- Simple Grinding Rest Part 1 for Bench Grinders to Sharpen End/Slot Mills. Here showing some (explanation on how it works and what i am going to do to Modify it for easier use ) it's a great little Grinding Rest from the book Workshop Practice Series 38 (loose plans) designed by harold hall.
I built this many years ago, it's very simple and cheap to make, only takes around one or two days and very effective for sharpening end and slot mills for Hobby work on any conventional bench grinder.
However there are some niggling design problems that affect the various adjustment and here I show how I am going to modify it to my design for easier use.
Been meaning to modify it for years, but like many things it got put to the back of the list repeatedly !!!!!! just like many job's do!!!!!

Yes, i have gathered he is a great engineer from reading the book i worked to, it saved me a lot of headaches 10 years ago, when i was in the process of starting to make my own design, so on finding the book i took the easier option, and i have used it ever since. thanks for the info i will take a look.

Hi Kev. I know I am a bit late commenting on this video. I have that book by Harold Hall too and it was a great read. I have purchased all the bits to make the grinding rest in the book and just recently got the ball fro the joint. I got 1 inch nylon plastic balls. I hope that works. My offhand grinding skills can use all they help I can get. I am hoping this will be one of my projects to do when I get back in the shop. Which, by the way, I hope to be soon. I think I am done with the remodeling for a while and now that the hospital is well on it way with the transition to the new owners, I hope to have more time for personal stuff. Thanks for sharing.

The biggest problem with this style of sharpener is that any lift of the cutter being ground above the centre line of the wheel changes the angle of contact and the angle of the resulting ground surface - they work better with a cup wheel where the cutting surface is flat . An easier way is to set up the rest so the centre line of the tool holder ( the piece you clamp the cutter in) bore is level with the centre line of the grinder spindle and then use a spacer under the tool holder to raise it up a pre determined amount ( a cad programme makes determining this easy ) to give the correct cutting angles - it may be something like 10 mm for the primary and 25 mm for the secondary , maybe more , maybe less ,

Yes, you have to adhere to the correct dimensions when making this rest with the position of the arm and table holes, and combined with 25 mm square stock for the cutter holder it then always ends up on the centre line automatically, all will become clearer in next video. Its worked for me for the last 10 years.

Kev, I will be looking for part 2. I have a T&C grinder with an endmill attachment, however this looks far more usable for the quick and easy touch up on the Primary and Secondary angles. Your modifications to improve the useability even more sound like a good idea.

Whilst I do not have that book, I do have Harold Hall's book on using the mill which has a different design for a grinding adaptor though you would need a mill to make it and it has dovetails. Good work, looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I have collected most of the books in the series and the ones by Harold Hall seem to be the best written (in my opinion). Mr Hall has these drawings (and others for lots of projects) on his website with detailed instructions and photos.

Hi Kev, I'm following this with keen interest. I wondered what measuring tools you use to set up your grinding jig when changing for the required angles for sharpening different milling cutters or Drill bits ? Maybe you will show us at the end of the series.Thanks for videos Paul

thanks for your interest. I have not used it for drill bits, but i'm sure in the book there is a method, but for end mills and slot mills, If you make all the parts accuratly to the drawing, (part 2 for that) on a 6" (150 dia. wheel ), set it acurately to the bench grinder initially (Part 3 ), thats it, the primary and secondary angle fall in to place automatically each time they are moved from one to the other, if you want the drawings before part 2 (shown next week), i can email them to you.

the plans are not mine, i just did some user friendly modifications to the grinder rest.
The plans are freely available on the internet from Workshop Practice Series 38 (loose plans) simple grinding rest, designed by harold hall. There are a few different ones that are more involved to make but they are all there free to use.
As for my modifications i have no plans but i think my videos will give you all the info, required.

I am wondering if these blocks could be made to hold a common R8 collet. This way you would not need to make 10 different sizes of inserts to fit the 3/4 inch hole. Maybe use 40mm square stock
Just take your 3/8's R8 collet and 3/8's end mill, put in the square holder and lock it true to the table.
The square holder should be long enough for a cap screw in the back to crank the R8 collet back into the hole, locking the end mill tight.
The square holders round hole would not need to be tapered for the R8, just pulling it into the holder will squeeze the collet down on the end mill.

I've skimmed over your comment without putting the detailed thought in to it, due to my time contraints, and i'm sure there are many possibilities to modify it to suit your needs, just like i modified the original concept. However just off top of my head i think if you use a larger block from the 1" square, it will change all the angle relationship with the grinding wheel and grinding rest to the cutter and therefore the cutter angles may be changed.
Just a thought, to play around with.
Let me know what you come up with, as i'm interested, my brain can't multi task anymore🤣🤣and i'm fully immersed in another project at the moment.
