Another great video, MO is 15th KS 16th this year. I agree with cereal rye cover crop, good for the wildlife and soil/ weed suppression. Its a no brainer.
Great info and recap John! You are spot on with the Green forage blend working well in Ag land. I have found that blend to be game on when the surrounding soy beans turn yellow, on our property in West Michigan.
I don't even have that, I got a 10 of an acre of brassica that looks awesome and all I have is a back pack sprayer and a 125 4 wheeler! Alot of work but it can be done if you want it bad enough
Thanks for all the information, really helping me out up here in VT. Question, a problem I have in my clover mix plots is orchard grass. Deer don’t eat it at all. Tried mowing it but it keeps coming back , didn’t want to use spray but seems like I have no choice. What time of the year would be the best time to spray it with clethodim. Keep on keeping on! Chris
I've planted a lot of buckwheat over the years, as a warm-season smother crop. I haven't planted much in the fall, since it dies after the first hard frost. Does it add enough value, in a fall plot, to be worth including? If so, what seeding rate do you recommend, when including it as part of a mix?
Curious why you like buckwheat in fall? Since it's not tolerant to any frost, seems like very expensive seed to die right away. They're saying frost the next two nights here in northern MN. I have buckwheat that reseeded during the summer plot I had summer but it is still very short and not worth anything right now and will just die in the next couple days
What is latest you would top seed rye/wheat/oats in the nothern half of the LP of Michigan??? I am between Oscoda and Alpena. How late would you add a application of fertilizer??
If it’s just rye probably later September this year No rain in sight next 10 Days You can spray N and AP in the morning when dew dries Any time now Up the water rate a little Use 25 gallons instead of 20 for example
Planted my oats and rye late this year but is coming up with no rain. Hopefully will have some green for late season

Thanks John
Once again thanks for a very informative video
Crimson has worked great for me in southern Alpena Co
Eastern NC here, giving oats a go instead of rye this year to see how it holds up. Good luck everyone.
You as well
I wished I had a seed drill. I don't even have a tractor. I use an ATV disc and ATV sprayer. Takes a lot of work and time. It works for me though
Whatever it takes to get the job done 😊

In poor soil I like 30 pounds with some rye and oats

August planting in sandy crappy soil it does great compared to peas or beans as a candy crop

I planted set 1 due to having no time to plant how do you think it’ll turn out. I’m in mid Michigan
Plenty of time!
Yes
With rain 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 and the seed is buried you should be fine.
