My 1460s are now 15 months old. No painful breaking in, no sores or blisters. Buy the boots the right size. Next buy a tub of the Wonder Balsam. Leave the boots where there is some rising heat, airing cupboard or above a heater. Continue to do this for about 5 to 10 days. Result- no breaking in, sores or blisters. My feet were treated to the softened leather for about 8 hours including a walk from Waterloo Station to Oxford Street, London and back to buy a spare tub of Wonder Balsam. Wearing DMs does not have to be a painful process, using the Wonder Balsam as described will prevent sores and blisters. Buying your boots the right size is absolutely essential. Kieron.
Do you have any tips on how to choose the right size? I have a feeling DM's are one of those shoe brands that have a sizing that runs diferently from the rest of shoe brands
I agree with your comments about DM sizing. Find a DM shop, hopefully there is one near to where you live. The shop should be able to ensure which is the right size for you. Remember to buy a tub of Wonder Balsam. Kieron.
surfkroq1 nooo, I did exactly that and got a size 7 and my toes would hit the front of the boot while walking. Size 8 and an insole is probably the best combo
Thanks for the great video. I have an original black pair from the 1990’s that are still going strong! And I recently bought some oxblood 1460’s and can say that the newer boots wear in more easily. I love mine!
Have had my trusty 1460s for over 20 years and they are looking as good as new with beautiful high gloss military finish. They have been worn a lot but cared for regularly. Recently changed original black laces for 120cm green and black flecked laces. They look and feel amazing. Great video, personally I have never used the dm balsam but have occasionally used a high quality beeswax shoe polish to keep the leather supple and in tip top condition.
This video was exactly what I needed. The ankle part is sagging on my newer boots and I thought I ruined them by wearing thick carhartt wool socks trying to break them in. I’ve only worn them a few times so far. Which is stupid but I was paranoid I ruined my first pair of leather boots that aren’t cowboy boots.
As usual, awesome video! I just bought a pair of these as well, 1460 smooth in black. Got them 2 weeks ago, and I am having the creasing as well. I thought it was kind of fast to be creasing behind the toe like they are. Glad to see it isn't just me. Keep up the good work!
I’ve never seen Docs in half sizes, at least not here in Norway. I’m 8.5 (41.5 EU) US in mens in most shoes, and my issue is that they don’t sell them in half sizes here which means an 8 is too small, and a 9 is too big, but depends on the style of the shoe. My 1st pair was an 8, and had it for years. Thought it was broken in, but still it gave me wounds and blisters that resulted in ugly scars on both heels, and it still hurts. I gave up, and bought a pair where the leather is very soft, and has a fleece lining. Way more comfortable, but flimsy, and I prefer how the stiffer boots keeps it shape more😎 But due to the daddy sneaker trend I have now worn kicks all year long. Next time I’ll buy the balm. I never thought it would matter if I did or didn’t. The boot I want now is the Jadon platform boot. I just have to save up, and I don’t look forward to break them in.
There are 2 doc's now, the Taiwanese made ones and the English made. The Taiwanese made ones (generally the ones you find in shoe stores) are thinner leather. IMHO the sole seems softer and wears out faster also. The English ones are made of stiffer/thicker leather. Take a good bit to break in but also last like they are supposed to. As for laces, 550 paracord. Dirt cheap, comes in any color you could want, and strong as a boot lace.
Glad I found this video, I'm usually a size 12 in everything. Had to take these back to get 11's and they were still a little slack at the heel area, had me concerned but this video has put that to bed. Cheers!
@@svltanism Hi Sahara, this is an old account of mine otherwise would've got back sooner. With Doc's I layer up my socks or wear very thick socks - Dr.Marten's socks are great for this and very good generally too - and the fit/comfort is great. If it's thinner socks i'll triple or even quadruple - with a Doc Sock or thicker socks maybe 2 or just 1 pair! With Doc/Thicker socks maybe wear one pair of regular or sport under them - the fit is honestly great - otherwise you may feel slight slack at the back above the heel. I wasn't going to size down to 10 because I believe it may have crushed my toe area too much kinda thing.
Same. My Docs were harder on my feet than my Red Wings, which is surprising. Actually had to wear heel plasters to get through the break-in period. I take that more to be the last of the boot along with the shape of my foot though. Great pair of boots overall, compliments are fairly normal.
As an alternative to the DM issued balsam, I wonder if you've considered Saphir (shoe polish in a tin). It's a bit pricey at £7 but it's been going strong since 1925 when it won the Medialle D'Or in Paris (says so on the tin) - I bought some and not only does it get excellent results, but it also smells beautiful. Try rubbing soap into the backs. Really work it into the leather. Just add a small amount of water to soap and rub with a towel to make it soft. Then apply to the leather. Leave overnight and wipe off.
Bought another MIE pair of 1460’s and they are freaking comfortable from day one- sizing is right, absolutely no pain and no breaking in required. I really enjoyed your video! Very informative and helpful, especially since I'm thinking on buying my first pair of Dr Martens. Sadly I only have access in buying men's Docs, do you believe that their construction may be wider (or genially different) than the womans version? Thanks in advance
i got the smooth leather ones with the really tall soles. they’re so cool looking. but they killll my feet. i’m about two weeks into wearing them. hope they get better
No need. Just rub ordinary soap into the leather. Use a bar of soap as it's cheaper. Wet it slightly then rub against leather. Leave overnight. Should soften
I find the sizing of the made in China boots to be much larger. I had to go down a size and they’re still roomy at the toe and very loose around the tops (God did bless me with twiglet legs, mind).
I tried these on in the store (1460 black women doc martins) and i feel they look shinier in different photos. Do people shine them or does the leather and etc look different when you break them in?
Mine split after seven months across the creasing, but Dr Marten replaced them. I have decided not to wear my new Made in England shoes, will be selling them in due course. Another fab video!
Hi devon, is that 1460 black greasy your docmart ? It would be shine used balsam because black greasy isnt shinny like a 1460 black smooth or 1469 nappa ?
I've had my doc martens for like 5 years, and I still get bleeding blisters on my heels. I think they might be a tad too big and it sucks to not be able to wear them without pain when I've heard people talk so much about how comfortable they are
Nathan Garza same i use my boots for work ive been wearing desert tan hot weather belleville boots for work for over 4-1/2 years never had any problems worked 12+ hours shifts, im going to see if i can buy a pair of these bad boys see how they turn out.
The boot will only wrinkle and rip holes if you don't take care of the leather. Leather requires some maintenance once in a while, but it will last much longer than fabrics
Hi did I choose the right size my middle toe (right feet) is about less than half an inch from the toe edge (6mm). It's onlt been 2 weeks 1 hour walking daily? It's US8, if it's Florsjeim US8 is too big once it's broken in.
Sizing is really important. If you want to work out your size then buy a second-hand pair or try on a friends boots or try on a pair in the store. The more your foot moves in the shoe the more likely it is to rub. Wore my new boots for 8 hours for the first time with a pair of long socks over a pair of below the bone ankle socks for extra padding (total of two pairs at once). I also find it more comfortable to lace my boots as tight as comfortable, it restricts some of my ankle movement but that also means I’m less likely to crack the leather around the toe. Don’t drown your boots in the wonder balm or leather conditioner, over softening the leather will make it less durable and more likely to over stretch and warp. Leather is skin, keep it hydrated but never soak it (especially not with water).
@@emmafarrington6612 sorry i am from Nepal we dont have a store here.. my brother returning to us is buying this for me so i want to be quite sure about size since i cant also exchange them once they arrive
The soles is the issue I have with the NON made in England Martens, they wear out way too fast. I am on a retread as it wore out completely into the air pockets and leather is perfect.
They are the best boots of my life I love them. I live in Playa del Carmen Quintana Roo Mexico, and it is impossible to get a cleaning kit or wax. If they know of any vendor, share information. thanks
I have a question, i recently had the idea of buying a pair of 1460 dr martens, so i ordered a pair that seems to fit me except for 2 things, my heel lifts off the heel of the shoe by like half a cm when i walk, and the shoe seems to a little wide, with the internal side (towards the other foot) of the boot bulging out, when standing, between the ball of the foot and the heel, below the ankle (if that makes sense). This creates a half inch gap between the leather and the inside of my foot. Is this normal or should i go with a smaller size and if that doesnt work out forget about dms completely?
Hi, so in new boots the ankle will be a little loose when walking until "tounge broken in"? Not much, but still? Does it go up and down a bit? Or shouldn't it never be like this?
Do you have the made in england review after 11 months? I want to buy my first dr martens, and I don’t know if i should buy this original one or the MIE one.
Please help me on sizing! I purchased a size down (my normal size is definitely too long). My understand was that 1460s tend to run wider but they seem to be digging into my feet! Length is good but it is the area at the bottom of the tongue/the furthest down eyelet where the horizontal seam is, feels like it is digging into my foot. Is this normal and will breaking them in fix the problem?
I havent experienced that, it does sound like it is a very snug fit on your forefoot. The area that you describe will require a lot of work to break in if it has the constructional stitching of the tongue.. continue with the break in, see how it goes, perhaps talk to a cobbler see if they can stretch?
no offense but do you drag your feet when walking? I've had my pair for over 5 years and ive yet to make a smooth spot.I wear them at least 20 days every month
James Welsh I think he might put too much pressure on that spot. I have miso phobia, so I could never drag my feet but that happens to some of my shoes
Yeah I noticed that all of his Dr Martens reviews has the same sole issues... I'm starting to think that his feet or the way he walks is the real problem..
I was very disappointed in the quality of the leather but the boot is cute. What I am doing is 100% mink oiling from the inside. I realized the plastic type coating,(what a way to ruin the personality of the leather), hard to soften so decided to reach the fibers from the inside out.
Hi there, my first Dr Martens are no Leather Boots. Don’t know how to describe - english is not my first language. Maybe Kind of a shiny synthetic/plastic Material with ribbed Fabrik on the Inside. Wore them First for a dogwalk and had no idea how Bad a Dr Marten can hurt. Had a terrible already ribbed blister on the back of my foot 😢 Since than i havend touched the Docs. Any advice? All I read About Breaking in is about leather boots. Does this also Work for mine? The Model is called 26887 (1460 Gloss Vegan).
Guys I really need an advice! I just got my 1460 dr martens in size 43(UK9) and they feel a bit too big and look massive on my feet. I tried 42(upUK8) before and these are a bit too tight, so the tip of my toes were right against the leather. In both cases the feeling are ok but questionable. I’d prefer to get smaller one because they look much better, but I’m not sure if they get a bit bigger through out the time.
@@andreichiorean4450 I’ve decided to size down so I replaced it to 42, i had to by wax with mink oil to soften the skin and this made a huge different, but still it a bit tight on my toes. Hope it will be possible to break them in soon. Anyway, guys, the one thing which is necessary in this case is to care about the shoes and buying the softener! Don’t rely just on time!
I had some 8s before I sized down to a 7 because the heels were slipping a lot. The 7 still slips a bit when I point my foot down, but it also feels quite tight in the heel sometimes and the toe box. They’re not unwearable and I only got them yesterday for my birthday. Does anyone know if they will settle in a bit with wear regarding the toe and heel?
Can you post an update? I just had them for a couple of days and I’m literally concerned about whether I bought the right size or not.. (Note: I bought the 7 instead of 8 for the same reasons you mentioned)
Abdulrahman 2025 unfortunately due to the pandemic I’ve only worn them about 8 hours over the last 5 months so they’re nowhere near broken in. I got some of the doc marten socks to wear over my regular socks, and that seems to help a bit. I think once they’ve stretched out a little they’ll be fine. Just waiting for the heel to settle takes some time
I’ve now had my old (1989) steel toecap Dr Martens boots for 10 months now, wearing them almost exclusively as a work boot. The tread is still fully visible after around 30/40 wears and similar (30/40) hours of hard walking. You need to give us an idea of how much wear and hard walking you have given these boots in the month you have had them. Surely you can’t be wearing them every day, what with you having over half a dozen pairs of boots that you wear regularly. Are you wearing them once or twice a week, walking for 2 hours back and forth to work? It would give us an idea how much value for money you are getting.
Hi, these are worn 5 days a week; a mile and a half walked commute and then around the office and a mile or so at lunch. I tend to focus my wear on boots that I have purchased in the last 6 - 12 months and normally have 2 or 3 boots in main rotation, that way I get some sort of feel for their overall performance.
I've worn DM's for many a year, some were better than others to break in, but nothing compares to the DM's safety shoes I bought three weeks ago, those mother pluckers have nearly had the best of me, rubbed the heal off my left foot to bits, trying to do the same to the top of my right foot big toe. Thank fook I had weeks holiday booked, gave me a rest from these shoes of Satan, I'm now back at em, I will not be beaten.
Hi Chris a wore doc safety boots for years frree from the company yes theyre a bugger to wear in but used the surgeons knot to keep foot from movement surgeons knot (tie as normal but left over right twice) this stops the lace from slipping and foot from moving good luck fella all the best Dave
David Barber Now then Dave, it took me a couple of moths to get the better of these damn safety shoes, ( not going to buy anymore in the future) also have the safety boots (now worn out) I don't remember these giving me so much grief though. To be fair I've broken / dislocated a few toes in the last twelve months through a hobby of mine 😳 these safety shoes were just too damn narrow for me. Won't stop me wearing my DM boots and no DM safety shoes, all the best sir.
If you're going to get Doc's as work boots, make sure you get the Made in England boots. The made in China ones are cheaper in terms or quality and speaking from experience they won't make very good work boots. Although the Made in England boots are a bit more expensive, they're definitely worth every penny.
Magik If you have a change to try them ob before buying do it they don’t have like middle Sizes that meins they only have 40,41,43 etc. For example....But I personally would go for just 42 cause I have like different sizes in my shoes cause my feet are a different length but I bought the size 40 and I don’t know if you have to put something in your shoes or if you want to just wear them as they are I have insoles and before I tried it with my insoles they fit from the size but were kinda loose at the back of the shoe but with insoles they fitted perfectly

I really enjoyed your video! Very informative and helpful, especially since I'm thinking on buying my first pair of Dr Martens. Sadly I only have access in buying men's Docs, do you believe that their construction may be wider (or genially different) than the womans version?
Thanks in advance
i got the smooth leather ones with the really tall soles. they’re so cool looking. but they killll my feet. i’m about two weeks into wearing them. hope they get better
ben gannon get yourself some Dr scholes. It’s a must, for better fit try straight lacing them
ive had mine for 7 months, ive been wearing them daily for about 6 hours...they still give me bruises and cuts and blisters on the heel :)
Daisy Butcher oh noooo now I’m worried about getting mine
I apply leather conditioner from the inside of the boot. It seems to work better.
These look so good, I love the vintage old school design, I don't really like the models with thick soles
I've had my doc martens for like 5 years, and I still get bleeding blisters on my heels. I think they might be a tad too big and it sucks to not be able to wear them without pain when I've heard people talk so much about how comfortable they are
I wear 7.5 US in vans what size in UK would fit for me?
I put the Doc classic insoles and it really helped size them down and made my boots more comfortable.
How’s the comfort? I’m an 11 ½ US man that is standing a lot at work. I’ll be working in them if I get some.
Ugh, 2 out if 3 of mine were incredibly hard to break in.
So I’m usually a size 11 but I’m scared to get size 11 in these cuz I feel it’ll hurt my toes what do you recommend cuz they don’t have 11.5
Hi did I choose the right size my middle toe (right feet) is about less than half an inch from the toe edge (6mm). It's onlt been 2 weeks 1 hour walking daily? It's US8, if it's Florsjeim US8 is too big once it's broken in.
I wish they still made this exact Doc Marten. Does anyone if they currently make Doc Martens with this shine
Breaking in Docs is as simple as just wearing them. Too many people overthink it.

If they know of any vendor, share information. thanks
Hey Devon were is the long term review on the made in England 1460
Bit of a story there... nothing too dramatic.... but one for another day!
ive also been waiting on an update on those boots.
Yeah, I wouldn’t mind this. :-)
Me to i want a pair of mie but also been looking at solovair
Does this fit the same as the made in England I know they don’t make half sizes.
Just got some doc martens. This same boot. My toe of the boot isn’t smooth like his but havearge waves. Any idea why?
Fantastic boot, wouldn’t wear any other, great video
Hi, so in new boots the ankle will be a little loose when walking until "tounge broken in"? Not much, but still? Does it go up and down a bit? Or shouldn't it never be like this?
Do you have the made in england review after 11 months? I want to buy my first dr martens, and I don’t know if i should buy this original one or the MIE one.
Same problem here
Bruno Njezic if you have the money, go for the MIE. If you’re on a budget, go for the originals. I just got the MIE and don’t regret it at all.
The quality of the shoe has dropped
Yeah I noticed that all of his Dr Martens reviews has the same sole issues... I'm starting to think that his feet or the way he walks is the real problem..
how do you size between these as redwing mocs?
I was very disappointed in the quality of the leather but the boot is cute. What I am doing is 100% mink oiling from the inside. I realized the plastic type coating,(what a way to ruin the personality of the leather), hard to soften so decided to reach the fibers from the inside out.
One month and the sole has already worn spots? That's fast ain't it?
Any update? If i were u i would use the 42's with some thick socks and mink oil on them, you're gonna be just fine in a couple of hours
@@user-kq4hj9jj8e How's the braking in process going my friend, any updates?
Can i use Kiwi shoe polish with these boots?
I usually wear a 9.5 in shoes and they're a snug fit, I ordered these in a 10 because there was no half sizes, should I have ordered the 9?
Same here bro
How’d they fit?
@@miguelfragoso7023 a little big, I should have got a 9 but I put insoles in the 10 and now they fit fine

Good luck man I've been looking for 14 eyelets red steel toe for about a year and I finally found them today and my size. 11
Try useing a surgeons knot on the fifth eye hole this will prevent your foot sliding
David Barber these are shoes not boots, only three eyelets, going to look up this surgeons knot though.
@@chrisgreenwood271 oh god sorry to hear that all the best fella
Would these make a good durable work boot?
If you're going to get Doc's as work boots, make sure you get the Made in England boots. The made in China ones are cheaper in terms or quality and speaking from experience they won't make very good work boots. Although the Made in England boots are a bit more expensive, they're definitely worth every penny.

Anyone know if I can resole mine?
should have tried mink oil!
I am size 43 what size should i get 43?
Im 42,42.5 what size i must take
Magik If you have a change to try them ob before buying do it they don’t have like middle Sizes that meins they only have 40,41,43 etc.
He somebody actually stole your video and uploaded it themselves
TBH, I prefer when they have wrinkles
How should a Care goes into the "Plastic-coatetd" Leather?
Forget Wonder Balsam an all that Stuff.Just walk em

They break in easy but aren't the quality of the ones made in the 1980s
If im a 9 should j get a 8?
Not in my opinion, I say true to size for DMs
5:07 strangely on the vegan ones they come with really cheapy flat laces and no spare pair. Odd 😦
Just bought some new for 40 off Ebay but has made in china Noooo.I had the boots during my youth in 80s so different today i think they wear not that shiney rubbery look. Also hated giving up my old boots for new because it meant fu##en PAIN
Breaking in DMs is a thing of the past.........quality is terrible now, compared to my youth in the 60s and 70s

If you want to see my Red wing resoled check my video Boot the bums out.
What model are those? Initially I thought 977... but the toe cap stitching is different... and have you got a tongue protector / kiltie on there?
Yes a kiltie tongue protector .It's the wingshooter made by irshsetter/red wing. pretty good boot . I got 2 years with the outsole and then red wing resoled it for me with the 875 outsole.
Too bad they make the model 1919 in some sort of leather that looks like plastic.
Dr martens don’t do half sizes
I just bought two pairs three are made in China one is made in Bangladesh.🤣
That crap shiny leather model always breaks on those folding points, this is the worst boot from Martens.
