  • An extended walk around the Glencorbet Horseshoe in the 12 Bens, taking in 10 mountain tops over 23km in total with 1,705m of climbing. A wild camp on the summit of Maumonght (602m) with a brilliant view of the setting sun out to he west. Sorching hot weather☀️ made for tough walking and water was at a premium wherever it could be found. Plenty of flying things🦟 to encourage me to keep moving, even if I was knackered😊

    Fabulous Gerry! Well timed aswell as I just sat down for lunch and had the treat of an effortless tour of the Glencorbet Loop from the sofa 👍 I very nearly did this same hike this weekend but changed tack and headed to the Maumturks instead - so I was just across from you (2 weeks later!) Loved the ginger nut stack, the spectacular sunset and the wild life in the Loughs. The mountains looked so dramatic and the blue sky helped show them off! Beautiful video and yet another mountain range for me to explore! All good 🤗

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers Miriam, the Muamturks looked well cool from across the Inagh Valley (as they always do). Have only walked the central section and are on the list (that we both have). I loved the ginger nuts too, perfect with a fresh cuppa😊 Glencorbet is well worth a visit, though the rockier more dramatic circuit around Glencoaghan drew the eye, as did the Owenglin and Glen Eidhneach - both stunning valleys, never mind the mountains above. It looks like we have plenty more visits ahead of us👍

    Such amazing vistas, particularly the views out to the coastline and Islands, to be fair Id be slaughtered in that heat and wouldnt think twice about a wild swim naked of course.. Cracking views to be waking up to. The weather Gods were smiling, maybe even chuckling to themselves. Little piece of trivia, Im barred from Kylemore abbey....

      Cheers Colin, I was slaughtered in that heat🔥 It was 50/50 at one stage about the wild swim and I would have been grand as there was no one else there at all😊 The weather Gods were smiling, though I think they were chuckling with you down in Killarney. I am prepared to wait for another video for you to explain your barring from Kylemore Abbey - I think it would sound better with a crackling fire, good food and good wine😊

    Not too often we have to cool off by a mountain lake in this country, the tropical weather was great, something that is very rare here, great video btw, look forward to the next one

      Cheers Martin, totally agree it is usually how many layers we need to keep the coolness, wind and rain off😊 The ground was very dry and I have never seen it drier up here in the Sperrin Mountains until our recent rain. Those little loughs were a delight to get some fresh water and to cool off💧❄️

      Ah now there's a thing Gerry. I reckon they had some sort of footwear. We often look back and think that the peoples 1000s of years ago had little knowledge when they actually had. Check out the amazing 'Ötzi, also called the Iceman, is the natural mummy of a man who lived between 3400 and 3100 BCE, discovered in September 1991 in the Ötztal Alps (hence the nickname "Ötzi") on the border between Austria and Italy. Nice spot for a paddle, bet that was heavenly! Well done on not falling in 🤭 this range reminded us if the Rhinogs in North Wales, really rugged and stunning! Easy to see why Diamond Hilll was such a popular point too ❤⛰

    Another beautiful video, thank you Gerry. I am sure missing trips back home just now, but that heat looked pretty brutal, like the stuff I have experienced here in Scotland on the hills this last July :). I haven't climbed any of the Bens on the north side, but l remember looking across to those scree slopes from Binn Gabher and thinking they looked ....interesting! What a spectacular landscape it is, and you had it all to yourself, as I did on that last occasion.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому

      Cheers Jim, it was that same heat in July when Ireland was hitting 30 degrees, with barely a trickle of water to be found and parched ground even in the mountain bogs. Likewise, I was looking to the south and thinking they looked very interesting, fantastic mountain profiles. I think Glencoaghan is probably the most dramatic mountain walk I have done in Ireland (so far). Didn't see another person until I reached the heights of Ben Baun which did surprise me given the uptake in hillwalking during Covid.

    One of the best trips I've joined you on gerry. I agree a very shapely range but it has its hidden monsters. Ha ha, that bog land valley sounds like some kind of gauntlet. Good to get up high. Lovely pitch made by that sunset. Wow, you got the conditions right on this one. And what a descent the following morning. Yeah, impressive for sure. Well, good going with the Orange peel to. Take care gerry. Very enjoyable. Mark

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Florin, probably depends on where you are planning on walking. From memory there is a sizeable lay-by near Benlettery Youth Hostel which I have used for a day hike around the Glencoaghan circuit, which might work for an overnight. For an overnight on the Glencorbet circuit I used a new carpark at Lettershanbally Wood on the R344 road through the Inagh Valley, there are also some informal parking spaces in Glencorbet itself which you could easily use for an overnight. Might be worthwhile to pose the question on a forum such as 'Hiking Ireland' on Facebook for a more comprehensive response.
