    Back when I was looking for a peddle drive kayak I was looking into the bonafide p127, Hobie pro angler and outback along with this one. I ended up purchasing the Hobie pro angler 14 360 and honestly after getting my legs accustomed to the drive I have zero complaints with my Hobie. And most places I fish locally are covered in stumps so the maneuverability with the 360 drive can't be beat in my opinion.

    So here's the problem I perceive with the pedal drives. One of the first things you learn in regard to riding a bicycle, is your leg should not be fully extended on the downstroke. Any good bike salesman will insist upon adjusting the seat height and making sure your bicycle frame is the correct size to prevent this. I watched you peddle and even though you adjusted the seat to be a comfortable height and distance from the pedal mechanism, your legs, both of them, were each fully extended on the down stroke. If you spend any time or distance riding a bike, you know that this causes real problems. The repetition of this motion after 3 or 4 hours, combined with my body geometry would cause real issues for me. The other thing I seem to pick up on with pedal drives is that when there is full extension of the legs, the seated part of your body, that would be the your butt, tends to shift a bit right or left on every down stroke, engaging the hips and back which I would prefer remain in a stable/neutral position. I have two Hobies, a 13 ft Compass and a 13-ft Revolution. The Mirage drive is just incredible and more like a healing PT workout. I always feel better for it at the end of the day. Also, hard to believe but before I had my total hip replacement, the motion of the Mirage Drive was just about the only thing I could do without pain. By the way, I'm 75 + years old and although I'm always interested in new technology, the peddle motion on this kayak would certainly cause problems for me.

      @JiminSC 2 роки тому

      I agree, He looked very uncomfortable and it didn't look like he could peddle in the circular motion that makes biking so efficient. I love peddling a bike but seated with your feet above your hips I find the Hobie peddle stroke much more comfortable.

      As a road and mtb cyclist, I agree with everything blueeyedjack stated. I also think their pedal drive cycling consultant overlook a couple of fundamental design features. First, the pedals should have an optional toe strap/cage to utilize the full motion pedal efficiency. Second and I think the biggest design flaw of all pedal drive kayak is the seat position for pedaling vs for normal seating during fishing. You need to be reclined like an F1 driver such that most or your body weight is on your lower back so that your gluts and hamstrings are free to cycle. Almost all recumbent bikes are set up this way, otherwise, you just using primarily your quads & hamstrings. The obvious problems is how do you switch between the two positions quickly. You can't IMO since you still need to propel the kayak to maneuver while fishing.

    Honestly I’ve tried pedal kayaks and tried to not join the hobie club but nothing beats the mirage drive. It’s so versatile. Plus hobies sell on a used market faster than any other kayak I’m seeing. Cause my current kayak I’m trying to sell has been sitting 😂. I’m going to get a pa12 360 soon here and cannot wait.

    • @Aaron-em5xr
      @Aaron-em5xr 2 роки тому +2

      @@MarkFehner would you recommend this for someone 5'4, 145lbs though? I could do with a bigger boat, but going solo 90% of the time, a lighter kayak seems desirable for loading/unloading/storage. I fish/paddle fairly light and minimalistic, as well. A single bag of planos in a bucket, first aid kit and 2 rods normally. So the 14 seems like wasted space, extra weight, and a bigger price tag imo lol. Just trying to think about the stuff I'd even put in all the storage the PA12 offers overwhelms me. I just love the Pro Angler platform. The look, the horizontal rod storage, 360 drive, stability/fishabiliy.
      I'm planning to buy pretty soon, trying to get as much input from peeps as possible. I'm just biased to weight saving and compact form factors. With these things considered I'm wondering if the 14 is still the move...

      Please factor in the "lugability" factor. PAs are great boats but beasts to move around. Throw some wheels on it and try dragging it around the parking lot. Even better, try top loading it 😱Demo the Revolutions (11' or 13') and Compass. Back injuries spoil the party. Bigger is not always better.

    I've got a shearwater 125 and got an x-drive this spring. Biggest issue I have with the pedal drives is the space they take up. The more crap you have in your cockpit, the more snag hazards you get, the more stuff you have to fight with when you do land a big angry fish, the less space you have to get organized. Speaking of organization, that knarr doesn't look like it has a whole lot of storage space. Looks like it cooks through the water, but fishing from it looks like it could be somewhat optimized.

    T.J. I love your setup. Although that knarr is fast, with many options. I think you'd give up some stability, for speed.I've seen it demo with the Torqueedo 1103, and she was at 7.2 mph. It also had the Minnkota on her bow. I do love the retractable PDL drive into the hull. But honestly, I prefer my fin drive, it's small, light, easy to teather and store, onboard. And the same with my Bixpy. I love to plug the Deck let the bixpy run, qnd rig, setup, qnd have my coffee. And 3.5 to 4 mph with the bixpy is a perfect speed, especially on a kayak. And the trolling motor on the bow can move you just as well. But when you already have a clean, kayak that we all setup, invest with all our add-on's. It's just a good feeling owning your kayak, and she's already paid for. And we all love new toys to add.. 👍 🙏 😎 🎣

    I have an outback. I love it. I'm not sure if I'd like the bicycle style drive. Instant reverse would be nice but that's the only advantage I see with them. I do like how you can bring the prop up for shallow water. I like the horizontal rod staging too. I wish the outback had implemented that somehow. It looks like a nice yak though.

If you are not reviewing a product that has fins , which is the biggest difference between hobie and pedal drives with props. Then you can clearly say , there is no comparison. These prop drives are all over the market , I own two of them , and an autopilot. I can tell you from years of experience , hobie mirage 360 is by leaps and bounds far the superior product over everything OTHER than my autopilot. Nothing tops that in the world of kayaks.
