Grew up in the american medical system due to bad chronic illness. I was also raised by a career RN. Most nurses I encountered were nasty people. I spent 2 years working at a hospital - the shit your 'caregivers' say about you when you cant hear is abhorrent. I got to hear names, dates, and deacriptions of most patients they had. My mother did this too at the dinner table. Nursing is a profession where your entire job is to lord over people who are at the lowest point in their and are stuck in conditions where they cant fight back. This attracts a certain mentality - like being a prison guard.

First, even after seeing their comment I'm still not seeing the tooth?? Not saying it's not there, it's just super NOT noticeable. They must just be able to spot it because they work in healthcare and want to feel superior and make themself look "smart" by pretending like it's super obvious. (My dental health is also crap for a variety of reasons, so totally relate to being self conscious of people noticing.)

Many common illnesses are a lot more dangerous and potentially severe than you'd think, even for people who seem healthy to start with. Kids also sometimes go blind or lose their lives from chicken pox. People can end up with permanent digestive system damage from a bad stomach virus or food poisoning. The flu alone, with no other complications, can cause lasting damage to the lungs and to someone's immune system. It's dangerous out there. Our bodies do their best, but it's not always enough.

    • @NiciCool

@@jasminecollins897 totally fair. I learned *after* I had noro that I probably should have gone to the hospital for it. It didn't even occur to me at the time - plus I didn't have health insurance so I probably wouldn't have even if I had thought of it. It definitely caused some lasting damage, though (although I'm also not entirely sure what the hospital would have prevented since part of the damage is just the virus attaching to and mutating things in your body)

The golden rule of commenting on someone's appearance is simple : "Don't. Unless you have explicit permission to." For example, you have a friend who told you they were going to the gym to lose weight and gain muscle mass, then, commenting on how they look slimmer is positive because you know that it's the goal. But otherwise, you don't know if that would be triggering someone who previously had an ED (or still is dealing with it). And that's really fucking easy.

    • @5Demona5
      @5Demona5 2 дні тому +34

I also like to use the 10 second rule. If it's something they CANNOT fix in 10 seconds or less, don't say it.
      Decayed tooth? STFU
Something stuck between their teeth? Yeah, but say it quietly and politely.
      Stretch marks? Burns? Scars? SHHHH!!
You got a lil food stain? Yeah sure
Cause if they cannot fix it in 10 seconds, they surely know about it and probably cannot fix it yet.

Also if you do it don't be a extremely sensitive baby that if the person your bullying for their looks does the same.
Also if your for a example an overweight heavy person with terrible fashion skill, I recommend not doing that as you are a massive easy target yourself for just don't open that door.

    • @princeollie1022
      @princeollie1022 2 дні тому +5

@MichaelHolland-r7h The first part, I agree with, but the second part is so uncalled for... ^^' Like, fat people are people. The fact that you see them as easier target says more about you than it says about them. If they are bullying someone, that doesn't make you right to turn it back on them on something they cannot change within 10 seconds. Them being bullies doesn't give you the right to be bigoted as a response. You can fight back, absolutely, but that's just low if you attack them on their weight. And fashion is so fucking personal, who fucking cares if you think it's ugly?! They weren't dressing up for your pleasure anyway, so wtf?!
Also, nobody mentionned fat people so before you try to wiggle yourself out of this, just realize that YOU'RE the one who brought it up. Nothing in this conversation was about that, so that shows a problem that YOU have. Work on it.

      Not only EDs.
I was reading an AMA about a child SA trafficking victim. She said people always comment negatively about how bad her teeth are. But she has issues brushing her teeth because they bring back her trauma of constantly being assaulted orally.
Plus, there's illnesses that cause tooth decay, depression, add/adhd.... Heck, some people just have bad teeth gentically (like me and parents).
And it also goes for weight, height, their hair, their clothes, the list goes on. Stop judging people, especially when you have zero idea what happened to them for them to be that way.

If you're 100% P&T, don't forget your spouse has access to DEA/Ch. 35 education benefits to help pay for college (assuming he'd like to go to/back to college for some further classes). This will also apply to any children you may have, biological, step, or adopted. They also have access to health insurance called CHAMPVA. And a few other benefits that are gated behind being 100% P&T. You should also check on the state level to see what you might qualify for as well for being 100%, as each state can offer different perks as well. Yes I work in a state VA office to help vets file for their benefits. So don't let the tangential benefits you have access to slip by. Too many vets do.

@@AngeloJoeselberg Have you applied for Individual Unemployability (IU)? It's a classification of disability that will RATE you at 100%, even though medically you are only 80%. You need to have a combined rating of at least 70%, AND one of your conditions has to be individually rated at 40% or higher. If your disability cocktail works out to match that, then you could file to be rated 100% due to being unable to work specifically because of your disabilities. If they rate you 100% P&T (Permanent and Total) as a result of the IU claim (which does happen a lot), then you would be entitled to EVERY benefit that comes with being 100% P&T. There is ZERO difference, benefits wise, between medically being 100% P&T, and 100% P&T due to IU. Talk to your local VSO or whoever helped you file your claim previously. Talk to your doctor and see if they will provide a letter saying they don't think you can work, specifically BECAUSE of your service disabilities. That's an important detail.

If you were to interview Caiphas, he would tell you that crucifying Jesus was not only necessary and correct, but that God would have approved of Jesus' death, as well as the deaths of all those who followed him. Many times we had nothing to eat but bread or oats. We were homeless on and off, but we hid it. I remember being ashamed. How f'd iup is our society that a literal CHILD should feel ashamed of being homeless -- when it was the parents and society around them that were supposed to take care of them? There is no shame in struggling and doing your best to survive in an unequal society. What's shameful is to have such a crashing lack of empathy and self-awareness that you try to pull other people down. What's shameful is the people who let this happen to others, do nothing to help, and then judge them.

I had a cracked and decaying molar for a few years, because I had NO MONEY, it was that bad, and I was working full-time. Then I finally was able to go to university in my late 20s/early 30s, and healthcare was required fir students so it was included in the tuition, I luckily had grants that payed my tuition so I basically got my healthcare for free, my last year of uni there was an oral surgeon in the town where the uni was that was doing a special for undergrads of having your wisdom teeth taken out for a total of a hundred bucks outside of our dental premium, I still had enough on my dental insurance so I qualified, did I mention the decaying tooth was a wisdom tooth too?, lol, gah. The surgeon asked if I wanted local anesthetic or full anesthetic, and only local anesthetic was included in the price so I did that, the surgeon I could tell felt really bad about my situation or maybe he was just weirded out, don't know. I was awake while he had to shatter the decaying tooth to take it out, and could feel almost everything when the other 3 teeth were pulled. A few years after this happened I moved to South Korea for a job and met my husband there, he grew up in France, and when I told him my stories of being sick without insurance and no medicine (about 2 years before we met I was out of work for a year and caught strep throat, no money for a doctor or antibiotics, had to stay in bed for 2 weeks, it was horrible), and how actually normal it is in the US, he was horrified, it's one of the reasons we settled down in France and not the States 😂😢

Oomph, replacing silver fillings is actually pretty dangerous, it's why most dentists don't use amalgam for fillings anymore, it's dangerous to remove them because you can get poisoned if you ingest of of the particles. They are fine putting the silver in and it's fine when the metal is hard in the mouth, but removing those kinds of fillings exposes you to ingesting particles, which could poison you. I had a dentist fill in half of one of my teeth on the cheap when I was a kid, as a favor to my dad, it probably should be replaced, but every dentist I've seen since then, in the States, on Korea, in France, will not touch it, nope, lol, they have all said it's dangerous to remove, it's expensive to remove it safely, and insurance doesn't usually cover removing it (even national insurance), they would sooner remove the whole tooth before removing a silver filling, lol. So I'm a bit surprised you're able to get yours replaced.

Edit: on a note of “thoughts and prayers - if it helps, I’ve had to have a lot of dental work, too, and unless your dentist is, like, just a butcher, it’s usually painless and easy for you to recover. If it’s going to be surgery, in all likelihood, it will just be like you fell asleep and then wake up with a new tooth (since it’s easier for the dentist that way) and as far as the procedure goes, it’s one of the least invasive ones, and quickest recovery time. Fingers crossed for you, you got this!

How about how the US largely treats teeth as "luxury bones" unless you're paying for a plan that covers caps, bridges, or even partial to complete replacement plates? Yeah, I'd LOVE to have that conversation. Because as I see it, even if we're just narrowing the focus to VA dental care, it WILDLY deviates from state to state for what is or isn't covered.

I feel you on this I grew up with no health insurance until I was 18. When I was 31 I got viral encephalitis for the second time in my life. However it was misdiagnosed for a year. I shouldn't have lived through it. To save my life I had to be on a medicine that kill the enamel on my teeth, they grew brittle and broke, I had to have all my teeth pulled at 36. I had dentures made that didn't fit me from day ONE! For the last 4 years I have been trying to get a new set made but due to bone loss in my mouth implants are my best bet. However they are very expensive and I am disabled, living on pennies a month. I HATE leaving my home because I don't have any teeth it bothers me so much and makes me feel so terrible about myself. I have had comments accusing me of being a druggie because I have no teeth, had someone tell me they wouldn't dare show their face in public if they looked like me and so I don't. Going out for me is very hard due to my brain injury and other medical issues and having people judge me for no teeth makes it 10 times as worse!

Wow, dental procedures are just the best, aren't they, Nikki? I mean, who doesn't love the thrill of going into debt for a bone graft? I got one too, and let me tell you, it's a real blast. They knock you out and use your own blood to fill the gap. Super fun.
But hey, the real excitement comes when you get the bill and find out your insurance only covers the extraction, not the actual grafting. Because, you know, that's exactly what you want to wake up to after surgery - a hefty price tag.
Despite all this, I'm sending you love and anesthesia-filled dreams, Nikki. You got this! Dental woes are the worst, but you're stronger. I had an implant and two wisdom teeth extractions (top ones), and I'm still standing. Well, technically, I'm still paying off the medical bills.
You're not alone in this. We can commiserate about our shared dental trauma and plan our future dental adventures - like getting those bottom wisdom teeth removed... eventually.

Yep. That's one of my main motivations for graduating college, if I'm being honest. I've never had good dental care (also due to being poor and having a financially abusive father), and I have crooked teeth and discoloration on them as a result. I know they look bad, and it's embarrassing, and I want to get them fixed. But I also know that "good" teeth have been a status symbol in the United States for a long time and "bad" teeth are a common sign of poverty. Because of this, it's actually EXTREMELY classist to point out someone's bad teeth, because it is likely a result of poverty. (Maybe I have some internalized classism to work through, too, idk, but I have always hated my teeth, and it's probably one of the first things I'll take care of when I'm able)

    I have zero teeth now.
I'm 47.i lost them back in 2012 because of a LOT of fuck ups by various medical people and the fact that Medicare didn't cover dental, and while medicaid _did,_ the only place that would take it was Ohio State dental collage...
Here's the background - I had to basically have my hip replaced at 31. After the 3rd surgery, I got MRSA in the surgical wound.
(At this point in time, I had exactly one cavity, filled, from a chipped tooth. I also had had my back 4 molars pushed out by my wisdom teeth, which were in turn removed. But other than that, perfect dental record)
One of the many many antibiotics (or an antiviral, it was over a decade ago) pulled enamel from my teeth.
So, off to the collage I went.
For a YEAR, they'd treat a single tooth, then make an appointment for a month or more later. Until final they conceded I needed faster and better care than 4th year students. I was transferred to the graduate program (people who were already dentists, going for a specialization)
And they took one look at my mouth and decided - I'm not joking, they TOLD me this more than once - they decided I was a Crack addict.
_Nothing_ I did changed their minds - I offered drug tests, I offered to let them strand test me, I brought my medical records which showed it an antibiotic - it. Did. Not. Matter.
They'd find ANY excuse to not work on me, and send me home with nothing done. I ended up back in the hospital for 3 weeks, and the HOSPITAL brought my then- dentist over to do some work, and my surgeon got in a screaming match with him about how I was being treated - nothing changed. They kept blowing me off, literally only doing emergency work when they had no choice, until my teeth were not salvageable. So I'm 47, and I've had dentures for 12 years.
I've never done an illegal drug in my life (though I do think the "war in drugs" is idiotic and I don't care if people want to do drugs as long as they don't hurt anyone) I've never abused a prescription. But I was treated like I _had,_ and that _because_ I had, I deserved no help. Even when they got the full truth (my surgeon eventually visited with the person from infectious disease who had been in charge of my case) and the head of the dentistry clinic apologized - it didn't change how they treated me or that it was _too late_ (though I think them giving me dentures instead of just pulling my teeth and kicking me out was probably because of that visit)
Even if I _had_ been a crash addict, I'm still a person! But the poor, minorities, and those with "issues" like addiction(mental health problems that are untreated, mostly) - the whole dentistry ECOSYSTEM seems to think we're undeserving...
And my GODS is it expensive! And I don't know WHY
