    🚩 I'm very pleased to have worked with Dr. Byron Waldron on this project. His research and incredible insight into the Crisis of the Third Century made this series possible. The Crisis of the Third Century was one of the darkest periods in Roman history. By 270 AD the empire had practically disintegrated, but emperor Aurelian managed to string an unprecedented series of military victories to restore the Roman Empire. Dr.Waldron will be releasing a book later this year (2021), titled: "Dynastic Politics in the Age of Diocletian, AD 284-311", so make sure to keep an eye on that.

The Gallic Empire had originally been founded by Postumus, though he was killed by his men when he tried to prevent them from sacking Mainz. The Rhine legions then chose another man, Marius, who was more compliant. Marius was then replaced by another man, who was then replaced by Tetricus. The Rhine legions were out of control.
      Had Aurelian only killed Tetricus, the Rhine legions would have chosen some other leader to lead them and Aurelian would have accomplished nothing except killing someone who was willing to help him out. It was necessary to wipe them out.

      More likely, military commanders decided to kill him because they tired of constant wars, unlike Aurelan who intented to wage another campagne on the East. When Aurelian saved the life of the revolted Gaulic and Palmyran Leaders, it is obvious that legates from these rebellious regions joined his army as well. And they was not loyal to Aurelian.

    Excellent video on Aurelianus campaigns, I hope to see more content on the Middle Imperial period.
    But why choosing anachronistic helmets for Tetricus and some other characters?
    You could have used Niederbieber and Heddernheim helmet types, who were the overwhelming majority during the Severan dynasty and Crisis of the Third Century timeline.

    • @huguesdiceva
      @huguesdiceva 3 роки тому +8

      If some of you are curious about the appearance and equipment of Severan dynasty/Crisis of the Third Century era Roman troops, I recommend:
      -"Roman Infantry Equipment : The Later Empire" by Ian P. Stephenson (it focuses exclusively on the 193-284 AD timeline)
      -"Legions In Crisis, Transformation of the Roman Soldier, AD 192-284" by Paul Elliott
      -"The Army of Maximinus Thrax, The Roman Soldier of the early 3rd century AD" by Dr. Jan Eschbach and Stefano Borin
      -"Excavations at Dura-Europos, 1928-1937, Final Report VII, The Arms and Armour and other Military Equipment" by Simon James (focused almost entirely on the 3rd century AD Roman garrison until the fall of the city in 256)

      -"Ancient Warfare (Dec/Jan 2009) : Rome in crisis: the third century AD"
      -"Ancient Warfare XIV.5 : Breakaway empires of the third century AD" (soon to be released)
      For those who can read in Spanish:
      -"DESPERTA FERRO, número especial XVII : La legión romana (V), La anarquía militar"
      (P.S.: this last one is a BEAST, it has a level of informations and illustrations about the period in "just" 80 pages that is unparalleled!)

If that had existed back in the time of this battle it would have drastically changed things. Antioch seems like a fascinating city to visit.

    Are we 100% sure that Aurelian specifically went to campaign against the Goths in 275?
    There are some sources that claim it was not certain why he headed east, but some others say he was preparing a massive offensive against the Sasanian Empire, to take advantage of their turmoil at home.

    • @byronwaldron7933
      @byronwaldron7933 3 роки тому +2

      It's an interesting controversy. Whereas the Historia Augusta claims that Aurelian was heading east for a Persian campaign, Syncellus and Zonaras refer to the Gothic campaign. The Historia Augusta is more unreliable in general, but Alaric Watson also gives a number of other reasons why the Gothic campaign is more likely. 1. John Malalas tells us that Aurelian was fighting an ongoing campaign in Thrace. 2. We know that Aurelian's successors Tacitus and Florian were also fighting Goths in the region, in Asia Minor. 3. I'll directly quote Watson: 'The literary sources imply, and some even explicitly state, that Aurelian was on the march when the assassins struck. The exact location is described by most of these sources as being ‘between Byzantium/Constantinople and Heraclea’. The order in which the cities are named hints at travel in a westerly direction. This is made explicit in a fragment of John of Antioch. Aurelian’s presence in that area might therefore be explained by the military requirements of his Balkan campaign, and indeed he may have used Byzantium as an operational base. The HA reverses the names of the cities, thereby implying that the fatal march was heading east, towards the Euphrates frontier.' We should also bear in mind that both Probus and Constantine were preparing for wars against Persia when they died, and so the Historia Augusta may well be conflating the fates of these emperors. Aurelian probably would have marched on Persia sooner or later had he lived longer, but whether he was planning on doing so in 275 or 276 is a more controversial matter.

    I think another reason why Aurelian sent part of its own infantry backward to aid his cavalry was to give the enemy an impression that the main body of the army was already destroyed. Afterall, they did not have satellite back then and can hardly know what happens to the battlefield few kilometers away. This act of gamble ended up routing both part of the enemy army at once. Aurelian is someone who only appears every few centuries and it is sad to see such great person killed by petty man and its schemes
