How to survive living with a basset hound: Walt and Buster

- Walt Appel actually wrote a self-published book about the adventures of Buster. Later, Buster authored his own memoir about moving to Boise. Walt says, “(Buster’s) a big talker, but he can’t speak, so I do all the talking.” The two are an inseparable pair in Boise’s East End neighborhood.
Funny thing is , if buster could talk he’d tell everyone about how hard it was to train Walter...
It is so calming to listen to this gentleman. And the basset complements his demeanor perfectly.
This cracks me up. We acquired a Bassett Hound Odie he is stubborn hard headed and mule( ie ). He was a rescue with papers that we took him after 2 previous homes he'll be with us forever and the battle will continue. But we love him unconditionally. Your Basset is so beautifu I hope our years will be as interesting as yours are.
Basset Hounds will stress you out. The man in this video is only 30 years old.
I know this old Basset has set off for new challenges in the sky, but I sincerely hope that you, my friend are thriving and making the world a better place, just by being.
I wish you rainbows, all the way from Belfast.
Oh come on! Bassett Hounds are great dogs. They are loving, friendly, stink to high hell, won't protect you or your property, get long with everybody, humans and dogs, and simply do what they want to do. They are never rebellious, but stubborn. If you want to go right and they want to go left, they will simply lie down until you give in.
Lehmann Peters That is the most perfect description of a basset hound I have ever heard. I have had four of them and will not get any other breed. I love them.
never rebellious my ass ! I have never seen a more spiteful animal than my Hank . If you offend him he will get even ! Not in any mean sense but he will do something to get even .
Exactly lol Mr.Peters
Well mine is indoors of course & mine does not stink, he will let you know when he hears something, mine does pout, my English bull did too, I had a Blk Lab. & he didn't ever pout....I love my fur baby & would do anything for him.
But, you gotta love them basset hounds.
Love your story. I had a basset hound named Fred. He has passed on but I will always remember and miss my Fred.
T Hurst I follow you on Instagram. So much love you had for Fred.
I have a Basset pit mix named fred
@@johnnywooten7642 Basset, pit mix. Wow; How did that work out?
@@thurst6510 he's just a more athletic Basset hound I guess u could say his head looks pit but he has the body of the hound with slightly longer and muscular legs loudest bark iv ever heard and a nose to rival a blood hound
Basset. Slash German shepherd. Was a very smart dog too,,
I grew up with a Basset hound- I learned a lot from her. It's kind of funny, but I copied a lot of her behaviors without realizing it... Sometimes when I get grumpy I make a little Basset hound stubborn grunt noise, lol. I guess in a way at a tender age I learned to see life from my Basset's point of view- she knew how to enjoy life, all things comfy, and take a good snooze here and there, lol.

65 We do choose that same love. Our 2nd Bassett hound is "Flint,' but he is not sharp. His fuller name, since getting to know him these past three years, including Covid-19 lockdown and isolation, is our FlintStone Marshmallow HeavyBottom R/ couldn't be a better host or better best friend. Life is better with a Bassett hound for perspective and friendship... thanks!

😊 eyes-pink-heart-shape. No puppy Bassetts currently available. Long-eared-durn-dog🦋
George you are a wonderful and gentle man, my friend.
The love you have for this cunning canine is evident.
I could listen to you all day long mate, for I bet you have many stories to tell.
You are a rainbow in a grey world George.
I send you best wishes from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and a pat for your crook in the hound suit. : - )
Gus. They called him Gus at the rescue place. I thought that was a weird name for a Basset, that is, until I got to know him. It ended up being a perfect name. His skin condition from a poor diet ended up actually being color dilution alopecia so he was bald wherever his black hair was supposed to be. He was so laid back. I could picture him with a beer and a cigar. He was perfectly Gus. Gosh, I loved that little guy. It used to feel like there were 10 Gus’s because he was always at my feet when I turned around. Bassets are great dogs.
I love listening to the elderly, if the time I have permits lol. They are so wise and nice and this guy seems so chill with life
I have an 18 month old Basset called Rex, he is nicknamed the worlds worst dog 🤣 we adore him, but he is truly the hardest dog I have ever had. My 2yo GSD just sometimes stares at him wondering what the hell is going on lol. Utter pest, but very loved, grumpy old thing xxx
A basset hound named Rappunzel( I called her Bonehead) gave me my life back after being hit by a car and horribly injured.
Lisa Baltzer So sorry hope ur doing better.😁
It's hard to explain a bassett hound unless you have had one.
I've had two Bassets and I love(d) both of them dearly. The one we have now is so gentle natured and funny. They are wonderful dogs.
definitely an acquired taste. Mine is a total ass hole but i wouldnt have it any other way.
They are bassholes.
😂😂
I second that statement . Basset hounds are absolutely audacious and they take some getting used to . The first basset puppy to 3 years old stage i lived through was probably the most incredibly asinine and frustrating 3 years of my life . I have never been pushed to the max in the way my Hank pushed me those first 3 years but through it all I really learned to love this breed and do not ever see myself turning away from Bassets as long as I live . When you get over the fact your dog is a total self centered asshole that loves you they are actually pretty amazing beast . .
@@peanutandoreobasset1859 That name is taken by bass fisherman already it would have to be Asset Hounds but it just doesn't have the same affect .
Hahaha ya gotta love him😂👍❤️
I have a rescue Bassett from a breeder named Daisy!! She absolutely is up at 5 am every morning, playing the same game with the LOUD baying/barking!!! And the neighbor! Wow, I couldn't believe it, sounded like you were talking about my Daisy... You really can't understand how it is to live with a bassett until you've done it. They are very unique and not for everyone, especially those with a busy life. They take their time doing everything and just might take a nap while doing it... But so worth it if it's the right match. Their expressions and gestures are quite amusing but meaningful. If you don't listen, they get really annoyed. But it's ok cause they're sleeping 30 sec later. LOL.
ps....I think people are misunderstanding your sense of humor... It's obvious you love & cater to your Buster.
I have a rescue female Bassett named Pepper. She is the opposite of yours. She will stay in bed with me until I get up, but, she can be a bed hog!! Love her so much! Personality plus. She shares her home with a Siberian Husky, a Boxer and 3 cats all rescues!!
Yes you are right. I always wanted a basset. I had Otis 14 years. He was an eternal wild puppy. I loved him...deep down inside. He tried my patience more than any human. I made it with him til death did us part but it was not easy. Thank you for your post. I hope to be as patient as you are someday.
Some years I met a young woman walking her basset on a leash. I stopped to talk to her and told her my wife and I were currently on our third basset. She looked a bit shocked and blurted out "Oh, you poor man!". Then we both started laughing...
Both of you are so adorable and make great companions for one another!
Maybe play the Odd Couple theme?
Buster reminds me so much of our old Basset Hound, Tortelli, we lost about 2 years ago. I agree that Bassets are wonderful dogs, but take someone who is willing to cater to their needs. We have two rescue Bassets with us now.
TXMEDRGR: I rescued a Basset a few months ago. What surprises me is how their demeanor can be just like terriers: stubborn, willful and pig headed. But, Bassets are a gentle, meandering spirit, too. I'm glad I rescued Patty.
I have had 2 basset hounds. Love them. They do smell. They are unbelievably stubborn but gifts from God
Bassets are stubborn and also clever. They want it their way. But they are also the most affectionate and cuddly dogs. We have two of them and their personalities are totally opposite from each other. But both are affectionate.
"Thank you but no thanks"
Priceless.
totally untrue though . Say thank you and be the proud owner of one of this earths great creatures .
Your Buster looks just like the Buster that I had. He was the sweetest most people loving dog I have ever had. I had to put him to sleep two years ago, and I miss him very much.
I had a beagle named Cody for 11 years until he passed away. He had a lot of the same tendencies. He used to get me up at 5am everyday. I don’t miss that. But I do miss him enormously best mate anyone could ask for
Awwwwwww. LUV you both. And yeah, you're tellin it right Walt. Love Busters's white face. They are the most obstonant, hard headed beasts I've ever owned, and I'm on dog 6, 7, 8. All three bassets and they are my first bassets. I am awoken at about 5 a.m. with whines cuz they gotta go pee. They are enclosed in the bedroom with me so they can't go into the rest of the house and cause havock. Those barks? Good gawd.
But you could NOT ask for a more loyal dog ever. I'm glad you've kept his weight down and kept him active. Once a basset goes sway back, well.......they kinda start going downhill pretty fast, or faster than normal.
Thanks for your story. Now you boys stay out of trouble.........
What a great team.
Talk smack all you want sir. When he's gone you will miss every single thing about him.
A very great Team, Walt and Buster :)
How adorable ! Best wishes to the both of them !
Getting a basset hound was one of the best things that ever happened to me. My dream is to be given another one. In the last two years I had to put two of the down within two months of each other. I plan to get another one or two next summer. I don't have another yet because we are having a bear problem in our neighborhood right now and I will have to install a very high electrified fence first.
Lisa Baltzer black bears won't hurt your hound, I've lived amongst them for quite a few many years. They are as docile as a Basset, so might as well get another.
Did you get another basset hound? 😊i hope so! I love my basset so much, he brings me joy everyday...
LOVE THIS SO MUCH. WHAT A SWEET BOY... I'm a huge huge Animal fan... Love all Animals.
God Bless both of you!
I reckon their stubbornness adds to their charm
My basset had 7 puppies and I kept 3, the entertainment never stopped!
very cute video! I have a Basset and it takes a lot of patients to own a basset!
What a charming, eloquent and caring fellow.
I always thoroughly enjoy how dog people love their dogs in the same, baby-parent relationship!
my first dog was a basset...I was 4..children and bassets go together like melted ice cream and summer.
awwww hes cute! they are not bad dogs at all. used to have one in the family his name was charlie and i miss him a lot. he was stubborn at times haha but i loved him :)
Love the Bassett Hounds!!❤❤❤
My Basset was named Milo. A goofy dog....but rather lovable. He enjoyed Milo-hugs.
My husband married me for my Basset. We love them so much we're looking for another.
I want in . Who is giving away all these basset hounds>?
@@jesusoftheapes you should check out the UA-cam channel Bassetts peepee in baskets. They make huge basset giveaways every month
@@jesusoftheapes that was a joke btw. There is no such channel
my basset was one of the best dogs i ever owned. once my shih tzu is gone, i'd love another basset were i not getting older and them being very strong and heavy dogs.
I've had a Bassett/Beagal, Sherman. I now have a Bassett/Corgy, Dale and a Bassett, Elmer.
Bassetts and half Bassett are a joy and a handful.
They pretty much do as they please with little guilt.
But also come when you need a Bassett hug
Awww he looks like a good ol' boy (the dog I mean.) I'm sure the old human means well but I would NEVER say "thanks but no thanks" when someone offers me their basset hound. I'd say "Thanx alot!" Take care puppy.
He's an old boy!
I have a 3 year old basset. He's wild and stubborn! I have to constantly refill the holes he digs all over the yard and God forbid he goes 5 minutes without getting attention! I wouldn't have it any other way.
Lol!
My beautiful Basset Hound loves me to the moon and back and viceversa. But she has a very strong will!! She is quite picky when it comes to food and I can honestly say she is a little eccentric... And she knows she is!!
So precious ❤
I'm on my 5th one now and I LOVE THEM!!! But I tell people DO NOT GET ONE. Most people can't handle them. They bark, shed, and are impossible to housebreak!!! But I wouldn't trade any of mine for the world!!! I have 2 currently as nd a bloodhound!
Bassets are wonderful dogs! I have two!!
You guys are a pair of National Treasures!
Owning a Bassett is the hardest job you’ll ever love.
My Basset kept me in stitches cuz he was so funny...but boy was he stubborn!
I can tell you love your dog greatly. Yet all the negatives and struggles you describe are some of my favorite parts about my own. One thing I truly debate is the degree of stuborness this breed constantly get. Proper training and time can reduce the stuborn trait dramatically.
Both Adorable!
I had the basset. They are great. stubborn and fun
GREAT VIDEO, WE HAVE 2 OF THESE NOW, WE HAD 4 BEFORE THIS. WE HAVE OUR COUCHES COVERED TOO. THEY ARE COMFORT DOOGIES. WE LOVE THEM DEARLY.PLEASE RESCUE THESE BASSETTS,
I have a Bassett named Buster as well. I love him to bits. He's very hard headed!
is there stubbornness born from their incredible sense of smell which distracts them often. They seem like such lovely dogs.
Mine is a mix with blue heeler.. more Bassett hound though.. 14 yrs old now. Can't think of losing him
How precious!
D King my basset my best friend and companion. I always say he is my sanity.lost other one 2016 and still miss her sooooo much. They have such personality and understands when I speak to him and knows when I a! Not well. Up the Bassets!
Makes me miss my Harry...he was the boss!
Great,video so,beautiful and very sweet, i love, him😎😍🤩🙄😋😘🤣😁
I would not do well without one in my life though . They are all consuming all the time . I wouldn't put up with forced barking though . Mine whines till he get his way and it gets insane sometimes . So really I've just traded barking for high pitched whining until he gets what he wants . What is sad is that I have learned that different whines mean different things and I know what he is asking from the kind of whine he is using at the time . These are very special beasts .
Basset Hounds are the BEST! The only "dog" I want now, though they don't think of themselves as dogs.
I have a basset hound and I will say they're called bassholes for a reason, but honestly id do it all over again
i had 3 Basset hounds Daisy , Lilly & Rose they are the best of all dogs,
I have had My basset for about 9 years and if there’s one thing I’ve learned is when a basset wants something they eventually get it. Trust me. Lol
Good doggie!
Buster is sooo cute and cool
What a sweet pair.
pfffft, someone shows up with a basset right now I double down and say yes twice
Bare the true Masters of the Human Race and we human don't know it
Walt is such a beautiful name and buster fits well
Use a no pull harness that prong collar is awful for a basset hounds throut. My basset hound is one of the best things in my life and I can't imagine not having her.
I completely disagree...they are strong willed but I can't live without one. I actually encourage mine to bark and howl but I can see how some mightn't want that...thank you for sharing this video...I need another hound for sure!
I own a Bassett Hound and wouldn't trade him for anything!!! Period!!! Best personal dog I have ever owned, a healer, a listener, sometimes stubborn, but a very smart dog. You can outsmart him with treats. I completely disagree with this video, if you have a chance to get one, do it. My only regret was I didn't get two!! I lose my Bassett I will be a man in tears...forever.
Cutest video I've ever seen
Get that spike training collar (made for Rottweilers) off him. He's 10 years old, a senior, like you.
Lol, really good!! So are you trained yet?
that is a genuine attack animal if I ever saw one.The very definition thereof.
i beg to differ , by you saying if someone offers you a basset say no.. All basset like people are different in comportment etc. Every dog is special in there own special way.
damn how old is he 15 ?
I envy this guys life
awww
I miss her.
I have a challenging Bassett called Alfie, certainly a character! You seem like a lovely guy and a great team....but why oh why would you put one those collars on him!!??
is that dog wearing a prong collar
Having two basset hounds is like having one arsehole and one tolerable dog. They take it in turns being both.
Buster is one cool hound dog.Just sayin'
hello, our pack leader has just read your book the ferrari basset to us. she laughed alot and said it was just like us! we dont know what she means. love from colchester essex UK. miss piclkes 8, alfred r. fur 8, and hugo 2 and three quartersxxx
How do you ever live without one after have one.
Is Buster still alive?
His dog gets up a 5am? My Basset slept until 11am and she'd bark for me to get her out of bed
Très bon chiens de compagnie, leur problème c'est qu'ils aboient de trop
"A system of survival".Hahahahahaha!
So true. Its like inheriting 4 kids who will never get past 4. That is one lucky canine though. He is just too stupid to appreciate it.No fault of his own. That is a great owner who truly cares about his disaster of a friend.
I have a basset. He’s spoiled rotten! He sleeps in my bed every night. And I love him so much it’s embarrassing.
Lilly fancies Walt :)
