  • Working in the northern regions of the arctic, you inherit the risk of having polar bears present. At many of these remote locations, you have to be flown in to a base and you will spend up to a six week rotation there. With next to no human activity, the bears have no habituation and will deem us a threat or a food source so it is imperative to having wildlife specialists on location. During the summer months, there are many summer work projects that put staff on the landscape with bears that are summering at these particular locations. As you get later into the season, the summer work concludes and only essential tasks are done outside as you push into the winter months. It is at this time the bears really start to stir as they await the ice to return to the seas and oceans so they can start supplementing their diets with seals. Attracted by the smells and movement will have the bold polar bears summitting to the basecamps to investigate the possibilty of getting food of any kind prior to the ice being in, including human.
    Where this video was taken, I spent five weeks there as the bear monitor, coming across several bears without issue. I can honestly say that with polar bears there is a totally different vibe, they watch and study us, they are trying to learn our schedule and are waiting for a mistake to be made.....we are on the menu. While many found this disturbing and were always uneasy, it fascinated me and made it all that more clear, we are not the top dog on the landscape. Enjoy some footage shot by a few colleagues of mine.

    Up at the Prudhoe Bay oil fields every door has a very strong cage outside. When you leave a building you stop in the cage and take a very good look around BEFORE you exit the cage.

      People really don't understand. Living in a big city in the south with no threat of an animal that really sooner eat you, they just don't get it. Plus, being the arctic, buildings are up on piers and stilts, having to glance under a building for a sleeping or waiting bear, there are so many things one has to do to insure their safety.

      The issue is we humanize the situation and add emotions. In many regions, (most), the polar bears are thriving. All bears are designed to go through this feast and famine cycle. Despite the grim picture they like to paint of bears starving to death because of climate change and reseeding ice, they are incredibly resourceful and in most cases in very good health. Instead they like to follow a old male in his 20's who has come inland to lay down and die to promote their messaging.

    You need a bear specialist to fire a warning shot?

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  5 місяців тому +1

      Warning shots without a pain stimuli of some sort eventually has the bear tuning out the shot. The idea is having someone on scene who understands bear behavior and actually teaches the bear for the next time it encounters a human, the interaction is less dangerous.

    Whoa! No hesitation to try and get in. That is frightening. Do Polar Bears hibernate? I mean they live in snow all the time, how do they know when winter is like brown and black bears?

    • @TheBearGuyCanada
      @TheBearGuyCanada  6 місяців тому +4

      They do not hibernate. When the ice disappears, as does the snow they venture inland to summer. Polar bears live in areas where winters are harsh, and summers are mild to warm, with thaw and melt. They bed down on ice and remaining snow that is inland and do very little. Only a female digs a den and that is to have cubs and for their protection.

      Bear spray is an amazing tool, works on polar bears great. Unfortunately there isn't a ton of it in the arctic due to transportation of dangerous goods. Over the last four years I have seen more and more bear spray being carried in many of the communities in the north. I 've talked to several people that have bear spray stories while on hunts, and the buy in and support for having it is growing, which is a good thing.

    Love bears and they have to eat like us. We can go to the grocery store and buy meat. He’s gotta go looking for it.

    • @IngoSchwarze
      @IngoSchwarze 6 місяців тому

      Not quite: bears do not have to eat "like us". Brown bears have a significantly higher proportion of plant matter in their diet than most humans do, something like 90-95% vegetarian. On the other hand, they can eat extremely rotten carcasses they find with no adverse effect, stuff that no human would even consider touching and that would cause serious illness if a human would go ahead and eat from it. Polar bears, on the other hand, are not only hypercarnivores, but cannot even subsist on just _any kind_ of meat. If a polar bear ate nothing but humans, it would fall ill for lack of nutrients. Polar bear metabolism requires lots and lots of fat, so they need flesh rich in fat, like seal or whale, including the blubber. And Giant Pandas are yet another story: they eat almost exclusively bamboo - preferably bamboo shoots, or bamboo leaves at times of the year where there are no shorts.
      Then again, probably you are right, and grocery stores specializing in the nutritional requirements of bears don't exist.
      Even though a brown bear likely wouldn't object to *anything* they might find in the food department of a supermarket... 🐻

    • @TheBearGuyCanada

      That all depends on the person, I wish I was there. The staff had to lockdown and wait her out, I believe because of my experience and understanding of bear behavior I could of worked with this bear that would deter her from thinking this was where she wanted to be. In most cases in these situations a wildlife specialist is flown in and the bear is dispatched. My approach teaches the bear what is acceptable when there is human-bear encounters and keeps it alive and on the landscape.
