  • Joint press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, 12 July 2023.
The Secretary General praised the President, the Ukrainian people, the armed forces and the political leadership for their courage and determination since the beginning of Russia’s war. “NATO will continue to stand with you for as long as it takes,” he said.
The establishment of the NATO-Ukraine Council is part of a three-part package of support bringing Ukraine closer to NATO. The Council will act as a forum “where Ukraine and NATO Allies will meet as equals, hold crisis consultations, and jointly take decisions,” Mr Stoltenberg said.
The package also includes a multi-year programme of assistance to help the Ukrainian armed forces transition from Soviet-era to NATO equipment and standards and become fully interoperable with Allied forces.
Allies have also reaffirmed that Ukraine will become a member of NATO and agreed to remove the requirement for a Membership Action Plan. “This will change Ukraine’s membership path from a two-step process to a one-step process,” said the Secretary General, adding: “we will issue an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO when Allies agree that conditions are met.” This is “a strong, united message from Allies on your path to NATO membership,” he added.
Mr Stoltenberg further stressed the need for “credible arrangements” to be in place to ensure Ukraine’s security when the war ends, welcoming the plan of many Allies to commit to providing long-term security assurance to Ukraine. “This will help deter any future aggression from Russia after this war ends,” he said, adding that it complements the support provided by NATO.
“The decisions made here in Vilnius mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between NATO and Ukraine. Today, we meet as equals. I look forward to the day we meet as Allies,” Mr Stoltenberg concluded.
    🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
    President Zelenskyy, dear Volodymyr,
Welcome to NATO, it is great to see you again.
Always a pleasure to meet with you.
And it is a true honour to have you here at the NATO Summit.
When President Putin invaded Ukraine last year,
he underestimated the bravery of the Ukrainian people, the courage of the Ukrainian forces, and the determination of the Ukrainian political leadership.
But he also underestimated the unity and strength of the NATO Alliance. NATO will continue to stand with you for as long as it takes.
NATO Allies have provided tens of billions of dollars in support over the past year. And now we have agreed a three part package bringing Ukraine closer to NATO.
A multi-year programme of practical assistance establishing a new NATO-Ukraine council, and the reaffirming that Ukraine will become a member of NATO and removing the requirement for the Membership Action Plan.
Our new multi-year programme of assistance for Ukraine will help you transition from Soviet era to NATO equipment and standards. And will make Ukraine’s forces fully interoperable within NATO.
The inaugural meeting of the NATO-Ukraine council will start in a few minutes. This is a forum where Ukraine and NATO Allies will meet as equals, hold crisis consultations and jointly take decisions.
Ukraine is now closer to NATO than ever before. Allies reaffirmed that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance and agreed to remove the requirement for a Membership Action Plan.
This will change Ukraine’s membership path from a two-step process to a one-step process. And we will issue an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO when Allies agree that conditions are met.
This is a strong, united message from Allies on your path to NATO membership.
We must ensure that, when this war ends, there are credible arrangements in place for Ukraine’s security. So that history does not repeat itself.
I therefore welcome that many Allies will today commit to providing long-term security assistance to Ukraine. This will help deter any future aggression from Russia after this war ends.
And it complements the support provided by NATO.
The decisions made here in Vilnius mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between NATO and Ukraine.
Today we meet as equals, I look forward to the day we meet as Allies.
And again, a very warm welcome to you.

I love his little laugh at 25:31. 😂 That whole part made my day. It's great that he can still make everyone laugh even at such a serious and high-stakes event. Anyway, I hope Ukraine's allies don't waste time on delivering F-16s, long-range weapons, and everything else Ukraine needs to defeat the aggressor as soon as possible. Then Ukraine can get into NATO. But at least having this new council and the new security guarantees are a good start. #standwithukraine 💙💙💛💛💙💙💛💛💙💙💛💛💙💙💛💛

"I need ammunition, not a ride" will go down in history with "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." I'm really concerned about him because he's constantly working and constantly under stress. We can never understand what it's like to be him but I think he has a positive and grateful attitude considering the circumstances. After the war is over, I hope he can have a lot of time to relax and be happy. 🥰

Thank you so much, NATO Secretary General, for the important updates on the positive progress at the Vilnius Summit; that you have provided to the general public today. Your clear and concise delivery of the relevant information, in response to the questions posed, is very admirable and very much appreciated. It gives the world hope when we see NATO evolving and adapting so positively to the changing times we live in now, compared to when NATO was first founded. This today, was positive news to hear.
Thank you to *all* NATO member states who are making such a huge effort to help protect the lives of millions of Ukrainian citizens, ergo us all, while Ukraine's military, in turn, is on the ground fighting to defend and protect us all.
Those Ukrainian soldiers, and all who are defending Ukraine, truly need these reassurances that their suffering, dying, and efforts to prevail as a nation; will never be in vain.
I pray that this will all be a massive boost to their morale in their endeavours.
Please, let us all not forget, that while war rages in a nation, as it has for many of our nations in the past, during those times, while people witness and live through the atrocities and acts of terrifying violence against our nation every day, the 'confusion of war', as my parents used to call it, is bound to make any one of us feel frustrated at anything that, at first, seems to be hurdles that might detrimentally affect the progress and the outcomes of the war that was inflicted upon us within our own countries.
It must be the hardest job in the world, when you have come from visiting men, women, and children, in hospitals, with missing parts of their bodies, and you hope to do everything possible to not have to do that in the very near future. It must be very hard, when you know that while you are overseas doing your best for your nation, many more will suffer this way and die - and you will be the one to posthumously present awards and offer sincere condolences to the loved ones they leave behind. All the while, you have to stay strong of mind.
President Zelenskyy has shown integrity and gratitude in abundance. I am eternally grateful to him for everything he does for my late father's and ancestor's homeland, Ukraine; thank you sir. Thank you, Ukraine.
The toughest part of listening to everyone in and from Ukraine, during this awful war, is when they graciously give thanks and express their gratitude to us all; for our support.
Why that is tough to hear, is because they are thanking us; while Ukraine is defending us all and what we *all* stand for.
It's good manners to say thank you. I know this.
The cost for Ukraine is thousands of irreplaceable lives. Theirs; not ours.
How can we thank Ukraine for this?
I genuinely look forward to the day when Ukraine becomes a NATO member state - it absolutely deserves this as much as we all did since 1945.
    Lest we forget

Everything is to slow and is costing lives. Not enough has been done the free world should be making sure Ukraine has everything ,why don’t we supply jets with volunteers to fly them until Ukraine has trained pilots they are need NOW !!!! Why has NATO ensured membership as soon as the Russians are kicked out of Ukraine ? NATO would not fight a war like this and it’s unfair to expect Ukraine to. In 1994 USA , U.K. ensured their security along with Russia.

The westerners, us, Europe and NATO are united. China and Russia must understand this. Our purpose is a defense coalition not an offensive operative. THe western, NATO and Europe are NOT against Russia integrity but we are against invasions, interventions and intromission of Russia on other countries.

Dear Secretary General Stoltenberg, the free world begs you to not retire before Ukraine's successful end of invasion and joins NATO. Not only have you done a great job of advancing all priorities well, but momentum would be lost or greatly at risk to success, if leadership changes in mid-process. This is about survival of the free world. There is a saying by Abraham Lincoln, 'Never change horses in mid-stream'. Please, NATO leaders, re-appoint Stoltenberg to another term and for as long as it takes to win !

The day Russia decided to violate international law and invade Ukraine was the day Russia guaranteed Ukraine's closer relations with NATO. If Russia doesn't like it they really need to reflect their behavior on the international stage. Russia has practically begged NATO to expand by their bullying behavior towards their neighbors and the result has seen Finland, Sweden and soon Ukraine to move to join NATO.

On those cluster munitions I'd compare it to the trolly problem.
If we deliver these cluster ammunition then there is a chance it will harm or kill Ukrainian civilians some day in the future, this is like pulling the lever in the trolly problem because not delivering these munitions means more civilians will die at the hands of the russian occupiers it's just that these deaths we can say aren't our fault, it would be like not pulling the lever in the trolly problem.
Except that in the real world mess things aren't clean and clear, the trolley has already killed many many thousands of people military and civilian, it's being driven and directed by moscow and we're trying to force this trolly back to peace and away from the battlefield.
I find myself praying for Ukrainian girls in the occupied area, too terrified to sleep, every day hoping they don't encounter a frustrated russian soldier while trying to survive waiting for liberation. And I ask her to hang in there a little bit longer, just a little longer and she can live in a free and safe environment and enjoy life like everyone else does, enjoying the spring, the summer the autumn and the winter. Enjoying nature, the mountains, the rivers, the lakes, the ocean, the forests, the celebration that comes after the war and rebuild a nation for her children.
This war will end and when it is over the survivors will need assistance with many things, but to get there today was a great step in the right direction.
Moscow will lose, it has already lost it now just needs to withdraw.

Lots of diplomatic strategy on stage. I sincerely desire for a long lasting end state that doesn’t involve a NATO & Ukraine in world war 3 with Russia and it’s allies. I definitely support Ukraine’s sovereignty and look to a end state that does not include declaration of world war three.

I will gladly pay a few € in tax if it keeps ukraine from being stomped by a dictator. Would also love for NATO to form a temporary munitions depot for themselves so they can make it cheaper then commercially bought. Can always scalt it down after it isnt required anymore.
