This is what a keto diet did for my husband back in 2017 - In less than nine months, he lost 81 pounds. Keto worked. In fact, his story was one that was echoed by many back then. Rapid weight loss with inflammatory markers and HbA1c measurements dropping from dangerously high to ideal in a matter of months. Keto success stories are still there but less common nowadays. Did keto suddenly stop working? Did our bodies catch on and say, "wait a minute, you can’t do that anymore."
In this video, we’ll examine what happened to keto and how you can cut through the distractions to recapture the advantage.

It works...for you. As well as for many others I'm sure. It's not a one size fits all thing though. Don't underestimate how much the decrease of 'bad' calories attributed to your gain loss, opposed to just carbs in general. There's plenty of studies that prove Keto is NOT a short cut or a metabolism hack. For most people it's hard to sustain for a long period, and there's always a risk of missing out on some really important nutriants with a restrictive diet like Keto.

Did you start keto while on any medication and did you stop the medication while on the diet? I have concerns that the drugs the doctor has me on might interfere with the diet. Im depressed about this, keto worked well for me but pressure to conform to established “norms” has me bewildered!

      @vetzaaak 5 місяців тому +6

@@NannyOggins Sounds like you might want to check in with your doctor. Cutting out nearly all carbs can be pretty intrusive, there's plenty of studies that explain the risks of dismissing important nutriants. Ask yourself WHY you'd want to go full keto instead of just adapting to healthy and sustainable eating habits. Avoid processed foods, alcohol and excessive amounts of sugar. Make vegetables the center of your diet, and don't consume more carbs than you need. No need to get caught up in any restrictive diets imo, these hypes and hacks are mainly about selling weight loss books/apps.

If you were 103 lbs overweight, had dealt with a life threatening medical condition by taking advice from strangers on social media ("carbs are bad") and lastly think that eating a keto diet alone was responsible for your weight loss, or your current good A1C numbers, you should get help. I had lost ten pounds through not eating a keto diet and had seen a large drop in my A1C. It's because visceral fat keeps your insulin from working effectively. You don't have to be on a keto diet to lose weight.

    • @RobCLynch
      @RobCLynch 5 місяців тому +1

@@dan-qe1tb I do get help. From 5 individual doctors who are not related to each other, nor are they in cahoots with each other. The simple fact of the matter is that I had tried everything to lose weight and everything had stopped working...and I therefore assumed that my metabolism had slowed down, hence no weight loss.
So, when I tried keto with intermittent fasting, I lost the 103 pounds and I have never looked back. That increased the credibility of the 5 independent doctors in my opinion and I deduced that if one thing that they were saying happened to be true, it was quite possible that the other stuff they were saying was also true. But keto was my decision and it worked, so keto is what I chose and there I will stay. The low calorie method of weight loss that you have described used to work for me too, but insulin resistance put paid to that method. So with regard to needing help...I did need help and I got it from 5 docs...there are more...and o got my results...plus it didn't cost me a penny.

Excellent talk Dr.Becky. Nice to hear we'll see Keith back soon too. Keto works but the truth is that it's hard long-term. I've been on since 2017 but I have to confess, it's not been without falling off the wagon on a regular basis. I always claw my way back into ketosis but it;s a struggle. What I consider to be one of the early lies about keto is that "your cravings will go away." This is not true; at least for me. What I have to keep reminding myself is that it's not just about weight loss, its reducing an A1C in the 11s down to a 4.9 measured just last week. It's about saving your life, but nobody should be mislead; KETO works, and is worth it, but it's hard.

@@unabarry2476- some people think of keto as a list of foods when it is actually a metabolic state, and depending on how many carbs you eat, how often you eat, and how metabolically unhealthy you are to begin with, it can take a while to experience ketosis, even when you’re supposedly eating a keto diet.
Also, for some who have gone carnivore, for example, they struggle to ever get into ketosis for whatever reason (too little fat, too much protein, too much dairy) and have to either change some things or go back to more of a ketovore or ketogenic way of eating. Plus, with a ketogenic diet, of course big food has to get involved and create all sorts of products labeled “keto” that can often keep people out of ketosis due to fake sugars, etc.
Bottom line, when people are trying the ketogenic “diet,” they want to get in ketosis and stay there consistently.
From what I’ve seen as far as comments on videos when people say they tried keto and it didn’t work, it’s one of three things:
      1) they didn’t try it long enough to really get the benefits of being in ketosis or to even get into ketosis consistently at all; 2) they were never in ketosis consistently, so similar to 1, but for various other reasons; and 3) they are vegans who are trying to make disparaging remarks about eating meat while looking as tho that’s not what they’re doing.

Great presentation Dr. Becky. Your message in this video is well taken and validates what I found out during my attempt to reverse my own insulin resistance. I initially cut out all carbs 5 years ago and established a time restricted feeding. I immediately learned that I can control my own metabolism reflected by my annual bloodwork and daily glucose monitoring. After eight months of no carbs, I started to experiment by eating certain vegetables and fruits one at a time to see which one allowed me to maintain appropriate glucose levels. This experimentation took a long while to establish because portion size and combinations had to be accounted for as well. Doing this allowed me to reintegrate certain veg and fruit into my daily meal while keeping diabetes at bay. I no longer check my keton levels, but I routinely monitor my blood glucose levels multiple times a day. I initially used the carnivore and ketogenic diet as reference to start from, but now I have a variety of meal preps specifically tailored for me. It's really not important to me anymore if the meals are keto or not, as long as my blood glucose remains at a healthy level. This took a lot of work to establish, but it allowed me to discover the ideal feeding routine that works specifically for me.

This is all so true. When I first started Keto I took it pretty seriously (not Keto police seriously lol) and went from 205 pounds down to 169 pounds in a few months, which was about 5 pounds less than what I weighed in college when I was in very good shape. I felt great. After the first year and a half however, I found myself cheating on occasion, eating a little more than normal (still Keto) and indulging in those "Keto" breads, snacks, etc. In the last 2 years I've gained back about 10 pounds and although I still feel good, it's doesn't feel quite the same (in terms of energy level, focus, etc.). There's really no substitute for being disciplined and burning the same or more calories than you consume, keto or not --- at least when it comes to weight management and finding your ideal weight. The commercialization of Keto hasn't really done us any great favors.

3 years mainly keto. few periods where I allow carps in - but mainly Keto. Lost 15Kg but main reason besides weight loss was to do intermittent fasting to see the effect on an autoimmune disorder. I have had no real relapses for the 3 years and my blood work has improved. Being running on ketone's make the fasting so much easier :-) And taking out all refined carps (or carps in general) has probably also helped. I have started to add in very small amounts of fruit (½ apple on some days and a few berries) but I have no craving for sweets any-more at all. I do a "healthy" keto with clean cuts of meet (mainly organic), lots of leafy greens, eggs, some cold cuts and cruciferous veggies - actually like the stuff.

While I have lost a lot of weight, and I am no longer on insulin or any type 2 diabetes meds, I have had to crack down more so, to much less than 20 total carbs per day. At 65 years old, I assume my body is still healing, so I adjust my diet when needed. In all these years, I have only (slightly) cheated once or twice. Currently, I am cutting out all artificial sweeteners (specifically diet soda). I always say that our bodies are different...what works for someone else might not work for me, and vice versa. My bp went to normal levels after being right below the threshold of hypertension despite me not being particularly overweight. Having reached my goals I transitioned to a "very low carb diet" because the QoL is so much higher if I can order a pizza once a month or not caring abt what my friends make for dinner when I'm invited over. I love how much better my gut became after removing carbs though, biggest upside for a UC guy like me.

Thank you👍🏽I’ve been doing keto/low carb on and off for years…I can say for sure that eating more whole foods, rather than the highly processed and fast foods regimen…I feel soo much better! The moment I go nuts with the social eating protocol , I feel like pure crap, I have more hot flashes, my vision gets more blurry, my face is more puffy and I have more body aches. I’m 62 and i don’t want to accept that getting older automatically means your health should automatically decline…we’ve been fed that crock of crap for centuries. What we eat, what are lifestyle is like, plays a huge factor in how we age and the ailments and/or diseases we encounter on our life’s journey. I’m not saying living the best lifestyle and eating the more wholesome of foods keeps us from dealing with the woes of ailments and diseases, but I know that providing our bodies with the correct nutrients rich foods and supplements help a hell of a lot.

Hello Dr. I started a weight loss journey March of 2023. Did some research on diets/ lifestyle changes and what might be best for me. Decided Keto was best for me because I was pre diabetic. Lost 30 lbs and reversed my diabetes and high blood pressure in the first 4 months then stalled for 4 months. I was intermittent fasting and eating a whole foods diet with no results with fat loss. I was lacking energy and losing clumps of hair too. 😬
I did more research and decided that keto was not sustainable for me. It was a great starting point though. In October 2023 I started introducing whole food carbs back into my diet along with a higher protein and low calorie foods and weight training 3x a week and I’ve lost 7 lbs of body fat. I look less flabby and a lot leaner. This new lifestyle change is sustainable for me and I will definitely keep it up for the rest of my life.
The whole point of this rambling is to let others know that when it’s just a diet it’s not sustainable. You have to change your mindset and think of it as a lifestyle change. I’m a 4’10 Asian female. I started this journey weighing 178 lbs and smoking 1/2 pack of cigs a day. I quit smoking and my current weight is 138.2 with a goal weight of 110-115 lbs and a body fat % of 20. If I can do this y’all can too!

Love the apps. I think I will get Lumen. I also want to get myself a CGM without a prescription. My A1C is 5.5. A few years ago I used a CGM that a patient was no longer using due to upgrades and in a calorie deficit I averaged about 85 for a month and my A1C was 5.0. Now I'm 52.
The issues with keto I've found are that high fat raises fasting blood sugar and insulin unless you get it down low enough to adapt to run on ketones. Replacing "some" of your carbs with fat doesn't reduce total insulin exposure or fasting blood sugar-it can even raise them. The carbs have to get down under about .35 grams per pound of bodyweight and protein can't go way up either since most protein ends up being converted to glucose within 24 hours.

50-75 carbs per day sounds doable for me. Just making a daily meal plan for less than 20 total carbs stressed me to the max...much less trying to eat that way. Thanks for the encouragement that you are doing well eating low carg, not Keto. Diane

Keto got me from an a1c of 9 to 7.5. the last 6 weeks of Carnivore I have improved to an average blood sugar of 125 and still coming down. Once I am completely off of insulin injections and have healed. I will start to reintroduce certain foods . Carnivore has helped me to lose 20 pounds in 6 weeks. No seed oils or vegetable oils. No sugar, no processed foods that contain any of these ingredients.

Thank you, Dr Gilaspy! I think there are a lot of issues with the terminology, and it might be confusing - not just for newbies but also for people who would like to tweak something. Ketogenic has become a bit blurred; you would expect it to be a diet that allows you to maintain nutritional ketosis (nutritional ketosis defined by certain parameters) for a certian purpose (health goals, maintenance). On the other hand, plants are allowed, carbs are quite generous - so I wouldn't identify with it since I don't have any carbs, no plants or plant matter, strictly animal products; and because I am doing it for health reasons and aiming to stay at the high end of therapeutic ketosis, I tweak it by adjusting fat.protein ratios. One could say it is carnivore, or narrow it down to lion - these do not aim for nutritional ketosis, and depending on how much protein they have, they might be on and off ketosis quite frequently. I feel closest to them because I totallu agree on carb and plant elimination; it can be a lifestyle once I am done with my health journey. Then there are the fasters, the most colourful group - that might end up in ketosis by abstaining from food after a wild nigh party.
So which approach is best? Guess it depends on one's understanding how the body works and goals; understanding is the most important part, I think, because only then you can make an informed decision. I moight be wrong but I see carbs and plants as just another recreational drug, similar to alcohol, weed and so on; consume if you want but know the risks and take full responsibility.

I agree with everything you have said here. It will be 6 months on January 24th that I have been on a carnivore diet and I must say is the easiest diet to follow. Meat! Meat! And more meat is the only way to go if you want optimal health in my opinion. I've lost close to 60 pounds and feel better than I have in years at 57 years old. I do have to start exercising. That is something I have not been doing. The times that I've added veg into my diet I have found that it has to be eaten in moderation or the old ailments begin to come back... inflammation... blood levels etc... but if I keep it to once or maybe twice a week it seems to not effect me although I've just been staying completely away from it lately. One thing that I have found that really is helping with my digestion is to eat organic plain yogurt ( balkin style) every day with about half of a cup of organic blurberries. I've been having alot of colon problems on carnivore but not so bad as to make me fall off the wagon so that is why I began eating yogurt with berries and it has really helped me a lot.

just used your discount code to buy a Lumin. your code was even better than the holiday promo they’re doing now. never heard of this device before but was looking into getting a continuous ketone monitor (until i found out it wasn’t available in the US, only. otherwise available worldwide. interesting.) and i was going to settle for a continuous glucose monitor, even tho they creep me out, require a lot of creepy maintenance, & are extremely expensive. so thank You very much for saving me from all of that 😊

    Speaking only for myself:
My challenge was forgetting to do regular intermittent fasting. Though I kept keto/carnevour what was more important was when I ate rather than what I ate. A bit of self-discipline and keto went back to work for me.

I’m so glad I found you today. I have been eating this way of eating for years and lost 100 lbs but only the last 2 yrs I haven’t driven myself off the path. A year ago my doc put me on Ozempic and instead of losing weight I kept gaining. Now I am 20 lbs heavier 😢. The Ozempic also gave me a present of pancreatitis so of course I discontinued it. My blood sugars have been in the 200s while on strict keto with 18 hours IF and resistance exercise. The doc put me on insulin injections and Metformin which I went off of because of sharp pains in my gut and now my fasting glucose is 170ish with dawn phenomenon. I just wish I could find a dr to steer me in the right direction. I really don’t know what to do. I honestly think Ozempic did a number on me tbh.

It amazes me how listening to UA-cam video can influence the human mind. The sales of devices and supplements has skyrocketed because of this. I was tricked into thinking that keto was the answer with no drawbacks and lost a lot of weight fast but the problem was I lost lots of muscle before I realized what was happening.

Keto doesn't stop working - people do. It takes effort, know-how and persistence throughout. People often loose site to what works within the mayhem of excitement. Small changes over time can go either way, and it's important to track progress, but more so to track changes over time.

This makes so much sense. Thank you for pointing this out. I went Keto two years ago and I lost 55 pounds over time. I was surprised at all the Keto foods now available at the store but we don’t buy them. Keto crisps, cakes, bread, etc. If you look at the labels, it’s not real Keto. I think food companies see a big $$$ benefit in labeling something as Keto but buyer beware.
It is definitely a mindset change and I’ve never felt better, eating real foods and not letting myself get bullied by the temptation of cakes and cookies. For me, sugar was an addiction and my gut issues were awful. It took time to break the old habits but I’m 53 and have never felt better. Now, if I can get these pesky hot flashes under control! 😂 Thanks, Dr. Gillaspy. I’m so glad I came across your channel.

The same thing happens with every diet. The processed food companies find a way to still sell us junk foods. Low fat became Snackwells. Atkins became Atkins candies and snack bars and Keto became Keto shakes and cookies.

Great video! The first thing I learned from you was to eat real, whole food. The keto snacks are just keeping our sweet tooth alive, and the big companies are banking on that.
Like you said, put the real, whole food in your grocery cart (and your body). Everyone wants it to be easier, hey folks, this is pretty easy.

All I heard was buy this product and a lot of stuff most people don't understand 🤔. Keto explanation doesn't require big words or overly complicated numbers people don't understand anyways. As time goes on we learn many doctors don't know what the numbers mean because the overall consensus was just an assumption of peers. Fasting works only if the mindset is inline with it working. Without the mind being right its another starvation diet a person doesn't understand. Keep it simple ❤😊 its not hard to understand when its simple.😁

Hi Dr. Becky, just to confirm, I used your link to obtain my Lumen, and, that all worked well, as I am in the UK, it all translated well to a UK Pounds Sterling Discount. Thanks Again for this information and of course all the helpful information within your content. I have been keto/low carb since April 9th, yes, I remember the date exactly, since it has been so successful for me, a life changing lifestyle change, as I am now at the ideal weight, and, all my metabolical markers have moved mostly to optimal or good...that one exception being elevated ldl which I am not so concerned about at the moment, but, continue to look out for evolving research, like the Feldman initiative

Thanks. Looking forward to see Keith on the 26Dec. I had to quit keto, although I love the food/diet (I do not have a sweet tooth). Started keto in 2006 (Atkins) & was only doing it only 1 months as I though it was not healthy, but I felt fantastic & loss lots of weight. In 2011, after reading Jeff Volek's book on low carb living (I also read dozen of other books & keto sounded very good), I went on a strict keto for about 8 years (did not cheat , except for low carb wine 2 ltr/week). I started getting heart palpations from the beginning & got it tested. Cardiologist said that they were nothing to worry about. But it got worse & uncomfortable. My LDL was extremely high (221), but from what I read, I did not think it was important. My cardiologist did not want to do the particle size as it was not that common at that time. Then, I was getting weak muscle & got arthritis so bad, I could barely walk. I was eating extremely well (0 process food, 0 sugar, lots of fish & cruciferous vegs). So I quit keto about 5 years ago & eat lots of whole grain organic food (Med diet), workout 1hour six days/week. Palpitations almost gone, arthritis decreased by 70%, strength is coming back, but gained 50% of my weight back. LDL still high (just started statin). I was diagnosed with "Familial Hypercholesterolaemia" before starting keto & because of that I don't think I should have done keto. I would love to go back on keto, but not until I get a full lipid test done (APO-B, LPa, & particle size). I just need to find a Doctor that is willing to help me.

Great video! I was successful on the Keto diet during the pandemic. I lost 38 lbs and never felt better. My approach was preparing meals at home, eating out and yes, I indulged in Keto snacks and sweet treats. I stopped Keto and gained all the weight back. I began again earlier this month. My approach this time, now knowing more information and being wiser; I meal prep (prepared meals at home). No Keto snacks or treats, I eat lean protein, two vegetables, and a healthy fat. I am satiated after meals. This time around seems easier knowing the mistakes I made the first time around. My goal once I reach my goal weight, is to transition to Keto high protein (weight train) or Low carb.

Good video and advice. in 6 months, in 2020, I lost 70 lbs, to achieve my goal weight of 150 lbs. After achieving 'maintenance weight', I've eased up on the strictness, which is okay (I continue to practice OMAD and periodic multi-day fasts). Yet, when I decided that it was okay to ease up, I've allowed myself to ease up too much, and my weight has been creeping back up. It's time for me to tighten my belt, re-shed those unwanted lbs, and maintain my target weight. It's mind over matter. You have to focus on the goodness of eating healthy. Choices and mental dicipline.

I did Keto a few years ago and lost 80 pounds and felt great. But then I saw my cholesterol went up a bit and with all the negative videos about it stopped keto and went vegan. Ugh!!! My gut went nuts. I’ve been a near prisoner of my home because of uncontrollable diarrhea issues. I’ve missed out on so much and gained back 25 pounds. I didn’t eat junk food. I made my own food and never used processed food. So I decided to go back on keto. I’m 68 and really feel that I had no life on vegan. My gut has settled down and I feel so much better in only 4 days of more carnivore because I’m waiting til my gut is completely healed before adding back in any veggies. I wish I had not let those scary videos affect me. NO DIET is for everyone. I would be the first person to advise this. But find what works for you. And listen to Becky. She’s great. Thanks Becky, I’m back and I really appreciate you. 🤗
