      @James Boney The thing is so much has happened over the past few decades that has led to ruining it so turning back the clock could actually be detrimental.
      I was watching an old school match with Jerry Lawler vs Ric Flair and the things those guys did looked great! BUT slow and precise which wouldn't go over well today. HBK vs Kurt Angle? Masterful psychology. Masterful storytelling. Could "kinda" work today but this current gen of both fans and talent alike is all about explosiveness and hurriedness.
      MMA (as we know it) came out in the 90s, around the same time pro wrestling started suffering various things like kayfabe being mocked secrets exposed, etc. Also at the same time was the current talent growing up watching both pro wrestling and REAL bloodied and brutal fighting and also getting savvy to the secrets. Mix it all in and what we have left is a group of fans not interested in the classic way of putting on a match because they've been spoiled both by the secrets of wrestling plus MMA being as real as it gets.
      Now they want flashy "Anthony Pettis Showtime Kicks" and Ronda Rousey Armbars etc. Now it's not about the wrestler's performances, instead it's about these awesome mind blowing and adrenaline inducing moves that they can't believe someone did. And because of MMA, the more exotic the moves the more excited the fans.
      I think all this together puts us too far gone to be able to bring back the days of old and keep today's fans interested... 😢

    I 100% agree with Jake. Wrestlers should also work their way into slams from holds. Top rope moves should be limited and punches & kicks should mean something. And lastly they need to sell the moves that are done to them. Watch a real wrestling match and you'll see them actually fighting to slam or outmaneuver the other. I feel like that's how it should always look. Just because ppl know it's staged doesn't mean it has to look like it.

    • @jacobhartmann1050
      @jacobhartmann1050 3 роки тому +1

      No, I can see what you're saying for sure. The most I ever saw him do it though was that first run with Flair after he won the strap- and to Bret's credit he has stated in interviews that Flair would call the rollup finish as the ending and it would kill the momentum of the match. Bret thought Ric was killing the finish and Bret's heat on purpose.
      But he did also do that same type finish vs Piper and Bulldog. So...

      Its all about a build up. We do know that it takes Jay Lethal about 10 seconds to set up and execute his "Lethal Injection" which makes the whole move look stupid and fake AF. Finisher should be BELIEVABLE and Fairly Quick. If I have to squat, stick my head between the guys legs, lift him on my shoulders, than reach out and grab him by the neck only to do a Michinoku Driver, thats another BULLSHIT finisher. The should be a build up and a believable finisher. When Chono would kick your head off with Yakuza Kick and then slap that STF that was Believable:-). When Misawa would spike you on your head with TD91. That was believable. None of those moves took long to do and both looked utterly SCARY.

    I LOVED this Wrestling 101 interview with Jake.
    But there was one part that I didn't understand: It's where Jake said that if the fans chant "boring" at a match or at his promo, Jake is gonna say less or just sit and not do anything until the fans chant for him to do something.
    Wouldn't that make the promoter (ie. Vince) upset?

    Jakes totally right here but i think something people miss is guys today are 100 times more athletic then in the 70s. So they could only do 3 moves so they had to excel in othet areas. There is no excuse for people not selling. Another thing is everyone knows its fake. Hell wwe tells you its fake and thats why its so hard to believe in storylines these days cause you know its bullshit. The two guys that were just in the ring hating each other and now they are riding to the next town together. Again wwe has a show about them riding together. I cant buy storys at all now cause you told me they are all fake so at least give me an exciting match so im at least entertained. So 3 moves wont cut it now cause if i wanted to watch fake stories i would watch reality tv.

    Although everything Jake says about ring psychology I agree with, let’s be honest. Today’s wrestling fan isn’t the same as an 80’s wrestling fan. If matches today played out to Jakes psychology the fans would complain more than ever because the time and pacing of the match would be so slow and boring.
    I struggle to watch old school wrestling from the territory days because it’s like watching paint dry.
