"thank you ninja" we all say in unison. edit: the silence after revealing the natlan characters 😭 "taking the culture but leaving the people" exactly this.
Concepts and Direct Quotes that ignited a spark in me: "if you want to reach the world with what you do, there's a level of commitment and drive that you have to stick to despite of anxiety, doubt and hesitation." "use your heart but don't rely on it." - Dish "Instead of sitting down or turning around and walking away, I turned around, put myself in a place where I can get the same momentum again, and now i'm running and i'm gonna jump." - Joshua "I had to mess up to get there." - Joshua (SAME! in the most same same ever, same.) "a story to tell, with the ability to tell it, has worth." i love and appreciate your guys' wisdom so much
having brown enemies and white heroes isn't accidental, this isn't about fantasy, this isn't a thoughtless consequence of the game coming from a colorist culture. this is intentional colorism, they meant to do that. character designs and approval take months, nothing slipped by.
To be super honest, as a genshin player i felt the same as Joshua as in their design or lack of representation meant to me and that it didn't change my life at all. It didn't change the fact that i was more excited for the region than the bad aspect the portrayed skin represented for the community. Even when i read comments on twitter about it, my mind was mostly stranged by the upset tones. Listening to you guys i can say that i agree in the aspect of appropiation and, even tho it went through my mind, the message is still showed in a bad light with how they chose enemies with dark skin and playable characters with light tones. I came here to just pass the time but learned a lot of things from you, thanks to both :)
I really. REALLY. loved your discussion about the Natlan character designs. You put so many things into words that I struggled to myself. The way you and Joshua broke down the situation so thoroughly, delving into colorism and racism was so cathartic. This is why I let smart people do the talking, I'll be sending this to everyone who doesn't understand the issue with Natlan, tysm for this podcast. 😭🌸
As a POC, I am grateful for making your voice and many other voices heard regarding this blatant colorism/racism from hoyo. I'm really hoping change will happen and this doesn't just die down and move on as it did with Sumeru. Love you guys!!!
Thank u both for doing this Already helped me getting a better understanding of what department i want to transfer to in college . And hopefully you already know that but i’ll say it anyway, this podcast isn’t slightly about the numbers but of how it’ll help SOME people to be more thoughtful, make better decisions and just fill their time hearing your nice convos and reply to it in their heads Again, thank u both
I’ve enjoyed every second of your two podcast episodes, thanks for making these! I appreciate the honesty, wisdom and the sense of peacefullness that you have in these podcasts, they’re really relaxing. I’m a fan ☺️❤️ Hearing about your struggles in life and praying through them and also sharing the wisdom that you’ve gained is really valuable. Also your comments on Genshin’s Natlan characters were really good! I’ve been really excited for Natlan for quite a while now, but after seeing the teaser with the new characters made me a little hesitant of what’s to come… Hoyo is going into a really weird direction and i hope they’re gonna do some adjustments. Anyway, i’ll gladly continue to follow and listen to your new podcast ☺️ Love you guys! ❤️
Absolutely loved this one! I've recently made an art account on Instagram and at first I was so unmotivated because I wasn't getting any views but once I started really making art that I enjoy I ended up gaining over 5k followers within 3 weeks! Sometimes you just have to push through the dry patch and you will get to your goal once you start making what you enjoy. Awesome to see what advice you guys have as bigger creators ❤ cant wait for next weeks episode
With the new trailer revealing more of the characters it really is pretty disgusting especially the the guy based off the head Yoruba deity being white as snow. There is no amount of mental gymnastics that can make that acceptable. I’ve already been drifting from genshin for other reasons and was hoping natlan would reignite my passion for the game but instead it’s making me want to drop it entirely. I really do hope the pushback they’re receiving is enough for them to make changes but I’m pessimistic about the actual outcome to say the least.
i loved all of this. i also think that the solution would not be to just stop playing the game entirely. though the colorism is 100% an issue, something that i really enjoyed with sumeru was people taking the content of the game that was centered around the culture it's from and then explaining the real-life source. i think that natlan would be a wonderful opportunity to take the material from a game that we love and learn the real culture behind it, while still criticizing the bad things. it would be a great time to uplift POC genshin creators while learning about their culture
Oho? Wednesday now? Even better! The only bit of criticism i got is that mister joshua can speak a little louder when he does speak. That's all And obviously i enjoyed the topics this time around as well, genshin dev team has been known to change very slowly and so i think it might take them just as much time as it took for them to add QoL improvements. And creativity is such an abstract topic...i can never get enough of it, and it's nice to see that you guys didn't stop the topic at just surface level things and that you guys actually dove deeper into your psyche to find out YOUR creative side. I love that. Thankeu guys, looking forward to more good stuff!
I understand the necessity of pursuing your craft and staying consistent with something as means of growing, but isn't art meaningless if it doesn't come from complete sincerity, thoughtfulness and passion? the periods with a complete drought of these things are extremely frightening and usually caused by something else. other times though, i think these times are for taking in new things, processing what you've seen, exploring yourself. ultimately living and finding what it is that you seek to express, until your passion for art itself inevitably returns. but also, maybe not everything needs to be good. mediocrity just is something i personally hate in art
*by good i meant in the sense that it's true after listening to that bit completely, my perspective changed a bit. of course there's real value in wisdom and doing art from things like your own perceptiveness. or just aesthetics, or comfort. but i still can't help but think the only thing an artist should really, really focus on in the long run isn't consistency but those sparks of realness and desire that create the refined things unique to ourselves, the things others feel fascinated by and that feel like the most opposite of a waste of time.
This is definitely true, but i think sometimes like Joshua said, our feelings can play tricks on us. What we on the surface perceive as a lack of passion and drive, might not be a sign to quit the activity entirely like you feel in that moment, but a symptom of something else that might need some mental sorting out. I think what they were tryna say was, passion is important, but sometimes when it goes away, pushing through it to keep up consistency might prove more beneficial in the long run in terms of coming out of that rut, instead of staying and wallowing in it. Of course though, the stuff you said about exploring yourself and taking in new things is definitely important when you start to feel that lack of passion and want to get out of it or understand why it’s happening. But sometimes imo, mediocrity is okay, inevitable even, if you wish to keep moving forward, be consistent, and reach greater heights. Sometimes you gotta hike through plateaus and valleys to get to the peak yknow? In fact, the act of pushing through those passionless ruts and negative feelings for the sake of future gain can also be its own form of passion.
One point i didn't understand was Kaeya, he's clearly a dark skinned man yet you said "that's just a healthy skin with blood circulation" or something and then compared your skin to his? i'm a very pale mexican but i'm completely healthy + you don't really have the same skin tone as him. I'm sorry i think i lost the point during the conversation.
I hear ya! If anything, that comment was mostly an aside to point out that even the darkest skin tone in the game is no where near the darkest skintone in real life. There is really no black representation in GI. - Dish
