I mix my carrot seed with some good potting soil in a small bucket. I shake it up well and sprinkle it all together where ever I want the carrots to grow. This has always yielded a good thicket of seeds that weren't over crowded and distributed well.
i like cover carrots after seeding with row cover, that helps with germination. i took the chanse to plant carrat now at the end of octuber just like you did. hopefully i get some nice winter carrots next spring
I cover the carrot seed with a light sprinkling of earthworm castings. The latter has an X factor that greatly facilitates germination. Since doing this I’ve had no failure.
Kris Oluich interesting. Wonder what that X factor is? We’ve had some worm castings in the past, got them soil tested, and there wasn’t much nutrient content there.

Planted many varieties of carrots in my garden. I saw somewhere that a gardener put his carrot seeds in a shaker( empty seasoning jar), and sprinkled them like pepper. Much easier than pinching and sprinkling with your fingers.
Greg, I did pretty good with mine I agree with you , little water at first then I added nitrogen man did it make a thick green canapy, then I just left them alone
That does help. Many people with raised beds do that and it works great. We don't have a tarp large enough, so we just use the drip tape to keep it wet.
My question is that i just ordered carrot seed from you. I learned from you that it is best to not transplant rather best to plant seeds. How many months to harvest?
Depends on when you grow them. When we plant in October down here and overwinter them, we usually don't harvest til late Feb, early March. When we plant in the spring, the maturity date is usually true to what the packet states.
What month/week did you say you plant your carrots? I must have missed that info. Also, I'm in zone 8 and loaded with fire ants. Did that bottle say "Monterey Ant Control? When I read the directions on it, it says it does NOT control fire ants, and that's what I've got. So, it's been your experience that it DOES control fire ants; and keeping in mind that I need to spread it in my veggie garden, do you use it your veggie rows? Thanks!
shashakeeleh we are in south GA and usually plant our carrots in late to mid October. For the ant control, it does say that on the label. But we have heard of folks using it effectively on fire ants. We don’t have issues with fire ants in the garden because ants don’t like high traffic areas, which is what our garden is.
@@gardeningwithhoss I've got a bed that's 20' by 20' that is not high traffic, and was hoping to find something for it. If Orange Guard, & other stuff doesn't work, then, will try Monterey. Was hoping you had personal experience with it. I really need to kill them off bad. We've had a lot of rain and they are going to town! Thanks!

I've tried growing carrots for 2 seasons now with disappointing results. They are very small, maybe 3 inches for a lot of them. Some also have white spots and a green center ring in the middle. My soil is compost rich and loose about 16 inches or so. I have not fertilized them. I've noticed that some of my other crops have been calcium deficient, like my tomatoes and peppers. Any thought on why I can't grow carrots? Could they also be calcium deficient or missing something else?

Winter carrots are the best. You should get some faster germination with that row cover.

I've heard that covering your carrot seed when it's planted helps keep moisture on the seed. This I turn helps with germination. Any comments on that?

Carrots in containers. What kind of soil can I use here in Marion county Florida? Also, what about DT ( diatomaceous earth) for an't control ?
Carrots like well-drained soil. DE can be used for ants, but needs to be applied prior or right at planting.
