So glad you mentioned that you have to build up muscle. So many teachers omit this part. Technique is invaluable of course, but at a certain point you just have to get stronger and that makes it all much easier.
I struggle with speed tremolo picking with string changes for years, and your tip using a closed hand with the other fingers is like a revelation to me ! It's much more easier now, because I can put the right amount of strength on the strings when switching through them at speed ! With two fingers only, the strengh on the string was never the right one on the thinner strings, so I was always kipping notes at full speed ! Thank you very much, I start to enjoy playing Ea lords of the depths by Burzum now ! 👍🤘🙌
Thanks 👍🖤 I am playing with two fingers for years. It works well, but is exhausting and I tend to rest the other fingers on the guitar. Great that you showed your technique in detail, will surely help. 👏
great video. I can pick using my wrist just fine if it's just on one string. It gets much harder when trying to pick multiple strings. Do you still use your wrist when tremolo picking 2 to 6 strings?
Yes, I still use my wrist. Depends also of what kind of bridge you have on your guitar because for example I tried an Ltd (Gibson model looking) and another one that was a copy of a Gibson and both were unplayable for me because of the bridge. It was impossible to do a good tremolo picking even on a single string.
All good tips, but one tip my Music Therapist gave me was this: “Hold the pick like you would hold a key 🔑 as if you were 🔐 locking or unlocking your door 🚪.” Dude is into both Death and Black Metal BIG time.
Boris, you are absolute beast! Amazing picking speed u have, i got that technicue in couple days, because you explained so well, but i think others are not on your level 😂😌
Hey man, thanks! Glad that you understood what I was saying..i was concerned about the audio and my English but seems that you guys get the message 👊🏻🤘🏻
6:27 it looks like you're picking from your elbow here. Am I seeing it wrong and you're actually using more of your wrist? Looks like your wrist is locked and most of the motion is coming from the elbow.
Agree, and to be fair, you really can't hit more then a few strings when tremolo picking with just your wrist with your hand the way he's holding it. The way I've found to tremolo close to full chords is to keep the last three fingers open on the picking hand, planting the pinky and ring finger on the body of the guitar for stability. The wrist is held loose and the actual picking action comes from your finger and your thumb. Since you have a point of contact, when you move by your index and thumb, the wrist acts like an axis between flexion and extension. Very little adduction and abdduction.
Hi guy, thanks for the vid. To me there s a big difference between fast picking on one string (which I can do quite well) and two or three strings (where I suck a lot). Any advice on that? How do you place your hand, do you hold the pick differently when fast picking on more strings?
@generalrodcocker1018 mate I do exactly the same now, I don t know if technically speaking it s a mistake but I don t care, the only problem I found by doing this is that sometimes my fingers that hold the pick get in contact with the strings, especially when I try to go faster
Maybe a dumb question, but so is tremolo picking always alternate picking (picking down and then up)? Also, what sim amp do you use in the DAW to get that black metal guitar tone?
@@borist. but never do that annoying style at 2:06. When you stopped playing it sounded like the guitar was f##ing. Call me an idiot, but that's what I've heard.
Never understood how people do that thing with the last three fingers stretched out (what you refer to as two finger picking)...my fingers hurt in that position
might be a bit late but how thick is your pick. atm im using a 0.71mm pick and im afraid to go to a thicker pick like 0.98mm (mostly cause i dont wanna mess up my stings.
Since i started playing thrash/black metal on guitar i had a little trouble getting familiar , but got my mind going like this "okay idk how , make it sound legit" so i went experimenting through how the pick shall be held hand placing blah blah blah and got it right by my self and then i went okay now this sounds how it should be , but my whole fucken arm burns is this normal or what , then i got the answer in your video 😂
It would be helpful to see a comparison of your wrist position/movement with a Hetfield-style wrist position (latter best suited for heavy palm muting rather than tremolo picking).
Man, this technique is killing me, so many songs I left because the technique was played too fast. I think it might be the bridge… because I've tried many times to form a fist when I play, but it doesn't sound very good, so I put my pinky above the guitar.
It can absolutely be the bridge. For example, I can't play Gibson, I HATE their bridge and I'm so sloppy when I try to play tremolo picking (even slowly). Good looking guitar but those bridges..
@@alcalee any song is OK. I started with Marduk because they were my first black metal band and their songs are tremolo picking from beginning to the end basically. Maybe slow the song (u can do also here on youtube) and play with it. When you see that you're able to play the whole song at that speed, speed it up then. It's like gym, it's just about coordination and muscles strength.
@@borist. I have the LTD you are talking about, and it is a metal machine that I can trem pick on like a boss... so I would imagine that is just a matter of technique or comfort. If you've been on those ibanez/Jackson type guitars for a long time, that would explain it
Your technique is very straining. I like to move the pick itself with my thumb and index finger. At least use the wrist like EVH. When you get older you'll have issues with your technique because you're using your entire forearm.
I wonder how much BPM is possible to reach with tremolo picking using only wrist. Do you know maybe? I would be careful with index finger movement. I was using only finger movement for picking - yes.. not even wrist or elbow.. and had some injury. Now after switch to wrist motion I am able to reach only max 120BPM of clean picking. It seems like forarm is faster, but i dont like this kind of movement because feels robotic to me.. I am a bit confused, because see some guys like Andy James that are able to play very fast using wrist only.
I haven't found a better teacher than you when it comes to this kind of thing. Well done, Professor!👌👏
So glad you mentioned that you have to build up muscle. So many teachers omit this part. Technique is invaluable of course, but at a certain point you just have to get stronger and that makes it all much easier.
I'm a typical gym bro and my forearms are quite good but my god, tremolo is burning like fire

I needed another Tryglav video. I needed how to do tremolo picking properly so I'm going to play some Gorgoroth drrrrrrr stuff.
Dude started listening to you on Spotify and hit the follow button. Good stuff. Keep metal alive. From a fellow guitar player. Keep Jamming.
Can’t play with 3 fingers, but curling the other fingers under is huge. Great tip. Thanks⚡️🎸🤘🏻
Thanks for this, man!! Great technique!🤘🏼
I like that song from your first album. I really like the original style of black metal.
Thanks a lot for this. I'd love more lesson on extreme metal specific techniques for riffing and soloing.
You are awesome on the guitar. And I think you are very talented and people are really enjoying your teaching style. Meow 🐈⬛

I thought so too... confusing. Well, if he can do it that way, maybe I don't need to change what I'm doing.
