  • IMPORTANT: Many ferns are poisonous! Be sure you have the right one before eating. The Ostrich fern does not grow wild in all countries, so its wise to research the latin name and see what is written about it in your own language before you head out to forage.
    In this video I teach you everything I know about a great wild vegetable, the OSTRICH FERN fiddlehead (Matteuccia struthiopteris). I go through Identification, taste and preparation.
    Remember to identify the Ostrich Fern properly, as we do have some toxic ferns. And do not forage more than a third of each crown, otherwise you will kill the whole plant.
    Ostrich ferns should be cooked for 15 minutes before you eat them, otherwise they might cause some stomach ache.

    VERY informative. Love that specific identifiers are shown and similar plants are compared and their differences identified, where to find it, how to prepare, cook and store it. Covered everything I needed to know!

      @@Mariaandtheforest The only wild ferns are pretty far away and I have a big yard. Large raised bed gardens I use for perennial vegetables on the east side of the house is full sun, but the sw corner is in dappled shade and low moist ground. I'm going to grow ostrich ferns there.

    i know that u can eat all of the species but u need to cook them at least twice and change water each time, it depends on the species some u need to cook up to 5 times, and the most of chemical that makes u ill its in the protection layer of the plants i haven't tried yet, its just my research from last couple of years.

    Yuuum, and as always beautifully shot / edited Maria! These ostriches look delicious, in the stores here they'll be called 'Fiddlehead Ferns'.. I think I'll go look for some this evening actually.

    I'm having a feed of Fiddleheads tonight. Find them any where in Nova Scotia. You'll see people picking them right from the road side ditch. Lol

    When about can we start picking dandelions (løvetann)? I've read in the papers to let them be because the bees need them, but for how long should we wait :) ?

    • @Mariaandtheforest
      @Mariaandtheforest  3 роки тому +1

      I am not sure. But I think it also depends on the amount. If there is a lot I usually forage some, but if not I leave it for the bees :-)
