Do Rubber Lug Gaskets Change The Sound Of Your Drum??

  • So sometime in the 80s or 90s Ludwig started to put rubber lug gaskets on all of their drums. I've seen it discussed on many drum forums over the years that these gaskets have an effect on the sound of the drums, specifically the Supraphonic. I decided to a comparison test and the sound of my snare with the both the lugs on and off.

    I agree 100% The first thing I do with a Ludwig snare or any Metal snare that has gaskets is take them off. A huge improvement in sound! I also put aftermarket COB hoops on. Huge difference in sound and they correct the splay.

    I have a Kenny Aronoff signature snare. It comes with gaskets too. About a week ago, while cleaning the snare, I’ve thought what if I’ll put the lugs back without gaskets. Thanks for the video. I will try tomorrow to pull them off. So many things u can do in the pandemic time!))))

    Great video, man. Snare sounds great!!! I need to take my Orange County snare in for MAJOR repairs ..bent lugs, dented hoop, snare "throw" won't tighten down to the wood shell (23-ply) because it's stripped or SOMETHING!!!, broken snare wires....HELL, I SHOULD JUST START OVER WITH A NEW SNARE! HAHAHA

      @@TheMusicRoom1973 well, I I still have my Pearl 14 x 6 Chrome snare that came with my kit. And it doesn't sound bad at all.... maybe I'll just buy some new heads and tune that one up really nicely as well

    I cant hear in video a lot of difference but some friend do the experiment and it works. My doubt is about tension rod angle, without them.

    Hmmm. I was just looking at pics of the Yamaha Recording Custom Aluminum I just ordered and wondering why Yamaha didn't use lug gaskets. They're on the throwoff and butt plate. Nothing on the lugs. It's very possible Yamaha excluded the gaskets due to the sound differences even though the drum looks unfinished without the gaskets. I was planning on making some gaskets when I get the drum so now I'll really pay close attention to any differences with and without lugs.

      @@TheMusicRoom1973 ok. Do you think gaskets would effect resonance on wood Tom and bass drums?

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 5 років тому

      @@userplayeraccount Toms won't be affected in the same way. The wood shell of a tom doesn't resonate in the same manner or at least won't influence the final sound. Not to mention most wood shells are thick enough that you aren't getting any direct sound from the shell resonating. The gaskets help protect the finish and dampen the lugs which IS a good thing. With toms we hear the sound of the heads with a bit of the attack affected by the hoop. The shell controls how the head vibrates and the frequencies the head projects resulting in the final sound. When we have a metal shell that resonates now we have another influence on the final sound.

    Jeff, I have always wondered about the gaskets! I have them on my 100th Anniversary Ludwig Black Beauty 5x14. With them your drum sounded crisper, but I know it wasn’t as scientific as you wanted. But I might have to try taking them off ... did taking them off change the angle of the lugs getting in to the drum or where they sit on the rim. I thought the gaskets were designed to off set that angle and make it easier to tune. Just wondering?

    • @brent3086
      @brent3086 2 роки тому +1

      Thats definitely something to consider. My lugs have a swivel on them so it's fine for me to remove them but if your lugs do not have that swivel do not change them. The unnatural angle could cause tuning issues and the screws going into the drum could get stripped.

    its not effect but affect the sound...just sayin...cause im surely not the only one who noticed the grammar... and im sure it does affect the sound because the lugs wont be isolated from the vibrations of the shell! its common sense right? is it a bad thing? i dont think so...you at least have the choice of with or without and pick the one your prefer! personally i prefer with the gaskets...they eliminate the lugs and tension rods buzzing...i purchased a new lm400 a cpl months ago...and i love its sound and crack on rim shots!!! very articulate snare...i used maple snares for 45 yrs...and this is my first aluminum...i prefer it to brass because it has less ring to it...but i never muffle any of my drum heads and that includes the bass drum! just keep em in tune with their shell's natural tone and both batter and reso in tune with each other usually at their lowest fundamental resonating tone. to the tune of.." here comes the bride" between each tom starting at the floor tom and going up from there...that way you dont run out of range! Keep on drumming everyone!!! rllrlrrlrll!
