Jason I cannot believe this bottle didn't make your Top Ten for 2021!! It was better than most all of them that you had. I recently tried this bottle and was completely blown away by it and searched out three more to purchase. In a mediocre year for bourbon this bottle should be in everyone's Top Ten because it is so good, if not for it's uniqueness alone!
Just watched this again because I picked up a Seagrass and a Dovetail this past week. I tried them before watching and again while watching. Your review is spot on! I’m getting a very similar nose and taste as described. Really a nice rye pour!
I just opened this bottle, my brother in law got it for me on Christmas. I've tried it neat, cubed ice, cubed stones. Loved it all different ways. My bottle says 120 proof .
Nearly got this several times at my local liquor store and couldn't commit... until I saw your review. Just cracked my bottle tonight: Started out with crushed herbs, pineapple and candied apricot gummies. Became juicy grilled pear and charred eucalyptus. By the bottom of the glass it was all salted strawberries and spice. Savory. Sweet. Spicy. What a freakin' delicious unicorn!
Great review man! IMHO this is a unique piece of art. Bravo Barrel!!! I absolutely love it and I’m almost through my bottle. You nailed it with the combo of sweet and spicy! It reminds me of Pineapple liquor upside down cake with spice and citrus notes everywhere. One of my favorite so far of 2021. Cheers
Finally found one, it's everything you say it was absolutely fantastic so complex and unique my bottle is at 119.12 proof 14,960 bottles. Very buttery sweat on the pallet I get that grass note and a rum finish and then those rye spices kick in FANTASTIC! Added this one to my growing Rye collection Rare Breed Barrel Proof Rye, Sagamore Cask Strength Rye, Sagamore Double Oaked Rye and a blend of 50/50 Sagamore Cask Strength and Sagamore Double Oaked (a must try if you haven't had it). I also found the Seagrass Gray Lable today but at $265 just couldn't pull the trigger after seeing your review.
Cracked this bottle and your review was spot on! So far you've led me to Sagamore 8 year, Russel's SiB and Rare Breed. Your reviews are awesome. No-nonsense, detailed and full og love for the special sip. Cheers!
Bro, had it today for the first time. Might be my favorite rye whiskey of all time. It's between this, HW double rye brandy cask, and Willett. Thank you for the review!
Your comments about Barrel starting at the 11 minute mark is EXACTLY how i feel lol This blue run craze is hilarious. Give me something suppppper unique like this all day over the average sourced bourbon. Credit to Barrell for not being afraid to push the edge, this certainly was a winner of that mentality!
My bottle is 119.84 proof not much hotter than the 118 proof, but I've never had the latter. I will just say the finish is ALL Apricot on the higher proof seagrass. One of my favorite pours of a finished whiskey. But I'm about to get my first bottle of FourGate will see if they have anything to say about the subject.
Finally found a bottle of the Seagrass in the 614, so I scored a bottle and then ran home (ok, I drove and followed the speed limit) to watch Jason's review. Now I'm ready to uncork this bad boy.
I really liked this offering. Just the creativity in the finish is fantastic. I agreed with most of your notes, but I did feel like it drank lower than the proof. You were on the other side of the spectrum. But I could live in that nose alone. The fresh herbs with a minty undertone and sweetness coming forward is fantastic. It is certainly not a KY Rye, at all. What an amazing experience. Thanks for convincing me on pulling the trigger on this one.
Got a bottle of this yesterday. So interesting. The spice initially punched me in the face but opened up so nicely. Really sweet end up with a drop of water. Big fan of seagrass. Go Bucks
Never had Barrel, always skipped by it. Seen this review and others. Picked it up, probably going to be my whiskey of the year. Favors I have never had from a whiskey but I loved them.
I finally got this bottle a couple weeks ago. While everyone's palate is different, I didn't get the strawberry but definitely got a LOT of apricot. I very impressed by this bottle and will get more!
Man this bottle drinks sooooo hot for me. Can taste the flavor but can't get past the burn. My bottle is at 126 proof but drinks like 140. Every sip is like I have GERD. Let it breath, but midway it's same thing. Haven't opened my bottle of Armida or Dovetail yet. Hope that experience is better.
Great video! We just reviewed this one too and absolutely loved it. We picked up a few single barrel store picks after we had this one. They were all excellent.
@Two Finger Spirits, I was curious if any of the store picks you had were 7 year Kentucky distilled? A local shop has one, I’ve had a 14 year Barrell pick that tasted like the Dickel profile. Cheers!🥃👍🇺🇸
This truly sounds like one of the craziest whiskeys ever!! I’m watching your video again to make sure I’m pulling the trigger on this one. I’m gonna take the plunge and give it a go
Jason I agree with you pick of this as your Rye of the year. Interesting and very fresh and warming! Enjoying this with a CLE Chele cigar which I highly recommend as a great stick for 7 bucks! Really appreciate your channel! BTW an old friend of mine from Philly was a fill in drummer for Cheap Trick back in the day!
I love this bottle. I think people that also like Irish and some spey side Scotch Whiskeys will love this bottle. I need to go buy another one to stash away.
This bottle has definitely piqued our interest. Of all the people reviewing whiskey out there, you’d be at the top of our list to review this one and let us know whether we need to snag one or not. Definitely seems like something extremely unique. Great review Jason!
Finally got my hands on one. Been let down by Barrell in the past, but absolutely love this seagrass for the uniqueness and depth and heat. Might try to track down some of the strange finished Hubers out there to compare to this. I’ve steered clear of whacky finishes in the past, but this has me reconsidering.
Unique and different makes me think of the Jefferson's Groth Cask finish which is one of my favorites. Sounds like this is probably up my alley and I'll be looking out for it!
Some of these multi finish whisky's are a little funky. I do, however, have a 14 yr old full strength Barrel store pic I got last year. Absolutely fabulous. Nursing it currently bc it was a one off.
Can someone compare this to AE Rye? Im curious to see how this stacks up. If it isn't a fair comparison, what other bottle would be a close taste to the AE Rye?
I am with you. Tired of looking for unicorns. Give me something that is going to push me back a little. I tried the Dovetail and a store select 14yr cask strength that was amazing... After trying these two, I always have my eyes open for Barrell
Hey Jason. Great review as always man. Do you think this bottle is worth the $80 it is my way? Sounds like it is far less “hot” than say C920 (I enjoy that) lol….
Opened my bottle last week. I’m still not sure what I think about it. It’s just so unique. I’m a sucker for rum cask finished bourbons and ryes, but this is very different. Will revisit it in a few weeks to see if it evolves.
Damn you! I have walked past this bottle 3 times, but I tend to agree with your takes. I will have to give it a try. I will admit the Armida grew on me over time.
I love my Bourbon but.. I also love Scotch simply because you can get something that is entirely different with a wide range of profiles that you just can't get in most Bourbon. I'm all on this one.
I think some of these bottles are going to have to come with a booklet to get into their blend contents. I was offered this today, but after the Armida blend review... and the 140+ price, I passed. Thanks for review!
I don't like rye spice so I elected to buy the Dovetail. What a special treat that is. Nothing like I've ever had but I have never gotten so much rich cake and rum and pineapple on the nose. And then there are all the bourbon notes that play really nicely.....not a 120 proof experience. Very dangerous. :)
Is it anything like Teeling Small Batch? Whenever I have that stuff I get Jamaican Rum (rotten banana) notes. This sounds similar but with the Agricole funk (grassy)
Love me some experimental whiskey that rewards the brave souls taking a chance. It sounds like the end result is positive. If so, well, I'll be on the hunt. Thanks for the review, sir!
Also a correction: if a rum uses beet sugar, that is not rum. Rum has to be made from a sugar cane by-product, not any sugar by-product; molasses, cane juice, or cane syrup (fermented juice that was boiled)
Had a sample of this on the Whiskey Tornado’s last livestream. I had no idea what it was but it’s incredibly unique and makes you do a double take right away. Amazing stuff!
GET A POUR BEFORE YOU BUY THIS ONE!!! It's super interesting, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea and the MSRP is too high to just buy a bottle and end up not liking it.
This bottle is amazing! So happy with everything Barrell is doing.
Jason I cannot believe this bottle didn't make your Top Ten for 2021!! It was better than most all of them that you had. It was my #1 rye of the year
Just watched this again because I picked up a Seagrass and a Dovetail this past week. I tried them before watching and again while watching. Your review is spot on! I’m getting a very similar nose and taste as described. Really a nice rye pour!
I’ve been relying on your reviews for the past 3 years and I’ve JUST now realized that I’ve never subscribed lol
But I am now! 🎉

Barrell are freaks of nature in the whiskey world and their Seagrass Rye is incredible!!
Just picked one up and we can't wait to do a review on it. More and more we're loving high proof rye with any treatment.
As always, great video!
I'm about to finish this bottle and need another. I love finished ryes and this one knocked it out of the park.
Just bought my 3rd bottle lol This stuff hits so many boxes for me. So. Good.

This bottle is ridiculously good…I just bought my 2nd bottle with zero regret. Best whiskey of 2021. Sweet, bold, amazing! 🥃🍻
I’m sold. Bought a bottle today. My first Barrell purchase
My wife just bought me a bottle for my birthday, very unique! Different from everything else in the cabinet, in a good way.
Bro, had it today for the first time. Might be my favorite rye whiskey of all time. It's between this, HW double rye brandy cask, and Willett. Thank you for the review!
Drinkin Barrell Seagrass Batch 8 in 2024 🤘🏼

I'm not even halfway through my first bottle and I already have plans to pick up two more. Big fan.
Super excited to try this. I just ordered a bottle today
Your reviews are always top notch bro. Thanks Jason!
Trying to decide if I get another bottle of this or Dovetal.

Interesting review. I always tend to align with your assessments. Waiting for this in NC or VA, but I won’t hold my breath.
We've got in in upstate sc if its worth the ride for you.
Outstanding review as ever. Just got this and I'll crack it tonight.

I just tried Barrell Dovetail the other night and loved it. Can’t wait to pick up a bottle of Seagrass next. Great Review btw 🥃

Have you ever tasted or reviewed Catoctin Creek Bourbon? If not I want to send you some as they are here in my back yard!
Great Video.. is it worth the price? 80$ msrp
I'm fully convinced at this point that rye is the most versatile/best whiskey for aging in various casks (rum, cognac, red wine).
I love this bottle. I think people that also like Irish and some spey side Scotch Whiskeys will love this bottle. I need to go buy another one to stash away.

Still two bottles in the shelf locally. May pick one up.

What’s your thoughts on dovetail?
Really enjoyed it! I got like a pineapple, coconut, upside down cake. I’m not huge into super sweet but thought this was delicious!
The last half of my dovetail is sweet (wine & rum) and smooth no alcohol bite like when I first opened it ..can’t wait to try that seagrass
Can someone compare this to AE Rye? Im curious to see how this stacks up. If it isn't a fair comparison, what other bottle would be a close taste to the AE Rye?

I have a question, how's he a master distiller if they are blending whiskies together.
Thanks.
Well he was before he was with Barrell
Hey Jason. Great review as always man. Do you think this bottle is worth the $80 it is my way? Sounds like it is far less “hot” than say C920 (I enjoy that) lol….

Worst bottle I have in my collection IMO. Wasn't a fan at ALL !!!!
Perfect timing! Any guess as to the approximate mash bill blend?
So being an american and Canadian rye blend I would think it's a pretty high rye especially with the spice. Canadian tends to be 99%
Damn you! I have walked past this bottle 3 times, but I tend to agree with your takes. I will have to give it a try. I will admit the Armida grew on me over time.
Barrel does an excellent job on their finished blends imo. Armida is good but not great but dovetail and seagrass are fantastic and available
11:53 I’m over it too. Thanks.
Very apropos musical selection, JC! I'll have to give this one a go!
I LOVE this stuff. Weird tho to me and my friends we got no spice at all. Just super sweet and smooth.

@@TheMashandDrum fr, since when are people making bank off Barrell products. I love them but dang.

So fun and interesting to watch, as always! How would you compare this to Angel's Envy rum cask rye?
Completely different. This is so interesting in so many levels. Sweet, savory, spicy. To me angels envy is just sweet.
Sounds like a wild delicious ride! Great review, Jason🥃
Looking forward to trying this one. Great review brother
What bottle did you like better seagrass or dovetail?
Oh man. That's tough. Hmmm...may go with dovetail but seagrass is right there.
I thought the Barrell Armida was really unique and tasty. Sounds like this is also a wild ride. Cheers!
Is it anything like Teeling Small Batch? Whenever I have that stuff I get Jamaican Rum (rotten banana) notes. This sounds similar but with the Agricole funk (grassy)
No. Not anything like that. Maybe the finish flavors slightly but it's a completely different whiskey.
Nice review!! What glasses do you use for tasting? Stolzle?
Copita
@@TheMashandDrum ahhhh thanks. They look a little larger on screen than what I have. Cheers!!
I was always skeptical about this brand, but you might have changed my mind. Can you do Kentucky Owl The Last Rye?
I'd I can find one I will surely do it.
As soon as you mentioned the development totally even in the glass. Let it rust up a bit. Cheers
Love the shape of their bottles but they really need to step up their label game
Huh, I disagree. I love their minimalist style. Stands out to me.
Very unique… sweet then bam … spice … after taste is grass/earthy. Very interesting but enjoyable
Any resemblance to angles envy rye?
No. This has more spice. Angels envy is just candy

Eggnog. It smells like fucking eggnog.
You forgot an L in Barrell. Don’t want you to miss out in searches.
