Gerry I've watched your videos for a while now and that proves it , you are definitely hard-core 💯 . I have spent nights in the hills but always made my way home the next day . Two days hiking and two nights camping is another level 👌 . Loved it . Caught a glimpse of your Jamaica cake , one of my favourites 😍 ❤️
Cheers Mark👍 Most of my trips are one night though have done a few 2 nighters over the past year and they are definitely growing on me👍 It just means bringing some extra food and it opens up a whole difference experience being able to spend that additional time and plan a different route. I rediscovered the beauty of ginger cake on this trip - the ginger nuts have been relegated😊

Your home away from home on the second night looked really good and I'd be the very same about someone rocking up in the night. The bothy was pretty cool and I knew there wouldn't really be anyone about though the mind does its own thing😊 The soles seemed to have held with the superglue so I will keep using them👍

This newly constructed bothy (Tarsaghaun Cottage) is in a much wilder location and was such a cool place to spend the night. There are also a couple of wilderness shelters in the Nephin Begs which are pretty cool too👍

Cheers Jennifer👍 Slightly different from your National Parks though they have along term programme to introduce more native trees and move away from commercial non native forestry and preserve the blanket bog. It was a super trip and I definitely preferred the second night staying in the bothy😊 It is a very quiet place and I was lucky enough to have it all to myself😊
@@gerrymcveigh It’s great to hear about the long term programme! They’ve done quite a few environmental restoration projects in our area and they’re all a great success. Some of the lands in tidal areas that were converted to farmland have been restored. Many Dutch settlers, and others, built dikes and drained the land, but now the farms are being removed. We have the big incentive to protect the wild salmon and the rivers. I’m really happy they’re going to preserve the bogs. 👌🙌🙌😁
Wow that light over Achill was stunning. West coast sunsets are just incredible, would love to explore Mayo some day. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have already taken a few midge bites this year! I think with the warm weather and lack of wind they are joining us early :(
I agree that those sunsets in the west of Ireland are pretty special☀👍 Mayo is a stunning county and it is well worth spending some time exploring all it has to offer. I did see some flying things myself so am expecting them to be back in force shortly🦟😒

The Bothy looks well, we passed it a few years ago (Aug 2020) and it was under construction, we wondered if it was going to be a Bothy or what it was going to be. The bridge is amazing and so unexpected too, I took a video of Dillon shaking it exactly the same as you did!
Cheers Patrick👍 It certainly feels like the remotest summit in Ireland when you are there. The bothy is constructed to a pretty high standard and is in a wonderful place on the Bangor Trail. When I first saw that bridge a few years ago I was amazed at it out in the middle of nowhere - I think it had just been completed then after the last one was washed away. You just have to bounce on a suspension bridge😊

Cheers Niall👍 It was great to go back to a favourite area with a plan to take in new ground and it worked pretty much according to plan, except that I was slower than planned and had to make some adjustments - though that was okay👍 The new bothy is built to last and it was great to spend a night there. The other one would have needed regular maintenance to keep it going after the initial work and it is in a spectacular location, if in a pretty depressing state.

The short section of boardwalk was like floating on clouds after so many km of wetness along the Bangor Trail. It was ginger cake - I took a notion to bring it along and it was like nectar with a cup of tea.😊 Any update on the sleeping bag?

Well, you did the return trip to do the circuit we discussed in the comments after your last Nephin Begs trip then Gerry! Looked a bit brisk up there , but at least the huge cairn gave you a bit of shelter from the NE wind :). I did warn you about that section of the the Bangor Trail though 😳😂. It was bad enough at the end of a long, dry Summer, so I can't imagine how it was last month, even with the odd bit of raised platform like the last bit before the footbridge. Some trail maintenance needed at some point. I guess the high-level horseshoe route I described would have been impractical once you had dropped down to the loughs though. The bothy was nearly complete when I was there, but no doors or windows. Looked very well-built though and I guess it will be well-used by people doing the Western Way, as well as the few hillwalkers who brave the Ballycroy wilderness. I will be back this year and hopefully will manage a few of the Nephins accessed from the south and east. I will use some of your videos for planning reference! Another great video adventure. Thank you.
James, it looked like a good route approaching Slieve Carr from the north and I have to say it was. I had really wanted to camp at Scardun Loughs and then climb Nephin Beg though that was never going to happen with how slow I travel when filming😊I don't think I would go that way again though as the approach from the south is better (from Letterkeen and taking in Nephin Beg). The Bangor Trail was wet though I knew it was going to be and it was okay😊 The bothy was like something sent from heaven after the cold and windy night on the summit of Slieve Carr and it saved me from another cold and windy night - I agree it will be a fantastic place to stay for those passing through on the Bangor Trail or otherwise👍 I will probably be back to the Nephin Begs too at some stage this year😊

It is a fantastic area to explore and the only tip I can give is to properly plan out what you want to do to get what you need from the trip. It can be pretty wet💧 and will have plenty of midges🦟 from April onwards. The new bothies are really cool as are the wilderness shelters if you are planning on staying overnight, though wild camping is pretty cool too😊 A place I am planning to revisit this year too👍
Hey man, when you left Bangor to summit carr, did you cross the open mountain straightaway or go as far as yhe foot bridge before turning off to head up?

The Mountain Shelters are quite cool and would make for a good stay, with a raised wooden platform that would sleep probably 3 people. Brogan Caroll Bothy at the Letterkeen carpark to the south would be a bit too busy for me, though late stay and early rise might not even see anyone else. Obviously plenty of wild camping options too😊

Eddie, it was solid ground that moved underneath and i wasn't taking the chance so backing up and walking around was definitely the preferred option😊

Are there many Bothys around Ireland? I'm quite fascinated by them and think they're quite handy!

Great video but I just can't help but cringe every time you pronounce Nephin "Neh-finn." The correct pronunciation is "Nay-finn"
