- Mélanie Hélène Bonis, known as Mel Bonis (21 January 1858 - 18 March 1937), was a prolific French late-Romantic composer. She wrote more than 300 pieces, including works for piano solo and four hands, organ pieces, chamber music, mélodies, choral music, a mass, and works for orchestra. She attended the Paris Conservatoire, where her teachers included Cesar Franck, Ernest Guiraud, and Auguste Bazille.
The Cello Sonata, Op. 67, for cello and piano, was first published in 1905.

Welcome to the Mel Bonis International Fan Club!
I'm 77, been a serious classical enthusiast all my life, and never heard of this person before. Sounds amazingly like Debussy! What a delightful discovery!
She wrote a beautiful quatuor the number 1 I think. Very beautiful...
She was a classmate of Debussy at the Paris Conservatory!
CORRECTION: The video's first slide says that this piece was published in 1904, when it was published in 1905. Sorry for the mistake, but thanks for watching!
Very nice music of Mel Bonis, a pitty that she is not more played. Thank you for sharing.
By the way, I have just read the book (in French) on Mel Bonis written by her great-granddaughter, Christine Géliot. Very interesting and moving.
What is the title?

Love the Brahms quote in the first movement. ❤️
Lovely. This is from the audio of another UA-cam video featuring bassist Božo Paradžik & pianist Hansjacob Staemmler. Nevertheless, it's one of the better performances of this work.
Quina gran compositora Mel

This is not a cello, this playing is a contrabass, anyway it's pretty
Yeah, it's a really good performance.
Sorry, what are you talking about? This is exactly cello (violoncello) itself.
Though this is a cello sonata, the performer in the recording I played this on a contrabass.
@@RomeoMaestro This is a bass playing. I’m a cellist, it’s very obvious, though I didn’t notice for a second either.
Correct! I went to the ORIGINAL UA-cam video to find out that it certainly is a contrabass. I wrestled with one of those critters for 38 years, got paid for it, but certainly never got THAT good. (Link provided in description.)
😊
It's hard not to feel that the cello is playing, erm, second fiddle to the dominant piano. Was this written for an amateur friend of the composer, one wonders. Any enlightenment out there?
It's really being played on a contrabass. See link in description.
