Yun Jin’s dish is actually Chinese Tangyuan :) It’s a glutinous rice ball in soup/syrup with fillings such as black sesame
Ah!! I've been trying to find the name of this for years, I had it at a homestay with a family in Shanghai and have been craving it since but could not remember the name :') thank you
That’s what I am thinking too. It would be totally different from this dish, but still, good effort for replicating the look.
I think the decision to make the lotus cakes on an egg pudding is pretty true to the game, because the ingredients there are lotus, egg and sugar, most of which isn’t used in tangyuan (from what I’ve had) though they are both really amazing dishes!

In Vietnam, there’s a very similar dish to this! They’re also lotus seed cakes (at least in my family, I know the traditional one is more of a dumpling with sweet fillings) but it’s eaten with coconut milk and bean broth. It’s a great taste.

Whoa, a Genshin recipe that's both gluten-free and vegetarian, so I can try making it with no modifications! I have no idea where to buy lotus seeds or condensed milk that doesn't come in a can, but I'm going to do my best so I can make this :D
actually, you might be interested in making your own condensed milk! just use any syrup/ honey and mix it in with your milk of choice, and simmer it in low heat. then you leave it overnight in the fridge after it cools. it's ready by then, enjoyy

Question: would this work for the lotus seed cake?
- Mash 160g of precooked lotus seeds
- Add 5ml of water and mix
- Then add 8g of sugar and a dollop of condensed milk
- Add to a pan (on low heat) 15g of unsalted butter
- Then add the lotus seed paste and cook till the butter is gone
- Roll the paste into little balls and sprinkle powdered sugar on top
(In case you couldn't tell, all I did was remove the cinnamon and the rice flour)
I don't think you can leave out starch of any kind if you want a bit of bite to it. MoriKitchen's process is somewhat similar to making lotus seed paste as a mooncake filling.
The latter doesn't include any flour and its consistency is somewhat akin to Oreo cream or sugarpaste/fondant...? Or something like that. You sure can shape it into balls even without rice flour but the mouthfeel won't really be the same.

it looks soo nice! and with the lotus paste it sure taste amazing but this dish isn't made from egg custard and lotus paste balls it is called tangyuan.
more info bout tangyuan:
- it is a Chinese desert (it is very nice I recommend those who never eaten tangyuan before to try a bowl or tang yuan)
- it is glutinous rice ball filled with peanut / black sesame (mainly black sesame) filling w hot broth/ syrup
- it is also traditionally consumed during yuanxian (lantern festival also known as "full moon" festival)

You can! Yunjins dish seems to actually be based around Tangyuan, I’m assuming her variation just as lotus soup as the broth or lotus paste as the filling. But you can make any sweet or savory variation of Tangyuan without worrying about lotus seed.
