    I mentioned once before a problem with the sound. I have amplified stereo sound systems on my computers so I get both channels. It's happening on both home and work. If you watch this video, you come in loud and clear up until about the 4:00 minute mark then your sound drops out and your voice is then picked up by Greg's microphone. This has happened in other videos and broadcasts. It might be a UA-cam thing but it sounds like your microphone is dropping out. You might want to check the cable or connector where they're plugged in. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

    Hey guys, been listening to the show for months now and I have to say you're my favorite gardening Podcast.
    This common is directed to the question around the 24 minute mark regarding cross pollination with tomato varieties. Like you said, the fruits on the plants will all be what they are supposed to be no matter what varieties cross-pollinate but the seeds would be a new variety/hybrid.
    To make sure you collect true-to-type seeds, you need to either space the plants out or isolate a few sets of flowers. Many home growers may not have enough space to be totally sure this strategy will prevent cross-pollination, so I'd like to share a simple tip I picked up along the way.
    In a test garden an extremely simple and effective alternative to keeping the plants apare, which has to be farther apart than the longest-ranged local pollinator's known territory size, is to take 1 or 2 young flower clusters and simply encase them in asimple bag made from mosquito netting. You could really use almost any kind of bug netting, or even a scrap piece of lightweight AG cloth.
    Tie the makeshift bag (or even a decent-looning one if you have those skills) onto your trellis and make sure it is closed until the fruit is set and you are done for seed-saving this year.
    Bigger operations could just net in an entire row but home growers don't need more than a few fruit to save more seed than we know what to do with :)

    I top my large peppers i.e. poblano , cubanelle, bell. Not my smaller peppers like my Tabasco’s. I have found I get stronger plants and more fruit by topping them. This is my 4th year topping and I estimate I get a 40-50% increase in production in my topped plants.

    Hey Travis, I sent a message the other day through the Hoss Tools website. I was wondering if the offset brackets that you guys have for the wheel hoes will work with the garden seeder, or will the handles hit the seed hopper once they are offset? I am thinking of getting the seeder. I really like the versatility of the seed plates and the double disc opener. I want to plant on permanent raised 30 inch beds because we have heavy, poor draining, clay soil. This is for a small, high rotation, market garden. Thank y'all for all the great content, and for making quality tools!

    • @VastCNC
      @VastCNC 5 років тому

      I think you may be referring to the offset brackets that are sold by easydigging.com which is a Hoss reseller.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 років тому

      They should work. The bend on the brackets is not that much, so it shouldn't get in the way of the hopper.

    Hey, guys! If the weather would stay just like it has for the past two weeks here, I'd grow a ton of squash. However, rain tends to start in April and the temperatures stay in the middle to high 80's. I've tried setting out squash plants right after our frost date (Feb 15), I get a few squash to pick, and I'll be dogged if I don't get powdery mildew from Hell! Other than not watering over head, what do I need to do to get a decent crop of squash?

    Audio issues, but nothing volume won't overcome.... just crank it up at 4 minutes, and you will survive until the next show. :)
    Been looking at your BCS tractor... I have an old one had it probably 20 years now... still going strong, but your new one has some nice features mine doesn't. My wheels are locked together, and turning is a pain. When I retire next year, and have more time to expand... I may get a new bigger one.
    Question... I'm new to drip, and the stuff just seems fragile, would it be better to use the heavier tape, and just use it for a few additional seasons?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 років тому

      Travis' mic battery went dead mid-show. It happens. The thicker tape is more stiff. It works well if you're not moving it much. The 8 mil tape is the best option for annuals. At 5 cent a foot, it's not very costly to use several times and replace the following year.

    How long do you leave your tomatoes in the seed trays. Our roots are already poking out the bottom and I'm afraid they're going to try and take hold of the ground. I don't want to stress them by breaking roots or leaving them in the tray too long. Yous look about 6" tall already. How long till you plant?

    • @gardeningwithhoss

      Cucumbers will usually make 10-20 times more male flowers than female flowers. There's probably some female flowers, just hard to find. Try one of these gynoecious varieties that makes all female flowers: hosstools.com/product/stonewall-cucumber/

    I have a tender juicy cucumber-melon variety that is both bitter-free and doesn't cause indigestion. The hotter it is, the faster and better they grow. It's called a Striped Leccese. After years of growing different varieties, this is the very best tasting cucumber I have ever had. If you would like some seed, just let me know your address and I'll send some your way.

      We like to plant as early as we can. Sometimes that can be risky. But once it gets really hot, the pest and disease pressure gets really high. So getting things planted early ensures we get some good crops before it gets too hot.
