This one totally flew under my radar. Chained echoes is my favorite jrpg and solid comfort food. the story, the graphics, the mechs, the combat... all of it.
I think Golden Sun 1 and 2 are probably my favourites, and if I recall correctly there was even an airship in there somewhere. This game looks interesting, definitely different from the turn based rpg games I usually play. I definitely wasn’t expecting to see the granny pilot fighting in our team! 😂
I've never been too much into turn based games until I played Monter Hunter Stories 2 which then propelled me into playing other games in the same genre such as Persona, Ruined King and South Park to name a few, so MH Stories 2 definitely holds a special place in my heart, with this game being the next to catch my attention
Nostalgia on the DS was a pretty fun and solid JRPG with turn-based airship combat in it, which also happened to take place in London. It was a definite damn good time.
Some of my favorite Aviation games are Raptor Call of shadows, and U. N Squadron. I was really excited when this game was announced as I am a big Skies of Arcadia fan. I was a little disappointed to learn of the mixed reviews. Thanks for the update.
Final Fantasy 4 with Cecil Harvey (a strong protagonist name right there) on my old IBM pc with a broken sound card back in the day was and still is my favourite turn based RPG. It was my first foray into the genre and now a staple of my gaming experience. Thanks SwitchUp for reminding me of this gem and reigniting the nostalgia I have for it, time to start saving up for the remaster compilation physical of Final Fantasy 1-6 for $114.95AUD. One of my favorite games on the DS was a flight RPG by Atlus called Freedom Wings. I miss it a little. Even though the games are probably not comparable, Sky Oceans looks interesting. It reminds me a bit of the anime series Last Exile.
Bit of an obscure one but Zoids: Legacy is the RPG i return to most. You piloted a Zoid to navigate the map and progress towards massive airships to cross oceans and mountains. Honestly its probably the best turn based RPG I've played and I wish there was a port or remaster of it, can highly recommend to fans of Zoids as you meet all the characters and zoids from the show and can pilot a Blade/Shield Liger and issue commands to The Liger Zero (jager, Schneider and panzer armour mods as well). Love it! In fact I'm off to charge my GBA SP to play it later. Woo! Cheers SwitchUp!
Monster sanctuary is an amazing modern 3v3 turned base game with a free dlc. Its a creature collecter with metroid/Castlevania movement. Extremely fun to build a good team.
Too bad, there was so much focus on team building that the actual game feels so incomplete lol. Even the dlc's ending was somewhat a cliffhanger (well it's free)
Never clicked on a video faster. This one has been on my wishlist from the moment I found out about it, happy to see the team is not giving up on it. Favorite turn based will always be Chrono Trigger, it’s my holy grail!
Honestly I forgot this game even came out. Favorite turn based rpg? That's impossible to answer but I'll say FF6. Sky's of Arcadia is great also... there I used a aviation themed rpg
My favorite turn based RPG actually changed recently (okay, a couple of years ago, but I'm getting on in years and grew up playing the likes of FF2, FF3, and Chrono Trigger) to the masterpiece that is Dragon Quest XI S - the ultimate evolution and synthesis of _traditional_ JRPG elements: fun exploration, charming characters, and engaging combat! A minor caveat to my praise of this game: it is _strongly_ recommended that the player turn on the "Stronger Monsters" optional 'hard mode' at the beginning of the game! Don't be scared, it's not some kind of unfair challenge mode for only the hardcore - it is honestly on par with the default difficulty level of the other entries in the mainline series. I suspect someone made the decision to go overboard with reduxing the default challenge level in an attempt to give the game a broader appeal, but it only served to take away any sense of thrill or challenge which could quickly lead to boredom. DQ XI's defualt difficulty is so ridiculously easy, in fact, that you could probably still win by just doing whatever you wanted 😂. But yeah, the Stronger Monsters setting is an optional setting that can be chosen wheb starting the game file (and can be turned off later at any time!) that makes the game's difficulty level almost perfectly balanced (and by no means unfair or requiring grinding!). It just serves to makes it so you actually have to engage with the game's mechanics, and that is a _good thing_ in an RPG as long as those mechanics are well-crafted and, boy, are they ever!
The Alliance Alive is possibly my favourite of the last decade - really underrated. I loved all the different ways you could traverse the environment and explore the world, including the Ornithopter which is a flying machine that helps you get up mountains. It felt open and had a genuine sense of discovery which is missing in a lot of modern JRPGs. Great on the 3DS or Switch. I’m playing Ys 8 at the moment and enjoying the positive vibes as you find castaways to help you build a community. No airship but plenty of birds.
The Shin Megami Tensei franchise has my favorite turn based game play, I LOVE the press turn system, and I enjoy that the enemy has just as much as an advantage as you when it comes to hitting critical and weakness etc.. it’s so rewarding and strategic.
Another vote for Skies of Arcadia! That game was amazing for its time, I have such fond memories of the crystal/element system and the awesome aerial/naval combat. I'd love to see a sequel or remaster or remake or anything!
Favorite turned based rpg. Ive played so many but i think on the switch it has been Dragonquest 11S. I want to say Xenoblade chronicles (all of them) but they aren’t turn based lol.
Skies of Arcadia is a game I still think about regularly just for the beauty of it. Had a great story, some good twists and while it could be a bit grindy and especially on the Dreamcast the random battles were excessive but still amazing. My core favourite though is Panzer Dragoon Saga! That was an epic! Having your dragon transform and evolve was amazing to my tiny brain and with the panzer dragoon remake and Zwei apparently still on the way I am praying for a saga remake/remaster!
I snagged this not long ago off Amazon. Happy to hear they're working on it and released a huge patch. Probably will play this in the new year, thanks lads!
I’d say it would be whatever your first Pokémon game is… was probably my first RPG and I experienced turn based battles on my friends GBA in Pokémon emerald I was like damn this is like the show! 😂
It's not a turn based RPG but I wish they would give the game Raidiata Story's some love. It had the "Almost all the nps are recrutable." It was a charming game with a good story.
Turn-based RPG's have always been my favorite genre, so asking me which is best is like asking a parent to choose a favorite child. But after reflection, I am going to go with Suikoden. I love the characters, the story, the music, the graphics... it's really a complete package of quality. I've lost track of how many times I've played it all the way through. Even though it won't earn me extra points, Skies of Arcadia legitimately is in my top 10. It's visual presentation, music, the ship to ship battles, it's just a wonderful game.
I think if I'd have to pick a favourite turn-based RPG, I'd probably go with Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I had a great time playing that when I was younger, and the humour and heart really stuck out to me.A lot of RPGs are so self-serious, but Paper Mario wasn't afraid to get a little silly.

I am a huge fan of turn based RPG’s but I think my favorite Switch one is Octopath Traveler 2. Phenomenal voice acting, HD2D, a fun class system, and fun strategy make this my favorite this console generation. I also think that Ruined King was a close runner up along with Sea of Stars and Dragon Quest XI. I still need to try out Chained Echoes.
My favourite JRPG with vehicle combat is Valkyria Chronicles. It's not aerial combat but it does have a pretty neat tank! If we're talking pure aerial combat (does space combat count as aerial?) then Infinite Space on DS.
I don't know how many times I played through Skies of Arcadia Legends when I was young. Borrowed it from a friend and finished it. Bought it then myself and finished it x amounts of times. Such a great game.
When it came to turn based battles, it was always the Mario RPGs that got me invested the most into them. Even the Rabbids crossovers gave me a more streamline experience with tactical turn based battles, which is something I'm usually not a fan of.
Breath of Fire 3 is probably my favourite turn based game for me, cool story, were tigers and dragons what more could you want! The cell shaded graphics still hold up 26 years later too. Need to dig out my ps vita.

On the thumbnail I thought it was Europa for a second. Byt between Europa and this it looks like alot of game devs are fans if Ghibli's Castle in the Sky
SKIES OF ARCADIA!!! There are other rpgs I love that might compete with it but Skies of Arcadia is easily one of the best! And I have been curious about this new game because it is so clearly inspired by SoA. I loved flying around exploring the different lands and towns, and weird little islands. And recruiting dozens of characters to man your airship, and going after bounties! If this new game can capture a smidge of that it’s worth playing.
One of my favorite rpgs is Shining force! Many young ones may not know that game lol. Definitely a special series from my childhood. Much love my brothers. Thanks for the video!

My favorite SRPG/ turn-based RPG would be a MASSIVE tie between Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance/GBA, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift for the Nintendo DS. Both are AMAZING games, and both are two games that I REALLY wish would either eventually be re-released, remastered, or AT LEAST be released for the Switch via NSO. 🙏🤞👌
To be completely honest with you, Skies of Arcadia is one of my absolutely favorite games especially in the JRPG department. This game looks SO good too and I am very interested in it!!!
I'm no expert in Jprg's. From what I've played SMT5 has been the most fun. I played only about 10 hours. My favourite thing so far have been the demons. Some of them are quite awesome. I enjoy their vibe.
I loved aviation based RPGs but the closest to one I've played is Megaman Legends or The Misadventures of Tron Bonne because of the airships they used or fought. I love the concept of Skies of Arcadia but I couldn't play one because I don't have a Dreamcast or a Gamecube.
Lost Odyssey!! Couldn't believe how good the cutscene to in game transitions looked and it came out at a time where I was addicted to turn based but wanted something more adult than Pokemon 🎉
This game looks awesome! One of my fav. RPGs would surely be Final Fantasy Crisis Core, and quite recently I fell in love with the Persona series on the switch, amazing games❤️
It's hard to believe that Sky Oceans wings for Hire have been few weeks on Switch I still remember how excited I was when it was relased in the end of october! Normally i'm a big fan of a turn-based RPG adventure games like Pokémon, Nexomon, Coromon and Casette Beasts, but wan't to try Final Fantasy, Persona, Sea of Stars and this Sky Oceans defienitily this video's Sky Oceans because I love this anime like art style, a lot of diffrent characters, adventuring on the land, but battling in the sky is a nice idea for a game I think that i'm going to give a chance for Sky Oceans: Arrrg Sky pirates ATTACK! 🏞🏝🌌🌫🛩🏴☠️💀🔥❤️💙
I think my favorite JRPG of all time is still Final Fantasy XII. I did love Skies of Arcadia when I played it back on the GameCube. I was very excited when I saw Sky Oceans and hoped it would stand as an indie successor to it. The initial reviews were very disheartening but after this patch I might have to give it a try.
Well as skies of arcadia is really one of my all time faves, and this is obviously heavily influenced by it , then I would like to give this a go! Skies of arcadia and valkyria chronicles 4 , my top 2 games.

Final Fantasy IX is a favourite turn-based RPG. It had the Active Time Bar system, which had a sprinkling of real-time and kept battles fast paced

Yea the Lemurian ship got wings at one point, and the ship theme lives rent free in my head.

SMTV. Between music, systems, and lore aspects, definitely my favorite turn based. Persona is a close second!

Lunar the Silver Star Story is my first JRPG love. And it will always have a spot in my heart.

I love the art style here! I would love to have a go at the game. It does indeed remind me of Skies of Arcadia.
My favorite SRPG/ turn-based RPG would be a MASSIVE tie between Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance/GBA, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift for the Nintendo DS.
Both are AMAZING games, and both are two games that I REALLY wish would either eventually be re-released, remastered, or AT LEAST be released for the Switch via NSO. 🙏🤞👌
To be completely honest with you, Skies of Arcadia is one of my absolutely favorite games especially in the JRPG department. This game looks SO good too and I am very interested in it!!!

FF7 still brings so much nostalgia! I haven't played the remakes though since I don't have a PS4/5. Maybe one day on the Switch.
I loved aviation based RPGs but the closest to one I've played is Megaman Legends or The Misadventures of Tron Bonne because of the airships they used or fought.
I love the concept of Skies of Arcadia but I couldn't play one because I don't have a Dreamcast or a Gamecube.
I can't choose between Paper Mario TTYD and Dragon Quest IX as my favorites. I have played them both so much.
Lost Odyssey!! Couldn't believe how good the cutscene to in game transitions looked and it came out at a time where I was addicted to turn based but wanted something more adult than Pokemon 🎉
This game looks awesome! One of my fav. RPGs would surely be Final Fantasy Crisis Core, and quite recently I fell in love with the Persona series on the switch, amazing games❤️
My favorite jrpg is Trails in the sky the third. It might be a little to story focused for some but I love it.

It's hard to believe that Sky Oceans wings for Hire have been few weeks on Switch I still remember how excited I was when it was relased in the end of october! Normally i'm a big fan of a turn-based RPG adventure games like Pokémon, Nexomon, Coromon and Casette Beasts, but wan't to try Final Fantasy, Persona, Sea of Stars and this Sky Oceans defienitily this video's Sky Oceans because I love this anime like art style, a lot of diffrent characters, adventuring on the land, but battling in the sky is a nice idea for a game I think that i'm going to give a chance for Sky Oceans: Arrrg Sky pirates ATTACK! 🏞🏝🌌🌫🛩🏴☠️💀🔥❤️💙

I think my favorite JRPG of all time is still Final Fantasy XII.
I did love Skies of Arcadia when I played it back on the GameCube. I was very excited when I saw Sky Oceans and hoped it would stand as an indie successor to it. The initial reviews were very disheartening but after this patch I might have to give it a try.
Well as skies of arcadia is really one of my all time faves, and this is obviously heavily influenced by it , then I would like to give this a go! Skies of arcadia and valkyria chronicles 4 , my top 2 games.

Wait, is this an opportunity to talk about the Super Robot Wars series? I started with Original Generations when the English fan translation came out, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. Plus, you kind of pilot planes sometimes, even though it's mostly mechs.
