The Last LEGO Pirates Theme

  • The early 2010s were a great time to be a LEGO Pirates fan. Between the release of 2009's LEGO Pirates theme, or the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean theme that hit shelves in 2011, fans were treated to some fantastic licensed and unlicensed pirates sets, and later that decade, in 2015, fans received the 2015 LEGO Pirates theme. This set lineup saw the return of Captain Roger Redbeard, along with the Imperial Soldiers, but considering the fact the line came and went relatively fast, it may in fact be The Last LEGO Pirates Theme

    I remember both jang and the brick show both complaining that the 2015 wave felt underwhelming compared to the 2009/10 wave. That’s how I feel too. Happy holidays

    I mentioned it on the other video, this theme and the previous unlicensed pirate theme were lacking in midranged sets. The previous one had a couple, but this one practically had none. It seemed like LEGO's expectation was that if someone wanted a larger set but wasn't ready to drop a Benjamin on the Brick Bounty, they could buy two sets and combine them, which is a good idea in theory and does have appeal, but leaves a huge empty hole in the middle. LEGO themes seem to live and die based on their mid-range sets, and this one didn't even have a real mid-range set.
    I also contest that pirates can only be a simple "pirates vs imperials" theme. If you want to stay completely true to the classic pirates theme, then sure (though even that had Islanders as an additional faction), but there's no reason you can't branch out, adding fantasy elements or maybe exploring piracy in other regions (like how castle explored feudal Japan with the Ninja theme). What about a pirates theme inspired by Chinese Pirate Empress Zheng Yi Sao and her armada of 1800 ships? Another option would be to explore more of an Imperial-focused theme, with the Imperials vs a villainous pirate faction inspired by the Corsairs of Barbary - sure, it's still Imperials vs Pirates, but played out from the Imperial POV and against a completely different kind of pirate from a different part of the world, with their own unique and visually distinct designs. Technically, LEGO Vikings was a pirate theme that explored both piracy in another time and place AND fantasy elements, focusing on Vikings (obviously) facing various monsters from Norse mythology. And there was even the planned Europa theme in the classic era which would have been a crossover between pirates and castle. Long story short, there's a LOT of potential for new ideas in a pirates theme if you're willing to step out of your comfort zone.

    I still genuinely dont think another original pirate theme is out of the cards. While their original output has slowed to a single new original theme every year or so, seafaring in general is a cultural staple.
    Despite this, we dont actually see pirate media that often nowadays, at least not in the mainstream, which means when lego goes for the pirate vibe outside of creator and one-off collector sets, theyll have to be original.
    While i doubt itd be pure pirates, nor as open ended as "classic" themes, im sure at some time this decade we'll see a proper pirate theme.
    Now, the classic theme thats probably never returning is western.
    Westerns are just a culturally loaded topic nowadays.

    In my collection I’d definitely highlight barracuda bay & El Dorado just because of how unique they are compared to my other LEGO originals. I couldn’t put my finger on why until I noticed that it has to do with there being no other pirates related sets in my collection. This theme gives LEGO an excuse to be more colorful than usual especially with the island features like palm trees, parrots, gold, and other treasures.

      @@OurToyWorld I think LEGO is doing a pretty good job with testing the waters by doing individual releases for specific themes. I think it gives LEGO room to experiment with 200+ dollar budget sets in now largely ignored/forgotten themes. I'd wager that LEGO will focus on large space sets after they're doing with Castle, Pirates, Vikings, and all of the mainstay non space related sets.

    5:24 you got something wrong here. Eyepatches were not used to hide a missing eye. They were instead used so that one eye is used to the darkness while the other one is used to the brightness.

    Love this! A very underappreciated year for pirates; the minifigures are top tier and while the larger sets are kinda lackluster the smaller sets are great. Plus the skull and crossed cutlasses flag is a major improvement over the 2009 flag. Shipwreck Defense is one of the all-time best Pirate sets of its size.
    I suspect that the release of the Sky Pirates in the 2016 Skybound Ninjago sets was probably what put an early end to this theme--not a traditional Pirate theme but it leaned so heavily into the piratical motif that it would be hard not to see them competing for shelf space.

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for the support, Lore Escape. I think you make a good point about the larger sets, they are kind of lackluster. Looking back, Shipwreck Defense, Treasure Island, and Soldiers Outpost really are perfect sets. They're detailed, perfect for play, and came with great minifigures. In my opinion Soldiers Fort is kind of mid (when compared to these first three) but considering the fact it was a $30 build, I'm alright with it. Would've loved to get a slightly bigger and more detailed fort for $40-50, but that's just me.
      That being said, the Brick Bounty isn't anything too special. Of course, most LEGO Pirate ships don't deviate from the original design that was introduced in 1989, but it just feels like a cheaper version of Brickbeard's Bounty. You make a good point about the Sky Pirates. Kind of forgot about that era of Ninjago, tbh.
      By the way, I wanted to thank you for your influence on this series. Between your uploads of content from the 4+ Theme on Eurobricks, or your Redbeard series that was quite inspiring and influential, without you this series would not exist. I appreciate all that you have done for LEGO Pirates Retrospect!

    Licensed themes took over, along side many other random themes like dots, dreams, and other wacky sets. Even the city theme isn’t city anymore. The old Lego themes are dead as people only focus on licensed themes or bigger collectors sets.

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  6 місяців тому +1

      I think the main problem isn't licensed themes, but evergreen themes. Both licensed and unlicensed. They've helped create the shelf space issue, and now, we're seeing properties like Castle, Space and Pirates be divided across Evergreen themes. I have some more videos on the channel that go into that issue if you're interested. THanks for sharing your input!

    I own the whole 2013 theme its main problem is its juniorized for a younger audience but most pirate fans were either teens or afol's in 2009 we got new and original sets but then in 2013 it just felt like lazy remakes especially brick bounty

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  6 місяців тому +1

      I definitely agree with the latter half of your comment. I think the 2015 wave definitely had some bangers, but as I mentioned in my response to LoreEscape's comment, sets like The Brick Bounty didn't bring anything new to the table. Is it bad? No, but it is certainly a downgrade when compared to Brickbeard's Bounty.

    The 2015 Pirates theme was unfortunately very weak and that's why it was rejected by many people, like me. The builds were insufficient and forgettable. The ship itself is quite often considered the worst pirate ship ever since it's so rough and uncouth. They clearly didn't give the theme the love and care it deserved and that's why it vanished.
    Thankfully there are now sets like the new Eldorado fortress which prove that there's still hope for LEGO Pirates!
