- U.S. Marine Corps M1A1 Abrams and Norwegian Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tanks in action during live-fire training exercises in Norway, 2014-16.
The two nations conducted bilateral training to improve U.S. Marine Corps capability to operate in cold-weather environments. As part of Exercise Cold Response, the Norwegian troops demonstrate their live-fire capabilities.
Also the Norwegian Telemark Battalion instructs U.S. Marine M1A1 tankers on techniques of driving tracked vehicles in winter conditions on an ice track in Rena.

The diesels sound like...what you'd expect a tank to sound like after watching WW2 movies. Heavy equipment. Which is fine.

The cannon is the first modern smooth barrel cannon developed in the western world after World War II. Initially introduced as the main armament of the German Leopard 2 and later used in the US M1 Abrams and other tank types, it is now used in the armies of many countries. So far it has been installed in two versions, the L / 44 and the L / 55. 120mm. (New cannon Germany Leopard 2A7+. Reinmetall L / 51 130mm )
Licensee of the L / 44 cannon, General Dynamics, introduced it in 1986 as the M256 on the A1 version of the M1 Abrams.
Actually no, that record goes to the soviets. The T62 was the first tank to be armed with a smooth bore gun, specifically a 115mm gun which was also one of the first to be armed with APFSDS projectiles
Edit: actually there was another american tank from the 50s that could fire APFSDS projectiles but that project was a prototype

@@Peter_Gehlen ... it was built for artillery guns and was designed for range, not for anti tank purposes. The germans recognized the fact that the shell was stable and such but never saw it as an anti tank weapon. That honor goes to the soviets.

So the Germans needed no FSDS projectiles for amor piercing to that time. But what you wrote, is not an argument against the fact, that the FSDS projectile was invented by the Germans. That important German developments are worldwide imitated to a large extend to this day, is certainly not a question of honor. Even the Kalashnikov rifle is based on a German model from ww2 (what Kalashnikov himself admitted).

It's like saying that the Chinese invented guns and canons because they where the first to discover gunpowder. Again, they used gunpowder for fireworks, not guns. Yes, they contributed to the invention of the gun by inventing gunpowder, but they themselves wherent the ones to actually make the gun to begin with.

1:04 I can just imagine an enemy column coming out of that canyon and driving right into that platoon of Abrams in dug-in defensive positions and just getting shredded in the ensuing massed volley of 120mm cannon fire. Also impressive to see combat engineering assets in action during a live-fire exercise; add a bit more variety and realism than just tanks and IFV's driving up to firing lines and blasting away at downrange targets.
All this is certainly beautiful and spectacular but with one but : such tactics are more applicable against a weak opponent who has no podderjku air well against aborigenov who do not have the complexes of anti-tank combat, etc. in principle, the last years of the NATO army and they do wage war against the enemy known to be low . Which subsequently has led , I think, is not complete ability of the larger tactical maneuvers against the notoriously strong or equal opponent . therefore, NATO army, and just can show the maneuvers of local clashes

I was a Sheridan Tanker back in 1969... I was deployed to Germany and our heaters NEVER worked. Froze our Az's off in Howenfels and Graf, In 1980 I went to Warrant Officer Academy followed by Flight School. I am still flying EMS Helicopters.. about to call it quits in a month.

both M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 use the same gun. The 120mm L/44. The American version is called M256.

I'm totally cool with exporting Leos to friends and family all around our hemisphere. After all, wouldn't it be cruel to keep our superior arms to ourselves? You just can't expect a peaceful country such as Norway to develop their own armor and those delicious krone feel so much better in German pockets than in those of Americans.

@John Cornell challenger is pretty garbage, the only thing good about it is its armor but other than that its below average, shitty rifled barrel, shitty engine, below average fcs, instead of following modern tanks like the leopard or Abrams the challenger did its own thing, with modern tank doctrine the challenger would be to slow to keep up with faster tanks and as a result would be outflanked.

@zoolkhan Ye, but for example here they are just doing target practice, so I dont see how camo is necessary in that situation...different thing if the exercise actually includes something else.

When I was on vacation in Germany in an area with American military presence, I saw a white M1 once. Well, it wasn't entirely white, they used gray and black highlights to make it less uniform.
Pretty sure that wasn't standard camo, tho. The paintjob looked really bad, almost as if they had used wall paint to do it.
