  • El Oso Niño Kids Fat Bike: amzn.to/28PBGEy
    Line 24 Kids Hardtail: amzn.to/1Y3q0dU
How to host this event in your community www.imba.com/kids
This is Sebastian, and mountain biking has already taught him the most important lesson a kid could learn. When you fall, you need to brush yourself off and get back up. Consequently, this has happened quite a few times today.
We’re here in Miami for Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. Any local trail that wants to hold this event can get a starter kit from IMBA, the International Mountain Biking Association. It’s up the local community to do the rest.
As it turns out, it’s quite feasible to get support for an event when it involves kids. Bike Tech, Big Wheel Cycle, and even the Parks Department came through to make this event all sorts of awesome. Diamondback sent me a whole box of stuff, as well as two ridiculous kids bikes.
At 7 years old, I don’t think my brain could have processed either of these. This 24 inch Line hardtail is like a mini version of my bike, and the 20 inch El Oso Niño would make most kids wreck their diaper. I only wish stuff like this existed when I was a kid.
Being relatively small people, my sister and I decided to take these out on the trails for a proper test. I’ll do a more extensive review on both bikes next time, but I’m not gonna lie when I say I really enjoyed myself-maybe a little too much. I don’t care if you have the most violent and demonic kid in the world, they’re gonna have a hard time breaking either of these bikes. This is good because I brought these for everyone to ride.
As expected the Line 24 was a huge hit, since it’s like a perfectly scaled down version of a full sized hardtail. Still it was the fat bike that was the life of the party. Sebastian and his father already do a ton of volunteer work at Virginia Key Park, so he’s no stranger to riding trails. I think the El Oso actually increased his confidence, since the tires provide so much traction and stability. Even when everyone else was eating or waiting for another activity, Sebastian was getting in another turn on the fat bike.
Indeed, a fat tire bike might be the perfect configuration for Oleta River State Park; Its location along the river means that loose sand, puddles, and mud are likely to pop up almost anywhere. For a kid especially, the big tires can be a lot more beneficial than suspension.
I think all of the parents at the event were pretty sold on mountain biking as a great activity for their kids. Although my opinion is heavily biased, I can’t think of an activity that teaches so many life lessons for such a low cost. Compared to the cost of summer camp, or a self defense class, a $500 kids bike seems pretty reasonable. Mountain biking can teach a kid about self improvement, and give them a huge confidence boost. Getting through a patch of roots or a rock garden means choosing your own line, an important lesson in decisiveness and self reliance. Participating in trail maintenance teaches kids about community, and how great things can be built through teamwork.
Let’s also not forget about exercise. We tend to blame society or tablets for kids being inactive, but I think it’s just them emulating their parents. All of the kids here seem very active, and that’s made possible by their parents' involvement. It might take dedication and a little money, you can’t expect a little kid to buy a bike and get themselves to the trails. By starting these kids young, they’ll grow up with a healthy outlet for their energy, and a group of lifelong friends who share the same values.
At the end of the day we had a huge raffle to give away water bottles, shirts, and of course, bikes. Our Diamondback Line 24 found a great home, as well as the bikes that the local shops provided. By contributing to the communities they serve, these shops can expect a healthy mountain biking scene for years to come.
The organizers of the event wanted to give someone the title of “trail ambassador”. This is a kid who represents everything a local trail stands for. We chose Sebastian, for his volunteer work, persistence, and high degree of enthusiasm for mountain biking. As happy as he seemed to have this title, we were pretty sure of what Sebastian really wanted.

I remember my first "real" bike; the one that didn't allow for training wheels. It was a diamondback bmx. At the time, my parents had purchased a house at the beginning of the housing boom. Corn fields were being torn down and houses were being built 50 yards from my front door. The general chaos of residential construction sites are a playground for a kid on a bike

brought my kids to a trail workday recently and they couldn't have been more thrilled to get involved improving and maintaining the trails they ride frequently. as for them emulating their parents, i signed up to help coach youth mountain biking at a club near our house and it only took 2 times before my kids were asking me about what i was doing and if they could try it. now all three of us have 2 summers down riding once or twice a week!

I know this is an old video but I can honestly say it's great. My dad got me cycling as a kid as it was one of the few things to do around my house, a few years ago I converted him from roadie to mountain biker and now he's struggling to keep up with me. Getting someone on a bike at a young age is one of the best ways to get them active (and way more fun than the gym) regardless of the terrain.

Hey Phil, this video is really cool for me because my rescent surge in enthusiasm about mtb is centered around my 2 daughters aged 11 and 12. I've had a mid range to high end trail bike since 2009. I was told it was originally 3500 bucks but being there was an annual clearance event and it was a 2007 GT marathon elite, 1300 out the door she was. I've never riden it the way it's designed for thoug. I bought it on a whim because I was tired of Walmart bikes. But I lack the experience to take advantage of such a nice bike. For a few years I rode with my girls at least once a week if not most days. We gradually went further aa they got stronger. One day though all the tires on all the bikes were flat and this was after weeks of fixing flats constantly. I just couldn't handle it anymore. That was 2 years ago. Well 3 weeks ago I got new tubes for their bikes and jumped on my wife's road bike. She has a blown disk and does not ride anymore.
We went on our first ride in two years and it was killer. We visited our friend who used to be a road racer until he broke his back and got put in a wheelchair for life. He now rides a low boy trike and rides 30 mile loops daily. Then we headed down the road going wherever it took us. It wws late in the day when we started out and we had to cut it short. But when we got home my 11 year old decided to take her mom's bike for a spin. Surprisingly all she had to do was drop the seat all the way and she rode the hell out of it. Power climbing into our ski slope of a driveway. That way mid week. That weekend her and I did a 6 mile ride Friday evening followed by 8 Saturday and 10 Sunday with a mile of rising elevation to the turnaround.
The point is I had to go buy my kids new bikes, they won't stop growing, and I decided they needed mountain bikes. After a week of struggling to find any good deals at the LBS I had to break down and get em a couple Walmart 24t"mongoose hardtails. Remember how I said I have no skills. I didn't own a bike as a kid till I bought my own in high school so I never learned how to do any of the fun stuff. Well 3 weeks of riding with an 11 year old has improved my skill set more than the whole rest of my life. Coming across this video tonight really made me feel good. I would love to try and get an event like this going here in Corona Ca but the city hall is a bunch of assholes and they only care about getting more houses built to increase their big ass pot of money from our already over crowded population.
I really like your channel and other videos that amused me tonight were the ones where you got the mongoose from Walmart and put it through the paces. eventually I have to find the money to get my kids some quality trail bikes. At leat now I know that a hard tail might be good enough and save myself a good amount of money times two. Keep on killin it!

When I was 7 or 8 my neighbor gave me a fully rigid bike that was top of the line back in the 70s, then when i got older I got a diamondback recoil. Personally one of my favorite bikes ever! Now I have a ghost Kato fs 7. All of those bikes can survive a crash just as well as i can!

Hey! He has the same name as my son. My boy is 3 1/2. I bought him a Strider bike to learn on. He loves it! I'm hoping that within the next year or so I can upgrade him. Bikes have been my life since I was young. I wish that my dad helped me along the way with biking. So I'm going to show my son fun and exciting things with bikes.

I knew this sort of contradicts what the point of the video but I am 14 years old and managed to save up 1000 dollars for an Orbea MX10. My parents and I agreed it would be a great solo first investment and I can't lie I love the mountain bike community and have created a passion for riding as well as taking care of my bike.

Idk why I have to address this, but in every single mountain bike vid there’s just that crowd that is wanting a true mountain bike but cost comes their way a lot. when I am more mature and older (I’m 14) I want to start a company that allows extraordinary high end mtbs for an insanely affordable price for EVERYONE. I want to set a better example for young enthusiasts to not leave the affordable bikes and go and spend THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS on dollars to “JUST” get out on the trail and have fun I understand and I have a 2021 specialized fuse 27.5 which isn’t the top of the top bike. I just want people to enjoy the trails they are riding. I am broken hearted when I see these kids with Walmart bikes or so called “big box” bikes and just wish that I could clone my bike and give them that opportunity to just experience the best, and just have the most fun. Wish me luck.🙂

+Seth's Bike Hacks hey I have a question I have a 29er roadmaster quarry ridge n it performs pretty well I have to say I have jump of things as big as the tires n the frame doesn't crack at all but I'm having to ask my self something n I found the answer so a few weeks ago I opened up the forks in the front n there was no oil at all n when I put oil the bike works way better but then there's where the 2 problem came to be that at the bottom of the forks the oil leaked out so I'm trynna see if it would be a good idea to put screws in the bottom forks to hold the oil but I don't want the pressure to build up

What a great event, wish we had this more here in belgium but we dont even have big trails, only like small seperate trails. And my dad was always like do more sport but I didnt like what he did, power training, I always wanted to mountainbike but he never even took me on a mtb trip. This event is a great way for kids to get to know mountainbiking. Im hoping mountainbkiking will get bigger here. Now I might see one other mountainbiker in a month wich is like 4 rides now.
