I think it’s actually very good thing for people who like to mod their skx but don’t have professional skills. For me the hardest part is upgrading the movement and dial, with the 4r and new upgraded dial I can stick to the easy parts like bezel crystal and hand sets. I’ve bought 5 different variants, swapping the bezels with each other alone brought me lots of fun.
That “Oh boy!” at the end killed me. Haha.

I'm not a diver so I don't mind the reduced water resistance, and I like the non screw down crown because it makes it easy to give a quick wind up without unscrewing the crown.
Probably a silly bias of mine, but the non-screw down crown kills it for me.
I actually think this colorway looks really good. That kinda chocolate bezel insert and the green hands work well.
You're right, they're smart - they've cut production costs and bumped the prices. A positive attitude is something good to have but to justify paying more for less is a different thing. No thanks, I'm not buying it anymore, the competition has waaaay more to offer. Plus, in opposite to Seiko they tend to offer more for less.

@Armando Sturzenegger endure generations? You gotta be kidding. Maybe that was the case in the past, for sure not now. Shame that UA-cam doesn't allow to attach pictures as I would post, timegrapher outputs or watchtracker stats of my Seikos. Google for 6R15 issues if you don't know what I'm talking about. Switzerland? Take a look at Seiko case backs, and you'll find proud "made in China". Go to Macy's or any other Seiko dealer, take 10 random Seikos and count how many of them wouldn't have bezel, date, chapter ring, indices misalignments, and other QC issues. Then do the same thing with Citizen or any Swiss brand and compare the results. Instead of addressing well-known issues the've bumped the prices. I would say the quality is even lower.
This is not skx replacement!!! This is new 5 sport series. There is no cost reduction here. They created a new product that is inspired by their legendary watch. We don't have a 200m waterproof certificate but for that we get a better mechanism and lots of color options to choose.
Secondly, SKX fans should be happy because their watches will definitely gain value.
For me, the new seiko is a great watch and I will definitely buy it.
Seiko should reissue their SKX quartz diver's with solar quartz movement, I'll definitely buy one.

They will prolly downgrade the movement. I'd only buy if they stayed true to the 7c46
@@pibblesnbits V147 solar quartz movement is very accurate and a very inexpensive movement. The 7c46 movement will be up at the seiko tuna level.
They fixed and upgraded the movement and increase the price. But they didn't add sapphire crystal and solid end links. Whether it's a hundred or 200 m to me is a non-issue.
I wouldn't say $30 retail worth movement is a huge upgrade.
Great watch bought one a couple of days ago on special now it's a old model also bought the similar watch that has a green face .
Yes Seiko was thinking with this one. Seiko didnt really get paid for all the mods out there. Now if they would offer optional sapphire and good qc I'll be happy.

I bought the 79 and I’m going to buy the 57 too. I love the watch, and I got it at Kohl’s for a screaming price... $218 all in.

Nice....I had some “Kohl’s cash” and got the 93 for a mere $159! I happened to have a stored but new dark blue branded Seiko rubber strap and the combo is killer!
New SKX will come in like 5 or so years with all upgrades we would like to see but in price range above turtle and samurai, just my guess. Really smart thing they did with Seiko 5, i was saying that from the start.

Yeah i agree, people should stop talking bad about these models. I mean, they're still great, improved movement, stylish colors, but the price is still lower or at least same with skx (in indonesia).
My hope is seiko can replace the daniel wellington 's hype with these models.

I must admit I don’t think Seiko has offered value in years except the one I own, a Grand Seiko which actually offers incredible value in its price segment. Regular Seiko’s to me don’t feel anywhere near the quality they should at the prices they charge, bracelets especially. The only one that works for me is the new Arnie. But what you are saying about the crown and water resistance is spot on!
I am okay with seiko doing this to the seiko 5 line. I'm not however, okay with them discontinuing the skx.
Hah, I just bought my Hamilton from Mimo! The choco-dial looks rad and it has the 4R36 so you can hand wind and hack seconds; I might have to pick this one up.
I have plenty of Seiko ISO rated dive watches. I like the fact that I can wind these without unscrewing the crown and can swim with them.
Loved this new line up since their release! I’ve got the green one that looks really amazing!

It looks awesome but following the SKX I expected a better product. I'll stick to my SKX007J which is solid as a nuclear submarine. Nice video.
I finally get this color combo! Brown, with the green second hand.....MINT CHOCOLATE! Not my thing, but I get it. Looks like a nice watch, but not likely I'm buying anytime soon. After all, I have three SKXs right now.

I'm wearing my orange boy right now. Had it since last Friday. If there are any Canadians reading this they can be checked out at The Bay. The 4r36 is a huge improvement IMO.

How many people dive ? Not many. I am happy with it being ok in the pool and at the beach. No big deal. I will wait till it comes down in cost .
how many people fly their own planes or go to the Moon? Not many. Let's all tell Omega they don't need the Speedmaster to have a functioning chronograph any more. Some cheap stickers in place of working subdials will be just fine. They'll give it that "chrono style" without the functionality, just like these "dive style" 5KX abominations.
I could see this in a kahki beige... or a variety of khaki colors, more than this chocolate color. Sort of like the Timex Expedition color schemes. Beige face, olive green bezel, tobacco nato strap, etc.
I got the green one with the gold indexes and I am so happy with the watch. It's the skx I never knew I wanted

The thing is, the SKX even with its quirks was a legit dive watch. Yes most don’t dive with it but it’s that you bought a real dive watch. The new 5’s are for show only which is fine but it’s not a dive watch. People that buy a Submariner probably don’t even swim but they bought a watch that is a legit diver and that’s what they wanted. These 5’s are a different type of watch and really are not what the SKX was.

Rob I tested the WR of some seiko 5's seiko underates the wr rating to cover their asses. it wouldn't surprise me if this 5kx can do 200m easy.
I think what many Seikoholics forget or do not realize is that the unapologetic, built-for-purpose tool aesthetic of the SKX is seen as ugly by the casual watch consumer. These new models bridge that gap by providing more stylish options and a more user-friendly experience. My hope is that it eventually train the general consumer to appreciate Seiko’s diver design language and be less intimidated by the divers line.

I think for someone that wanted a sport watch that looked different from the usual black/blue divers, but may not have the tools or skills to do “moding”, the 27+ versions of the new 5KX are going to be a big hit.

I think Seiko was very smart to do this! Everyone was claiming that the SKX was under-performing and over-priced compared to the competition. Dropping the line and opening the 5KS line. The modders will be happy with the fact they weren’t put out of business! All the different color ways is over the top. I think they are testing the water with a whole new business format. The competition had better watch their backs!
My biggest issue with Seiko is their continued use of "hardlex" on their 300+ watches....no reason for it when some "swiss made" watches in similar price points are using sapphire. 600 presage with hardlex...no thanks

On Bruce’s video, the Uncle Seiko, waffle looked delicious. How good would a brown, or indeed a green waffle strap, to match that second hand look? It would be unique, and just gorgeous. Just need to think outside the box, like Seiko.

Great watch. The hate from SKX-lovers should stop. There's room for more watch choices. And since all anyone needs in order to tell time (even in the water) is a Casio G-Shock Square, every other watch is a fashion watch -- which is to say, a piece of art with a purpose. Only important questions are: Is it useful, is it beautiful, is it comfortable, and is it well-made? Bravo, Seiko!
Oh please... a fashion-watch is NOT "a piece of art with a purpose": it's a piece of costume jewellery with moving parts.
The clutching of pearls and complaining is going to look so stupid after awhile. These are going to be a huge hit, Seiko will sell a ton of them, the mod people are going to use the parts. And be honest, guys. The 100m water resistance is there for a reason. You can dive with this. Plus, if you were satisfied with the SKX anyway, you wouldn't have modded the heck out of it where nothing remained except the case.
Hi Rob. Thanks for the video, if you get a chance, can you check if the skx jubilee still fits and Uncle seiko end links, there are conflicting reports.
guess I'm alone here. i dive my SKX. the 5KX is the death of an iconic heritage of tool watches that started with the 62mas.
Still plenty of skx and custom skx also plenty of Seiko divers much better then skx.
@@RandomRobReviews you have a point Rob. but the SKX is the one i started with 12 years ago. i made that choice because of its lineage from the trusted 7002. i still prefer it to the newer Prospex because of the smaller form factor. it works better for me, including on dives, than pieces like the turtle or Sumo, both of which I've also owned but no longer wear. I can live with Seiko discontinuing it. I can't get along with it being replaced by a sparkly fashion watch.

The UA-cam watch influencers who are lamenting the passing of the SKX. It was not a good watch these new 5 sports are brilliant. I have been diving since early nineties and I have never seen a SKX below the surface

I miss the pip, screw-down crown, and other official ISO dive features. Lots of other good features for the price, though. It is what it is - not bad!

The differences they gave us less and they’re charging more...While other watch manufacturers are giving us more and charging less...Something that they may not have anticipated is what I have chosen to do...Instead of making two other Seiko purchases, I Decided to go in with other manufacturers For my purchases...Zelos, Tissot....Booo Seiko....Boooo!
Exactly. Just moved on to Swiss pieces. Seiko is just as good, especially at the higher end. But their new approach of "charging more for less" is getting old fast.
@Armando Sturzenegger Agree totally on Seiko heritage and quality. BUT their new approach is giving us much less value for money. And this 5KX is a clear example. I have been collecting Seiko for 14 years. No more. I'm done with the brand.

No I’m not confused and I don’t need a lesson on the history of Seiko...I’ve owned at least 20 models of theirs over the years. I’m also fully aware of their story and history...thanks...This watch is garbage and they turned it into a fashion watch...It’s selling at retailers right around $300 at this point...So my question to you is “Do you think that that watch is a good value now...and why?”

My grandfather was an italian Swiss watch repairer and use to tell me the amount of times he'd receive expensive watches even the odd rolex to be repaired that had water damage. Basically you should try to avoid wearing these dressy "diver watches" in water even if certified.

i had dust on my dial but i will mod it and then i clean the dial anyways.
I went to check them out and out of the 8 variants that was available in store, 5 had QC issues. Bezel alignment, chapter ring alignment, and one of them had a stuck bezel. I couldn't even turn it
Yes, it's a proprietary Seiko feature, "the quality is there". LOL
My car has a topspeed of 200 km ph. If the new model was more expensive and would only have a topspeed of 100 km ph I would not buy a new one. They are trendy fashion watches. Nothing wrong with that but I like a more tooly watch. Probably go for a Helm with Seiko inside which offers more for about the same price. No more Hardlex for me at this price point.

It's become a fashion watch since it's definitely not a diver watch. I won't be buying any, and I did use my skx007j when I go snorkeling in Hawaii.

5KX?? These Seiko 5s are NOT SKX replacements or even upgrades. You have to go to the Prospex range to get a true SKX upgrade. Did Seiko actually market these Seiko 5s as SKX replacements? I can only assume some UA-camrs are using this “SKX replacement” label as click bait.

mah mam What makes you think it is an SKX replacement? It’s got a similar dial to an SKX? There are no other similarities. Seiko did not market this Seiko 5 as an SKX replacement. Coincidentally these new Seiko 5 models have come out after the SKX has been discontinued. If you want an “upgraded” SKX, check out the Prospex range. This Seiko 5 is a nice looking watch, but there is absolutely no validity in saying this is an actual purpose-built SKX replacement.

I see the perspective you and Bruce have brought up regarding its positives, but overall this is still a poor offering by Seiko. The multitude of colorways doesn't makeup for the fact that Seiko has been charging more for essentially a slightly downgraded piece. I say slightly because a lot of us wanted the NH35. When you buy a Marinemaster, you buy it for its robust capabilities. Now imagine if Seiko made a fashion variant of that. The argument wouldn't be that there are tons of heavy duty divers out there. Your position would be that it is a downgrade. And the same thing applies here. And in the video you brought up the Monster. Now the Monster has its Seiko 5 cousin, but Seiko still offers the Monster for those who don't want the cheaper 5 variant. And they should do the same thing here. If they made this piece and one could find this consistently Grey market for 130-160, as well as making an upgraded actual SKX with an nh35 and sapphire for around 300-350 Grey market, then I would have no problem with that. But Rob what's the incentive to buy this when I can get a Ray 2 for 130 right now? Or a Citizen Promaster for under 150? Or like it has been said the actual SKX for the same money as these new offerings? I just don't see the appeal aside from the person who is trying to make a switch from a Fashion brand to a horologically significant one like Seiko. For the rest of us, there truly is no incentive when a plethora of better divers exist from the 120-300 dollar range.

Those Seiko 5s suck , they literally look like bad mods .That watch looks like something that Mr Hankey from South Park would wear if he were from Miami . The price bump doesn't help either . I really believe that Seiko should fire the designer in charge of that series and hire you instead . Word .
