Windows since Vista hasn't changed much underhood. So not surprisingly, kill dwm.exe and Windows returns to the Windows Basic theme. And honestly, win32 things are always more stable and agile than UWP apps September 6, 2024 12:11PM
Some things in Windows date back to Windows 3.1 or even MS-DOS. Windows has always been a conglomeration of its predecessors. Now, instead of changing or removing unnecessary features, they prefer to stuff crap into the Start Menu with their ads.
Has always been like that. Maybe the source code branch itself is too bloated that MS decided to paint fresh over with a new layer instead of actually "sanding the rust down"
Well, that’s one way to enable classic theme, you know if you download windhawk and enable eradicate immersive menus then you classic context menus will work
1:11 This is not true. It's a feature called "Hardware Cursor", which allows the GPU to draw the cursor directly to the framebuffer, improving cursor latency and stability. As it's a GPU feature, it requires DWM to function.
Shouldn't this only cause the cursor to vanish then? In my case the mouse became entirely unresponsive. Also, this feature exists on Windows 10, and ending DWM doesn't break the mouse there
@@laglife Yes, cursor works on Windows 10 on DWM failure, because they still supported software rendering (technically, in practice UWP broke). With Windows 11, they essentially always have compositing, even if the GPU is not capable of it. They essentially emulate a GPU in software instead of pure software rendering. That's why when DWM is dead, a lot of things break now. Let's just say that IT guys are not happy with Windows 11's always-on compositing when systems break, because it affects safe mode too.
Did this on Windows 10, pretty much the same result, except that tbe File Explorer can be opened up and running, albeit a buggy bar at the top. I will release the video soon

Why did bro timestamp his own comment 😭🙏

You should try using explorer7, which is basically Windows 7's explorer running on 8.1/10/11, works perfectly with classic theme afaik
I've literally just heard of this, works great on Windows 11.
I'll probably make a video on it at some point (maybe Saturday?)

I believe I also saw it mentioned somewhere that this also improves the way the cursor is drawn when in HDR mode.

You know your experiment is successful when you take Windows to its extreme limits and even get it back to its original roots.

You should've used Windows 8 for this. W8 has none of the UWP junk that's in Win10 and 11, so it's a lot more stable.
Windows 8 and 8.1 have Metro UI which is the predecessor of UWP. That also encounters issues when DWM isn't running.
@@BurnerAccount101-ui4et but not as much. Metro apps usually run in an entirely different window than all desktop windows
