    I finally got a full set of boppers from Dan. Now I feel halfway decent about breaking into couple of these Hornstone nodules.
    I have to say as far as watching you knapp. I liked the way you used the aluminum billet. Some of your best work was done with it imo. But you've been able to switch back and forth on tools for a long time. You're proficient with all of them.

    That root beer flint is always hard for me...I seem to have a problem hitting it to hard and causing scoop outs...I get used to smacking my local Laurel...and I forget not everything needs beat apart...great video!

    Gorgeous piece! Knife River’s cortex can put up quite a fight. But you persevered. I generally find that the more plant material in the piece the more challenging it will be. It does respond to heat well though. I would start around 400 F. Thanks for posting. :)

    Beautiful piece watched it till the end. I wonder how it shows up in the stats if I start off watching it on my phone and six hours later finish watching it on my television I’ve been doing that a lot for the last couple of years I have been watching you since 2018. You taught me how to nap, you are an awesome person

    Jack I've found a Pestle and a small dime size Stone lying right beside Yesterday Morning both Stones are solid white in color. I was told it's a grinding Stone Tool. 10:02

      The dime sized stone is probably what they call a "game stone". Most likely it was used for gambling games, not as a tool.

    Think I saw a you-tube video recently on the Iceman where he also had a scabbard with 14 or so arrows, only two had flint arrowheads attached so the object must have been a bow, but as you say it was unfinished with no notches, so he may have broken or lost his old bow and was in the process of making a new one, he had been in a fight a short time before and had a bad defensive wound one his arm so may have been trying to escape up the mountain.

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  3 місяці тому

      A bow in the "process of being made" is not usually carried around. Besides, x-rays and a study of the growth rings show that the "back" of the bow is in the wrong orientation. But, yeah, I'll talk more about Otzi in the next video.

    I recently acquired a large quantity of Pedernales chert from a hilltop formation and it is similar to the rootbeer but with thinner cortex and weaker edges. It makes great blade cores and gunflints and I can make pretty nice small, thin points from flat flakes using horizontal punch and pressure, but I'm trying to make slightly larger points (3-4") in earnest now. It is VERY hard and the edges crush terribly. I can make a rough, convex biface okay with a billet but starting to shape/thin like at 5:00 to 12:00 is exactly the stage that is defeating me, I get big almond preforms with stalled edges all around because so much edge is lost with every strike. I can drive thinning flakes across on arrowhead sized pieces and pressure flake after lots of grinding no problem but struggle to do the same on a larger scale. I watched over and over and concluded my stone won't let me do it the way yours did at my skill level even with lots of grinding. I see your point about different mindset for different sizes of workpiece and also for different stages of reduction, but I can't seem to get in the right mindset for dart point or knife sized pieces. Question: Do you think that heat treating the rough bifaces (3-4"x5-6"x3/4-1") would help remove big thinning flakes in the early stages? What about the crushy/crumbly edges, in your experience does heat treating tend to make that worse or better? Last question.....do you want some of this stuff?

      Yeah, I'll try some of that stuff (email: jackcrafty2@gmail.com) Thanks! As far as heat treating goes, the edges will crush easier, but it will also flake easier. Everything becomes easier, including the mistakes (step fractures especially) but once you get the hang of it, you can produce long beautiful flakes as well.

    Have you used solid headed billets

      Yes. They don't seem to drive the flakes as well as a weight-forward bopper.
