simply is the best ending to a movie
MASoulChild85 Let’s do the math, shall we?
Batman + Kim Basinger + Vicki Vale = good guy
Cool World + Kim Basinger + Holli Would = bad guy
See her getting banged a bit in 8 mile lol Yessssss oh cool world I remember that, that with Brad Pitt awsome movie
I saw it when I was 7 years old.I remember my dad bought the vhs Batman for me on Christmas day 1989.
That ending track is so damn good it gave me goosebumps. Back in the early 2000s when I first saw this movie, and even now, when I'm in my 20s. Enduring, Heroic, and Triumphant.
This movie has the best soundtracks all over
I feel u but if u seen it in 1989 like i did , it hit different
Hear here. Danny Elfman on FIRE.
Michael Keaton=best Batman ever!
Robert Pattinson for me
@@ajdoyle8869 get the heck outta here with the twilight fan boy shit lol u must be between the ages of 15-25 lol
@@ajdoyle8869 Gonna sound mad, but Ben Afflecks batman was very under rated, he deserved his own solo movie written by someone competent. Not saying hes the best but criminally under rated.
Man what an ending, Ima have to rewatch this again instead of watching clips!
2:13 no other ending score can top this!!
So true! I've always loved the score at the end.
Nexodus Same here! So glad Tim Burton chose Danny Elfman as composer, no one could’ve scored this film better!
Ross DiamondThief, I agree.
Yea TAKE THAT SUPERMAN
Chris Reeve/Superman--Brandon Routh/ Superman Returns--BOTH endings...on PAR with KEATON/ BATMAN...sorry Bale fans...you are not Batsy...
*Commissioner Gordon:* "The reign of crime is over!"
*Penguin:* "Wait 'til they get a load of me..."
All kidding aside, this is such a great ending.
I can imagine Penguin watching what was going on from one of the sewer grates. He was probably thinking about Batman being some competition. Imagine if Penguin decided to emerge from the sewer during the events of this movie and he teamed up with Joker.
The Red Circus is back in town, bitch!
@@ryanstauffer119 yeah lol, that would be nice. he could learn from joker's mistakes and make himself look good in front of everyone, like he did for a while in Batman Returns.
In my opinion this will always be the best live action batman movie of all time
Zack right and is the first film
I love this movie but the dark Knight is the the best
@@flashthompson6631 Definitely!
@@flashthompson6631 Dark Knight doesn’t honor the source material, it’s Nolan’s interpretation and he watered down Batman & everything else. This is the most comic accurate version especially when it comes to the Joker so it’s my favorite. It’s the most entertaining, has the most personality & the artistic design is out of this world. Nolan’s city looks like any old city, but Burton’s looks like Gotham.
The Burton and Nolan films are legendary. Can't wait to see The Batman next March
This had the best ending scene of all batman films!
And there stood...A Dark Knight.
Thus, a legend was born.
This is how it happened. This is how The Batman was born.
Mr. Green Exactly.
Definitely!
Warner Bros.: “I never said thank you.”
Tim Burton: “And you’ll never have to.”
I love how they did Gotham City in this Batman. It looked straight out of the comic and suited the overall batman vibe so well. The Nolan one was pretty much New York...
Chicago*
My suspension of disbelief is very unstable when it comes to Nolan’s Gotham in the second and third movies. I seriously find myself pausing to ask myself “Ok, but how does Batman move around this place? He’s not Spider-Man.”
This was the sexiest batman movie ever. Prince soundtrack in this movie set the tone.
prince soundtrack is perfect!
This movie doesn't have a sexy scene.

Man, I was just six years old when this first debuted, and years later it's still the best.
I love the music when the movie ends. I wish I watched this movie when it came out in '89. I wasn't even born, then.
I saw it when it came out in the theatre and I can assure you it was an epic movie. It was every bit as good back then as the Christopher Nolan trilogy was from recent times. Prior to this movie, all you had was the goofy low budget television show from the 60's with Adam West. This was miles ahead of that stuff.
I watched it with my dad and brother at the opening screning with cast and crew .we knew a main stuntman.lucky break never forget it.
I was born three years later
I was 7 when this came out and you couldn't go ANYWHERE without seeing the Bat logo all over the place. The action figures couldn't stay on the shelves, any type of Batman merchandise sold out, every kid was either Batman or the Joker for Halloween that year.
Micheal Keaton Will Be the Best Batman For Me! ♥️🦇♥️
I love this "Batman" by Micheal Keaton is the best and can't be imitated by anyone else!
Still My Favorite Batman Movie.
2:03
When that music kicks in, it's nothing but *EPIC* !!!

The Joker (killer of Bruce's parents) is dead and gone, and Bruce has finally avenged his parents' deaths.
He Also Doesn't Know That Bruce Wayne Is Batman, But Bruce Wayne/Batman Knows That Jack Napier Is The Joker In Batman 1989. Joker Thought He Killed Bruce Wayne, But Bruce Wayne Had Tricked Him By Putting Vicki Vale's Bullet Proof Make Up Base On His Suit To Make The Joker Shot Him And Bruce's Plan Worked, But The Joker Didn't Know That Bruce Wayne Is Still Alive.
Exactly what I thought to myself as a child when I saw this scene
1:03 is always my favorite moment of this masterpiece!
Seeing Batman standing on lookout over Gotham with those bells ringing gave me chills down my spine when I was eight. Does the same thing at 42 years old…the best super hero movie closing scene ever. No contest.
This ending is a whole lot better then the Dark Knight ending.
I might disagree
I'll agree to disagree with you there.
@Garrett Smith What's the matter, you don't like a stupid Commisioner Gordon pathetically pontificating to a girly-boy kid about the definition of Batman in the most inappropriate time and place for the weakest lecture in all of human history?? 🤣
I agree
I liked the score here
It felt more like he is the hero of Gotham yet he is a demon to the criminals because of the soundtrack
Batman is another movie that really hasn't aged. Due to its use of practical effects and the mix of modern at the time and 1930s style, you really cannot pinpoint when it takes place. While The Dark Knight is a better movie...this is the definitive Batman.
Yep! I loved how it adapted that timeless look Gotham has in the comic-books, something that carried over to Batman: The Animated Series and has will thankfully be adapted in The Batman. I'm just not a big fan of the modern day Chicago look of the TDK trilogy.
That's why Tim Burton was the best choice for this. He's managed to make movies that feel both modern and timeless. Not an easy thing to do
Zach Morgan I wish Tim Burton was left as director for 3 and 4 films Warner bro’s screwed up letting him go after the 2nd movie
The dark Knight stands for justice and never giving up
0:34 - Harvey Dent: “We’ve received a letter from Batman this morning. Please inform the citizens of Gotham, that Gotham City has earned a rest from crime. But if the forces of evil should rise again. To cast a shadow on the heart of the city. Call me.”
Alexander Knot: “One question: how do we call him?”
Commissioner Gordon: “He gave a signal!”
1:03 - Commissioner Gordon flashes the Bat-Signal.
I'm in love with Kim Basinger's hair here (...and Kim... ❤) This ending sequence is so epic! Danny Elfman is a maestro.
Its been so long since I've seen this movie and its holds up as well as I remember it. What makes this movie so good is that there was nothing for it to live up to so Tim Burton could have creative liberties to make it unique and artistic in his own style. Everything a director wants. It can even be watched as a stand alone movie.
Danny Elfman was the producer for the music in this and just about every other film worth speaking of in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He had at least a decade, if not 2, of absolute dominance in the film industry. Absolutely brilliant man.
I'm gonna go on record and say that I love this movie.
Still, having said that, I wish the love story between Bruce and Vicky was better written with a couple more scenes of the two of them connecting, because they are both great actors and it would've been nice to see Vicky talk with Bruce about his parents getting killed, and see her crack that hard armor of his (not the bat suit lol) .
Bottom line, I love Jack Nicholson, but there was too much Joker and not enough of the title character.
Obviously, they didn't have time to explore Batman's past for this type of film, but more scenes to better get us into the psychology of the character would have been great for Michael Keaton.
I think I might agree with you.
1 of my top 5 childhood movies!!! Plus Michael Keaton is hands down the best batman ever!!!
And then catwoman copied Batman's ending shot in the sequel.
Serge right by looking at the bat signal in Batman 2
I guess in Tim’s Batman 3, it would be Robin.
Still my favourite movie!
My fav superhero BATMAN
Me too
30+ years later, I still love this film. It made a tremendous impact on me as a viewer and bat-fan.
It’s unfortunate that the first film ended up being the best one in the original Batman series. They really didn’t get why this movie was a big success when they made the 3 sequels.
I think it's because the 89 Batman is one of the few live action Batman films that had the perfect tone. The film can be dark and disturbing but it still has a sense of fun and adventure to it.
Jalen Johnson geez it’s nothing but fun fun fun for you overgrown adults. It’s like it has to be positive in order for to be a good movie, smh.
I think the second one was the best one.
3 Sequals? But there's only 1 sequal to this movie
@@bananadan5567 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman and Robin' are considered part of the same continuity of the first two Burton films.
2022 BATMAN RETURNS AGAIN IN THE FLASH!
Always loved the ending when batman is standing there
Ladies and gentlemen, if ever in a film there was a score of victory, a score for justice and a score for triumph, this closing, riveting score is it. Danny Elfman successfully put together the chords that unlocks the feeling of a superhero's victory in all of us.
And Vicki vale was never seen again.
What an ending score. Goosebumps all the time. Apart from man of steel best score ever
At that moment, what we had to beat in live action were still those nuances of the series with Adam West and that comical feel that was very little aligned with the comics.
As a child not even 10 years old in Brazil (where old American series were constantly shown on TV) I had a phenomenal impact caused by this film.
In addition to the hype created at that time around this production, there are fond memories of my father taking me to the cinema to see this film and still being faced with such an emotional and satisfying ending.
I remember that my school notebooks had images from the film on the cover and I completed an album of stickers exclusive to that film.
Billy Dee, so smooth.
Its amazing to me how many supposed Fanboys and comic Traditionalists, who are SOO quick to "correct " all the deviations made by filmmakers, are often themselves completely unaware that there was a time in the very early comics(Golden Age era) where Batman DID kill on occasion. He didn't start out with a "One Rule." Alot of people for some reason think he did.
In fact no comic book character(Not even Superman) before the 1950's and 60s had a rule against lethal force.
That came about after a bunch of do-gooders got the comic industry to censor itself. To essentially make the characters more "Kid Friendly." That's literally the only reason any of them have the rigid rules and tropes that they do.
Bill Finger and Bob Kane had a more gritty vision for Bats than what the watered down cliched version ended up being.
So in reality the general take of Burton, Snyder and presumably Reeves on Batman is more connected to the core vision of Finger and Kane then really any rendition we've seen in film, animation, or video games.
Who cares? No-killing rule is an easy example of "art through adversity," the origins were corporate but in actuality it made the character more interesting and gave him better stories. Many comic characters were created by their creators with different intentions than they end up going down the line, might as well make a Deadpool movie where he's a regular assassin and nothing else since he was created to be a Deathstroke clone and nothing else. Batman became anything but "watered down," those original stories are ass, just standard hard boiled detective stories that every comic and radio show was writing at the time. In regards to this movie you can say the same thing, everything was changed not for artistic innovation but to make it more palatable to average audiences, Joker kills Batman's parents because a run of the mill revenge motivation is literally the best Burton can come up with. It's not a bad movie, but it's not even close to a "true to character" adaptation for the flimsy reasons you've stated. But enjoy you're mediocre 1920's 10 cent comics I guess.
@@Tribrachidiumheraldicum Thank you!
@@Tribrachidiumheraldicum I think different interpretations of characters are fine and comic book fans are by in large, completely pathetic
I only wish that that Warner Brothers let Tim Burton finish his Batman trilogy. Batman and Batman Returns are the greatest Batman movies of all time. If the Burton trilogy was complete it would have been the greatest Batman trilogy of all time.
Blame those parents who were against violent in Tim Burton's Batman Returns.
Kim Basinger was a last minute replacement for Sean Young who was originally cast as Vicki. A horse riding accident sidelined her and Kim was contacted right before they started shooting the movie
This is the best ending out of all the Batman films. 🦇🦇🦇🦇
Hands down my favorite movie of all time since I was 3 years old
I still remember how overwhelming it was, watching in theatres, back in 89, as a 10 year old, the image of Batman in that height, contemplating the Batsignal, to the tune of those bells… still gives me goosies, 33 years later…
3 words... DANNY ELFMAN ROCKS.
The music in this closer is really what makes it.
How awful do Batman Forever and Batman and Robin look in comparison to this movie? Pretty bad.

One of the best movie endings of all time. Back when comic book films were motion PICTURES, and not commercial diarrhea like the MCU.

Without their magic computers for unrealistic achievements, I wouldn't trust any of those so-called heroes in the MCU to be able to even make a bed without pissing and moaning about it for hours until they were able to get started.
They all act like 13 year old boys who never even bothered to learn how to get off of their mother's breast milk.

The 80s DC Trinity at its finest.
0:58 2:02 The theme that set the award winning tone for the animated series
This batman lives rent free in my heart. No other batman is better.
Wayne's apex in this Universe; the Joker has just been defeated and Gotham has embraced its mysterious & dark vigilante as the City's Champion; it all went downhill for him after this.
I love Michael Keaton Batman
The part where Vicki looks up into the sky and sees the bat signal while the melancholic theme plays always stuck out in my mind. Just brings me back to my childhood, dressed up as Batman while watching this movie on cable TV at night 😢
Gordon: Our police have rounded up all of the Joker’s men. The reign of crime is now over. Public safety in Gotham is no longer a laughing matter.
Dent: We received a letter from Batman this morning. “Please inform the citizens of Gotham that Gotham City has earned its rest from crime. But if the forces of evil should rise again to cast a shadow on the heart of the city, call me.”
Knox: Question. How do we call him?
Gordon: He gave us a signal.
1:03 🦇
Love the ending music and the symbolic gesture at the end with Batman next to the Bat signal being Gotham's Dark Knight.
Also like how they paid homage to the Animated Series with a bit of the dark-toned music as well.
This came out before the Animated Series
"I'm not a bit surprised." Hey Lois Lane, take notes!!! LOL.
This is the type of ending every comic book movie should have , this is a 10 out of 10!
There were only 2 batmans in my life! Michael Keaton & Adam West !!
The Burton Batman movies have aged like fine wine. An atmosphere, originality and style totally missing from modern superhero flicks.
And Knox just fades away into obscurity, getting nothing in the end.
Knox comes back during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, but that's it. I'm sure he was around years later during the events of The Flash movie, but obviously never seen.
Everything is just like comic book. Art, ambiance, characters everything. God why cant they use this a blueprint to make more films just like this? This is Batman.

Best ending to a movie ever. Those bells, that shot…
My only complaint about this scene is that the music is not loud enough. I think it should have been louder. I usually turn it up when this scene comes. I miss having my surround sound. It was loud.

Had this movie been a one and done, I think everyone would have been satisfied with it as a stand-alone Batman film. Not that there isn't a campy charm to Batman Returns, but this was the only one of the 80's-90's Batman films that really seemed to take itself seriously.
Love the look of Gotham City in this classic Batman film!!!!
You know I was born in 88 and I lose my way often. Yet since I was raised on such a great standing of a superhero it just gets me in gear. God bless the mfucking 89 Batman

Had a Superman vibe in the music there for that last shot.
Here’s here.
Who??
The Batman!!
Whenever I get a Win in life no matter how small or big, I blast this ending theme to celebrate.
In hindsight, this story could be read as just one long series of bad Tinder dates for Vicki Vale...reading everything from her point of view definitely puts a refreshing spin on things. Her choices are a not so truthful, suave eccentric millionaire, and a suave comedic/lunatic mobster, who takes a common interest in art with her, and twists it into a perversion. Btw, it really can't be overstated how much credit should be given to Kim Basinger in this film. Her performance is a complete knockout, in a role which could easily have been lost in the shuffle with a project this massive. This film belongs in the category of "we know it's a big crass commercial extravaganza, but we don't care, because it's still a giant barrel of fun anyway."
Vicki Vale is our point of entry into the narrative, and her curiosity is what propels the action forward. I also like the fact that she isn't particularly scrupulous either; her motivation is to get the scoop, sometimes at great personal peril. Implicating the audience is a hallmark of Hitchcock, and Mr Burton and the writers consciously evoke this phenomenon throughout the film; not just at the spectacular finale. At any rate, through Ms. Vale, we may examine the freaks and their motivations at arm's length.
Btw, it's easy to miss a small irony in the script: The Joker shoots his romantic rival Bruce Wayne in Vicki's impossibly spacious apartment (remarked on twice, no less; was this an in joke with the scout manager?), then tells him "never rub another man's rhubarb." However, if he had simply followed his own advice, he might have avoided becoming The Joker in the first place...
Notice as well how the female protagonist-turned-seductress is the villain's undoing; that particular trope is as old as Salome and Herod, Samson and Delilah, and so on. This happens in Aladdin, too, and no doubt many other familiar (and yes, admittedly quite lucrative) films.
I don't know how much Mr. Burton's girlfriend at the time contributed to the script, but it does sure seem like the story, whose source material is just a collection of any adolescent boy's wildest fantasies, is elevated by a woman's touch, with considerations from her point of view. More than a few men out there have had to reconcile the slickly-produced, nonsensical fantasy figures of women presented to them in the beloved comic stories that they grew up with, with the realities of actual women, girlfriends, wives, etc.
Kim Basinger plays beautiful, tough, drunk, humorous, vulnerable, compassionate, understanding, curious, trepidatious, driven, incensed, romantic, and bored, all in one performance. Moreover, her innate beauty is expertly toned down most of time, with help from great makeup and unflattering lighting at times. As a consequence, Vicki Vale is still the object of our collective adolescent affection and attention, but she is also humanized, to a degree, and someone you could just be friends with.
At any rate, hats off to Kim Basinger, who was a great sport, and definitely earned her pay in this one.
We never got billie d as two face 😂
Or Robin Williams as the Riddler (though I could hardly picture him portraying a villainous character).
